If I could give this place zero stars, I would. The menu looked very promising. The salsa they served tasted like Old El-Paso out of a jar. Taco Bell has more spice in their food than this place. Ordered a pitcher of the Cadillac Margarita, but it tasted more like a Long Island ice tea that was very strong. Did they just add liquor and water? When the waiter came by to check in us, I asked if I could have a small glass of lime juice or lime slices (to cut the liquor in the margarita) and he straight up looked at me and said "No" and walked away. If you are looking for horrible service and white people spiced so-called "Mexican" food, then this is the place for you. read more

First of all the good stuff. Their chips are warm & crispy and the salsa is great with the chips or over your meal. The guacamole was good. I ordered the chicken fajita which came in a rather downsized skillet. The fajita was not as colorful; it was overloaded with onions & green peppers rather than red peppers and they did not have enough chicken. My wife ordered the Alambres which had a much better assortment of chicken, ham & chorizo. We both were not that excited about the whole beans. We arrived at 6:00p on a Saturday night. Waiter was quick to our table to get our drink order. Drinks were served quickly with very little alcohol. We were ready to order because we knew what we wanted, my wife had asked if they serve Paella before we came. We got our Guac in less than 5 minutes. Our entrees arrived in about 10 minutes, I was disappointed because Paella takes at least 45 minutes to cook properly. It was not served in a pan. The rice was not sizzled as it is supposed to be. It's a slow-cook dish. Simply, it wasn't Paella. I did not complain because I was being taken out for my birthday. Entrees were small. We were finished quickly. As each person finished, the waiter came and asked if he could take the dishes. We still had not finished our drinks. The check arrived at our table at about 6:50p. At about 6:55 the waiter came to get the payment, but we hadn't looked at it yet and so we stopped our conversation to pay the bill and he picked it up right away and returned. We signed the bill with a normal tip at about 7pm. The waiter picked it up promptly. At about 7:05, or earlier, the hostess came to ask us to finish up because people were waiting. We had been there an hour and 5 minutes. If you want a fast meal, this might be your place. To be sure you get what you think you are ordering, ask the waiter to describe it or show it to you. During this COVID-19 time, we were looking for a local restaurant that had outdoor seating and decided to give Yerbabuena in downtown Lisle a try. The setup of tables on a wide sidewalk worked nice. It was a late weekday afternoon and we were seated immediately. We started with drinks; my wife had a Yerba Margarita and I had Baja Brewing Mexican IPA. We appreciated the complimentary chips and salsa; the salsa wasn't particularly hot which pleased my wife. For our entrées, my wife ordered the skirt steak fajitas and I had the Yerba carne asada. Lisle's Main Street is trying hard to thrive, and Yerbabuena is a useful presence. A friend and I went to dinner here on a Tuesday night and were pleased with the meal overall. We were treated to chips (fresh, thin, though needing a bit of salt) and salsa, which we chomped through as we decided on our entrees. I ordered the chicken mango paella, which was different from any true paella I have had, where the proteins and veggies are baked on a bed of rice; here, the chicken, mangoes, and peppers sat beside the rice on the plate, with an unnecessary-seeming side of sour cream, salsa and guacamole. Everything tasted good -- the chicken had been grilled with garlic butter, the mangoes were softened, and the leathery pieces of dried pepper added flavor dimensions -- but grease was definitely the word: the butter had pooled under the meat and mangoes, leaving at least a tablespoon of grease sitting on the plate. I had to move my rice so it wouldn't invade. Tasty though everything was, I still ended up feeling like I had a ring of grease around my mouth after I finished eating (though the chicken itself did not seem greasy). My friend had the same issue with her soft ground beef tacos: grease dripped out of the tacos as she ate them. All was forgiven, though, when we got dessert: sopapillas. Unlike many restaurants, where sopapillas are doughy and undercooked, here they were small, thin, crispy, and addictive, laced with honey and cinnamon sugar; a huge plateful was plenty for two and came with dollops of whipped cream (we did not spring for the addition of ice cream). The perfect girls' night out treat. The decor is a blend of adventurous and traditional -- purple walls and metal sconces mixed with photos of Mexico and pictures of Our Lady of Guadalupe; the bathroom floors were tiled with shards of broken pottery and marbles (though it could have used a mopping). Our waitress was very sweet and did a good job of keeping up with our needs. We also witnessed her making the tableside guacamole for another table, which is quite a feat if you are an avocado fan. Overall, Yerbabuena is bueno in my book, though the grease needs to go. read more

I'm a white guy and a connoisseur of Mexican cooking. Go to Mago, best in the state, or stick local to your area. Burrito Parilla or Amigas or if you're lucky, go find a pozoleria which will change your life. But Yerbabuena, just subpar to say the least. Service sucks too. Tried this place out as it is close to our house. I ordered the Don Miguel combo (5 oz Skirt steak and two chicken enchiladas). Steak was excellent but the enchiladas were honestly ok. Food was like warm when brought to the table, not a lot of room to customize items for vegetarians, and overall service was very disappointing. Overpriced food for not great taste or service when dining in. The two hosts that greeted and said bye were nice hence the one star. They tried to be accommodating but our actual server was full of attitude and when asked for certain things would refuse by saying things such as "I already brought a large one to the table so I'll only bring this other salad in addition to it." Yerbabuena is a lovely Mexican restaurant in downtown Lisle. The recipes are "passed down through the family" and I believe it. It seems authentic and is certainly delicious. I like the Chicken Enchilada Suizas-meaning with a tomato salsa and melted cheese. My husband gets the Beef Enchilada Verdes-which is made from tomatillos and is spicier than the suizas sauce. Also the table side guacamole is not only tasty, but is fun to watch as they make it right in front of you. Of course, we always get the house margarita which is great too. read more

We had not been to downtown Lisle in a very long time. I had wanted to try Yerba Buena but I had always looked on Sunday when it's closed. Weds night at 6 and it was busy. Bottom line margarita was way way too sweet, bland and needed a punch. If you like bland and uninteresting this could be your joint... Went in on a Monday afternoon in their lunch time. They weren't busy so we had excellent service and our food was fantastic. I highly recommend their ceviche, jalapeño mango cilantro with chicken, carne asada tequila diablo with the shrimp everything was delicious. Also their Mango margarita. Came back after many years and I love the remodeling they've done with the place. Tables were not socially distanced (6ft) which was a slight disappointment. Our friendly server also seemed in more of a rush to get us out, by frequently coming to clear our plates and handing the check without inquiring on desserts. I had my usual and felt that the salsa verde seemed to have lost its drawing flavors. They did give us a free mole sampler that was very nice of them! We have been long time patrons of YB. We recognize the lack of kitchen staff impacts restaurant capabilities. However, a rude owner needs to understand how this impacts his business. Apparently, per the owner, those seated on the second floor can expect much longer wait times for their meals. Those wait times can and will exceed an hour. And If you politely inquire, so that your child can eat, you will be met with sarcasm and ignorance. The owner should be ashamed of how he treats his customers. We were not alone. read more

Dined at Yerbabuena for lunch with friends. Ramon was our server and provided good service and was personable. He made me laugh a couple times especially when he fooled me into thinking he was pouring me tequila instead of water. For my lunch, I ordered the Chicken Orange Tacos, which are three tacos with grilled chicken layered with orange mango salsa, pico de gallo, cheese and guacamole. It was served with pinto beans on the side. I'd rather black beans, but the menu said no substitutions. The sweetness of the orange mango salsa was so good, and the chicken was moist and tender. I enjoyed this dish very much. I'm glad I came back to give Yerbabuena another try. The last time I dined here I was disappointed with the dryness of the burrito, but my tacos were fantastic. This is a fantastic Mexican restaurant. From the wait staff to the food everything is good. Tonight we had a Carne Astada, steak fajitas, chicken quesadillas and everything came out, without a long wait for a crowded Saturday night and everyone loved what they ordered. The waiter was informative about the menu items, right there for refills or anything else. The only complaint I would have is the acoustics, it can get loud enough that it might be hard for someone to hear conversations. My boyfriend and I went in for some margaritas and appetizers to celebrate it being Friday. We were seated promptly and was greeted by an attentive waitress. We quickly placed our order and received our food in a timely manner. We ordered queso fundido, tortilla soup with chicken, and a pitcher of Cadillac margaritas. The fundido was a heaping portion with large chunks of chorizo. It was one of the best I've ever had. I loved how the chorizo wasn't greasy and was chunkier rather than fine and gritty. I was also pleasantly surprised with the tortilla soup. It was the freshest, lightest tortilla soup I've had at a restaurant. The broth came in a separate small kettle that you pour over the tortillas, avocado, chicken, and rice in your bowl. The flavor wasn't too overpowering and it was very fresh. Other tortilla soups I've had are heavy, greasy and too rich. This was the complete opposite. And the magaritas were amazing. You can taste they use orange juice to sweeten and I'm not mad about it. It took me a while, but I finally made it. This could easily be a five star review and I will provide the needed improvements. It is on the small side and fills up quickly at dinner time (I have not been here for lunch) but they do take reservations. Service is quick and very friendly. Our entrees were served piping hot (which they should be). Our entrees were delicious and not too spicy. Selection is huge. Average price per person with drinks and tip came to about $20. Now, the location of the women's comfort station, smack dab in the dining room, is awkward. To minimize viewing into the single stall, the door swings open away from the wall. This is also where the highchairs are stored. So, you have to maneuver between the door and the highchairs to get in and to the poor people seated on that side, it minimizes their view into the facilities. AWKWARD. Now, improvements: supply small plates to enjoy the chips and salsa, otherwise everyone is dripping on the table. Replenish the chips, a very small bowl of chips served with a huge bowl of salsa= lots of left over salsa and nothing to eat it with. Serve enough guacamole to spread on the entire entree. The little dollop did not make it through one quesadilla, never mind 3. STRAWS. Make those adjustments and it would be 5 star worthy. read more
