I would encourage anyone that is considering donating to, or adopting from BFHS to read the employee reviews at Indeed.com to get some insight into the way animals and employees are treated. I wouldn't discourage anyone from adopting here, as it's what is best for the animals. Just know a bit about what type of organization and management you are dealing with. When we recently adopted there was one front desk employee that was continually very snarky. We could not get any real idea of when we could pick up the dog we agreed to adopt. We had to wait for her to be spayed, and the employee seemed to delight in telling us they couldn't give us much of a timeline. I visited our new dog every day the shelter was open while we were waiting for her to be spayed. Almost every day this same snarky employee made it clear they didn't have the staff for someone to let the dog out of her kennel for me. I had made it clear on every visit that I only wanted to say hi and visit through the kennel door. On the one day that employee wasn't there I was immediately offered a meet and greet room to spend some time with our new dog. Quite a difference. There is absolutely no follow up after you adopt. Read the descriptions on Pet Finder and you will immediately notice the over-use of the same cut and pasted phrases. It's difficult to feel like you're getting an honest assesment of each dog. 2 star rating from charity navigator. I absolutely wouldn't support this place financially. The reviews on indeed.com point to fear based management being used to bully employees who actually care about the animals. read more

It's an illegal place, my friends dogs ran off and they caught them in this place. They went to retrieve their dogs back but "oh sorry, to get your dogs back it's gonna be $300. And if you can't pay that today it'll raise by $100 each day". My friend moved into a new house so they were struggling with money. They had friends and family put money in to get them back. It was already $500 for each dog. Not even a week in, we went back to get them but they SOLD THEM. They said they were taking up space and needed to free up room and someone adopted them. WHICH IS ILLEGAL. I've been very upset about this for months, they took down this review but I'm putting it up everytime... Don't go here y'all, they only care about money, not animals read more

Wanted to post this long time ago, but it didn't go through on yelp. My husband and I went on Petfinder.com in June 2021, and found a dog that seemed to be a good fit. Benton-Frankin Humane Society was the place that we were going to adopt the dog. There was some information on the website said that the dog is doing well with other dogs. We trusted the information in the dog's description on petfinder.com, and we also were told by the staff on the phone before going there that is very friendly and not aggressive at all towards dogs and people. The first thing that we were concerned about was the dog we wanted to adopt cannot be aggressive, considering we have a dog in our apartment and we live in the city which is surrounded by dogs, cats, kids, and people. We spent time about half an hour on the phone with the Humane society staff member to make sure everything was perfect before we drove there, because it took us about 4 hours to get there. ( 8 hours, both ways) Before meeting the dog, we again made sure that the dog is not aggressive. We also were shown the surrender forms from the previous owner. Contrary to what we were told over the phone the previous owner wrote in the surrender form that this dog is "Incompatible with all animals". When we inquired about this we were told not to worry, and were once again assured that he is not aggressive. We were told that the previous owner surrendered him because they had been laid off from work and the dog was too loud for the apartment they were living in. Once again we trusted the Benton-Franklin Humane Society staff. When the dog was brought out he seemed aggressive and was barking/screaming very loudly. After seeing this my husband and I were both a bit worried. We were assured by one of the Benton Franklin Humane Society staff members that he was only excited and just had a loud bark. The staff member holding him said he was excited and they recommended having me who was holding our own dog, let my dog walk wherever she wants and not to lead her. I followed the instructions of the staff member and once again trusted the Benton-Franklin Humane Society staff. For context our dog is calm and friendly towards children, adults, cats and dogs of all sizes and genders. If there is any doubt of this we are happy to provide her interactions with various dogs, cats, and people. The first thing that the dog did to my dog when she was close to him was growl, lunge out, and bite her. I immediately checked to see if my dog was hurt while the staff downplayed the incident stating that the dog was just being a little bit rude. When we got back inside my husband showed one of the staffs how severe the wound was and talked about my concerns of infection. He was told that dog's tongues are actually clean and it would likely heal on its own. This did not make sense to us at all and my husband asked if there was anything that could be done to prevent the wound from becoming infected. The staff applied a disinfectant to her tongue but this still did not solve the issue of keeping the wound from getting infected and did not solve the issue of closing the wound. Knowing this, My husband requested information/directions to the nearest vet. She had to get surgery and it took her over almost 2 months to recover completely. I wish the staff members at Benton Franklin Humane Society were more professional, so one one would experience this. We would like to say thank you to the director, Autumn for coming to a resolution on covering our dogs vet bills and are happy to see Nino has found a home. We would however like to caution anyone looking to adopt a pet here to be diligent in their research and request that the dog they are visiting wear a muzzle if there is any chance of aggression. read more

I found a stray cat ( I named him John daly because I found him by the golf course) and I couldn't keep it, I took it here and they made it quick and simple and I was able to check and they found him a home. Couldn't ask for more read more

I just adopted a new baby kitty (so cute!!). I am impressed with the Benton Franklin Humane Society. First of all, I am happy to see they got a new and very nice location! http://www.bfhs.com/ Very clean, well staffed, animals seem very well taken care of. Adoption is the only way to go, and you would do great to visit these guys if you are thinking about adding another member to your family! I paid only $80 for this adorable little girl kitty and that covered some vaccinations, a micro chip and it would have also covered her getting fixed had she been old enough (only 8 weeks now). Plus you get a free vet check up at the vet of your choice within 2 weeks of adopting. Again, that's all for $80 bucks, new animal friend included! They were so kind, and did a thorough job of making sure my kitty was going to a great home. There is much happiness at home now. :) Thank you Benton Franklin Humane Society! ooooooooooooooooooohhh My big problem is the smell. I went in to volunteer and I couldnt get over the smell. Ok well, I got over the smell, then no one could train volunteers. They had several jobs open and I applied from time to time and never got one. I can train volunteers and I will scrub shit.. and no smell if I am a staffer! Animals and people do not deserve that. They do an interesting and fun fundraiser in February... a large community crab feed. great idea. read more

You used to be able to be able to go into the cat room and play with them. This was good for the cats, because it socialized them. Now you're allowed to only view them, and if you want to play with them at all, you have to fill out a form. It used to be my favorite past time but now it isn't. I adopted a kitten from the Benton Franklin Humane Society before this rule was set in place. I picked her because I was able to actually play with her. You can't tell what a cat is like from behind glass. read more

"We do not hold adoptable animals for any reason. If you are approved to adopt an animal, you must take the animal home as soon as it is available for adoption." ~ BFHS website excerpt. Yet the director is holding a cat, and has been for more than two weeks, for an employee that took such poor care of her medical condition that she ended up in a coma and has been in a convalescent home for two weeks for recovery because she was so bad. She is expected to be released next week but that is not set in stone. This person doesn't even know if they want it for sure. We have been begging and pleading for his release but the director won't see past her friendship to see that this is not a good match. She has become snarky and offensive about the situation and will not release the cat. We were nearly done with the adoption, waiting to reach the vet to get confirmation of one shot, when she came out and told everyone no, that and employee/volunteer in a coma had "dibs" on him and we couldn't have him. We had been there for an hour, filled out paperwork, were running back and forth down halls to fill out that paperwork and then return to the cat as quickly as possible before she suddenly had someone else that she was holding him for. We came at 12:20pm and it was closed there was like 5 or 6 cars up there and its said its open but it wasn't ....i also called and no one answered.....i will never go there again worse please ever....Hey guys if u want somebody to adopt an aminal u should work on your costumer service!!!!!!! read more

Where do I start. We are prior pet owners, and our German Shepard passed after 12 years, and we decided we were ready (after almost two years) to adopt. This was our first experience with adopting a rescue dog. We met the dog at the Petsmart in Kennewick. Talked with the lady there, but had to discuss with my wife. She stated that the best way to proceed would be to go through the website, which I did. I filled out application, and contacted Humane Society office where we spoke, she took my credit card info and put a 24 hr hold on the dog. Went to pet store following morning and got all the supplies. My kids and I had just gotten into the car to go pick her up when they called me to say that there was a mixup...the dog had already been adopted to somebody else. Oh, and the $15 hold fee? "We won't refund that", even though it was their mistake. (Said they would give us credit toward another hold fee...which will never happen at this facility). On top of all that, she was generally rude and unsympathetic on the phone. Kids are crying...pretty much the worst experience ever. read more

Maybe it was a good day! Saturday 11 am sharp - I was 10 minutes early to be there as soon as the doors opened. It's been over 10 years since I've visited a shelter because of prior experiences with the living conditions for pets and loss of my previous companion of 12+ years. This facility was was the cleanest I've ever been in, well lit, with lots of windows, and knowledgeabe staff. A gentleman was scubbing all the floors and windows of shelter room when I passed. I was provided with behavioral reports and immunization records after meet and greet. And everything I read in report matched personality of dog. The 8 hour drive was worth it. This is the most loving, sweet, cuddly dog I've ever had. Were all a much happier family since we've found eachother! read more

Used to go and volunteer here and loved it ... This year would of been my 4th year to volunteer.. Also my little girl has raised $ selling cookies for the animals... Unfortunately the women who is in charge isn't the nicest .. I came by to give donations a car full of donations and was yelled at like a child because I left my 2 small short haired dogs in the car for 7 mins .. It was 78 degrees outside and my dogs were fine I was simply dropping things off.. When I went to complain to the women in charge she was unprofessional about it over the phone and just keep repeating it is there policy ... She needs to listen to those do donate and volunteer I was only there as a errand to drop things off I would never put my animals in harm .. I understand some people are stupid and might do that but I was only there for 7 mins... I'm so disappointed how they handled it and my little girl doesn't want to go back because the lady yelled at me.. I can't believe some people .. We need to listen to each other not attack.. It's about the animals ... And you've just lost yourself volunteers because of your unprofessioanl attitude towards the people who come and help ! No one wants to be treated that way read more

I'm not too sure what you mean by the smell? Honestly, I think it's one of the best smelling Animal Shelters I have been to in awhile. They also have amazing staff, all very excited to help everyone. All-in-all I think the Humane Society is the best place to adopt an animal from. read more

we got all the way to the paperwork before we were informed we couldn't take the cat we wanted home because there was a dog already at home who hadn't been fixed. really. saving a cat was less important to them than them trying to control our dog. we were then quite snottily referred to the "kill shelter" in Pasco (Tri City Shelter) where we were treated kindly and adopted a wonderful cat....and of course we saved the cat's life by doing so. (i mean no disservice to the shelter by saying that). if you want to save the life of an animal needing a home, go across the river. read more
