Atmosphere - Retro dinner like place without the counter top. Lots of funny things on the walls. Food Drink - Coffee, just black. Breakfast - While in Metropolis you need to have something named after the star. I had the Superman. The Superman is the Loaded Haystack with two eggs and toast. The Loaded Haystack is hash brown, bacon, sausage, onions, green peppers, tomatoes and topped with ton of cheddar cheese. The haystack was loaded for sure, I was full after that. Service - What you needed. The waitress did everything front of the house. Future - Probably as I have another trip to the area soon. read more

Great little local diner. Everything you could want in breakfast and lunch. Terrific service and a really good vibe. I had the country fried steak breakfast that came with 2 eggs , hash browns, and biscuits and gravy. It was a lot but delicious so I cleaned my plate. My wife had a waffle with OJ and coffee. She really enjoyed it. I had coffee, too. We both had water and an asked for hot sauce with my egg and ketchup for the hash browns. Everything came in under 25 dollars Highly recommended. read more

After falling unexpectedly into Metropolis to geek out at the Superman sites, we found a nice BBQ and Catfish place down the road to try. Very local and seat yourself location. We had the BBQ and Cat fish. They both were good, preference to the catfish because the BBQ sauce was overly watered down so the texture kind of ruined the good taste. Either was a good option. Kind of nice to listen to local talk as families and others come in. Lots of bench and table seating. Memorabilia all over the walls. Okay, but not totally clean restrooms. The catfish was in filets and done up right. Lots of side options to chose with your entree. Give it a shot. read more

We are out-of-towners who frequent the casino on occasion. We have tried a couple sit-down, family-style restaurants, and this one is now our favorite. The outside won't wow you, but as soon as you walk inside you'll see how this place is so popular. It's quaint, clean and appropriately decorated. Feels kind of waterfrontish. Alexis was our server, and she was most excellent. She was patient with us, and happily answered all of our random menu questions (ie. What are 'corn nuggets'?). At 11:00 am on a Saturday, there was a constant flow of customers. I had the Barnyard Burger with fries, and my wife had the Blackened Bleu Burger. The burgers were fried, old school (reminds me of Steak and Shake, but Yesterday's are thicker). The food arrived fresh and hot, and every bit of it was delicious. We'll be back. Stopped by for breakfast. Ordered the Country Breakfast on special. It had a crispy country fried steak smothered in milk gravy deliciousness. This was accompanied by two perfectly cooked over easy eggs. Although, I could have had them any way I wanted. A crisp, buttery set of hash browns rounded out this plate. But, we aren't done yet. This comfort food winner was completed by a half order of biscuits and gravy. More of that creamy goodness - Mmmmm! This biscuit was so big and fluffy it was almost like eating a full order from other places. Needless to say, this breakfast was nore than satisfying! We visited Metropolis while traveling southern Illinois and were delighted with a quick lunch here. We pulled in because the parking lot was full. The Wednesday lunch special was buy one get one free pulled pork sandwich. The pork was well-seasoned and not fatty - very good without sauce . Both spicy and sweet sauces we tried were very good, but a little thin. We also had potato casserole and fried corn nuggets. Really liked the potato casserole. And finally, we tried a fried cherry pie. It was good, but did not seem home made. One critique: the kitchen could use a better ventilation system. The restaurant was a little smoky which irritated my eyes a bit. Overall, this was much better than we expected to find in a small town. It's home cooking and fried food, but well done with care. I appreciate a place that knows what it is and does it well; that's what we experienced here. And even though every table was full at lunch, we were in and out in an hour. Stopped in today for lunch during our Saturday road trip to visit the Superman statue. We were 1 of 5 tables, with 2 waitresses and 1 cook. Nice sized menu. Plenty of options and the price was extremely reasonable. The downside? The staff. The entire time we were there, they complained to one another while in the dining room, in the presence of customers with a countertop between them and us. Each time the phone rang, a loud groan with something negative stated before answering. Other random complaints stated involved wanting to take a break, complaining about future shifts and prep-work they needed to do and tubs they had filled with god know what the shift before that was no empty. Not the way I had hoped to unwind on my Saturday drive 3 hrs from home. My recommendation? Bring earplugs or order this food to-go. read more

Stopped in with my wife after a poor visit 2 years ago. I did this after being asked to by the owner. Well the server did her best, a little slow but ok, needs work. The food, all but my burger was cold & I do mean COLD. That manager that has been hired needs an attitude adjustment & learn real customer service. Great little local spot. Prices are reasonable and food was excellent. I had the smothered chicken and really enjoyed it. Both of my kids had burgers and they disappeared quickly! My side salad was excellent as it wasn't a pile or cheap iceberg lettuce...instead a nice combo of greens. The service was so-so but the gal seemed a little frazzled but very polite. She seemed very young so I'm sure she is still learning the ropes. Overall great place...oh and the decor is fun too! read more

We were staying at the Harrah's Metropolis and wanted an early breakfast, which isn't possible on site so we drove around to see what local restaurants were open. We drove past Yesterday's a little after 7 a.m. and noticed the parking lot was full, so we turned around and decided to give it a try. When we walked in there were about a dozen 'old timers' sitting in the corner hanging out.....this is always a good sign! I've never had breakfast at a BBQ place, but I was pleasantly surprised! I had the Superman Special which included loaded haystack, two eggs and toast. The loaded haystack was full of bacon, ham, peppers, onions and topped with cheddar cheese. It was delicious! My husband had the western omelet, which he also enjoyed. Our total bill for the two breakfasts and coffee was about $15. If you're in the area, definitely stop by this place! read more
