5 years ago, I found this establishment in the corner of my eye while driving down Colonial, as the electricity was out at my regular barber. The atmosphere in there was very hometown-esque and reminded me of my childhood. Staff is friendly and courteous. This place is perfect if you are looking for a basic haircut, however, do not expect any form of quality here if you need your hair styled (especially for modern hair styles). The haircut was rushed, and the lines/edges were flawed. I had to fix them myself at home. They (who I assume was Tommy) used CLIPPERS for the edge, no sign of a blade anywhere. My beard line was totally messed up as well. As for service, you have to point out every little detail to them, as they don't ask for things (ie if you want rounded or square edges, hair gel, etc) like other barbers do. One other thing that I noticed, they don't use hairdryers/blowers. Like I said, this barber shop is absolutely perfect for quick trims and basic cuts, but do not expect any decent quality cuts for styled hair. read more

Today was my first time going to Yates Barber Shop. I had heard from several friends that Tommy Upton was the best barber in town so I figured I'd give him a try. Wow! I am so happy I took their advice. Tommy was super friendly and very professional. He told me he started cutting hair 50 years ago on McCoy Air Base before it became Baldwin Park. I told him exactly how I liked my hair to look and he cut it perfectly. He's so gentle it almost put me to sleep. I loved the fact that his hair trimmers are hooked up to a vacuum system. When he was done cutting my hair I didn't have a single hair hanging off of me. I was happy I didn't have to run home and take a shower. Wanted a change in style (back to a flattop after several years), and I got it. I'm totally pleased with the overall cut I received, but I'm not sure I'll be returning, and hesitant to recommend to others. I was not in a rush to be anywhere, so I had extra patience in dealing with their rather lousy (aka non-existent) process of managing arriving customers. How about a simple paper & pen, where you write your name and indicate if you are waiting on a particular stylist?? Their website has a online/e-mail process to make an appointment, but there was no response to either of two messages sent. I called in the morning and was advised the owner may or may not be in later that day, so I could either call back later, or come in and take my chances . . but that there was another stylist who could do that cut as well. That's odd, but . . . OK Without a proper check-in process, I was apparently not on their radar despite sitting a few feet in front of the stylist I'd spoken to on the phone. This place is terrible if you are not getting a basic cut. It's cheap and it has lot of history. the oldest barbershop in Orlando. However, in terms of barbers I am used to in south Florida. This place is mediocre at best. This is somewhere my dad would go to get a basic cut. I asked the guy to shape me up, complete fail he used a trimmer. Do a fade? Complete failure as well. I would not let this guy cut my hair or beard ever again. I went in cos my regular wasn't available. This guy lacks attention to detail. I was left with a patchy job and crooked lines all over. This was the absolute worst experience I have undergone. PLEASE DON'T GIVE THIS GUY BUSINESS. First the place and the owner REEK of cigarettes. Disgusting. I came in with long beautiful hair, asked for a simple trim. He said he would cut off 2 inches. He had me turned around, I should've been watching the whole time. To my dismay, when I turned around, 7-8 inches were cut off my hair. He then goes on to not believe how long my hair was. The owner is delusional and not fit to be cutting hair. He should retire. I'm not from the area and needed a cut really bad (I tried to cut my own hair and messed up). I read on yelp that this was the place to go. And boy were they right. I walked in and was immediately helped. I sat in the chair told the very nice hairstylist what I wanted and BAM. Done. She was gentle and we kept a nice conversation throughout the cut. literally took 15 minutes. Might have even been 10 minutes, it was so quick. The price was very reasonable too. read more

I had a faux hawk and didn't get a haircut for roughly 5 months for no reason in particular so it was really long. One day I found a hair style I really liked so I knew I had to go somewhere that wasn't going to mess up because it was going to be a one shot chance and I didn't want to grow it out again. I looked at every place I could find on google and I'm from UCF. Finally I found Yates with great reviews and great prices. I gave it a shot and it was the best decision I've made in quite some time. I walked in and showed Mr. Upton a picture of exactly what I wanted and almost as if it wasn't even a challenge he gave me back my phone. Somewhere along the road of life, I lost my mind and acquiesced to my wife's suggestion to try getting my hair cut at her hair salon. She explained that hair dressers had a better handle on cutting hair and that my haircut would be much better, etc. if I stopped going to a barber and went to her salon. As fate would have it, my local barber retired so I was looking for place. I eventually got used to the women with aluminum foil in their hair, thumbing through Vogue and Good Housekeeping....since guy's magazines aren't exactly a fixture in salons. Last July, I went in for my monthly/6wks haircut and was placed with a young lady who didn't quite comprehend the term "take about 1/2" off. Instead, she grabbed a large hunk of hair and clipped about 2 inches...saying that my cut would be trendy. I had to let her finish....or go out looking like a baby bird and afterward, let the owner know that I had just received the worst haircut of my life (except in the Army). After my hair grew back out...about 5 months, I decided to find a barber shop where they have guy's magazines, barber chairs, barbers, Pinaud after shave, and not the first piece of aluminum foil around. I recalled that my Dad used to go to Yates so I decided to give it a try. A nice young lady named Pam, took care of me. She's been cutting for 10 years or so and asked me what I wanted...which was "about 1/2 off". She explained that she may have to use a razor to tame my cowlick and proceeded to cut. 20 minutes later, I had a great haircut that was as good or better than the "salon cuts" that I'd had over the years. Her price was $13.00 for a scissor cut...the exact same scissor cut that I'd been paying $30 for. Yates is great shop with a great staff and I intend to be a long term customer. read more
