I was told that the pup I chose was 1/2 Pit Bull & 1/2 Siberian Husky. They said that the man who dropped off the litter had a female dog who got pregnant while he was at work & so he was dropping off the litter to be adopted. We are doubtful of any Pit Bull in our pup & there is certainly no Siberian Husky. We're pretty sure she's at least part Mastiff. That's a significantly different dog. I get that they were going on what they were told, but based on what our pup & her siblings looked like, I'd think that folks who specialize in dog care (especially the vet who fixed them) would have acknowledged the discrepancies in the breed. We didn't realize until we got her home, took her to our vet, & did some research that we had a dog that will likely be 20-40 pounds larger than we expected. We love her & we're so glad to have her, but I think this place is churning out the animals at such a rate that does an injustice to the dogs & their future owners. Also, while going through the registration process, I witnessed them have to clear up an error with labeling & tracking a kitten in their care. They'd sent one to the vet to be fixed but the vet discovered it had the same name of a kitten that had already been there. For a short while, they didn't know which one was at the vet. Errors happen but they seemed especially boggled by this. I will note, too, that I was impressed when I received a call from them a couple of weeks after our adoption because one of our pup's littermates had contracted Parvo. They wanted to ensure our girl was healthy & to warn us to be on the lookout for symptoms. read more

I went into the Yakima Humane Society with a kitten that was either lost or abandoned. I was told they don't take cats, that I would have to seek other options. Felt (mostly) unappreciated, unwelcomed, and endured several hurtful micro-aggressions from one of the white staff members (I'm black), that in the end drove me away fairly quickly. My parents got 2 dogs from here. We're told they were a brought in together and were good with each other. The larger dog immediately attacked the smaller and the dog my parents already had. It was taken back later that day no $ returned. Both dogs were unwashed when they first went to see them and were unwashed when they were picked up after being spayed. The smaller dog is currently at the vet fighting to stay alive because of the bad job of the surgery and probably won't make it. They've only had it 2 days. read more

Everyone was mostly friendly to us but our adoption experience turned sour after multiple errors on their part. In December, we were looking to adopt a senior dog. In January, my daughter discovered a new addition to their website (let's call her "D") and we put in an application. We were accepted and contacted on a Saturday to put money down. We were traveling at the time, and are from out of the area, so we asked to pick up D the next Saturday. They would only hold her for 48 hours. I agreed to come in toward end-of-business on Monday. Monday came and we received a call that D had not yet been spayed and that her appointment was scheduled for Wednesday. Okay, mistakes happen (aside from the hurry to adopt a dog that was unadoptable). We still drove to meet D and fell in love with this precious doggo. We paid for the adoption and agreed to return Wednesday post-op to take her home. On Wednesday, we returned to pick up D. When we arrived she showed no signs of surgery (no pain, lethargy, or cone of shame). After some confusion in the office, we headed to our car to take D home. One of the workers came running to my car and told me to come back inside. I went inside and left my daughter and D in the car. They discovered that they missed D when rounding up dogs to go to the spay clinic in the morning. They said we had to bring her back in and come back Thursday to get her. I politely declined and said I would take care of spaying her at my vet. After 20 minutes of back and forth, the manager reluctantly agreed to allow us to go after I signed a document. She was very nice and gave me until April to provide the proof. When we returned home we received a phone call that D had not been chipped either (even though the website listed that she had been). At our vet, we had D chipped and they ran tests to discover that she had been spayed already. In early February, we mailed the proof of chipping and spaying. We thought we were finished with this adoption. Then, our original April deadline date came for providing the proof of spaying. We received a phone call and were informed that we had missed our deadline. D was scheduled to be spayed and chipped in the morning. I explained that the proof had already been sent; however, they had nothing on file. I was asked to provide the documentation again via email, which I did. Hopefully, this is the end of my story. read more

Do not adopt pets from the Yakima Humane Society. If it turns out that the dog you adopt from them is a dangerous animal, they will not take it back, and, instead, advise you to place it up for adoption on a re-homing site LYING about it to get someone else to adopt it, or pay someone else to euthanasia it, causing even more trauma. read more

Mixed feelings I adopted two pups long time ago. I think they were taking from momma to early (she had them there). 1 dog clearly had mental issues I had to send her to a rescue she needed more help than I could give let alone afford. My other one has always been a bit off. I love my dogs completely but it's cheaper to get a dog else where and go to spay and neuter clinic. Check out Craigslist. Also when the animal control is out they physically hurt the animals! I will never be adopting from here again. I got a sweet gorgeous girl who was a unwanted puppy. She's healthy and is developing normally. read more

I have had two experiences with the shelter. The first one was when I found a kitten. I took him to the shelter. They took kitten away from me and told me he had virus in his eyes and would need to be immediately put down. They refused to give him back. Then I found dog on their web site. I rushed to adopt him. I had already spoke to them on phone. After holding him I went to adopt. I was told I needed a note from landlord before I could adopt, I could not even put a hold on him. I also found out it would cost me $210.00 for one little dog, who needs a home. There is something not right about all this. read more

We have had wonderful experiences here. We have adopted two huskies from the shelter and the staff has always been super friendly and helpful and made the greeting and taking home processes meaningful and edifying. Though we live in the Olympia area we make the trek across the mountains and come back here to do our adoptions and has become the place where we add fur babies to our Husky pack. Highly recommend them and if you don't adopt it's always good to donate as there are a lot of critters in need and the staff puts their hearts and souls into helping all that they can. read more

I tried to adopt a dog named Heidi; but she was unavailable. A few days later, she was available again. I tried again and she was unavailable. extremely extremely extremely disappointed, we had a puppy on hold and got an email saying we had been accepted specifically for her and we told them we'd give them the adoption fee and everything and they then sent out another email saying she has been adopted out. we had a hold on her and everything, we were so so so excited to meet her and they ripped that away from us because someone gave them money right there we were going to drive down tomorrow to get her. im so devastated, they did us very wrong. read more

Went Saturday because no one answered the phone after multiple times wanted to adopt a special needs kitten that was on website. Stood in line for more than 5 mins, the counter girl starts to wait on another person who was after me. Told them I was next, girl was snippy . Told her which cat who being held off-site, she called them told me to come in Mom between 12-6. My family all excited especially my daughter. Daughter go in on Monday right at noon, only to be told the kitten already had a good on him for a meet and greet and to try back in couple of months. To say the least not happy, they could have taken are name down in case he was adopted. No I was just basically dismissed. read more

My cage broke in their parking lot. My cat escaped and ran into some trees. I asked a bystander to go back in and ask for help, even a net. He told me someone said they'd be out to help. We waited an hour. I called over 10 times with no answer. 10 people were there and it was a slow day. Eventually I went back in over an hour later and they told me a woman went to check. We were out there the entire time and saw no one. They humiliated me and implied I was lying. 3 people can attest to the fact no one came to help. The cat eventually ran away. Over an hour they had to help me and no one helped. This facility is a joke. Do not count on them to be there for you if you and your animals are in need. They will ignore you and lie to you. I will never make donations or adopt from them again. I'm devastated. There is ZERO excuse for LYING, gaslighting and refusing to help when there are many people working. When I finally went back, they instantly were able to magically help when I complained. Their idea of "helping" at that point was to hand me a net. By then it was too late. The entire 10 people I saw were just hanging out in the main lobby. Most of them standing around not doing anything. read more

My sister and I adopted two chihuahua/dachshund puppies from here in September. We drove all the way from Seattle to the Yakima location because we wanted a puppy we could train from a young age and all of the puppies in the shelters in the Seattle area are highly priced and go pretty fast. We knew we'd probably have a better chance looking further out. Once my sister saw the male puppy on their website she knew she wanted him! She called and the woman fostering him (then known as Chango) informed us she also was fostering his sister (then known as Lucy). It was fate. We drove off less than a week and a half later and are so grateful every day to have them in our lives. This team did a great job and made the experience headache free. Thank you foster mom- I can't remember the name but I think your last name might have been Balthazar? For keeping our babies safe until we could do it ourselves. read more

I adopted a 13 year old black cat named Sheba. I have 2 cats that are 12 and 13 and they all got along within the first day! I would recommend older cats for older people. I just love her and within a week she was on my chest for loving and purring. My only complaint was her very matted hair. Wish she had been combed more often. read more
