We came at the recommendation of a friend who said it's their favorite Mexican restaurant, we will no longer listen to him for restaurant recommendations. The hostess seemed very nice while we ordered food to go. We picked a combo meal with a beef burrito, chicken flauta, guacamole tostada, and rice and beans. The hostess kept raving about the ground beef in the burrito and how they make it themselves. The restaurant itself is busy and the atmosphere is nice. It's clean and well kept. The food is not what I'm used to for Mexican, there are many more authentic places around. The beef burrito was basically a small ground beef enchilada, the chicken flauta was big chunk of stringy chicken that was not well put together. Overall, the food was lazy and tasted like someone tried to make Mexican food, but had never tried Mexican food before. Underwhelming to say the least. read more

Exceptional spot for lunch a d a lunch time chat!! Downtown Lisle is off the beaten path (not really) and this is fabulous spot for lunch. Not crowded, but busy enough, on a Friday afternoon. I'd been wanting to check out this place for years and today was the day (thanks to Lisle Restaurant Week). I wish I could say I was impressed. I did enjoy my Coconut Shrimp but everything else we ordered seemed a little bland. I had the combo with Carne Asada. It was well cooked but lacked seasoning. The tableside guacamole was missing something. My husband loved his veggie-mango fajitas--nice combination. The patio seating was pleasant. Overall, I was not impressed. Service felt very rushed, despite the restaurant being mostly empty. The server came back multiple times within a few minutes to see if we were ready to order, which made me feel stressed/pressured to order immediately. As for the food, it was good, but since I had heard really good things about this place, I expected more. It did taste good, however it wasn't my favorite tacos ever. This is a cute spot with great food in downtown lisle, and a great spot for dinner before taking a little walk downtown. Our waiter was so nice and kept an eye on us all night, anticipating our needs early. The one miss for me was the tableside guac. It wasn't made tableside, and while it seemed fresh enough, it was just okay and nothing to write home about. I don't dine in Lisle that often but this was my third visit to this place since it opened. The first time, which was a long time ago, the food was very good. A few years later I felt everything had taken a step back a bit. Still good enough to come back but obviously we weren't in a hurry. Now I think the have just given up. Service was indifferent at best. Salsa was on the bland side. Not offensive but leaving you wanting it to have a little more flavor. We had the queso fundido Chorizo was by far the best thing we had. Really good flavor and got our hopes up for the entrees. My wife had the shrimp enchiladas. Literally grilled shrimp in a tortilla. No filler whatsoever and the shrimp tasted off. The tortillas sat in a salsa verde with some cheese on top but none of it worked. I had flautas pollo. These were fine nothing stood out one way or the other. The biggest disappointment were the margaritas. The house margaritas are made with Montezuma Tequila and Daily's margarita mix and they charge $12 for this! Highway robbery. These are the ingredients for a margarita at a dive bar not a Mexican restaurant. We figured if we upgraded our liquor we would get a nice hand shaken margarita with fresh ingredients. WRONG! We just ended up ruining good tequila for what turned out to be one of the worst margaritas we've ever had. They should be ashamed of themselves. They did remove the drinks from our bill after we requested. I've been in the restaurant industry for 40 years so I'm sensitive to sending items back and I can't ever remember sending a cocktail back, ever. Fresh lime juice is the least you should be doing for a $12 house margarita. You seriously need to get back to your roots of what made you successful in the first place. What you are currently doing is not working. read more

Came in again today and tried the Pozole Verde de Pollo and Allende Combo. They were both pretty decent, definitely recommend adding the side accoutrements to the pozole to add some extra flavor. read more

6:00 pm reservations on a Saturday night. Seated right on time. Great outdoor seating area, but we chose to sit inside. We were sat directly under an air conditioning vent, which blasted cold air directly on to our table. This was not ideal, but we all just put on our sweatshirts/jackets. I suppose we could have asked to be moved, but I hate making a scene of any kind in a restaurant. Service was very good. Ara was very pleasant, kept our drinks refilled, checked back, cleared plates immediately. She did seem a little put off when I requested more chips and salsa, but she did bring them promptly, Speaking of chips and salsa, they are complimentary, and were delivered as soon as we sat down. The chips were warm, but nothing special. The salsa , on the other hand, was amazing! Not spicy at all, but super fresh...full of flavor...tomatoes tasted like they had just been picked fresh from the garden. Amazing! Food came lightening fast, and was possibly the best Mexican food I've had. Portions were generous. I had a burrito ranchero with grilled chicken. Tons of moist grilled chicken, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, sour cream, topped with their salsa and melted cheese. All the cold ingredients brought down the temperature of the burrito, but this is pretty common with burritos. Hubby had steak tacos. Three flour tortillas packed with tender steak, and the usual taco toppings. Got a big thumbs up, but again food was not super hot. Our friends had a chimichanga, and a combination plate. Both were very pleased with their food. Best compliment I can give is between the four of us, there wasn't a single bite left on anyone's plate. Staff was very friendly. Great greeting, and a round of thank yous and goodbyes when we left. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Mandatory 20% tip? The guy never came to our table. I wanted to order more drinks but he never came. Dessert? We had to flag him down multiple times. Walked away before we were done ordering. Food was ok. Drinks were ok. We felt like we were inconveniencing him trying to eat. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. read more

This is our second time at Yerbabuena. Our first time was last Fall and we were less impressed with the restaurant (maybe we ordered the wrong dish?) but this time last weekend was great. I got the jalapeno margarita and it was quite good - with a nice kick of spice. I loved the variety of margaritas they had. The chips and salsa was good - salsa more pico de gallo w/ a kick vs a salsa (in my eyes). For entrees (which came out to us very quickly - and still hot!) - we got the Salmon Tequila Diablo and Jalapeno Mango Shrimp. Both dishes were really good and had a nice spiciness to them. I would recommend them both. Great outside patio (and even upstairs deck) - that made the experience even better. read more

An excellent little high end Mexican style place in downtown Lisle. I highly recommend it. Not all dishes are true Mexican style, the salsa and enchilada are basically Tex-Mex but the tampiquena was the real deal. Nothing is super spicy, if you're looking for that, you might want to bring a bottle of hot sauce. Drinks are potent and service is good. I would definitely eat here again! read more

The couple of times that I have been here, I've concluded that their margaritas are not to be taken lightly ;) The first time I've tried Yerbabuena, we were seated on the second floor dining area. The service was friendly and efficient. The place was neat and the vibe was lively. I liked the STEAK FAJITAS that I ordered. There was a lot of meat and the dish was cooked well. I also tried the CHICKEN TEQUILA DIABLO. That dish was spicy, and it was delicious. The second visit was with a group of 6, on a Saturday night and we were seated on the first floor dining area. I had STEAK TACOS-CHUY STYLE. One order came with 3 pieces and they were good sized tacos. The steak was seasoned and cooked well again. The rice and beans that came with the tacos were also tasty. My friends were satisfied with their dishes and drinks. The service was pretty slow though. Maybe because it was a busy night. Overall, I liked the variety of food on the menu. I'll try something else besides a steak dish next time. The bathrooms were clean and the place was fun for a date night or group gathering. Til next time! P.S. Yerbabuena is so cute and really aesthetic. The inside is really neat and well put together. The outdoor patio is gorgeous as well and looks out over Main Street, I would definitely enjoy a margarita out there in the summer. The food was subpar. The soup we had was really flavorful. The elotes had great flavor but the portion size was extremely small. The salmon that our waiter recommended to us was just okay. I'm not sure if I would try the food again the service was really nice and fast. They were really nice to talk to. The owner of the restaurant even talked to us for a while and gave us free shots of tequila which was really nice. read more

Not sure who the 1 and 2 star people are, but it's too bad you didn't have the experience you wished. Perhaps it's just your nature to review like this? I have now lived in Austin, Texas for ten years. When I left Lisle, we had been visiting Yerbabuena for 17 years, always delighted with the service and the wonderful food. Yerba is authentic and creative, bringing the flavors of Central Mexico to Lisle. I have returned to Yerba on many occasions the last ten years and it never disappoints. After ten years in Austin, where Mexican cuisine is a staple, I still say that Yerbabuena is the best Mexican culinary experience I have had. Hats off to Miguel and the team. read more

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Lisle, Illinois. The menu is very well represented in Mexican cuisine. Though it's food preparation is above your standard home style cooking often served at Mexican restaurants ( which is great in my opinion and experience) because the chef / owner approach's the food and presentation upscale wise. Portions fit the presentation versus quantity. Awesome creative salsa selections. The house salsa is always fresh and delicious, though free of fire. Great service and friendly ambiance. The ambiance was fine, nothing great, the server expressed zero interest in assisting with recommendations, we told him it was our first time there looking for suggestions and he replied "there are 80 items on the menu" when asking about margaritas offered zero assistance just telling us the house tequila "is not good" he rushed us, it was a total turn off. My shrimp tacos had no lie, 2 pieces of small shrimp in each, an absolute bust, would never go back or recommend. The mexican pizza appetizer is so good and we have been going here for years! One of my favorite restaurants!

The service was great. The manager gave us a complimentary flight of salsa. Unfortunately, the food and drinks were just not good at all. The ambiance was nice. But just the food was not tasty at all. My friends complained about the "shredded" chicken being just clumps of chicken with little to no flavor. I got the pina al pastor tacos and they were mushy and frankly the flavor was vile. The drinks were just a syrupy mix. No authenticity. Dissatisfied. read more

I've been coming to Yerbabueno for many years and consider the food to some of the best Mexican in the area - and last night was no exception. That said, the reception we received last night was extremely poor. My dinner partner and I arrived at 8:30 pm and while she waited at the door while I went back to the car for a mask, the hostess stepped outside and told my date, ..."Hi, you know we close at 9:00, right?" - which I wasn't aware of until later. When we walked in, she was visibly annoyed and when she sat us at a table, her comment was, "just so you know, the kitchen has already started cleaning up...". Thought it was the most unwelcome, rude and insulting level of service - and I don't know this to be true, but she carried herself as perhaps one of the owners or manager? For what it's worth, we already knew that they were closing shortly and had every intention of hurrying through dinner - but the reception was just so negative, it has left a very bad taste on the whole experience - despite the food being excellent as usual. read more

My margarita was watered down and tasted like there wasn't alcohol in it. My steak was good my husband's food was gross. We started with drinks out doors while waiting for the rest of our family to arrive! The staff treats you like family! Poor customer service. It was lunch time - I had ordered a tacos - you can pick what style you want. The waiter in a hurry gave me the options which I wasn't familiar with. Again he repeated them, seeming to be in a rush. No explanation of what each one was. After I made my decision, I found I accidentally chose the don chuy which had grilled onions. Less than 5 min after I placed the order I waved down the waiter, I actually wanted the tapatio, raw onions. He went back to change the order and came back saying sorry, it's already made. I hadn't received the actual plate yet, couldn't they make me another one to make me happy? I asked if I can change it, no sorry. I couldn't believe it... It didn't seem like enough time had even passed to cook the food! Waiter was very short. I paid 18 dollars knowing I wasn't going to like it. Very disappointed. Tacos came out soggy. This a go to place for us when we're by my mom. As always the food was very good. They seem to have revamped the menu slightly. Seems more streamlined. They do have all our favorites still. I did find out They won't do tacos a la carte anymore though which is a bummer. I did the Yerbabuena combo. Taco, enchilada and tostada. All were very delicious. I've eaten lunch here many times and came for dinner tonight for the first time. I have the chicken enchiladas and mole sauce. The mole sauce was particularly great. The restaurant starts by serving everyone complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa's pretty mild but enjoyable. My kiddo enjoyed fried ice cream for the first time which was a great treat. Nice to eat outside. I've had their seasonal menu items which are usually particularly great especially squash dishes. read more
