We were not offered drinks and our appetizers arrived with out flat ware or plates. It wasn't super busy but they were obviously understaffed. Can we devote an entire paragraph to the bathroom? Wow... I'm shocked they are allowed to serve food in a place where the bathroom is so repulsive. You could smell (and see) urine everywhere. Ordered: Lamb Fahsah Lamb Haneeth w rice (comes with lamb soup) Yemeni Bread Lamb Fasah It arrived bubbling and boiling in the pot. The meat was tender and took on the flavor of the broth, which had a tomato base and was rich in spices-but also very salty. I would recommend getting the Yemeni bread on the side to dip into the soup to cut the saltiness. Lamb Haneeth The meat was literally falling off the bone as you picked it up, so you know it was super tender. I preferred this dish over the Fasah due to just the experience of chewing the tender meat, but overall the flavor was very similar. The optional rice did a good job to cut the saltiness well. Yemeni Bread I think this dish simply enhanced everything we ate at the table. We dipped it in the Fasah and the lamb soup, and wrapped it around the Lamb Haneeth. It also came with 2 sauces which were simply amazing. One was a freshly diced tomato mixed with a very spicy paste, and the other was a sort of tart garlic sauce (Toum I think?). The sauces brought a very nice balance to everything as they were light, fresh, and bright, as the other dishes were heavy, full of spice, and fatty. Overall, the portions, price, and flavor pushes this restaurant to five stars. Don't come in expecting a fancy meal, but rather a homey, family owned restaurant that serves giant portions for a great price. read more

I made it here on the way home finally. I ordered Yemen smoothie, it's the same as their mango smoothie. I ordered a chicken fahsa soup with a side of large Yemen bread (flat large thin bread; $1 extra), a chicken gallaba on top of hummus. I also ordered the Labneh and a large tabouli. My colleague raves about this place, let's see if he is right or has lost his sense of taste. Some of their breakfast items sound yummy and comforting for breakfast some time. The smoothie is topped with Vimto, a fruit cordial. The smoothie is creamy and decent hint of mango and nice finish with the Vimto. The chicken gallaba tastes like a stew, tastes okay, could use a bit more flavors or even spice to make it better for me. The hummus is also okay. The chicken fahsa tastes really good, it's rich in flavor and warm like a stew. Comfort food for sure. It's good stuff and I was glad I had ordered it in the end. The Labneh is fresh and creamy and it's such a refreshing taste to have it from a restaurant than to use the tub of Labneh from the store and make it at home. It has such a subtle hint of garlic and mint, not very notable and tastes mostly yogurt and not much else. The tabouli tastes good, fresh and crunchy. First and foremost- going off of taste alone, the food here is 5 stars. You won't have to worry about the quality of your food at Yemen Cafe. Every dish we tried was delicious and the portion sizes were generous. However, I wouldn't say this is your typical dine in experience at a restaurant. You'll have to flag down staff and you seat yourself. Grab your own drinks as well. The Service is so so but I give the benefit of the doubt with so many places being understaffed at the moment. The staff is Kind, no issues there, Just spread a bit thin. Limited parking, but parallel street parking is located across the road. That being said id definitely return! Unfortunately by the time we came here for a late lunch, it was already our third meal of the day, and so our appetites were limited. Plus, for $7, I never expected to get quite this large a portion of food. Nonetheless, the fassolia with eggs was on point. I ordered the dry version (there's another one with gravy). It is essentially a white bean egg mash/stir fry with a texture reminiscent of anda bhurji. The accompanying thin, partially crispy bread was the perfect vehicle for it. Visited Yemen cafe while traveling to meet friends. We went around 4, typically you would need to find street parking. The food overall was authentic in terms of flavors, wouldn't say it's the right place if you are looking for ambience. The bread was soft and highlight of the meal. Pairing it with soup or meat was divine! The rice and meat was a tasty combo though some of the pieces of meat had way too much fat and didn't hold any meat. Was confused with the serving. Yemen Cafe is amazing. Get the Lamb Fahsah; it's a delicious lamb soup. Also, get a lot of the fresh naan. It's so worth it. Dip that into there garlic sauce and your mouth will water for more. Upon entering I was slightly thrown off as I wasn't greeted right away and thus wasn't sure if I had to go up to order or if I sat down first. I asked one of the staff and they said I could sit anywhere. He then pulled out one of the tables to separate it from the others and had me sit there. I ordered the Fattah with Dates and Honey, and the Fahsah with Lamb. While the food took a while to arrive, both dishes were excellent. The lamb was so tender and went very well with the 'soup' base. I was given a large piece of a naan-like bread that I used to spoon the lamb and base and it was excellent. It was, however, very temperature hot and I mildly burned the roof of my mouth. The Fattah was also very good and the cream with honey and dates was tasty yet not overly sweet. I should add that my server was very friendly and initially thought I was Yemeni and thus first spoke to me in Arabic. I then practiced my horribly broken Arabic and he was very encouraging. Also, I loved the murals/pictures on the wall of the various sites in Yemen that made me really want to travel there. Now for the constructive criticism. Since the place was very busy, even near 12am (they close at 1am), it was hard to keep it clean. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't super dirty, but the garbage bins were filled to the brim, and the floors by where people ate were not always fully cleaned. I say this delicately because the staff were extremely hardworking, all while being friendly, and the staff alone would get 5 stars easy. As I noted earlier, the food took a while, but again, the staff were very busy. I don't recall my table being wiped down. The server did a very nice job being attentive to me and separating my table but just didn't wipe it down. It was reasonably clean so not the end of the world. In summary, this place is very capable of a 5 star rating. For me, here is what I'd like to see (may or may not be feasible). Add an extra person for clean-up to keep the eating area fully presentable (again wasn't bad but could be improved). Make wiping the table off second nature to servers (didn't break my experience but this does need to be done). Have servers give a heads up about food (or dish) temperature if very hot. Again, these are all constructive. I enjoyed my dining experience and two of the more important items to me, which are food quality and taste, and friendliness of staff, were excellent. read more

What a lovely treasure in Hamtramck! This location moved across the street 3 months ago and has a bigger and nicer interior. The service is casual but quick and the staff are very friendly to those who have questions about the cuisine. We ordered the lamb soup, which was slightly disappointing because there was no lamb. It was lemony and not bad for $1.50, though. We then got the fahsah and the agadah. The faradah arrives in a piping hot bowl with egg and optional meat like Lamb or chicken. It says soup but it's more like a casserole consistency. The agadah was by far the best part of the meal. Incredibly flavored vegetables, big pieces of roasted Lamb and a lot for 2 people. Their large bread is huge and crispy. Will definitely return to try more dishes. Don't forget to help yourself to the free and delicious cardamom tea near the cashier! read more
