The owners are very friendly and helpful, recommending a great casual, Italian restaurant in the area, Bark's Grill, where they make their own sauces and dressings. The Brick House adds all those little details that make your stay memorable; cookies in the dining room, holiday decorations, a game room, fridge, microwave, bottles of water, etc. My BF and I stayed in the Grape Room of this house that was built in the 1800s. The rooms are decorated in antiques and rich colors which I can really appreciate coming from stark white apartment city living. The room had a comfortable king-sized bed, an electric fireplace and private bath. I assume because it was the Grape Room, we also found a couple cans of grape juice in the room and a free mug to take if you choose to w the name of the B&B on it. The BF was a big fan of the soft towels. The fresh coffee was ready in the morning by 7 and breakfast by 8:30. You won't leave hungry with eggs, bacon, fruit, pastries, juice, and homemade pound cake. The best add-on to the stay is the opportunity to use the 2 infrared dry saunas. They provide white fluffy robes for their guests to wear in them. If you are stopping by the wineries in the area, 21 Brix is only about 4 miles down the road and their Cabernet is more than worth a stop.

No detail goes unnoticed in the room, the towels are soft and match the floor rugs beautifully. Robes are available for guests and plenty of outlet space for charging is around the room. A note to visitors: the shared refrigerator for guests is only a mini-fridge, so there isn't much storage space. We'd suggest planning ahead and bringing a cooler for any larger items you wanted to store - or calling ahead to see about options. When we wanted to chill champagne, Lesley was wonderful to assist us with an ice bucket and two glasses! I highly recommend a trip here - friendly, relaxing, and so comfortable!

The Inn is right in the heart of the village, with nice restaurants north and south on Elmwood. Intermixed are interesting shops and boutiques, cafes, and even a cool grocery store. A mile south is Allen Street and all its wares; a mile north is Buffalo State and the art museum. Hop on a one of those rent-by-the-hour bikes, and Canalside and downtown is a quick pedal away. Even more, there is easy access to the freeway that gets you to Niagara Falls quickly (I suggest Whirlpool State Park for an alternative trip; the hike to the bottom of the gorge is gorgeous). The Inn itself is clean, interestingly decorated and comfortable. The room we stayed in was large ... and my wife took advantage of the large bathtub to soak away a late evening while enjoying a glass of wine. There are snacks, toiletries, water and other small touches that made the stay very enjoyable. What isn't mentioned on the Inn's website prominently is the breakfast: they are delicious. The owner has worked in the restaurant industry as a chef, and it shows. There is a wide selection of healthy options (such as fruit, granola, yogurt) along with hearty meals, pastries, cheese, sausage, etc. And, perhaps most importantly, the coffee was great. One last thing: take advantage of the porch. There is an outdoor sitting area off the communal living room that provides a great place for enjoying coffee and a newspaper in the morning, and a delicious nightcap (perhaps with some Buffalo-style pizza) in the late evening. The people watching from the porch is also great (Elmwood Avenue is pedestrian-heavy throughout the day and evening). Anyway ... if you enjoy culture, food, people-watching, access and beautiful neighborhoods, you'll love this place.

It is one absolutely gorgeous place. We stayed at Tropical room and it is so lovely and cozy. The house itself is so well decorated and just beautifully furnished that my impression was speechless. Plus a free breakfast which is a restaurant type three course meal. OMG I was so impressed especially because being a vegan not everyone would accommodate, but the hostess emailed us in advance to check on that information and cooked us beautiful tasty vegan breakfasts. I'm already thinking of coming back just for that :) Also Judith is very lovely lady who is very knowledgable about the area and things to do. Helpful in every way. Judith appeared within moments to greet us warmly and show us our room. We booked at the last minute, so the first night we stayed in the Highlander room, and the second night we were in the Asian room. Both rooms were spacious, spotless, and clearly decorated with care. Judith takes care of all the little details, like having cookies, peanuts, cold drinks and tea available at all times. She even brought us some lovely port to sip while relaxing on the screened-in porch in the evening. So delightful! Judith really goes all out at breakfast, which always includes a beautifully set table complete with candles, a first course of free trade coffee or tea, juice, baked goods, fresh fruit, yogurt, and homemade granola. The main event can be anything from goat cheese frittata to Eggs Benedict on homemade savoury waffles (my sweetheart loved these!). Her eggs come from a local free range farm that she has visited personally, and she can cheerfully accommodate dietary restrictions like vegan or gluten free (great news for me!). Port Colborne is a lovely, friendly little town, and Judith and her home are so warm and welcoming.....we can't wait to return in the winter to see just how cozy Talwood Manor can get.

We're no strangers to B&Bs - it's our favourite mode of weekend getaway, and when we booked a room…read morelast minute on a long-weekend, we didn't really know what to expect. We even drove right past it the first time - when they say it used to be a church, they aren't kidding. Marienthal itself is three different pieces - the church is absolutely beautiful, and has been converted into a large reception hall. Behind the church is a beautiful little patio with a fireplace where we were able to have breakfast the next day. The parsonage next door was renovated into a number of guest rooms - the room we were originally in was the smallest of them, but had a beautiful attached bathroom, TV and was still plenty of room for two people. Lastly, there was a building (which I believed housed nuns originally), that has been converted into a bit of a retreat centre. There were a half-dozen or so double rooms with a full kitchen upstairs, and a large meeting area downstairs with another great kitchen, big screen TV with satellite, and lots of couches. We even had access to a great little jacuzzi in the back. This place is an absolute gem in the middle of nowhere. There's a little grill next door if you want to grab some food, but otherwise there is almost nothing in the immediate vicinity. You can drive about half an hour if you're looking for things to do, but if you really want to just get away in peace and quiet, where you know you won't be disturbed, this is absolutely the place to do it. Location and buildings aside, the hosts are really what makes this place special. Both of them go way out of their way to be accommodating. Louise's breakfast was very likely the best breakfast I've ever had in my life. Homemade apple turnovers, local sausages, and the fluffiest, cottage-cheese pancakes that still make my mouth water. And Vinnie is a very entertaining fellow to talk to - he has absolutely no shortage of hilarious stories to tell. The two of them were great to have as hosts. The next time we need a quiet getaway, there's zero doubt about where we'll end up.
