One of the best breweries we've been to! I absolutely loved the outside and inside aesthetic. We're big fans of sours and they had a lot to choose from. Nearly every one was one of our favorites- my persona being the key lime pie one! They also had cocktails, food, and seltzers. Had we not eaten before hand we would have loved to try the food as it looked and smelled amazing. We got two flights and tried a variety of their beers. No complaints about any of them, we just prefer the sours! The gentleman behind the bar was nice and helpful, attentive. Right when you walk in they have their to go beers and merchandise. We both got a hat - myself a beanie and my boyfriend got the navy corduroy hat! Great logo and design! Welcome to the neighborhood XUL! What once was Southern Grist, has recently underwent a rebrand to XUL. The core of the beer is still there, but the vibes and a few of the beers are a bit different. This taproom, near the corner of 51st and Centennial, is a small, but mighty space featuring a cozy and vibey inside and a nice patio. Both spaces are outfitted with a variety of seating from standard to cozy to bar stools and high tops. We have enjoyed drinks here on a few occasions since the rebrand and somehow the PB&J Mixtape always ends up in at least one of our hands! Majority of their beers lean fruit forward, but hey also have a few hoppy beers, and of course a couple of light and dark options. I go between something light and dark, and really enjoyed the Chop It Up, which is a house ale. Definitely will be my go-to here! In addition to all the goods on tap, they have a good variety of merch and canned beers that you can mix and match, or take a set of home. Service is solid, slightly hit and miss depending on the bartender. Some engage a bit more with you, especially if you are asking about the menu, others are a bit quick and want to keep things moving, which I can understand. The space is well laid out, but due its size, the front end can get backed up pretty easily as the ordering station is near the front of the bar, which is only a few feet from the entry door. So, be mindful when coming in. Even with lines, they move pretty quick, so never an issue beyond the initial back up. This location of Southern Grist is in a much more popular and crowded area so parking could be difficult depending on when you get there. Inside is much smaller than the previous location we were at, but they do also have an outdoor seating area also has covered seats to help with the sun. Since we were at the other location before we only were interested in trying the flavors of the different viewers that we could not get. All were yummy. Which was perfectly fine with us because we had to watch our time because we had a wedding to get to. read more

SG has some great hazy beers. Keep up the good brewing. However... As often can happen with customer service, whether good or bad, it can color your experience. The gentleman working that day was unfriendly and clearly doesn't like beer. Not a great front man for the brewery. Serious "wet blanket" vibes and downer. I asked him which of the DDH beers he liked better or some differences between them. His answer went something like this, "I don't like IPA's and all of our beers taste the same". Okee dokee, so glad we drove across town for some crap beer that all tastes the same (Sarcasm. I think the beer is pretty darn good. Customer service - not so much.) Southern Grist is one of my favorite local breweries. They specialize is really unique styles; sours, smoothie-style ales, and IPAs. They have a lot of experimental beers. The inside isn't that spacious with a grouping of six-tops lining the wall. But the bartender was fun and played great music from our generation. You can find this location of Southern Grist Brewing at 5012 Centennial Blvd, Nashville, TN 37209 - this is the end of a shopping center near Tennessee State University and the Nations area. Parking is out front and somewhat limited, you may be able to park around the edges and on the street (not sure). I was pretty excited to visit one of my favorite Nashville breweries on a recent visit (attended the Brew at the Zoo and checked out about a half-dozen local breweries - this and Barrique were the top 2 others came close). This is a rather unassuming taproom - I believe their production facility is elsewhere. Don't be fooled though as there were about 20 beers available for consumption. I've had friends bring me Southern Grist down to Atlanta for a couple of years - I'm in general a big fan of their sours and stouts but find all their releases good and worth pursuing. The interior of this location is spacious with tables on the left a a taproom bar that extends most of the interior distance on the right - there are monitors that show their current draft selection. I was with a group of 6 people so we all got different flights and managed to taste everything as well as pick up bottles for the road. Service is excellent with knowledgeable staff there to answer your questions - quite friendly. Stocking 51 really has everything... coffee, Italian food, Nashville gear, a salon and beer! Southern Grist Brewing was a pit stop during my exploration of Stocking 51. This brewery offers both indoor and outdoor dining and tons of tasty craft beers. I had the southern crisp Pilsner and just enjoyed a quite outdoor patio to myself. This brewery also offers plenty of robust IPAs, and even a beer slushy! I didn't noticed any food options, but I'm sure you can bring food in from the surrounding restaurants. Loved getting a chance to visit this location while in Nashville earlier this summer. We are lucky to be able to buy some of their beers in Wisconsin but there's something to be said about going to the source. The tap room is not larger but there is adequate seating and so many beers available on tap. I love the way their menu is organized with all the sours together, IPAs and so on. Makes ordering so much easier! I chose a variety of styles,2 sours, IPA and a stout. They were all delish, They also had a great selection of canned beers in their to go cooler. Wow, I honestly can't believe that I haven't reviewed SG yet, despite going there for many years now. Southern Grist is our favorite brewery and they are just such a fun brewery all around. They brew a large variety of beers, but none are really staples and you sometimes won't see a favorite again for a while. They specialize in Hazy IPAs, sours, pastry stouts, and they've been making a bunch of lagers recently too. They have several different series of beers, including their fruity sour Hill series, which is a favorite of ours. They started out in East Nash, but added the Nations taproom several years ago in an expansion. It has lots of seating inside and outside and there's plentiful parking (park around back for ease of parking). The staff are all super kind and the place is very welcoming to everyone (especially families and pups). We've been to festivals here and they've done a fantastic job organizing them. They were also great all throughout Covid and we always felt safe here. Southern Grist is an amazing company and one of the places that makes Nashville a special place! read more

Tonight was my first time to SGB Nations and I sure hope I have many more to come! They have a few differences between the Nations taproom and the East Nashville taproom do check Untappd for their selections. SGB is one of my favorite breweries in the country,especially in the southeast. They do a killer job on NEIPA, stouts (esp adjunct stouts), and sours (esp the heavily fruited sours). Everything they had available on draft was either available in cans or crowlers (I picked up two four packs tonight which I'm sure will be delicious). They have several large screens and a large projector screen for showing games. The outdoor area is kind of small but looked like it will be great on a warmer day. The two bartenders were awesome! They talked about the beers with enthusiasm and had great suggestions. I will be back! read more

Really enjoyed this place. Beers were actually fairly priced and were delicious. I really enjoyed their pilsners. Inside is super nice, but don't pass up sitting outside. We love the Southern Grist location in the Nations. This has become one of my BF's favorite breweries. The is a great mix of beer and they always have new beer on tap. The other day when we were there, he said that if he had friends come to town for a brewery tour, Southern Grist would be the first stop on the tour. The taproom is pretty spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. There is not a kitchen onsite but I do think they have a food truck that serves barbecue. There are about 20 different beers on tap and they also serve cider for the non-beer drinkers. The other night I tried the "Compliments and Kind Words" which is a Milk Stout brewed with Peanut Butter and Oreos. Seriously. Delicious. It was dessert in a glass. I think it would be amazing served over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The BF loves IPAs and he loved the Insert Juicy Pun. He said it was just a great, no frills IPA. The bartender gave me a sample of Boil the Ocean, which is a sour ale. I am not a fan of sours but gave it a try. It was really good. It tasted like a mimosa. It was not super sour. It was really the sourness of a glass of orange juice--maybe even sweeter than that. Very light. Very drinkable. Looking forward to our next visit to the taproom to see what other delicious beers will be on tap. read more

They've got some good beers here, across all varieties. We especially liked their Broconut IPA and both of the dark beers they had on tap. They do flights and half pours and of course smaller pours of their higher ABV beers. Strong and free WIFI, just like 'merica, and they sell singles to go out of their refrigerator! Love that. They were selling a lot of to go beer the day we were there. Decent amount of seating inside (probably seats at least 100) and a small outside space as well. Parking is plentiful with a free, large lot out front, plus street parking across the street as well. Not sure on the food options here at this location, but I don't think they have a kitchen. I really, really liked their digital menu board over the chalk menu board at their location in East Nashville; simply much easier to decipher and read. Tons of merch choices here too if that's your thing. Try this location out, I bet you'll be satisifed. read more

Really disappointed to arrive and find out that they weren't open for normal business. At this time they are only providing orders to go. I was anxious to try them out because of all the unique beers they have and a ton of crazy sour flavors (my wife tends to like sours and ciders). They staff was really nice and apologetic and were eager to help us make some selections from the cans they had on hand. We grabbed a couple (still need to try) and look forward to when things are a little more normal and we can come here for a regular visit. There aren't many things that take me to Nashville. I mostly visit when there's a concert tour rolling through. Come to think of it... that's the only reason I visit Nashville. Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of Nashville. Well... I've found a reason to make a trip down there even when there's not a concert. Southern Grist is a must-visit when visiting Nashville. On my most recent visit, I expected to visit a few breweries. I added Southern Grist to the list not expecting to love it so much. Before trying anything, just looking over the menu board made me love this place! Dare I say that it's my favorite brewery in a 500-mile radius of Louisville. You can get tasters of every beer you want. They range in price from two to three bucks. I ended up having 6 tasters but I was also able to try sips of what my partner ordered. We each had just about everything they were offering at that time. I'm in love. New England IPAs... check! Sours... check! Fruited IPAs... check! I wish I would've picked up a four pack of that Strawberry Upside Down Cake IPA. It was delicious. Since my visit, I've been following them on all the socials. They're constantly releasing something that sounds delicious and when the summer hits... I might make monthly trips down just for them. The variety of NE IPAs/IPAs/Sours/Fruited IPAs is perfect here! They have two locations. This is called the Nations taproom. Without visiting the other location(which I think is closer to downtown), I think I prefer this location. Our bartender was friendly and ready to give us beer. It was around lunch time so there weren't many people there. There were a few people that came in over the lunch hour. They do have a parking lot but you're more than likely going to park on the road shoulder nearby. Their parking lot is shared with other businesses in the area. It was full that day so I'm sure it's like that all the time. There's also a delicious taco shop around the corner(Oscar's-review forthcoming). SOUR HEAVEN!! Heaven, I say!! When the Fella started researching breweries in Nashville for us to visit during our trip, he was very excited to tell me about Southern Grist. I LOVE sour beers. And boy oh boy, do they do sour beers right! We went in just after opening time. There is a parking lot, but it is shared with several other businesses in the immediate area. We had to resort to street parking, but that wasn't a problem for us at all. We were the only customers in at the time, and for most of our visit (11am on a Tuesday is probably not a high volume time). Sometimes that can be an awkward situation, but the server Katy was exactly the right level of talkative and letting-us-enjoy-ourselves-ness. She helped set the wonderful tone for the rest of our visit! Katy is A+!! We initially intended to each get a flight of 4 and then move on the stop we had planned. But...that was not to be so. Which was JUST FINE by me! We each ended up getting a couple extra sample sized ones to try...and we very easily could have stayed here all day just drinking the delicious brews! This is my new favorite brewery, for sure! So good, I would make a trip to Nashville *just* for Southern Grist! My initial flight consisted of four pink beers. Not on purpose, but I'm not mad at it. Pineapple Raspberry Hill. Caprison.Teal Skies. Best Birthday Ever. After those I also tried the Batida w/ Raspberries and....something else. The Fella let me try some of his ones too. They were all just...delicious. It really came down to which ones were my absolute favorites. Because, since they aren't distributed near me (as far as I can tell), I was not going to leave without some to bring home! They have some of their offerings available in 4-packs. Those that aren't can be bought in crowlers. And I think most can be bought in growler size. I couldn't decide on just one, so I got two crowlers to bring home, of the Batida and one other one that I can't recall at the moment. Had I more ample a bank account...I would have bought a crowler of every single thing! Really, though, the space is cool and bright and clean. The beer is freakin' delicious! And if Katy is representative of the rest of the employees, the staff is wonderful. I live in another state...but I can basically guarantee that I WILL be back. read more

Just moved here and we're on a mission to check out all the brew pubs in the area. SGB has a nice open area with comfy couch, tables, long bar and outside seating. Music at the right level to enjoy but still hear conversation. Our bartender was informative and pleasant. Nice pours. They had a food truck with some interesting noshes but we had just eaten. Next time we'll know better. We love fruity sours and they didn't disappoint. My girl had 5 oz taster's of 7 beers. The Imperial, Cherry Cobbler, Purple Skies and Passion Fruit Black Currant Hill stood out but all were very good. I'm a N/A drinker and was happy to have two choices. Beacon IPA was fruity and the Company Pils was Light and crisp. Overall great experience and I could see this becoming a favorite. read more

NOTE: Not open yet due to COVID, so some of this review (from my last visit before closing) does not apply today. I will aim at removing this once they reopen the taproom. 5 stars with a caveat (will get to that). I love most of their beer. The collabs are out of this world. The staff is awesome. And the place is very modern, perhaps a bit of an industrial feel, with a nice bar. They have a small food menu, but they allow food from outside and are down the strip from a brick over pizza joint and across from the 51st street deli which is wonderful (both the sandwiches and tacos, although I hear the burgers are great too). The beer? Sours are the center of their wheelhouse and they do tons of them. It is clear they are very skilled in adding adjuncts and the come up with some unique variations (the Hill series in one of their staples). They also have a mixed greens IPA series where they rotate hops on what I assume is the same malt and yeast base and do some others. I have not been unhappy. There are some darks, but I see more as their special runs. My favorite of all times was their first collab with Garagiste Meadery in Tampa called Reboogs Return (the second was also good, but the Mexican Chocolate they released the same day was better). The caveat? I am a bit worn out on the heavier lactose sours. They are a style lots of people love, and one of SG's niches, but I am just burned out for now. If that is your style, it is one thing they do very well and I would still rank SG one of our top 5 micros in the metro area. The demand from friends across the country wanting to trade has matched Bearded Iris now. read more

It was my first time here today and I thought it was a pretty nice hang out. You just walk to the counter and tell them your order. They had a lot of different options and I actually prefer light beers, so I tried the Southern Grist and the #15. I liked them both, but I liked the #15 more. I liked that it had an option for outdoor seating. I was there early in the day around 2pm, and it was pretty packed. I think the prices here are pretty decent, too. read more

While in Nashville, this is THE brewery to visit! I had so much fun here! The selection of beers was good, and all the ones I tried were delicious. I'm an IPA kind of guy and was not disappointed. I had a brief chat with Jaime, the owner, and turns out he's an awesome good dude overall. Another best part about this place is the open seating. The staff was very attentive and even gave a rundown on why some beers are named what they are. It was a 10/10 experience. Can't wait to come here again! read more

Having tried every single brewery in Nashville, Southern Grist is the best in Nashville hands down. After trying around 15 of their beers, I have yet to try a beer than I would put below a 7/10. Most are around the 9/10 or 10/10 range. My two favorites are definitely the Strawberry Upside Down Cake Double IPA and the Mixed Greens IPA that they have had recently. The Painkiller Stout and their lactose brown ale (I forgot the name of it) are also incredible. It's also awesome that Subculture has been setting up shop right next to them to provide awesome food to an awesome tap room. I wish Southern Grist & Subculture did a permanent partnership. Both are 10/10, in my opinion, and compliment each other incredibly well. Definitely stop by if you're a beer enthusiast. Could not recommend this place enough UPDATE: Have tried over 80 of their beers now. Still the best in town by a long shot read more

I absolutely adore Southern Grist. I really wish we were able to get their beers in Wisconsin (maybe someday)! In the meantime, I would go back to Nashville with hitting up the brewery as one of my main reasons for returning. We visited both brewery locations in the same weekend. Southern Grist is now one of my favorite breweries. The service is excellent - friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. The prices are good, and the build-your-own flight is a great option for new visitors. Bonus - a little discount on beer to go with the flight card. We definitely took advantage of this and brought some cans back in our luggage. The sour and fruited beers really stand out, but everything we tried was delicious. Southern Grist is a must-visit in Nashville. One of my favorite parts of our trip was drinking delicious beers and playing cribbage (yes, they have games too!) at the East Nashville Taproom on a winter afternoon. The Nations location was great as well, although a little more of an industrial feel, and I don't recall if they had any games available. The Nations location is close enough to Fat Bottom Brewery to do both in one evening, and not a bad walk. read more

We really enjoyed checking out this second location of Southern Grist. After experiencing the original location a few times this one felt completely different. It wasn't different in a bad way, but each location just has its own vibe. I would choose to visit the one that matches my mood. This location felt very contemporary, upbeat and fast paced where the original felt more low key, casual and intimate. The flights are always fantastic at Southern Grist, and I love the variety of flavors they incorporate into their beer. Many places try to incorporate fruits, herbs and flavors just for the novelty, but it feels like Southern Grist takes the time to ensure the flavors mesh perfectly. The Blueberry Cobbler sour is to die for! I think you'll like it even if you dislike sours. read more
