I have been here many times over the years and I am pretty sure this is the first time I've completed a review. Let me say that with all these visits over maybe 10 years, we've never had a bad meal. The place shows its age but always seems clean. The staff seem to clean up quickly behind each customer. As for today's meal and service. The wifey had the French Toast with a side of sausage and we'd say this I about the best flavor French Toast around. The sausage also has a very good flavor. As for me, something told me to get the Open Face Turkey. It also was good. Had a decent flavor but wasn't exactly outstanding. But again a nice meal. First time I've had this here and if I had a craving, id get again. I still think my favorite is the French Toast or in the past I've had Chip Beef and I think Biscuits and Gravy. I assume they still sell those but the turkey was calling to me. As for the staff: always very friendly and today was no different. In the past, this place was a cash-only place but I noticed today they took cards. Not sure what cards or if there is a charge for using a card like many places now. But I was prepared for cash and paid by cash with a cash tip, which I nearly always do when dining out. As for my review. I gave this a 4-star but I would have given a 4 1/2 star if that was an option. So stop in and have a nice meal. read more

If you want a perfectly standard, home cooked no frills breakfast this is the spot. I am completely new to Petersburg and on my first visit I felt welcome and was treated with the same friendliness and warmth as the regulars. People of all ages, colors, and vibes eat there and everyone is cool with one another. Many stop in for takeout. Many pop in to order and wait outside. I personally like the omelettes and I like that they use fresh, not canned, mushrooms. The cheese is your standard American cheese singles--obviously as far away from gourmet as you can get but it's good nonetheless. You know the food is prepared and served by hard working local people. Definitely get here before the church crowd or wait until they leave. Breakfast is served all day. We stopped in for a late breakfast and if it wasn't for the fact that I'm pregnant and was starving I would've walked back out the door. 1) no social distancing enforced at all. Even the waitresses while taking orders removed their masks to talk to the customers. 2) OJ is poured out of a store bought half gallon jug 3) I watched an old lady make kids drinks and used her hands to insert the uncovered straws into the cups after touching other things and walked it over to the table yuck!. 4) There are no non-pork options 5) We ordered French toast with strawberry toppings. They gave me toppings on the side that clearly came out of a store bought can (see pic). The French toast was disgusting. 6) Dishes were full of water spots. They get 1 star because the service wasn't horrible but never again will Ieat there. Too pricey for the quality of food they served. read more

This Yankee Diner is Yankee Doodle dandy! I love cute little mom and pop cafés like this one!! Great for spot for a good ole country breakfast or a hearty lunch! Being a self declared southern Belle I'm in love with a good diner. Well welcome to the Yankee Coffee Shop where it's a hidden jewel in plain sight. You are always greeted when you arrived and instructed to pick your seat. A friendly waitress greets you at your table or booth( Mickie somehow always greets me first). As your drink order is taken and for some of us breakfast foodies... we'll just say I love my breakfast! I'm a fan of the pancakes. You might want to order just one because I swear that delicious wonder is the size of the plate. The pancakes comes with scrumptious flavors( strawberry, blueberry or apple) and it's the filling of the pancake. I wanted to explain that it's not baked in but filled with fruit sensation. Add in some scrambled eggs with cheese, grits and I add in corn beef since the breakfast meat choices are all pork. Before I'm 3 sips into my coffee my plate arrives and it's time to GRUB. First off the smell!! Wow that should have been our first hint that maybe this wasn't the place for us. I ordered a Ruben for $10 and was sooo sad. It was tiny and greasy with a "side" of potato salad. The potato salad was about 2 spoons worth and came recommended over the coleslaw, the coleslaw must be really awful because the potato salad must have been made with canned potatoes because the texture made it inedible, and I'll eat almost anything. I took a stroll and wanted to have an early breakfast. I live nearby. Google shows open at 0530. I get there at 0645 but the door shows it opens at 0700. Okay no problem I'll wait. I'm greeted sort of, by an older woman with a limp, she asked if I had money, brought me a coffee in a to go cup and saw me as a huge inconvenience. I noticed quickly that I was not welcomed and it had to do with me not being a regular, having a small animal with me(which he has been there before no issues) and the way I was dressed (I was in sweatpants) I have a small 7lb cat in a large backpack carrier. I have eaten here before with him as I said and they told me they refused to serve me because of him and because i didnt have service papers with me. they did not offer me a to go order or anything. I felt heavily discriminated against. avoid this place at all costs if you arent from around petersburg. they ONLY prefer regulars and dont even have menus out because they never anticipate anyone new trying their establishment. it is a shame because the first time i went to eat there it was WONDERFUL, good food and service. I can't believe there are any negative reviews!! Yankee Coffee Shoppe is iconic. I have so many memories eating here with my grandparents. My grandparents were born and raised Yankees so my grandpa was so excited when he first found this place. We would come every Saturday morning. It's got that good small town feeling. It's a little crowded inside but that's part of the goodness of it. The food is so delicious!! I'm a big breakfast person. I could honestly eat breakfast for every meal. And here is so dang good! The home fries are my favorite. No one does home fries like they do. The lunch options they have are good too but I usually stick with the breakfast. It's a must for me! 5 stars for me!!! My first time here. It was okay. Potatoes had no flavor and no salt and pepper to taste. They were dry. My omelet was okay, when I went to slice it in half to eat there was some egg a little runny, not cooked like the rest of the omelet. Best coffee and breakfast place in Petersburg. How they have survived considering the area they are located and I have no idea, it has been a staple with my family and other families for decades. You can really sum up the taste and quality of the food here in one word "homemade"; but who likes short reviews? I ordered French Toast, eggs, bacon, and homefries. The French Toast is made with French Bread and the result is delicious! The French Bread seems to really absorb the ingredients of the batter and anything else you put on it. I had mine with powdered sugar, butter, and syrup and I wasn't disappointed. The eggs and bacon are nothing special but they do have the homemade look and taste. The real surprise of the meal were the homefries! They're not fried at all, they're zesty delicious coated potatoes and I highly recommend them! read more

After reading the reviews I thought I'd be walking into another 5-star review location! Sadly that was not the case. I felt as though I was at a small diner back home with mediocre service and comparable food quality. I'd hardly consider this a coffee shop, and it certainly not on the same level as Demolition Coffee in historic Petersburg. I had the Steak and Eggs. Typically this is a meal that's hard to butcher. Sadly, my steak had the consistency of beef jerky even though I ordered the steak "medium." The eggs, grits and biscuits were all good and saturated with butter :) The service was OK but it seemed like the three servers in the restaurant were stretched thin and could not adequately wait on their patrons. Additionally, myself and three others waited for 5 minutes waiting on one of the waitresses to man the register so we could pay. I might give them another shot to redeem themselves, but I was so disappointed in what I originally thought would be a great breakfast. read more

The only thing I don't like about Yankee Coffee Shoppe is that it seems to close at 2pm during the week. Not sure what weekend hours are. Today (first time eating there) I had the club sandwich, and it was the best club I've had in years. Also had a side of onion rings, and they were excellent!
