I heart Yama Sushi! I never tried the other sushi place in Fallbrook, but it is shut down and Yama always has a crowd! We are treated really well by the staff here, and they seem to remember us every time we come in. Parking sucks bec. its in the Fresh & Easy parking lot, and don't sit by the door on a cool night because it is small and you will freeze. Women's bathroom light switch is on the outside wall before you go in -- I think that is kind of weird! The little salads are so good - amazing dressing, Miso Soup is good, all the apps are good, the special rolls are amazing.. and the Poki salad. I really have never had any bad food here and will continue to be a regular!! Arigato! read more

Yama sushi is not only the only sushi within miles of Fallbrook, it's the best sushi within a hundred miles of Fallbrook. The ownership creates a wonderful friendly environment and the sushi is very good, actually great. If I let them know I'm coming they'll put my beer in the freezer cause they know I like it cold. Of the two sushi spots in Fallbrook, this one is my favorite (I still can't believe that there is even at least one sushi spot in Fallbrook). It's not fancy, but I like the chefs. I trust their taste if I'm experimenting and want to try something new. And they cut up my rolls just right so that I'm not stuffing my face. Yama only has lunch and dinner hours, so it's a no-go for the odd mid-afternoon sushi craving. Don't go out of your way to drive to the middle of nowhere if you're not from/work in Fallbrook. Who would have ever thought little 'ol Fallbrook has GREAT sushi! This place is tucked away in a corner of a strip mall. And the decor is not fancy. But don't let that fool ya. The salmon and tuna sashimi are very generously portioned! And the fish is always fresh. Everything we've eaten here has been good. Went there tonight 1/29/16 was seated by waitress and she promptly got our drinks, that was the highlight of the experience. My wife ordered one roll, I ordered one roll and we ordered teriyaki chicken for my son. 30 minutes later my son got his chicken, we waited another 40 minutes and still didn't have our rolls. We noticed a couple a few tables away that sat down 20 minutes after we did had their food and had ordered 4 rolls. After an hour I stood up to tell the waitress we done waiting and wanted it to go she pointed her finger at me and said "you hold on" I replied with "I'm done holding on" I asked for a manager and got the owner. He started telling different sections get their food at different times... yeah not buying that. He walked away from me in mid sentence saying no discount. Thankfully another waitress helped me and gave us 15% off of our bill but really? I should have left without paying and left the food. What a horrible experience, it'll be a long time till we go back if we ever do. read more

Yama has some of the best sushi I've had in SoCal. Steve the owner is an awesome guy and I really enjoy coming in to see him and the rest of the awesome staff. The fish is really fresh and flavorful. He is meticulous in how he cares for the fish, so I know I'm always tasting the best. I'm lucky to work in the same parking lot and wish I could eat here every day for lunch! Best sushi place in town. Lol. But no really it's great for a low cost strip mall Japanese restaurant where friendly is just the norm, and they treat you like Norm from Cheers. Food is good, and you get the sense they really care here. Love the various rolls. The Katsu Don Bowl is great. Specials are usually spot on. The quality of the meat is a little low so I stick to the yummy fish as much as I can here. Sauces are not anything unique, but they have standard quality on most everything. So I've reviewed this place before and I normally come during the day. I happened to show up at 855pm. I had no idea they closed at 9pm.. regardless two things should have happened, someone should have came and told me "sorry we are closing in 5mins" or "ma'am we're closed" ... or a.."but you can order takeout". Nope, instead I sat down at the sushi bar, the older sushi shef started yelling in Japanese angrily to the waitress and she came over to tell me "you can't sit here, the bar is closed. You have to sit here" I was so confused but since the place is so small I felt super awkward as a customer be told that in front of everyone. Then she came to take my order and told me she needed the whole thing. So i told her to just make it takeout because I can feel the weird vibes of "we don't want to serve you, please leave" cause we're trying to close and go home. I am by no means saying they should stay open for me but to put a customer in such an uncomfortable position is unreasonable. The couple finishing their dinner next to me said something because they saw everything and he told me to bring it up to management. He spoke loudly cause he was super displeased with how I was treated.. but I got my food and left. Honestly, I won't come back. I won't recommend this place anymore, I'll gladly drive to Temecula for sushi because all it takes to lose a customer is POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

Didn't enjoy the meal. Place is dingy and the food was below average. Two small King crab hand rolls and a not so awesome "awesome roll" was $32! For that price it should have been great. I wish I would have just gone into fresh and easy and purchased a pre made sushi roll and saved $20! This is my 4th and final try at this place. We came here on a last minute decision and I'm glad we did. The food was excellent and the menu was vast. We would have to come here over a dozen times to try all of the rolls. SURPRISINGLY GOOD! I didn't expect delicious sushi from Fallbrook but the rolls here are really good! I like the 'I Don't Know Roll' and the 'No Name Roll'.. they're HUGE. Normally I can eat two rolls but at Yama Sushi I only need one to get me full.. With that being said it's a little pricey.. The hubs and I came here last weekend and ordered an app, two rolls, and sodas and the bill was $50.. yikes. The staff is nice, and the restaurant seems pretty poppin.. we sat at the sushi bar because the enire restaurant was full (we prefer the sushi bar anyway). Worst Service I've Ever Had ! Entered into the establishment couple minutes before another older Caucasian couple, and as they had us both sit down the waitress decided to only give them menus as well as take their drink order. We decided to continue to wait patiently an additional 5 minutes as we were obviously being ignored. So we walked out without a word. Me and My Husband felt discriminated against as we were a younger Hispanic couple and felt we did not deserve their time. My parents told me Fallbook had a sushi place. What? Impossible? I hope it was counted as part of Census 2000 because when I was home and in high school in 1990, such a notion of a Japanese place was unheard of. My proud parents took me. They don't have to leave Fallbrook for Japanese anymore. We went at lunch. I ordered something simple - the tonkatsu (fried and lightly breaded pork slices) bento which came with salad, rice and a few California rolls. I also ordered a salmon skin handroll. Rice, salad, and California rolls, you can't screw up. Salmon skin handroll has the potential for higher error, but was done well. But, the tonkatsu received a "C" grade. Sadly, the pork was sliced thinner than I would've liked and a bit dry. Though the breading was adequate, it was fried longer than I would've liked and it tasted "fried" - not "lightly fried." I'd like to say I got a bad batch, but who knows. Maybe next time. read more

We have lived in Fallbrook for 11 years and had only been to Yama one time when we first moved here. We had a bad experience because we arrived near closing time on a Saturday night. They were very rude to us so we never went back. Now I understand they are under new management. We went last night to celebrate my birthday and it was fabulous! Sat at the sushi bar and got to see beautiful meals going out. This place is tiny. The food is excellent! The service is also very good and friendly. Can't wait to go back! read more

They need to provide more staff on Fridays since they already know how busy it gets. 30 min to get an appetizer delivered. 50 min to get Yakisoba noodles. The waitress did tell us they get way too busy on Friday but my question is why don't they hire more staff on that day ? The wait time was not worth it and my friend was starving and upset. This place is amazing!!! I lived in Japan for 2 years and this place is pretty authentic. The udon is amazing! So nice to have something that is authentic in the US. The sushi is pretty good. Their miso soup is delicious. We've tried some appetizers and they were alright nothing to rave about. The staff speaks Japanese as well and are very friendly. The only downside is the decor. I wish it were a bit more updated. It can get very crowded at times though. In my opinion it's worth the wait. read more

THIS PLACE TAKES FOREVER. The food was pretty good but our baked lobster roll was cold in the middle. They charge $2.25 for drinks with no refills & it's just canned soda. We should have went to the dollar tree next door before & bought our own sodas. My boyfriend got his roll first so we shared it, & we waited probably 15 minutes for my roll to come, & by that time I was already full! They took forever to bring my miso soup. I love this place, usually. But tonight they made me feel like the biggest inconvenience to ever set foot in the restaurant. I came in at about 815, and they close at nine and both of the chefs behind the bar were visibly upset that they had to pull the fish from out of the saran wrap to make a couple more rolls. I ordered food to go as well and nobody was psyched that I was there to order it. Another Table behind me ordered a couple more things at about 840 and they almost lost their minds.
