I had really high hopes for this place. It's listed first when you search for breakfast in Hammond. They have a wide variety on the menu. They have some Mexican options which I love. I got the veggie burrito and added sausage. Our food came out very fast. I would say under 10 minutes. My burrito was okay. It fell apart and I ended up eating it with a fork and knife. The potatoes weren't as flavorful as I hoped. The prices were beyond reasonable. I didn't notice much cheese or sausage. It took 30 minutes after we were done eating to try to leave. Where you pay for your food, is also right by the door where people are coming in to be seated. They definitely need a better set up for this. It took 20 minutes to get our check and at least another 10 to get paid. Maybe I would go back and try it on a less busy day. read more

The food is great. It's almost like American breakfast with creole and Latin flair. I can say for SURE the shrimp and grits are worth a try. I've had that dish a bunch of times in different states but I've never had it quite like they prepared it here--with minced garlic and chilies. Add a little Tabasco for a vinegary kick and it's a brunch must have. My cousin got the traditional Mexican breakfast with corn tortillas (she always gets this) and enjoyed it as usual. It had beans, chorizo, and avocado and was a huge portion. I really wasn't expecting the pancakes to taste as good as they did but mine were cooked to perfection and basically melted in your mouth. I honestly didn't need syrup but it's a habit at this point. I took off a star because their service needs some work. I'm sure they mean well, but they need more staff. It took way too long for simple tasks like paying and getting my bill. I waited so long for someone to take my money that I had to just walk up front to the register. A really warm, vibrant, friendly restaurant serving great breakfasts fast. I'm serious. Even when the place is full on a Saturday morning, minutes after you order your burrito or migas or fried eggs will slide onto your table like a runner stealing second base. The reviews were prettygood so we stopped in on our way through town. The experience was less than satisfactory. It's a cute place on the outside. Inside dated but ample seating. Menu was pretty big, lots of choices. Seated quickly and server came promptly to take our order. The food was so bland. I got the breakfast burrito, it fell completely apart and what I did eat of it lacked flavor or even a sprinkle of salt. Everything was very basic and could tell itwas pre cooked. Bathroom left a lot to be desired. Dark and hand dryer didn't work, no towels either so prepare to walk out with wet hands. At 10am that trash was full. I could see dirty diapers spilling out. The eggs were good but the chorizo and black beans were not even warm. The chorizo had no flavor at all. My husband ordered a crawfish omelet. It was barely warm though the omelette was dark from over cooking. The crawfish had no flavor. I would have requested my food be heated but did not see our server until she brought the check. My 1st( and last ) time here. I was excited to try it. We walked in and ,admittedly, it was a full house. However, after waiting and watching the staff come to the register for at least 5 min, there was no acknowledgement of my husbands and my presence. Zero, zilch, nada. No eye contact to say Hello we see you, or verbalizing we'll be right with you. Finally we were lead to a seat... at a dirty table... with literal butter on the menus. I tried to catch the servers attention, finally getting up and walking over to explain the melted butter menu is now on me and the table. She takes the menu and wipes the table down. Asked what we'd like to drink. My husband asks for coffee. It arrives in a mug with red lipstick on the rim. My husband brings it to the servers attention and she replaces it with a fresher mug. After an extended wait for the "Yellow Bird " special it arrives cold. Congealed potatoes, hardened pancakes with matching hardened sausage patties. The eggs were hot. Customer service wasn't good at all and the food wasn't much better. My wife and I visited this place and waited approximately 10 minutes even before being acknowledged despite a person being at the front counter and the waiting staff passing by us several times. Once we finally got seated, we waited another 15 minutes for a glass of water and a menu. I normally give grace when a place is busy but not this time. Finally, after an hour, the food came out cold and our waitress never came back to check on us. I found it amazing how quickly they were available to to take our money. I'm not 100% sure it's freshly pressed or what but it's really good! I always get the same (Yellow Bird Breakfast) and it consists of two eggs, a pancake, grilled potatoes and your choice of meat. I give a lot of grace during covid, but really. Tables weren't bussed to start. People sat themselves. No menus. Took 20 min to get coffee. Then, our order never came. Literally everyone else was done eating and we didn't have scrambled eggs after 45 minutes. Waitress says cooks lost our ticket ( she should have taken responsibility rather than blame. Loved this place, came in to eat and was seated. We were in a booth because I consider that safer than being seated at tables in center of room. Next thing I know we're we're three booths in a row filled. I was like amazed. I though the virus was still here and social distancing was supposed to be enforced. Apparently not here. This place had been on my local diners bucket list of places to hit for a while. I have heard lots of great things and they've been around for a long time. So when we got the chance to go, I was excited to try it out. The food was good. Nothing over the top but was good. I was mostly let down by the service. When we arrived, the restaurant was at about 1/2-2/3 capacity with no wait. It was Saturday morning, so I expected to be waiting when I got there. We were seated immediately, but that's where the whole process came to a screeching halt. Took at least 15 minutes to get our drink order, then another 15-20 to take our food order after the drinks arrived. Not sure what the deal was because there was ample staff around for the amount of customers being served. Then our food order wasn't correct, but no one ever came by to check on us after the food was brought out. The chef brought out the food so he went back to the kitchen, and we never saw our waitress again until I finally was able to flag her down to get our check. She removed the undelivered items from the bill, and we closed out our bill. By the time we left, there was a line out the door of waiting customers. I feel like with a speedier service and better attentiveness to the current customers, there would be faster turnovers and less wait for others. I will definitely go back again for another try because the food was good, and everyone has a bad day. However, if the second round is anything like the first, that will be my last time eating there. It was really probably the worst table service I've had in the last 10 years. I don't say this to bash the place. I just want management to be able to know that there are issues. Hopefully they can get them turned around before it drives away business. Give them a try and judge for yourself. The food is good and that's what you're paying for anyway. As a huge fan of their sister restaurant, La Caretta, I was expecting the same quality of food here...and I got it! I've been to this place several times and with the exception of a lukewarm Eggs Benedict a couple times ago (during a slow period in the middle of the day), it has been perfect. I have never had a problem with the service as another review said, it's always been quick and with a smile. The last time I visited they had even added some new dishes to go along with their Mexican/American breakfast fare including shrimp and grits (which was DELICIOUS). This is a great place to grab some breakfast in downtown Hammond. I love that it isn't a chain and the portions are generous and the quality very good. Our group had mostly specials, so it is hard to comment on the regular menu, but the food we had was all amazing. I got the ropa vieja (a traditional Cuban dish) and the meat was well spiced and tender. It was served with all the great sides, including the sweet plantains. So yummy! In our group we also got an omlette, which was very good, but the plate that stole the show was the special burrito. It looked to have similar shredded beef as the ropa vieja and was a very big serving. Everyone was impressed. Definitely my place for breakfast when I go back to Hammond! read more
