    Crab roe
    Jessica T.

Came back to Xie Bao recently and thought their crab roe was definitely better this time around. It was umami and perfectly briney. I wish the portion was bigger because it was that good. Definitely recommend the crab roe over rice option than over noodle. We also got the crab roe soup dumplings that were delicious. We also got the clay pot with seafood and tofu. It was piping hot and the sauce was delicious. Service was on a little bit on the slower side, but overall I recommend Xie Bao!

Came here on a Friday night and we were seated right away! We had to order the crab noodles and crab rice and both were so delicious and savory. We also ordered the mapo tofu and cucumber, braised pork, and sweet and sour rib. Everything was fast, hot and delicious. We were pretty full at the end of our meal and everything was actually pretty heavy! Service was excellent and the waitress was always quick check up on us.

We got the lotus root with glutinous rice (app that is sweeter), crab roe steamed buns, crab roe noodles, and crab roe with tofu. Out of all the dishes, we liked the 3 crab roe steamed buns and the lotus root the most! The crab roe noodles were not bad. We probably would not get the crab roe with tofu again.

Visited Xie Bao for dinner with a party of 4. Ordered a number of dishes to try including their viral Crab Roe over Rice. It came with a generous bowl of crab roe that you can pour over a bowl of white rice. I also really enjoyed the Braised Pork Rind with Crab Roe in Clay Pot, which came with a variety of ingredients. Other dishes we tried were their Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs, Braised Pork Meatball with Crab Roe, and Crab Roe & Roast Duck Soup Dumplings.

If there is one thing I could eat without any consequences, it would be anything with carbs. My favorite thing to have here are their buns, soft pillowy little Yangzhou Three-Dices Baos. They are filled with tasty tidbits. There are 3 ingredients for each one but they all come with bamboo shoots; you get your choice for the other two combos. Ex: chicken and pork or mushroom and tofu. Eat them hot or heat them a bit if you're doing take out. I also enjoyed their Steamed Halibut, something that is easy to make at home but it's one of those days where you don't want to cook. The sautéed cauliflower with garlic was only okay to me, I wanted it more charred. Service is attentive. Restaurant is on the upper level where you can see all the action on the strip from above.

The restaurant shares an entry space with the fish spot next door; same kitchen is my guess. Simple, wipeable/throwaway table coverings, and simple decor. While they have the seafood boil, I'd skip it - not enough spice and garlic butter to really enjoy it. It was pretty empty on a Tuesday night, their house Yangzhou bao are far better - crawfish and shrimp was what I thought we ordered but they brought over Peking duck with chicken... 4 medium buns but otherwise was ok. $45 for the crab roe on rice or noodle... that was a bit steep. There are better options!

Visited on a friday night around 6pm with a party of 4 and it was pretty empty. Service was very fast, they gave us 2 menus which was helpful when ordering. We ordered both the crab roe with noodles and rice and both were delicious! Everything was very tasty.

Located above Mango Mango, need to take elevator/stairs to 2nd floor. I've seen their special crab roe over rice/noodle dish on social media and bookmarked their NYC Flushing location, but since I was in the neighborhood in NJ, I decided to try it in NJ instead. 1) Crab roe over rice - 3/5 I was expecting to be wowwed but was quite disappointed. The flavor just didn't hit. I've spoken to other friends and they all think this dish is just mid as well and not worth the price ($37.95) It did come with a small plate of woodear mushrooms which was nice. 2) Pan fried yellow croaker - 5/5 this was really tasty, perfectly fried and they cut it in half for you. The bony spine is there and easy to remove and the tinier bones were almost nonexistent or fried enough to chew and swallow. But it's good to be careful of the bones anyway. $6.95 for one. 3) Crab roe and pork pan fried buns - 3.5/5 you get 3 buns for $13.95 which I think is kinda crazy. It's good but I've had better elsewhere. The bun was soft and crispy on the bottom, and the meat was juicy but to me, it didn't have enough of the juicy factor. I like when I bite into these buns and the juice just drips out, but it wasn't like that. Still good though! But not amazing and I can barely taste the crab roe. They have an extensive menu (see pics). And the waiter was very friendly. The restaurant is spacious with lots of seating.

This place is connected to the Fish House next door. The crab soup was my favorite dish. They also have lots of fish options and crab roe dishes. We got pan fried dumplings with crab roe and a tofu with crab roe dish. I really enjoyed having dinner here. We got 3 fish options and they were all really well seasoned and sauced. I also really like the sweet and sour ribs. They give radish and peanuts as free appetizers and you can ask for refills.

I've seen photos, videos, heard from friends that crab roe over rice was a must try food, so I was eager to visit XieBao and finally get to experience it. With signage outside labeling this as both Fish House & Crab House (sister restaurants connected to each other), I was entering this restaurant with the understanding I was going to have a seafood forward meal, but what I was not expecting was the price point at which this came. Overall, the food was mediocre. We ordered a few dishes and none really stood out to us -- in fact, the item we kept gravitating towards was the free pickled radish that they provided as an appetizer. The crab roe pan fried buns ($14 for three pieces) weren't anything special, though they did have a decent amount of crab meat the flavor wasn't strong and the filling was overall lacking (in volume and taste.) The buns, though claiming to be pan fried, were on the lighter end of color and were not crispy at all. The crab roe over rice itself was pricey, understandably, but my table was extremely disappointed upon seeing the size of it. My friends have tried this at other restaurants in the past and for the same price, have received way more food elsewhere throughout NYC. The crab roe arrived separately from the rice, so it kind of looked disappointing presentation-wise. As we rationed our portions we realized there was not nearly enough rice for us all, and we had to ask for more rice about 3x in the span of a half hour before someone eventually brought us some. Other items we ordered just weren't good, whether it be because the flavors were overpowering with sweetness or if it was doused in oil. I was really looking forward to crab soup dumplings as I've seen in photos of the menu online, but this wasn't on the printed menu when we visited. Tables surrounding us were feasting on seafood boils and seemed to be in good spirits, so that might be the go-to when visiting XieBao. If you're really craving crab roe over rice or really want to try it, it's not bad for a one time meal, but definitely better options elsewhere in Edison.

Let's start with their famous dish, crab roe with rice. Looks good, smells amazing, taste is a little bland and lacking in crab flavor. Would give a 3.5/5 and wouldn't order again because of the price. The pan fried buns were good, not great. Top was soft, bottom was crispy but the filling was also lacking in flavor. The yellow croaker though was the star of the show. It was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and super flavorful. Would come back just for the croaker. Ambiance was a little dingy, there were boxes laying around and didn't look like parts of the store were in use. Service was okay, nothing good nor bad to say.

Had a really nice meal at XieBao with my family. The food was fresh, flavorful, and came out at a good pace, and the service was friendly and attentive throughout. The ribs were fantastic, and the crab roe was especially delicious. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience and we'd be happy to come back again.

The food is definitely delicious and flavorful. Although the pricing is higher than expected, but it's worth a try. Besides the crab meat noodle, I actually really like the soup rice. It was sweet and great seafood taste. The service was good. Waiter was very friendly and gave some suggestions since we're first time guests there. This would be a place I would return back.

3-Star Review - Pink Lotus Cantonese, Metuchen, NJ…read more Stopped by Pink Lotus Cantonese Restaurant in Metuchen around 10 PM when not many other places were open, so the location was definitely convenient--right next to lots of shops. The space is nice with good seating and a clean, comfortable setup. Tried the stir-fried chili tofu, brown rice, and noodles. The noodles were the best part--flavorful and well-cooked. Unfortunately, the tofu was quite average with not much taste, and the brown rice was a bit too dry for our liking. Parking is tough around this place .. paid parking mostly . Overall, a decent late-night option if you're nearby, but the flavors could use a boost.

We opted for the two person deal. 3 apps and 2 mains for $55 - a great deal. For apps we shared the beef gyoza, chicken karaage and takoyaki. The gyoza was ok; the karaage was pretty good and the takoyaki was standard, but good. I had the tonkotsu and my husband had the spicy miso tonkotsu and we both added the ajitama (marinated egg). Both ramens were nice and hot but flavors were underwhelming. The pork itself was good. The noodles were just ok. The tonkotsu had heavy garlic flavor but I was expecting a heartier broth with rich pork flavored like I'm used to. The spicy miso tonkotsu had a kick but also could have been richer. For all the ravings I was expecting better flavors so we're slightly disappointed. Maybe it was an off night. They close at 8:30 so around 8:20 felt slight pressure to finish up (not in a rude way).
