Dining out for dinner in the winter months in Socorro has limited options as many of the restaurants close early. I spoke with the manager at one place and he said ever since Covid, the majority of diners came in during the daytime. So we were glad we found Yo Mama's Grill on the first night we were in town. They serve until 8pm most nights so we arrived around 6:30 and were quickly seated. They were doing a brisk business with almost every table taken. The staff were friendly, hostess seated us and our server soon arrived with menus and to take drink orders. I will warn you, the place can be rather loud when it is full of happy customers but that was ok with us. We all decided to forego an appetizer, even though they all sounded great, but ordered our entrees instead. It didn't take long and salads were soon on the table, which we quickly enjoyed and then they whisked our entrees out of the kitchen to our table, piping hot and carefully plated. We tried the Rib Eye steak, grilled perfectly, a large salad topped with chunks of their fried chicken, grilled salmon over rice and some steak brochettes with grilled veggies over rice. We also ordered a nice bottle of wine! When in Socorro I highly recommend Yo Mama's for a good meal!

A small mom-n-pop type restaurant that looked clean and well kept. I stopped for a late lunch - it was a good time as there were just a few other patrons. I ordered the Old School Club - it was plentiful, fresh, and just plain good! The fries were perfectly done too. And of course, I had to try their fried ice cream... it was such a final palate pleaser. The server was also very attentive and pleasant. I'll have to stop by there again when going through Socorro.

Came into town and searched online where to eat. Thought we would try this spot. Lots of seating in this place. Friendly staff, pretty good recommendations. Margaritas were o.k., light poor on the Lemondrop Martini. The Harvest Burger is messy and delicious, fries are tasty. The reuben was alright. The turkey avocado club was fair. Chips and queso was tasty, the Chiles are local in all of their food, so if you like a little heat. Try some of the local goods.

You're Grill the One New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge part 3 of 4 The relative newcomer in my Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge, as they've only been in business for less than ten years (2015), as opposed to the rest of the competition which have all been around for a minimum of fifty years. But Yo Mama ain't no slouch, as despite the lack of experience, they managed to pull out a #2 ranking in my arbitrary poll. Let's get to the goods: Green Chile Burger (aka Bosque Burger): The Bun: Tasty artisanal bun that's only about a step-down from homemade. 4/5 Green Chiles: Check! There's nothing to complain about here, and they're the only one out of the four that used certified NM Green Chiles, if that means anything to anyone. 5/5 Cheese: The NM standard for cheese is a slice--or three--of American cheese - and they got that right here. 5/5 Ancillary topping: It does come with the standard burger accouterments of lettuce, red onions, pickles, and tomatoes. For a Green Chile Cheeseburger I feel like it should be served plain, as the veggies distract from the harmony of Chiles and beef, but I'll give them bonus point for the extra freshness of these ingredients. 4/5 Burger: Perfectly cooked burger that was juicy and had a nice char. The seasonings in the beef really paired well with the chiles, as the burger as a whole was a harmonious meal. 5/5 Fries: Their fries weren't housemade, but they were delicious and had a tasty seasoning on them. 4/5 Conclusion: Overall, at 27 out of 30 points, the Bosque Burger holds its own against some weighty competition and is a worthy runner-up in my competition. Other observations: *Abundant parking in a private lot *No outdoor dining *Local brews on-tap *Friendly service *Great branding and interior décor that really has the feel of a national chain.

NM 01-2024 Socooro's Yo Mama's Bar & Grill for lunch today. Tony and I had our normal drink order and Tony chose the Yo Mama's Chicken sandwich with cheese bacon tomato & lettuce with BBQ Sauce and homemade chips. I chose the crescent sandwich with ham & turkey tomato and lettuce & bacon with mayo with fries. They were both very good. The tea was terrific The waitress was very pleasant and kept checking on us. She forgot my straw and had to ask for extra napkins twice but other than that it was great. Chef was on point!! Highly recommend!!!

One of my colleagues used to work in Socorro, so she was happy to be our tour guide for that segment of the trip, sharing personal anecdotes, fun facts, local insights, and other background on Socorro County. After our meeting and brief windshield tour, we ended up at Desert Diamond for lunch, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is a no-frills mom and pop that specializes in New Mexican cuisine. There was a decent crowd in the restaurant for the lunch rush, and all signs indicated that this place would be solid. Once we were seated, and I had a chance to scan the menu, I quickly landed on the stuffed sopaipillas since I had never had that particular dish before. About ten minutes later, our meals were expertly delivered to our table in perfect unison. The stuffed sopaipilla came out piping hot and extremely well-seasoned. I decided to enjoy the moment and indulge, effortlessly reinstating my membership in the Clean Plate Club!

I had the chicken burrito plate with green chili on the side. The chili was spicy for sure and absolutely had to go on the burrito because it was otherwise entirely bland. The rice was dry, beans were ok. The highlight of the meal was the sopaipilla with honey. Very tasty. Hard rock from the 70s and 80s was playing. Interesting vibe, not what I expected.

Lots of french fries come with the platter. My husband had the catfish and fries. The catfish was a bit over cooked. The food was good, but not delicious. It's a beautiful place with a nice dining room and bar area. The menu has just enough to choose from that anyone should be able to pick something they would like. Nothing is too fussy and the prices are decent for a steakhouse in a small mountain town that depends a lot on tourism. I have been there for lunch, for dinner, by myself and with friends - probably over a dozen times over several years. Not once have I walked away feeling like I had a great experience. The service is usually decent but the servers always seem way more interested in chatting with each other or hanging out with other employees. On more than one occasion I've heard them complain about other customers or getting another table as more customers come in the door. The food is generally okay but nothing special. It's not a complicated menu but you can order the same thing more than once and who knows how it will show up to the table. Over or under cooked, way over seasoned or missing ingredients listed on the menu - this has happened to me several times. Walking into the restaurant you are rarely greeted by someone right away. It takes a while for anyone to notice you and then if someone does it's usually a busy server or someone who doesn't look like they work there. Today I was greeted by someone who was dressed like they were cleaning out their garage. Several times I've been seated at the only clean table in the room. By the time I've left, the tables have all been dirty and no one has touched them during my entire meal. A table was only cleaned if it was needed for someone else coming in. It's a really bad impression. Something needs to be done to isolate the kitchen from the front of the house. You can hear the kitchen staff yelling, cursing and playing loud heavy metal music throughout the dining room and bar. During meals I have learned a lot about the personal lives of the staff and not because I wanted to. All of these things are fixable. I keep going back because I'll hear that there is a new manager or a new chef but it seems like nothing ever really changes and it's a shame.
