Our day started interesting enough, after driving fo 2 1/2 hours to get to the Blue Willow Tea Room. We were first hit by a deer about 20 minutes from our destination. We then arrived at our destination , which was a birthday/ mother's day surprise for me , planned by my daughter and granddaughters. We were greeted by the rudest person I have ever encountered in my 70 years. Reservations were made for 4 and my daughtered ask her aunt to come along which made it 5. She didn't think it would be a big deal just add a chair to our table. I wasn't aware chairs couldn't moved but apparently, not here not today.We were stopped in front of a party seated with appx. 10 ladies and she proceeded to scold my daughter as if she were a child. Telling her this was her fault for not calling to change reservation, she could have fixed it. Well, me with my simple self , wondering why can't you fix it now instead of being so rude. She then corrected my granddaughter for wanting sugar in her tea, said it was sweet enough. This may be true it was a dessert tea, but the way she said things and her tone was Rude. Then looked at me because I ordered same tea and said do you hear what I told them. Said a seat couldn't be added because they needed room to serve from side board. Interesting never used it while we were there. Also, empty tables entire time of our visit. It is a shame the tea itself was good as well as the tea room, but we could do without the hostile woman who wouldn't let it go. Ask my sister as we were leaving why she needed their business card. Well thats self explanatory or you wouldn't have been concerned. Told her we didn't need to come back! Mind you she did not see the response she should have recieved because I was trying to calm the situation down. Maybe a bad day, I don't think so, bad day dosen't mean rude, loud, and unacommadating for your guest. I have seen post from others thinking it is towards certain race. So I've been eyeing this place for a while, excited to try a tea room. When I entered I was seated in the back at a tiny table. The waitress made a comment said "I have to come back when I'm not in a rush" . As customers behind me made jokes about my hair and outfit, because I had an afro. The owner took my order and as he brought it said "Here's all this food for the gorilla girl". Laughing in my face. They were all making subtle raciest comments because I am a black woman. I been coming here for yeeeaaarrrrssss! Everything is usually tip top! Today we came in for a half cream tea, scones and tea... we were greeted by the somewhat abrupt hostess/server. When I asked a question, I received a unwelcoming answer... "that's what it says in the sign outside." Well, I didn't read the sign, I just walked in. I found her demeanor a bit brusque. The scones were cold and dry this afternoon. Thank goodness for cream and jam! I miss the "old days" of hospitable and inviting salutations! We had a family members birthday here and the service and food were very good. It's a quite home like environment where you can enjoy conversation. The food and service is great. However, if you want something more than tea sandwiches, sweets or scones this is not your place. It is lovely. If you love a tea room experience this is one of the best in the area! Tucked away in Petersburg is this quaint tea room and antique shop. We drove by lots of antique shops in town, this one seems pretty nice even if it didn't serve tea. I dined in with my mom and a friend a few weeks ago. We were able to get a last minute reservation and enjoyed going out of the way (from Virginia Beach) to something different. The restaurant is older, like much of the city and has great wooden tables and heavy chairs. It really had a parlor feel when you sit down. The tea they offer is a wide selection with black, green, red, and herbal kinds. Bags not loose. The covid-19 protections hindered tea serving a bit, you can normally choose your pot and cup/saucer, I think. There are various 'sizes' of high tea you can get and we chose the one with the full 3-tier of foods, and it comes with soups. We're glad we ordered 2 tiers for the 3 of us. The soups were utterly divine and we all were in love with them. The tiers of food had 2 of everything and would work great for 2 people. The bottom had delicious sandwiches, the middle one was appetizers like fried spinach wraps and quiche, the top was small desserts like cheesecake bites and cake. The 3 of us all had some likes and dislikes, but nothing much was left behind once we got to trading (I ended up with all the tuna fish because I like it). Staff was friendly and able to tell lots about the restaurant and town. My dining partners thought they were a little nutty, but personally I enjoy that. My only qualm was that staff disappeared after dropping off the last of the food. There were some cleaning up processes going on at another table and in the back. I had to flag down a different staff member for a box. Folks with any sort of mobility issue: The restaurant is in an old building with an antique store. The front door is heavy and there is a step. Had a great time. For my first visit I was pleasantly pleased. I took my niece to a birthday that was being held for a seven year old. It was a great setting for a small party for a little girl. Everyone was able to choose to flavor tea that they wanted and received there own teapot. We had three courses if you will. A scone with homemade cream/butter, then some minestrone soup, then a three tiered finger food tower. The staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. I would definitely recommend this place to any group of females that want to have a little time with the girls. Everything is made in house and fresh. I do not appreciate being shush or talked to like a kindergarten. I was with a party of 4 for lunch at about 12:30pm on Wednesday November 15, 2023. The waitresses was wonderful very polite and accommodating. I asked if I could have the 1/2 chicken salad sandwich and cup of soup, I asked if I could have the chicken salad with out the bread. The order was taken and a few minutes later the cook or somebody came out and very loudly stated that this is not the way they do things and I could order the trio of tuna, chicken ablnd ham salad. I stated that that was not what I wanted and she proceeded to loudly berate me to which I stated to put the chicken salad on white bread and I would just not eat the bread. I was embarrassed and mortified by this treatment. When the soup and sandwich came out I was happy to see that she had accommodated my request and remark to my friends how pleased I was until she loudly stated yes she had done it this time but would not do it again. My group was stunned at the behavior and treatment I received. I said to my group that I probably would not come back. Then a man came over and stated the meal looked ugly and the presentation was awful. I stated the presentation look good to me. I didn't know who he was, his personal presentation was messy and then he stated he was the owner. As he was leaving our table area he told us not to come back. My group continued our meal and were discussing among ourselves how rude and inappropriately we were treated when the cook or what ever she was told us we could leave and our bill would be covered. We did not leave finished our meal. The waitress was very upset with our treatment and embarrassed. We told it was not her fault, left her a good tip(I hope she kept all of it) and left. We will not be back. As one of my friends said, she had never been treated so rudely even in a fast food place. We were gobsmacked by the rudeness. No need to go to Richmond's Jefferson Hotel when you have this right here in town! The Tea Room is lovely and the staff were very friendly. If I were based my review on that alone, the review would be five stars. When I shared afternoon tea with a friend recently, I was disappointed that several items were clearly purchased rather than baked in-house. This included the lemon pound cake, the cheesecake bites, and a mini-cinnamon roll that I can buy in a grocery store. I expect the mini-quiches were also purchased in bulk and warmed up. This place is so adorable, and the perfect spot to unwind when we spend the day walking around the fun antique shops in Petersburg. We ordered the full afternoon tea, which was lovely and tasty, with our favorite items being the delicious soup and the great scones. The interior decor is very cute and gives patrons lots to look at. The service experience was odd, though. I asked for black tea and was told they don't have that. I pointed out the menu listing english breakfast, and the server told me that is not black tea. I have lived in both England and Scotland. My wife and I deeply love and return to the UK as often as possible, which is one of the reasons this little place in Petersburg caught our eye. Our cabinet at home is filled with British tea. I assure you...english breakfast is black tea. So that was weird. Once the tea came, we were advised to leave it to steep indefinitely. I explained that we preferred to remove the tea from the water after steeping time so it wouldn't get bitter, and the server told me it wouldn't get bitter and that she has left her tea to steep for two hours with no bitterness. That's not how tea is steeped. It was bizarre to us that a tea room attendant was so untrained in the basics of making and serving tea correctly. We had this advice three times, from two different servers, throughout the experience. I have no idea why they were so adamant about it. Milk was not served (also weird) but we didn't ask for it because we didn't want another round of "advice". Although the service was so awkward, the food was filling and tasty, the environment is cozy, and the menu offers lots of options. All up, I would return to Blue Willow because it seems to be a great business that simply needs to train a few empoyees on tea service and customer service. That's an easy fix, and I hope they make it, because it's great to have such a cute spot in Petersburg. read more

(First, we showed up today when we had been told over the phone they were booked. There was a table for my mom and me after all...yay! ) I was really excited to be taking my mom there since I had heard such great things! The entire experience did not disappoint. We had a lovely waitress...table on the left around 12:30- you know who you are!- the carrot relish ROCKS in the most unsuspecting kind of way. Devonshire-yum!!
