What a wonderful birthday dinner experience we had here for our family. This Ma and Pa, family run sushi spot is poppin! I'm shocked they allowed us to reserve our table because it's a teeny place and it was packed! The To-Go line is never ending and revolving all thru dinner too. Everyone working here is so friendly and accommodating for how hectic it is. The fish was all very fresh and tasty. We had a couple non fish eaters who ordered ramen, chicken teriyaki combo plates and fried noodles too and they were pleased as well. Oh and portions, WOW, you get such large quantity, you feel like your dollar is well spent. We made reservation and they sang to our birthday guests, made them delicious treats and even brought them tiny gifts. I would love for you to experience this place in the depths of Fallbrook. Came in here on a whim; just so I could try out the majority of Asian food cuisine in the neighborhood. Fallbrook is so small, that you can basically go to 3 establishments and have a general consensus of what a general food-type is like in the area. That being said, I've passed this place at least 3 times before and could never participate due to it's working hours. I finally made it in time to catch a "lunch" time eating affair. I immediately wanted to test out their sushi (just due to their namesake). But I also wanted to checkout what they considered a general menu item. So I ordered the Fallbrook Flower and the Sushi Burrito. The wait-time was pretty much standard for waiting in an establishment that had about 6 customers waiting-for; A wait time about 6-10 minutes. The staff was pretty standard and emotionless upon greeting and taking orders; but this didn't bother me because I didn't expect a passionate heart-felt interaction between us. This was, afterall, a fastfood sushi establishment, that had been disguised as a dine-in restaurant. The ambiance had the basic, stereotypical Japanese decor and a tv that was flaunting espn sports on blast. No Asian ambiance whatsoever. I got my order in a timely manner and enjoyed the tastes, as I witnessed the random smiles upon the staff. This was enough to tell me that they were just "doing their jobs", providing a service; but had enough in them to smile for formalities sake. Came here for lunch this past Saturday with my grandmother. We were greeted upon entering and everyone was really friendly. Great customer service overall. Now the food. It was okay, I ate everything. But the serving size was by far the least amount I've ever been served anywhere for a lunch plate. The quality wasn't the best either. The tempura was very soggy. The bright spot was the Spicy Tuna Hans roll I ordered. Was by far the best thing I ordered. If I were to go back, I'd maybe try the sushi because of that. Good place. Service is friendly and prompt. Food is a little pricey, but within reason (unlike the other sushi joint off Mission). For me, the food is really good. I actually really like eating here and if I had the money, I'd go here more often. I used to drop by every time I was visiting my sister while I lived in Orange County; somehow the place makes me appreciate Fallbrook a little more, haha. There are a couple things I don't like, but they don't have anything to do with the food or service...well, slightly. I know the menu has changed over the years. The menu used to be tailored differently (Japanese-style), but I think they had to change it to cater to the American clientele. It's all right, but I'm a traditionalist, haha. I am also not a fan of the block it's on. Granted, it's on Main Avenue, which is a plus for people who are visiting, but it's not on the good side. Everything tasted like it was previously frozen, rice was old and hard, katsu sauce tasted like straight bbq sauce from a bottle. Pretty disapointed. The family was craving sushi and since it's only down the street this is my go to sushi spot. We sat at table 9 and we were served by so many that the service was excellent. We ordered several appetizers and assorted rolls of sushi. This drunk customer made a review that she was made to spend money to use the bathroom, an took 20 mins to get her food. Well she placed her order of sushi and was complaining about why it took so long. Well sushi takes time to cook since you order did you notice that the restaurant is filled with other customers. Yama Restaurant is nestled in a quaint strip mall in downtown Fallbrook. It's not the kind of place you'd expect to find a good sushi joint but Yama is worth the drive. The staff is friendly and the sushi chefs are experienced and also friendly. Their menu was surprisingly extensive and their specials included variety I did not expect to find in Fallbrook. I order the Aji (Horse Mackerel) and Abalone (Awabi) sashimi plate along with Donkatsu (Pork Cutlet) from the kitchen. Also, on the specials board was Toro and Uni. The abalone was alive before it was prepared and the Aji was fresh and prepared expertly by the sushi chef. They also fried the bones - a tasty treat. The pork cutlet was as good as I've had and their house sauce was very nice. Pay to mind to the one or two haters who wrote reviews that have no bearing the quality of the food or service. I came here expecting some delicious sushi, and was unfortunately disappointed by lackluster quality and extremely rude customer service. The rolls we ordered were all fairly tasteless and tasted like grocery store sushi. To make things worse, we noticed not one, but two cockroaches in the building while we were there. The person at the front took forever to acknowledge us, and our waiter barely visited us (they weren't even busy). My water wasn't even refilled once, and it tastes like faucet water (FYI, it is). I overheard the manager talking to one of the other waiters at the table next to ours, and he was extremely rude to her. If I were her, I would've walked out on the spot after being talked to like that. Poor management here creates unhappy employees. Unhappy employees creates extremely poor service. Poor service leads to low-quality food and an apparent cockroach infestation. Stay far away from this place! There are numerous sushi restaurants in nearby areasthat are worth your money. You really wouldn't think Fallbrook would have a legit sushi place for being it such a small, limited town but here it is. Out of all the sushi places I've been to, I'd have to say that this is my favorite. I've been to chains, bigger restaurants, and boujie ones but this is the place. I had come here not knowing what to expect, it has traditional decor, it's small and cozy. You're greeted as soon as you walk in the door. I've tried different things each time I have come here, but my favorite roll is the "Amazing" roll and they aren't kidding, it has Eel and it's always perfect. The sushi chef there is really nice and I enjoyed chatting with him. The owner, Mr. Yama came around to make sure everything was good and is really nice and funny as well. You can watch games on the tv at the counter seating. I've been here several times and I've always been happy with whatever I have ordered. There are plenty of times when I try to find lower carb food, and apart from the sashimi or one or two items at most sushi places, this place has I think like 8 different options for low carb stuff!
