Tiramisu, black sesame and pistachio durian mousse cake slices
    A T.

This is my go-to mousse cake bakery that I've been going to for over 10 years. Their mango mousse is what got me hooked in the first place. The parents always love them because their cakes are not too sweet. My other favourite flavours are raspberry lychee and durian pistachio mousse cake.

Yamato's is located on center street, just off of 16th ave. It is a cozy little cafe with serves cakes, coffee, and other little bakery sweets. It is a bit cramped and cluttered inside, but has room for you to sit down and enjoy their cake pieces. It is relatively quiet. Apart from that, the cakes I've had here are extremely satisfying. About 4/5 years ago, I bought a tiramisu cake from them for my dad's birthday. It was delicious. They have a very unique style of baking. They tend to have more of a Japaneses style cheese/mousse cake. The cakes are always full of flavour with just the right touch of sweetness. I am not a fan of your typical Co-op, Safeway, or Superstore cakes because I find them extremely sweet. Recently, my friend bought me a huge durian cake from them, and it was honestly to die for. I also recently bought the same tiramisu cake from them for my dad's birthday and it was definitely satisfying. Overall, I'd have to say this is one of my favourite place for cake. It always hits the spot! Love it!

I came in about thirty minutes to closing, and all of the cases were empty! But after a minute, an older Chinese man came out to reassure my cousin and I that they still had everything--just name it, he'll bring it! So we got a Japanese Cheesecake and Green Tea Cheesecake. I ate the Japanese Cheesecake that night with my cousin. The cheese flavor is very, very light; it tasted more like a regular Asian cake... Fluffy and fruity. I left the Green Tea Cheesecake in the fridge for two days. My bad! I forgot. The green tea flavoring came out once in awhile if you concentrated really hard, but otherwise it tasted much like a coffee cake. I feel like this is only due to me leaving it in the fridge for two days, though... It would probably have a stronger green tea taste when fresh. I would very much like to come back if I ever get the chance to try their other cakes! Black Sesame caught my eye :3.

In a delicious post-sushi haze from the nearby Shikiji restaurant, we decided we needed some dessert to top off the night. Enter Yamato dessert cafe, a fairly unassuming little dessert bar tucked away in a strip mall on Centre Street a few blocks north of downtown. We walked down and were greeted by the cheery owner and a display case full of cute little asian style cheesecakes, mousses and the wafting smell of sweet desserts. The flavours were varied but all delicious sounding, with white and milk chocolates, green teas and exotic fruits like mango and lychee. A friend swears by the strawberry lychee cheesecake, but I decided to indulge in the strawberry white chocolate cheesecake... to go. It was scrumptious. For those not familiar with asian-style cheesecakes, they are much lighter than the average new york style cheesecake. The texture is similar to a mousse with a strip of white cake in the middle and the flavours tend to be lighter and the cheese taste is also much lighter. The cafe itself is pretty small but cute, and you can sit in and enjoy and drink and some dessert or take it to go. You can also order whole cakes to go. Delicious.

Really unique ice cream flavors!…read more I was previously recommended village ice cream as a place to visit while visiting Calgary. They have an always flavors menu and a seasonal menu flavor. I tried their north 49 honeyberry flavor (always flavors) and their matcha lemon cookie flavor (seasonal flavor). I really liked the north 49 honeyberry flavor because of the slight tartness of the ice cream. I also don't like my ice cream too overbearingly sweet so north 49 honeyberry flavor was a good choice for me. The matcha lemon cookie was a solid optional too for a seasonal flavor. I'm a sucker for matcha flavor and the lemon cookie complemented the matcha well. The lemon cookie also added nice contrasts in texture too. The ambiance is nice too, I like the open space and greenery. I feel like the thorough menu description beforehand was a good touch so I felt very confident in what I wanted when ordering since the descriptions for flavors were so detailed. Would recommend trying Village Ice Cream and there are several locations throughout Calgary!

I am "picky" about ice cream, so I always just get C&C. I have tried the others and some seasonal flavors that my partner likes to get. And while I think they taste good, they aren't my vibes. More recently, I realized they offer soft served dipped in chocolate which I think is also Valrhona's but I've not confirmed and OMG its SO GOOD. The chocolate, when it hardens, is *chef's kiss*, and the vanilla soft serve, you cannot go wrong. The workers are always friendly and quick.

Not sure who's craving dessert at that hour, but clearly there's demand. The interior is cute and nicely decorated, and the menu offers plenty of choices. That said, the options felt pretty standard--mostly crepes or waffles with ice cream and toppings. Nothing really stood out as unique. We ordered the Ferrero crepe with vanilla ice cream. The crepe itself was tasty, but I wish they were a bit more generous with the ice cream and whipped cream since the portions felt small. Overall, it was an okay experience--not bad, but not a must-visit either.

Every time I come, I am consistently seated near the entrance, even though there are many other tables available. I also always order a decaf Americano. On one occasion, despite ordering a decaf Americano, I was served a latte instead and was told that decaf Americano was not available at this café. I have allergies to both milk and caffeine. The drink was only replaced after I clearly explained my allergies to the staff member who was serving me. I was even charged an additional fee for making the drink iced that day. What I found hard to understand was that the same staff member asked me to leave a Google review at the time -- which is why I am writing this review today. This is a menu item I order regularly, which made the situation even more confusing. Overall, the repeated seating choices and lack of attentiveness made me feel uncomfortable and singled out as a customer. I hope the staff can be more considerate and consistent in their service going forward.
