We were going to head home from Fargo when on a whim we thought we'd detour over to Wyoming to visit "Devil's Tower" In almost the same way we picked Fargo (throwing a dart at a map) we picked the Ace Motel in Belle Fourche just because it sounded like a nice place. The Ace motel was much more than a nice place, it is a quaint oasis in the wild lands of South Dakota. It felt like a Twilight Zone experience (and I mean this is the most positive way) we were suddenly in the courtyard of a 50's type motor inn. Going into the office we were greeted by Vicki the owner/manager/and more and received the warmest of welcomes. She said that she hoped we don't mind an old fashioned 50's feel, and we didn't mind that at all. We were given a key (YES A REAL KEY) on a diamond shaped plastic key chain (come on remember those). Opening our the door, we found our room had that old fashioned feeling but with some modern conveniences. The Ace motel is a great break from the "corporate cookie cutter" rooms you find in the big chains. Do yourself a real favor and if you have the chance to stay here, do it! A piece of advice BOOK YOUR ROOM DIRECTLY THRU THE ACE MOTEL SITE OR PHONE! I tell you this because those web hotel sites that have those TV Ads, they rip-off the small independent hotel/motel owner, the percentage those Big sites take basically take most if not all the profit for the owner. I would have liked for them to leave the TVs out, but I understand that, for hotels, they are basically as necessary as having a bed. I also waited to write this review until we'd stayed at another historical hotel down the road, for an apples to apples comparison. Staff were friendly and excited to share. We were shown to our room & given a small tour of the property, including the gorgeous ballroom, which was being set up for a private even. They've undergone restoration, not renovation. They've stayed period-correct & everything from the style to the furnishings reflect this. Rooms were quiet & clean. Our room was a shower only room. As I'm half mermaid, I like having a tub option but not a deal breaker. There was a tea cart out, which we found to be a nice touch without adding a lot of cost for them. We appreciated the addition of hallway seating nooks & spent time there daily. My favorite was the exit lighting (see pic), absolutely charming! What they did right comparatively: decor & hospitality throughout the stay. Staff were friendly & daily housekeeping was offered. On check-in we were asked where we came in from, what we were here for, with genuine interest and eye contact. The thought put into each furnishing was evident. So quiet, never a slamming door or loud guest. No odd odors! This is HUGE in a property of this age, when the surfaces have soaked up a hundred years of cigarettes & other stenches! Parking lot is attached with guest spots reserved- no 2 block hike to the car lot for any item you've forgotten. What needed improvement comparatively: communication. The pre-arrival info only made sense after checking in. Arrival was a bit odd, nothing to indicate we were in the right place. We roamed the casino a bit, then approached the bar for assistance. The barkeep was also the innkeeper & only one working. My husband drove around d/t no parking signage. At check-in, the cone stystem was explained & it's actually a really good system! I would definitely stay here again.

There are a few rooms that have tub only - which was fine for our stay.) The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. We were in Room 3 - King Size Bed, small corner sink, and relaxing old-time-tub! The staff was amazing - always very friendly - from the front desk to the casino attendants to the wait staff. Melanie (our host) exceeded our expectations with her kindness, professionalism, smile, and hospitality. We will definitely stay here again - the perfect location for staying in Deadwood!

It sent me to another booking company and I reserved a room on Jan. 15th. We arrived early and called to get an early check in. There was NO FRONT DESK to check in. There were NO PEOPLE on the property. We waited till check in time. We waited another half hour (in a blizzard) in the parking lot. NO ONE EVER SHOWED UP. THE PROPERTY WAS APPARENTLY CLOSED FOR THE SEASON. Now they refuse to refund my money. They are still booking rooms and cabins on at least 3 booking sites. Beware! This place will scam you.

I had to trick the lady to call me back by leaving a message about renting a new room and when on the phone finally she became completely hysterical and yelled at me about how we "trashed the room" because we left sheets on the floor... we didn't use some of the bedding because it was so hot. The only reason we rented a room here for 4 in our group because the ad says it sleeps 6. We reserved through Expedia which defaults to 2 and forgot to change it. We acknowledged 4 would be staying with us when checking in and she charged us extra for that as well. I recommend the Hampton Inn up the street where the rest of our group stayed. It was cheaper and sooo much nicer and free breakfast.

A great deal of attention has been paid to detail. The architecture is wonderful. The room was so charming and very comfortable. The beds and linens were the best. The bathroom also spotless with a very good shower. It is the first bathroom that I have actually put my toiletries on a shelf without a wash cloth underneath. The staff was more than friendly and accommodating. The coffee shop very nice. I travel to Fort Meade about once a year and it was very handy to be right down the road. We are planning on staying again next year.

We headed for the underground parking but then was lucky because there was one spot left for diamond members. There was only one person at the check in desk and we had to wait. I feel that they should have had another person for the Hilton honors desk as in other hotels. The other thing is they charge for parking even for diamond members and justify this by 'giving' you $15 in casino credits. For those who don't gamble - like us - it's not a perk. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom preferred as it's a shower style. The view was nice as we could see trees, the mountain and the sky. The downside for me was the 'spotlight' above the shower. Due to an accident I still am unable to stand bright lights and I feel this light didn't have to be right on top of the person in the shower. A little bit to the middle of the shower would work just as well. The breakfast provided was either a continental style or a discount off a menu item or the breakfast buffet. There is a shuttle that comes close to the hotel you can take to Main Street Deadwood. Not sure I would stay here again but it's an average hotel.

Historically, Deadwood Dick, is a fictional hero type character that appeared in dime store novels around the end of the 19th century. The name became synonymous with the now famous town and several of the residents used it as a moniker. The woman behind the bar was absolutely great, I forget her name, but she was helpful and funny just the way you want bar staff to be. We sat at the bar and she recommended and then let us sample a few localish beer before we made our selection. We tried the fish tacos and a huge burrito (you could literally stand it up like a tower!), I think the Mexican food theme was new, but neither dish disappointed my travel companion and I. They had ice cream available as well. The decor of the bar is kitsch and they were playing this karaoke style music channel on the TV. The music was a mix of old country and 60's-70's rock and the walls were covered in semi-hilarious signs offering advice (sometimes cowboy style) about life or men or how men are terrible at life. The type of stuff you would expect to see at your grand parents cottage, especially at Canadian cottages of that manner. The rest of the first floor is like a giant museum of things for sale, like a pawn shop, and also the traditional tourist grab stuff of Deadwood t-shirts and ton of motorcycle related stuff. I'd stop back in here no problem, loved the hospitality!
