12/27/25 My wife and I were on the road traveling to Asheville for New Year's and needed a place to grab breakfast. I checked Yelp and found Buttery Bakery, so we decided to give it a try. It's not far off I-95, located in a nice small town with several restaurants that looked very good for dinner. Parking is mostly street parking, and while it's a bit limited, we were able to find a spot. Buttery Bakery is a small place. When you walk in, there's a counter with pastries on display and an order counter to the left. There's also a small seating area. My wife ordered a biscuit with egg, bacon, and cheese, and I had a croissant with bacon, egg, and cheese. Both were excellent. The croissant was extremely flaky and flavorful, and the biscuit was just as good. We also picked up a chocolate croissant to eat later. It was very good, though it could have used a bit more chocolate. Overall, this is a great stop for breakfast, and we would definitely return when we're in the area again. read more

We randomly found this spot while roaming around older Town after going to the farmers market. It's a very intimate place, with little seating. Most tables are for 2, with a couple bigger tables. I ordered shakshouka: the flavor was good, blend of veggies in a tomato base. It was very soupy and the eggs weren't poached, granted the menu does say they're soft baked- as in the whites weren't all the way done. We also got like a chocolate filled croissant, regular coffee, latte, and a crab quiche. The coffee was really Good, smooth. My husband liked the crab quiche which says a lot bc he's not an egg eater. You have to order at the counter but they do bring your food to you. Overall, I'd go back. If I got the shakshouka again, I'd ask for some specs. read more

Stopped by with my little bro for some pastries because I always see this place on Facebook and the menu looks awesome. I ordered a coffee glaze and pecan cruffin to eat there, bro chose a savory ham and cheese pastry. I also ordered a chocolate croissant and an everything bagel croissant pastry that was filled with cream cheese to go. We asked for the cruffin and ham and cheese to be warmed so we could eat it there. We didn't order anything to drink because my brother doesn't drink coffee and most of the other stuff that we noticed (trying to be really quick since there were people now crammed into the line behind us) didn't really go with our choices. Like they have pineapple jarritos sodas but that sounds awful with a coffee pastry. On to the food... We are on the fence about it. The cruffin was really tasty with the coffee glaze, but it just cracked everywhere and the cruffin just became a coffee shrapnel-laden mess. The best part was the glaze and it is now laying in 100 pieces on the table, the napkin, my shirt... maybe if I had taken it home where I could get a plate? (they just gave us the two warm pastries and two cold ones in the same to-go box even though we said we were going to eat there and then take the other two to go). Brother was not a fan of the ham and cheese since the croissant was just kinda croissant-ish (a little buttery, very crispy and falling apart) but it comes with a tiny sliver of sliced ham and a much larger slice of Swiss cheese - that completely overpowered EVERYTHING. It was quite... aggressive since you couldn't taste anything else to balance it out. The chocolate croissant I took home and heated in the microwave was okay. Nothing to write home about, but it was good and very flaky, and the layers were paper thin - which was cool - but it didn't taste any more special or yummy than the ones I get in the bakery cases at Lidl for 1/5 the price. I wouldn't be against getting it again, but I also wouldn't go out of my way when I already grocery shop at Lidl... The everything bagel stuffed cream cheese one though... that was AWESOME. Hands down the only thing I would order again and go out of my way to head down there to order. It is pretty unique (pretty sure I haven't found them anywhere else yet), STUFFED with cream cheese and loaded with all the everything bagel seasoning that makes everything bagels rock. I HIGHLY recommend that item. The place is just what you expect from something in the downtown section of Petersburg. Cozy, warm, some comfy seating mixed in with the wooden chairs. Definite tea house/bakery vibe going on. A bit on the small side, especially where you place your order. I do prefer some of the more open and spacious places around these parts, but this is definitely a vibe I can occasionally get behind. read more

I enjoyed my chocolate croissant which was flaky and buttery. I also grabbed the crème brûlée donut but by the time I left Petersburg and got home to Midlothian the donut had lost the brûlée topping and it turned soft. I did enjoy the cream filling it was similar to that of the Bavarian cream. Service was awesome, the staff was very friendly and thanked me for stopping by. What a gem! I got a breakfast sammy that had thick cut bacon, egg and cheese on it. It was so large I had half for breakfast and half for lunch. I also had the French press coffee (a first). My mom said that this place had pretty good tarts and other breakfast related things so I had to try it out. When I walked in the bakery, it looked so fancy inside I felt like I was out of place, but the best part was the staff were pretty friendly and greeting. I ordered a breakfast sammie, a cookie and a mushroom tart while my mom ordered a cinnamon roll and banana bread. She also ordered a quiche but she ate it and she said it was delicious. As for the food I ordered, everything was spot on, especially the mushroom tart and the sammie. Really, I was just in Italy for a month and the au pain chocolate croissant here was better than half the pastries I had there (perhaps the ingredients might be cleaner/organic ancient grain)! It was 2/3 foam 1/3 (coffee/milk). I swear I was only drinking foam out of the large cup. I don't really know if that's the standard. I know some people like extra foam in their coffee. Cute cozy cafe in downtown Petersburg. A delightful date spot to enjoy breakfast, pastries, coffee, and tea. Hours are limited so stop in when you have a chance. Listen stay away from their Bacon Egg & Cheese on one of the golden flaky buttery croissants because it will ruin any other one you ever had! No comparisons. Went with a fellow yelper (Jess S) to see if her enthusiasm matched the reality. Wow. Great bakery. The selection was ample, and everything -- EVERYTHING -- was over the top good. Flaky pastry with excellent lamination shows that these folks know a thing or two about incorporating butter. Specific items: -- the Paris croissant (capicola and brie) was truly great. The croissant was flaky but held up well to the innards, and the strong meat and cheese offered a complement to the dough without dominating. -- the double ginger cookies were flavorful too. I am a ginger fan, and these cookies were everything I wanted in ginger, in a cookie that was halfway between a snap and a pillow -- in other words, just right. -- the rye chocolate cookies (yes, you read that correctly) was a surprise that I just had to try. Great chocolate, with just a hint of the savory rye flour that was headlined. Definitely a heartier texture than the ginger cookies, I liked them. -- the chocolate croissant and sweet cheese and raspberry croissants were both very nice, and to be honest I was even more impressed with the layered pastry than the overall flavor. Again, mad skills at work here. It's not that the flavors weren't there, it's just that the pastry was so good that the pastry was the memory you take away. As for the location, Petersburg is a bit of a hike from our area (40 mins each way) but well worth it for the quality. Parking seems to be hit and miss, with lots of yellow lines on the curbs and "don't you dare" private lots on the near corners. Do your best. What an absolute delight! I anxiously awaited for this bakery to open its brick and mortar location and could not be happier, now that it's arrived! Everything I've had has been delicious--and I've tried a lot of things on the menu! My favorites include the mushroom danish with a delicate parmesan and rosemary sauce, the Paris croissant with Capicola ham and brie, and croissant filled with a sweet cheese and housemade raspberry jam. The pastry itself is beautifully made, flaky, yes, but deeply flavorful. The cookies are a fun, sweet distraction from the pastries--the double ginger cookies are something special, indeed! Chewy and spicy! OH and the croissant filled with cream cheese and topped everything seasoning was such a good surprise. (It's surprising because honestly it might be better than an everything bagel with cream cheese, with its richness of flavor both inside and out! Buttery pastry with cream cheese? Um, yes please!) The Boston cream pie cruffin was really interesting, but it's bigger than you realize, so beware--you're taking on a very rich, creamy monster of a sweet! The pain au chocolat is so simple, but it's so perfect with a cup of coffee. I'm really looking forward to trying the Basque cheesecake, the quiche, and the ham and cheese danish. They offer breakfast sammies, which looked generously filled. So those are on my list to try as well! Pro tip: Be sure to come early--things do sell out quickly! I'd say get there before 10 if you want first dibs on your favorites! The interior is cozy, warm, and welcoming. Seating is nice, but it's a small shop, so it might be a little crowded for some. They have outdoor seating that looks like it'll be lovely once it's warm. Bathroom is very clean and accessible for those with special mobility needs. But speaking of accessibility, those who have special equipment for mobility or are fat may find entering difficult, as it is a historic building with narrow double doors, one of which is locked for the most part. I found it necessary to turn to the side and squeeze through. I'm sure they'd open the other door if need be, but it would not be without a little attention drawn and discombobulation. I'm hoping the double doors will both be open during warmer months! To find their current menu, I recommend you go to their Facebook page.
