One Braid, Two Trowels

We hired One Braid Two Trowels (Alx and Brandon) to remodel our half bath and master bath in our…read more1950's home. Having been through remodels before, we sketched up on our computer the layout changes, electrical adds, plumbing changes, etc., and wrote up descriptions of what we wanted done to both bathrooms before we got bids. The contractor we had used in the past had a full schedule already, but we were impressed with the pictures One Braid posted on FB, so we went with them. To specify exactly the new items we wanted, we went to local distributors and, with the help of salespeople, picked out everything from towel bars to the tub and shower enclosure, and all the tile and grout. In our previous remodel we split the purchases with our contractor, where we bought the vanity, mirrors and such, and he bought the shower enclosure, floor coverings and more. We didn't anticipate the communication issues that would arise with the third parties and our contractor on this project, and in retrospect we should have purchased more of the items ourselves. The communication issues, with misconfigured items or incorrect patterns, happened early, and One Braid corrected, but that added weeks of delays to the original 6-week schedule. Regarding tilework, One Braid does very good subflooring and tiling with careful attention to the underlayment, waterproofing, grout color matching, and such. They showed us previews of how different tile and grout combinations looked, which allowed us to confirm we had made good choices. The floor tear-outs went smoothly, and installs went well with a good eye to pattern matching; we were pleased. Tear out of the original tiled walls went well, but rather than hiring a plasterer, One Braid did the drywall and new plastering themselves, which maybe wasn't the best choice. Some seams and lumps were initially visible and later repaired. There were a couple of subcontractor swap outs, first with two different electricians and then with two different plumbers. Not being a plumber, One Braid might have done better bringing that trade into the bidding process earlier because the different tub and shower layout we designed required significant piping changes in the crawlspace below and added another delay due to plumber unavailability. The changes hadn't been included in the original job price and became an adder. Once the plumbing was correctly in place the remaining wall and shower tile went in. One Braid re-inspected the grouting and sealing, and did some touch up to assure a quality, waterproof job. The shower wall and door installation were delayed because one piece arrived broken; delivery of the replacement piece added more weeks of delay. Once the piece arrived One Braid was in later in the week to do the shower installation. One Braid came back again to tweak the squareness of the shower wall and door, and in the end got everything looking acceptable. All in all, if we had a kitchen floor to re-tile, or a bathroom floor, or other tiling job to do, we would certainly consider One Braid. For jobs beyond simply tiling, we'd want to have electrical, plumbing, drywalling, and painting subcontractors be included in a walkthrough in the bidding process for accurate upfront pricing, and then be actual subs on the contracted job.

I hired Alyx in October to build a salon in my home and was told it would take 4-6 weeks. It's now…read moreApril, and while the project isn't technically finished, I've had to move on. The biggest issues were lack of communication and poor attention to detail. I've had to redo several things myself, including repainting, fixing plumbing to meet code, and dealing with unfinished or poorly done work like a non-functional hidden door, missing transition strips, and improperly stained doors and trim thats coming unglued. This project cost too much, took far longer than expected, and wasn't completed well. If even one of those areas had been better, I'd feel differently. As a small business owner, I try to support other women-owned businesses, so this was especially disappointing.

They do not have the other two brands I was after, but did have many other brands of quartz samples inside their small shop. Because I was not able to view the exact items I had in mind, the staff was very helpful in showing me similar courts in the brand Cambria outlet, which my contractor has recommended. There were some samples inside, but Giovy was kind enough to show me around outside as well, so I can view full slabs. They were getting ready for installation. It was great to be able to see full slabs versus the samples that mini shops carry!

We did some research, decided on quartz, and then contacted several companies to get estimates. 101 Countertops was responsive right away and Brenda came out within the week to do some preliminary measurements, see the kitchen space, and answer questions. We were impressed and made arrangements to visit the physical store location where we selected our countertops, sink and tile for the backsplash from the samples available. The faucet we purchased ourselves at Lowe's. They work closely with another business (Balmori's Remodeling) for the actual tile work so we received a separate estimate for that. There were a couple unavoidable delays getting started but it was well worth the wait. They communicated with my spouse (since he works at home) via text, email and phone. The work took a couple days for the countertops and a couple days the following week for the tile. We are so pleased with the result! I included some pictures and would recommend them to someone wanting to do a similar project.
