The pastry place is located in a good location. In midtown of Calgary. It is in the basement and I can see people not noticing this place existed. I found this place through Yelp and I am a big fan of pastries and desserts. To sum up, yes I have a sweet tooth. The presentation of their cakes (round, that can serve several people, 6' inch) are very ordinary. It looks like the cake that you get from any any grocery stores. It just doesn't look special. Not picture worthy. So now going to the single serving cakes. They have a good number of selections. When I came there were many selections left. I ended up going with the Diablo Torte. The presentation looks a lot nicer. If you put the single serving cake and the round 6 inches cake together, you would have no idea they are from the same bakery. I came really late in the day (around 5:30). I noticed that they were wrapping the cakes in saran wraps. I guess there is no guarantee that the cakes are made fresh on the day. So going back to the Diablo Torte. It was flourless and at first my concern was it being very dense. It wasn't dense but at the same time, it was not fluffy either. The cake wasn't super fresh. The cake kind of crumbled as I poke my fork into it. The chocolate on the top cracked (not a major concern for me). The chocolate in the cake wasn't as smooth and creamy as I hoped it. The cake seems to have a bit too much moisture in it. I am guessing the moisture must have been it sitting in the fridge too long. The Diablo Torte is a flourless cake and flourless cake requires a lot of skills to make. Yes the Diablo Torte does have the spicy cayenne kick. I wish it had more of the chocolate flavor. I have had really good cakes in the past. The cake I got is slightly lacking in flavor but still Decadent Brulee's Diablo Torte was not bad. The single serve cake itself was $7.09. Price vs taste! Not sure how they can charge that price. I mean at least it has a really nice presentation. The bakery is more of a grab and go place. There is only one table with 3 chairs. It would be difficult for a place for small talks. Also the place is quite small. I peaked into the kitchen and it seemed like the kitchen area is bigger than the area outside. Maybe, they get a lot of orders on cakes to go for parties. Yes they also serves coffee but from the looks of it, coffee is not their specialty. They also serves other pastries like cookies and etc. However, their cookies are not as delicious looking at some cookie specialty stores. It looked somewhat dry. I do want to point out that in Calgary there are not a lot of pastries and cake places. It is good there is Decadent Brûlée. Where I am from there are dime a dozen. read more

A work colleague introduced me to the Brûlée Bakery on a nicely warm and sunny Saturday morning. We were walking down Electric Avenue, when she made a hard turn at an unmarked door and then hard left to downstairs. Upstairs was a cooking store and school, with the Metrovino Wine Shop farther through. She knows of this place as she lives in this general area and the next door spa she goes to serves Brûlée Bakery goods to their customers.. Her first reaction when I started asking for details of this place was "Don't write this place up on Yelp!" Too Late, as the secret of this wonderful little bakery is already out. I ordered a pecan roll that was the best warm and sweet piece of baked goodness that I had enjoyed in a very long time. And if actually lived in Calgary, I would be back often for the breads and the various tempting examples of Le Gâteau Élégant. I was so impressed that later in the afternoon, I circled back by myself and snagged a few breakfast scones for the next day and after. It was all good to the very last crumb. read more

I was walking down the street thinking about mundane things like how to better organize my closet and suddenly I felt like I was in a cartoon. You know when a cartoon bear is walking along and suddenly a smell cloud wanders through the air and he sniffs and follows it until he spots an amazing picnic through the bushes? It was JUST like that. Except the scent cloud in this case consisted of heavenly, cinnamon sugar. I followed my schnoz to this bakery establishment and the warm cookies tasted just like the air had smelt. Ambrosia! I have since ordered cakes from here and this is where Brûlée shines for me (as I don't just drop in to sample goods often). Hidden gem alert! This place is fantastic! Seriously you guys, if you want a special treat or you just feel overly indulgent this is place to go. It's a tiny little bakery on 10th where everything is made fresh! There are tons of gluten free options, but since it was my birthday I opted for a mini-cheesecake with fresh fruit on it. My favorite part; the gooseberry on top. You see I have an odd obsession with gooseberries, I think they are fantastic and could eat them all day long! I brought my creamy delicious treat back to the office to snack on during the afternoon and it was even more delicious than I expected. This tiny bakery really out does itself, the melt in your mouth goodies are seriously worth it. They don't have a huge selection but that's what makes it unique - it's not overdone, and frankly it kind of reminds me of a European bakery or something you would find in New York which just makes it that much more desirable. Mmmm... an underground bakery. Literally. Brulee dwells in the basement half of one of the buildings on 11th Ave. The first time I visited was to buy myself a piece of birthday cake. The second time, to buy a friend a piece of birthday cake. I was that impressed with my own piece. It's no wonder Brulee has such a good reputation--your dessert is baked and dressed to impressed with copious amounts of TLC in every bite. The cheesecake is next on my list to try as suggested by Gimlet B, but you'll be pretty safe with anything in there... unless of course you're looking to avoid satisfying your sweet tooth. Hubs favourite cake flavour is lemon, or something citrusy, with his birthday coming up I was looking for a cake option for his and read multiple positive reviews of the lemon creme cake on Yelp. I emailed the bakery and they quickly confirmed the order, the best pickup time and I was all set. The bakery is downstairs in a building on 11th ave but is easy to locate, there's street parking and lots of signage. Oh, my the bakery smells delicious, it's small space with some display shelves for items to pick up on the day off and a small seating area. The cake was beautifully decorated, they wrote happy birthday on it and decorated it with fresh flowers on top. The cake was delicious, nice and lemony but not to tart. A+! read more

Absolutely delicious. Quaint downstairs location limited seating mostly take out. But the coffees/teas and dessert and limited food selections are absolutely mouth watering. Brûlée has turned me into a dessert person. I now sometimes look off into the distance and think about Brûlée's sugar cookies (which are so buttery delicious I wish they were a food group). Everything on their menu that I've tried I've loved. Whether it's the sugar, white chocolate macadamia nut or peanut butter cookies or their custard filled, fresh fruit topped, crumbly crust butter tarts; it's exactly what you'd expect of a great dessert; a treat full of well balanced flavor that leaves you satisfied without feeling too full. Well, they're a bit hard to find, as they're just underneath the Cookbook Co. on 11th AVe SW. They're definately busy baking all the time, but I've seen them sell out often. They're simply marvellous at what they do, and what they do is simply delicious. Their service is fast and efficient, and they're quite a friendly staff. I wandered into this tiny bakery on a whim while furniture and home decor shopping. I was feeling hungry and wondered if this place would have something good to eat. They don't offer much in the way of savoury foods but they do have quiches and some cheeses. I ordered a cheesecake brownie to go and it was incredibly good! Big piece and under $3 with the tax. We came to this place by Yelp review never regretted it! My husband and I were looking for a good cake maker to make us a special cake for our baby gender announcement to the family. The whole idea was that we ourselves didn't know the gender either so we needed complete secrecy up to when the big reveal was to unfold. We got a sealed envelope from the doctor and gave it directly to the Brulee staff. They took it in the back, wrote down on the order what they needed to and sealed it back up, then gave it to us. When we were to pick it up they let us know that if it's a girl the layer beneath the chocolate frosting is going to be pink, if it's a boy it's going to be blue. Everything was done and ready in just three days and the cake looked amazing. The funny thing is that we announced everything at our uncle's birthday party so the cake had to look like an actual birthday cake. Absolutely awesome!
