Like the majority of those who took the time to write a review about Yama's, I must admit I agree to the unreliable, unprofessional nature of this business establishment. I tried many times to call Yama's for an estimate on roof repairs. On the owner's initial visit, he said I needed a "new roof". At the time, my roof was five years old, and he knew it. When I said I didn't want a new roof, just the normal maintenance service and repairs, he refused to reply to my calls. The receptionist finally said that she had been passing on all of my messages to the owner. This is a wonderful roofing company based in Hilo that also does work in Kona. One of my biggest pet peeves about some Kona contractors is they charge the perceived "Kona Big Bucks" pricing to Haoles but they don't seem to treat people like that in Hilo. Yama's Roofing did not charge a surcharge to come to Kona, either. I received a couple of bids from other roofing companies, one of which was twice as much as Yama's. They listened to my problem and posed solutions. Part of my problem stemmed from the fact I hired a Kona contractor to put on the roof, and unknown to me, he installed plain rolled comp and then nailed it without even caulking the nail heads. Which caused the roof to leak. He came back and caulked the nail heads, but then it started to cup because he did not line it with blackjack prior to installing. He gave me a 10-year warranty that was worthless. Another roofer insisted on painting a couple of layers of silicone over the roof. Only Yama's had the best plan for this situation, which was a TPO roof that should last at least 20 years. They also installed flashing, which the first contractor did not do. And they installed gutterguard flashing on the sides so all the water runs down to the front. The gutter installation is perfect as well. Now, when it rains, I don't hear the rain hitting the roof, it no longer leaks, is perfectly water tight, and the flashing is correct. They fixed a horrible situation and they were prompt about it. Brian and Yama's roofing recently did a tear off and roof replacement on two of our buildings located on the Keaukaha shoreline. The job was not easy, and involved the replacement of some rotted wood and fascia. Not only did Yama's complete the project days ahead of schedule, they offered the best price out of six other local contractors. I found Brian totally professional and an absolute pleasure to work with. His crew communicated with us well, and the cleanup during and after the project was completed to our satisfaction. They even painted the vent pipes to match the standing seam roof color! We used them a few years back for another re roof project at the same location, and we have had no issues at all with roof leaks or other problems. As much as I wanted to enjoy the work from Yama's, I didn't have the opportunity. Brian seemed so nice during our emailed conversations. We made an appointment for one morning between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. But no one came. We waited till almost 11:00, then called the office and left a message. We have not heard anything from Yamas. I think it's because we are a small job. We requested a quote for our small building but hoped to have future work on our residence. I went to open the gate to welcome Brian at 7:45 yesterday morning. So disappointing to be left hanging. We chose another roofing contractor who is more responsive. read more

Read some of the negative reviews posted here and I'm totally bewildered by what I'm reading. We just had our roof redone by Yama's in Hilo. The crew showed up on the designated day and within three days, the roof was finished. Of course, our house is small and I don't think the job was complicated in any way, but the crew of 8 guys showed up with the materials and seemed to know exactly what they were doing. I feel the price was fair, the service was excellent and the overall feeling I got the whole time the Yama's crew was here was that these workers were knowledgeable, efficient, well-trained and professional. Hardly anyone ever posts a positive review so I'd like to post this about Yama's roofing. From start to finish I have had a great experience with Yama's. I called Brian and he sent me an email so I could pick the color and style of roofing I wanted on my house. He came out and measured my roof and gave me a quote. I live on the other side of the island but he made time to drive out. We agreed on a price and they came and did the work in a reasonable amount of time. I had the unfortunate experience of hiring Yamas Roofing to do some work on my house. I needed a leak fixed and paid to get my whole roof redone. Soon after they completed, I had a leak in the same place I hired them to fix in the first place. I brought it to their attention and scheduled them to come back to check it out/fix it. I was very accommodating with their busy schedule, too. They never showed up AND they blocked my phone number. Seriously, go with anyone else but these guys. The owner of Yama's roofing, Brian, is a local and humble person to work with. He listened to what I wanted (a cooler house). The whirley vent and the foil insulation they installed when changing my whole roof really made the heat in the interior of the house much, much cooler. I also caulked some holes in the ceiling when I saw light peeping through these holes as they removed the roof. These guys did a great job and I would highly, highly recommend them. Even after installing my roof, Brian did things outside of our contract, like change the bathroom venting. Local braddah who will be honest and the bid was very competitive with other roofers. We are very happy with Yama's Roofing because they replaced the old roofing which apparently had several problems. We have a difficult roof to do and they did a really good job. Their new roofing, which fixed those problems, has unexpectedly resulted in cooling our house down. It looks pretty too! When I complained they sent someone out to tell me tough beans that's all we can do!!! Energetic, efficient and excellent! These three adjectives accurately describe Yama's Roofing. We were thoroughly impressed with the energy and efficiency the crew exhibited throughout the three-day project (roof and gutter replacement). Upon arrival they set up their ladders and went straight to work. Everyone immediately set out to different parts of the roof to begin the replacement. When necessary, they worked in teams to quickly identify the most efficient way to address each segment of the roof. I have never seen a crew work so closely and diligently as this one. Everyone knew their role and displayed a camaraderie not too often seen in this type of labor-intensive work. It was quite evident by the friendly bantering that this was a close-knit crew; in turn, I feel this translated into an efficient and effective end product. Their energy level was simply amazing; watching them work gave me a deep appreciation for these men, their skills and the enjoyment they exhibited. This was a well-oiled machine! As with any service job of this nature it all boils down the end result. As homeowners my wife and I were more than pleased. The pride each worker displayed could be seen in the excellence and quality of the finished product. For us effective and efficient communication is important when planning and executing a project of this nature. Working with Brian, Kelly, and their crew was easy. Brian explained the different types of roofing, provided pertinent information before we made our decision, and was not pushy. Brian responded to my concerns immediately, even on weekends and evenings. I had complications with my PV panels being removed/re-installed and although it wasn't his kuleana, Brian was willing to come by to ensure things were being done properly. He came by several times to ensure our roofing project was on schedule and kept us informed on progress. His crew worked hard, was polite, and cleaned up after finishing each day. After the new roof and gutters were complete, I have had so many neighbors and friends comment on how our home looks brand new and how the new roof made such a big difference. Terrible company. It started out ok, they came out quickly and took a look at my roof. Also pretty quick with the quote, but then it went downhill quickly. They told me they could not set up an appointment without a down payment of 65% and while that seemed strange to me I did it anyways since I was unsure if that was just common practice here. I was told 3-4 weeks, but they kept going past their timeline without calling. I understand that in Hilo it's difficult to schedule with the rain, but I still expect phone calls back. After about 6 weeks when I called to complain about the lack of returned phone calls I was told, "do you just want your money back." Another 2 weeks later and I asked for the deposit back. When I got the check back in the mail and deposited into my bank account it bounced- THEY GAVE ME A BAD CHECK. read more

After waiting for longer than over a month from the original appointed date for an estimate to be done on gutter installation. They finally got back to me. I didn't mind too much having to wait because I understand there aren't many companies or people to send out to do the estimates, the problem was the person in office promising to keep me updated and promising to call/e-mail me. Every time this person NEVER called/emailed me. If this person had even called to let me know that the estimator couldn't have made it out to the house it would have been fine....BUT SHE NEVER DID.This happened on 4 separate occasions when the estimator was supposed to have come to the house, each time never showing up. Then I was the one who had to keep call into the office to find out what happened! I even waited a few days after EACH time she promised to call me back to call. The real kicker is the owner, BRIAN PETERSON! The girl that I spoke to finally emailed me the estimate, the NEXT morning Brian emailed me another estimate. BOTH WERE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. the girls estimate included 4 downspouts for 1320 and his estimate included 6 downspouts for 1100. I emailed him letting him know the difference between the estimate and why I would be going with another company who is charging me MORE. He responds by calling me a pain in the ASS customer and saying that he can't compete in price with the other company because you get what you pay for. HE OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T UNDERSTAND ENGLISH BECAUSE I TOLD HIM I AM PAYING THE OTHER COMPANY MORE! SO YES YAMAS ROOFING, YOU DEFINITELY GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Brian Peterson won my trust over two other companies because of his attention to detail. The crew replaced the west side of my roof in one day. I was concerned about sealing the cut ends and he showed me how it was done. I was concerned about holes in the vapor barrier and they fixed the bad spots and reinforced the transition points. My suffered roof damage in Oct 2017. It was inspected by out insurance company and a check was issued. We contacted several roofing companies and accepted a proposal from Yama's Roofing. On Jan 4, 2018 Yama's was given the requested deposit of 65% and the check was deposited by them. Time went by without any contact from Yama's. My wife had to repeatedly call the office to get any kind opf information. The answer was basically," it's been raining and we're behind and we'll call you.". They never did. After 6 weeks I began to become a little worried. My wife continues to contact the office, the "office manager" Kelly continued to take messages and despite numerous requests to have someone in authority call back no one did. Instead Kelly repeatedly passed back messages form the boss. In fact, the clerk intimated it was out fault for the delay as we had not delivered the paint required for the trim. Being the first time this had been mentioned, my wife returned home, and then drove back to Yama's and had delivered a gallon of paint we had gotten for that purpose. On 3/5 I told my wife we should consider asking to have our deposit returned as there had been no work or communication for 2 months. The officer clerk advised my wife that it could be returned minus the monies spent already on materials. The conversation became non -producing so my wife gave the clerk her cell number and departed. She admits she slammed the door. Today, 3/8/18 Brian Peterson drove to my home. He was going to leave the gallon of paint and a letter. He did not knock, use the door bell, or make any attempt to contact my wife while he was there. He was going to drive off without even speaking to her. My wife saw him in the driveway and opened the garage door. Mr. Peterson was less than pleasant and far less then professional. In fact, when he returned to his vehicle he took the time to make an obscene gesture to my wife while parked in my driveway. Peterson is a large man, my wife is a physically frail cancer survivor and this was very disturbing to her. In his letter Peterson said "Due to your unacceptable and rude behavior" he was refunding our deposit in full. BUT, they were willing to "reconsider" if we write a written apology to "Kelly". In searching afterward I have found numerous Yelp reviews that all have basically the same story, going back to 2012. read more

After many phone calls, Brian Peterson came out to take a look and said the repair needed to be done when the roof was dry. It has been the driest January ever and several phone calls later, Brian has not called back or shown up to do the repair. It is now raining and the roof is leaking. Totally agree with the other reviewer. Had them reroof my Mom's house. They totally used some spray paint and left ugly spots all over the roof. Then when it was pointed out, they pointed the finger at HPM blamining them for the spots!!! Called them several times to fix things but never heard from them again. We even called HPM to check it out and they said the color match to cover the nails was not supposed to be sprayed on. It's now got leaks in the roof where there are air vents...I'm not holding my breath for them to come back to fix things!!! Horrible company...would not recommend them to anyone!!!!! read more

Unbelievable Company, they truly need negative stars here !! This company is unreliable & dangerous ! For 2 months we have called telling them about major leaking on a 4.5 year old roof (5 year full warranty on installation by contract). It also leaked badly within a month of installation because they forgot to put on flashing !!! 6 appts set, 6 appts. ignored with no calls or texts, and dozens of calls & lies later still no show. I am told they want to come to my house when I am NOT home to get on my roof?? I said no way and asked for Brians direct number. Finally got Brian Petersons cell number (808-896-6168) and left a very civil message. He calls back in 2 minutes & begins to threaten me !! Started to scream & scream to Come to my office tough guy !!! I dare you come to my office !!" I kept saying why? You need to come repair my roof as by contract. He went on literally screaming for over 5 minutes threatening me ordering me to come to his office then hung up now they will not answer any of our calls !! I guess its time to call a lawyer or the police !! I RECORDED and saved all messages as well as his threatening phone call back to me. We advise to everyone that you DO NOT HIRE YAMAS ROOFING !! They do bad work to begin with they forgot the flashing & now in just 4.5 years the entire front edge is leaking !!! He thinks nothing of lying & threatening old handicapped people !! Back in about 2009, I had a completely GREAT experience with Yama's Roofing for a job in Hilo for my parents. Brian Peterson and his staff were friendly, responsive, and did a great re-roofing job, complete with emailed photos of the finished work. I couldn't recommend them highly enough. Fast forward to about two years ago, when I contacted them for a different, albeit smaller job. As a repeat customer, I thought I would surely get the same great service. Unfortunately this time I had to practically beg them to give me an estimate, that finally came in, but was missing an essential part of the job. When I mentioned it, they said they would get back to me, and never did. I followed up a few times, to no avail. More than a month ago, I thought I would give them one last try. Still no response. Apparently they are too busy with other jobs/customers. It would really behoove them to just say that they're booked until "x" time...or at the minimum, just say they're not taking any new jobs right now... read more

My experience with this company was horrible! Wish I could give a negative score being that it's needed. I had them come out to do a small job car port and it was not completed 12/15/16. It has been over a month and they have not returned to finish the job. They left the roof with no screws on one end and never placed a flashing from the house to car port. I have leaks everywhere and I can't seem to get them to come back after a month and a half later. Sad way to operate a business. I won't expend anymore energy than I need to on this company, but for anyone thinking of hiring them to do a job DON'T. I wish we'd carried out our due diligence with this company by consulting Yelp--we failed. But if I can save folks out there from the heartache of working with this company, then I'm happy to offer my review. They seemed good to begin with but as time went on it was clear they were shoddy in their craft. They literally sent nails through our open beam roof all through the house and they suddenly couldn't provide the skylights we'd discussed with them from the beginning. When we got home to see their finished work it was clear, even to us as customers who know nothing about roofing, that the job wasn't completed. When we asked them to come over and look at their incomplete work they did and agreed that they would finish it--the workers never came back. We sent emails and phone calls to the owner Brian Peterson, but he did not respond. I decided to go and see him--I'm a woman--and he yelled and screamed at me and came up with all sorts of excuses about why he couldn't contact us (over a several weeks period) and why he didn't really have to complete the job anyway. Please do your homework better than we did. Brian Peterson is a scammer and a bully and he will not make good on his promise to provide a professional service. We spent over $20,000 on a roof that is still not completed and we are now hoping it's not going to leak in the next months and years as has happened to other customers you'll read about if you do your research. Brian Peterson's name should be struck off the roofing contractors list in Hawai'i. He comes across as friendly to begin with, but that's his whole scam. read more
