Just tried Yami Express in Lyndhurst and it's a great new hidden gem for Chinese-Japanese fusion. They've got a fun, creative menu with all kinds of sushi--including sushi burritos and even sushi tacos--which you don't see everywhere. If you're in the mood for something more classic, their bento boxes and combo deals are a solid value. You can build your own with 1-4 entrées, rice or lo mein, and a drink--pricing ranges around $8-$15 depending on how many items you choose, which is hard to beat. Everything tasted really fresh, and you can tell there's a high turnover. We did have to wait a bit, but honestly appreciated it knowing the food was being made fresh. The vibe is casual and easy--perfect for takeout, but there's dine-in seating too. Bonus: they even have a Japanese claw machine inside, which adds a fun touch. I was disappointed. To be clear, the restaurant was mostly clean (someone lost some fake hair kind of accessory on the floor in the dining room), and the counter service was pleasant. But this place gets great reviews, I went in there hungry, and I couldn't bring myself to finish my food. I got the lo mein, the pineapple chicken, and the coconut shrimp. The portion sizes were roughly comparable to Panda Express, or maybe a bit smaller. The prices were roughly comparable as well, maybe a bit smaller there too. The noodles were overcooked, the chicken had a different texture than any chicken I'd ever had before (not necessarily bad, but definitely different), and the coconut shrimp, which I was most excited about, was just bad. I probably ate the most of the chicken, but I only ate about a third of the food on my plate. Maybe I hit them on a bad night. The reviews would seem to indicate that that was the case, but my wife would give a similar review to mine, so it's not just me... at least on that night. read more

Twelve bucks gets you a plate heavy enough to bruise your knee and a drink to wash it down. The food? Fresh, hot, and surprisingly honest for a first night. No gimmicks, no self-important plating. Ambiance of the building is calm and collective. It has kept the same type of food service as the last food place that was in there. The hot food was pretty good, but you can find more authentic Chinese/oriental foods within the mile. The sushi is unmatched, and I would go there again just for that. Overall, pretty good replacement for the Boston Market that was in its place. read more

Kids had the day off from school today, so I asked them where they wanted to eat. We've seen Yami's "coming soon" sign - it seems - for months on end, but found that they finally opened. Curious, the kids said they wanted to try something new and chose Yami. Pretty plain interior, but ample seating for anyone choosing to dine in - although I would suspect that most of their traffic would take their food to go. I got 2 kids meals for the girls - both chose the noodles; one went with chicken, the other shrimp. I got the combo 1 with fried rice and Beijing beef. They have a grand opening promo and all menu items are discounted through the end of the year. Nice!!! The food... My fried rice was hard - like it had either been undercooked, or it had been sitting in the warmer all day. I was also taken aback by how sweet the beef was. The girls seemed to enjoy their food well enough, but compared it to the typical Asian fast food at the mall. My biggest nitpick is this: Only my combo came with a drink. I guess the kids meals don't come with a drink. No problem - all they wanted was water anyhow. So I asked for 2 cups of water. I was then told that I could get any drink I wanted from their drink machine, and that includes water. I clarified that I was requesting cups for my girls. I was then apologized to because their drink cups must be paid for, so if I wanted 2 more cups I would have to pay for them, then my kids could get water from the drink fountain water dispenser. Dear ownership: I can't imagine that it would be too difficult or too expensive to have a stack of those small, clear cups that most other fast casual restaurants have so that your customers who only want water can enjoy their meal with a complimentary cup of water without forcing them to buy a cup. read more

it's really too bad and I'm very disappointed because at first the food and service were excellent now they've run coconut shrimp by 12:30. The service is incredibly slowwwwwwwwww. I waited for 20 minutes in line while only one and a half people were being served in that time and when they ran out of coconut chicken, they said there will be no more. Having waited for months for this place to open, I was hoping to have another place to buy Sushi made to order. Well, the joke's on me, I guess. It's a place that sells BAD Asian food with a meager four Sushi roll options. I had Lo Mein, "Japanese chicken" and chicken Gyoza. At best the food was barely warm, dried out, and without any distinctive flavoring. There were several other choices, none visually appealing. The counter help knew nothing about the food. I would like to say this place was terrible so I will not have to fight the crowds...but this place was awesome. Think of it as a Panda Express but on steroids. The portions were HUGE and delicious. At first the food look a little underwhelming as I was there before the dinner rush, but it tasted awesome. The girl behind the counter was very friendly and gave good quick service. This place is Amazing! There's a large variety of delicious Asian entrees. A container of fried rice or noodles with 3 dish choices was only about $12. The workers were very congenial and the place was immaculate. read more
