Fish, shrimp, and steak tacos
Joy C.

I only had a glass of margarita the first time I tried Tapatio. The place was clean and empty on a Thursday evening. The service was friendly when the server took our drink orders. We decided to come back about a couple of weeks later to try their food. There was one other table occupied with one customer dining in. On this visit, I've tried: FISH, SHRIMP, STEAK tacos- all of the proteins were fine, nothing really stood out. The tacos overall, were somehow disappointing. STEAK FAJITAS- I did not expect this dish to be soggy and bland. The steak was mixed and overcooked with the veggies. The chips and salsa were good. The drinks were decent. The service on the second visit was close to none existent. I'm not sure I'd come back. I wasn't too happy with the food and the service needs a lot of work and consistency.

Even though this establishment JUST opened, they brought their "A" game. For dinner, we had an appetizer, 2 entrees, a soda & water and got out for under $50. Their guacamole is to die for. I had a shrimp dish that was very good. Parking could be an issue, depending on when you arrive. Stay away during commuter hours because they are located directly south of the Westmont train station.

You have a choice of queso or guac as a starter, both are small. Chips and salsa are also gratis. After that you have a choice of two items from a list of about 8 or 9 items. I had the chicken quesadilla and tostada. Upgrade to add bean and rice for a buck. My colleagues fish taco wasn't worth the extra $2 according to her. I thought everything was fresh and delicious. More lunch than both of us needed, I'd pass on the rice/beans in the future. Service was good. Attentive but everything was her favorite on the menu, not very helpful. Seating in indoors or out. They have TVs for the World Cup and a full bar. Highly recommend for lunch and we will be back.

My server was pretty slow and seemed distracted, sometimes gone for 20 minutes at a time. I basically had to lock eyes with him just to get his attention. He was a younger guy, so hopefully he tightens that up. Also, if someone notes in their reservation that they're bringing a baby and a car seat, it would make more sense to seat them at a booth instead of in the middle of the restaurant, especially when booths are open. Overall, I'd say it was about a 7/10 experience.

I've learned that ordering "just enough" at Taco Maya is a rookie mistake. Every plate that comes…read moreout looks like it was intended for a family of four, and somehow you still find yourself trying to finish it because it's that good. The guacamole is exactly what you hope fresh guacamole will be, and the queso is dangerously addictive without trying to be over the top. Everything tastes fresh, the portions are almost comically generous, and you never leave wondering if you got your money's worth. The atmosphere somehow pulls off a neat trick. It's lively enough that the place feels full of energy, but it's never so loud that you're shouting across the table. I could carry on a normal conversation without a problem, while the table next to us sounded like they might've been celebrating a quinceañera--and somehow it all just worked. Places like this are why chain restaurants have such a hard time impressing me anymore. Great food, huge portions, friendly staff, and consistently good every time I've been there. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and stop in.

This is meant to be your crazy expensive birthday bash or celebration, not an every day place. We are lucky to have a gem like this in Schaumburg with very busy servers who try their absolute best to give you a flashy service with delicious food. Are you seriously expecting this to be $50 meal for four? No way. There are many places you can get the same thing. Every time I've gone here, I've spent good money that I worked hard for, and have had great memories in the process. If you're expecting a simple Mexican restaurant, this is not your place. This is high end and very busy. Make a reservation, call in advance to make sure it's set. OpenTable is used by many restaurants, so you can't blame this restaurant for OpenTable's mistakes. The Los Tres Huastecos was PHENOMENAL. The Camarones Calavera was really fun to watch, experience, and eat. I don't drink, but my family loved their flashy drinks (the Deseo was their favorite). They made sure my father felt special on his birthday with a sash, a custom menu (which we requested for in advance with our reservation), and most servers took a moment to say happy birthday even when they weren't serving our table!! Chris was a fantastic server who despite being very busy, did a wonderful job with his service. I won't defend a place for no reason; I truly had a wonderful time that deserves its praise. I research everywhere I go, so obviously when my paycheck hasn't cleared, I'm not going here. But you also wouldn't go to Fogo De Chao or Hell's Kitchen and expect it to be as cheap as my burger at a Chili's (which I love as well). (Also for the comments about the guac, I do agree, but I've also seen the same size portion at other chains for the same price. *cough* south of the boarder *cough*)

Once we checked in with the hostess for our reservation we waited ~10 minutes to be seated and quickly greeted by our waiter Guillermo (so sweet and very friendly). We ordered our adult beverages (both very refreshing and tasty especially on a hot summer day) and flautas as an appetizer. The flautas are definitely big enough to share or as an entree. Guillermo provided great food selections and we decided on the quesabirrias and Molcajete. We were both silent for the first 5 minutes because we were enjoying our meal...the flavors were exquisite! Make sure to make a reservation...this was at 5:15 on a Saturday and it was packed! Walk-ins were definitely waiting for a table. Also be prepared that the noise level is a tad loud and the tables are close together.

Unfortunately today, the service was really bad. Liz, was our waitress and consistently showed me attitude, just saying no to things, etc. Just not a good experience at all. I am fine with hearing no, but there's a way to talk when you're hospitality well. On to the food. Red sauce cheese enchilada - good Green sauce cheese echilada - others loved it, but it's too tangy for me Guacamole - fine and better with fresh jalepenos added Veggie Tacos - meh.. probably the worst item of the day Veggie Quesadilla - it was fine to good Based on this trip, I think I would still come back and just hope to not have the same waitress. Btw, the rest of the staff, walking around were very nice and thoughtful, but how much do you really interact with them. So anyway, we'll see how it goes.
