I have been a student at Yoga Circle since 2018. Each instructor has a unique style and skillset while maintaining the same standards and ethos threaded throughout every class. I highly recommend trying and combining each instructor and the various classes provided at yoga circle for a wholistic practice. The three very unique teachers that have distinguished styles are Knekoh, Jacqui, and Rob. I love all three and each teacher serves a precise purpose to my yoga practice. Knekoh for my mindful meditation, Jacqui for a concentration of the body, and Rob for spiritual awakening. The other instructors are also great and are generally a hybrid of these three. If you're up for the challenge, source Yoga Circle as your place to complete the 200 hour yoga teacher training. I was in the 2020 class with Knekoh and Rob. Yoga Circle did a tremendous job at switching from real life training to virtual training. The quickness of the transition was impressive. For the past week, I've been attending several classes and this is honestly the best yoga studio that I've been to. Some thoughts: - Thumbs up for the intimate environment and variety in classes instructional styles (I really appreciate how the instructors are keen on teaching different poses and providing tips). - I really enjoyed the therapeutic yoga class for neck and shoulders. - Knekoh is very welcoming and kind! - The high ceilings and natural lighting from the skylight windows contribute to a great ambience! - From a cleanliness standpoint, I also really appreciate that shoes are taken off upon entering :) read more

As a DTLA dweller, we don't seem to have many options when it comes to yoga studios and what not. Thanks to Yelp I was able to locate this specific studio and I immediately signed up for a class! Located right between Bacot Mercat & Pete's Cafe and Bar you'll find huge bronze doors that lead you right to the mini yoga reception area. Sign in, pay and you're ready to go. The studio itself is quite big - with vaulted ceilings and all. They also have "happy hour" sessions - my favorite being their $10 Monday night special from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm. This flow yoga class kicked my butt - I am sore in areas I apparently never stretch out. The instructor Knekoh Frugé is amazing - she will come around, help you with alignment, give you cubes/ropes/belts - she just wants you to be the best yogi you can be! There are parking lots surrounding the area, and I think they may even validate for specific structures. Great ambience with a helpful staff. If you don't have a mat handy, you can rent one for $1 - bring wipes and/or a towel if you can. read more

Enjoyed taking the noon class with Maureen, friendly and helped me keep up with the rest of the class and very gentle as well. I am sure if I go regularly I will be in much better shape and the end of was lovely and relaxing, just wish we spent more time in the quiet time of letting it all sink in. I had an amazing day after the yoga class. I took advantage of the new student special $32 for two weeks! Maureen is amazing and I can't wait to go back... Now I just need to make time and let my mind and body take me. It's so easy to hate on DTLA. Young, crowded, and seemingly in the midst of a perpetual identity crisis, the question that usually arises is about community. Is there really a sense of community in DTLA? Or is it just a frenzied mass of developers fighting for parking lots to turn into loft apartments, businesses fighting for customers, and people who recently moved to the area fighting for...goth ice cream? Until recently, my answer would have been no. No, I didn't believe that there was a sense of community in DTLA. Not like you'd experience in Brooklyn, or Portland or elsewhere. A yoga class I took yesterday at Yoga Circle has changed my mind. A friend and I went to YCD for a Sunday evening class. Steven was the teacher, and his calm demeanor was instantly welcoming. I got settled in and noticed something different: Steven was doing all of the moves he was instructing the 7-person class to do himself. Apparently this is how they approach things at Yoga Circle. And it really helped me understand the poses. I'm a visual learner and knowing that you can watch the teacher practicing makes it unnecessary to find someone to watch in the class. I found that I could go deeper into my own practice because of this. The room was pretty special too. I'm generally quite skeptical of any comparisons between DTLA and New York, but between the high ceilings, worn but wonderful floors and the fire escape view out of a high window, I really felt like I was in the bottom floor of a building in Crown Heights, with the city swirling outside. The class was anything but easy: 90 minutes, about 40% beyond my experience level and rather fast-paced, but I think I did pretty well. I'm sore today but I feel energized and I slept incredibly soundly. Steven, thank you for such a great class, and Yoga Circle Downtown, thank you for creating such a great space to practice. I'll be back. There is a sense of community at Yoga Circle -- and from what I've recently experienced, in DTLA -- that I'd love to be a part of again. To justify venturing downtown for yoga, it has to be that good. After moving to Pasadena, I still kept coming back. The building has incredible character. The studio itself has high ceilings and a meditative gong. The teachers have contagious smiles. I'd highly recommend Jacqui's classes for the medium to advance student. She is always there to challenge and mentor. For beginners, I'd recommend Rob's Sunday morning class and Knekoh's Alignment and Flow. read more

I have a few gentle suggestions since this is really the only studio around the area. 1) the traffic at the front door is silly. You pay where you also remove shoes, get your mat, put your stuff away and also gather your stuff to leave. There is a whole place off to the right-bookshelves? How about paying over there? 2) it says donation studio but it's not. Let's face it, I think based on the monthly rates (higher than some other Eastside places I might add) you might as well stick firm to the price per class, or have more reasonable unlimited prices. 3) burning incense in the room where and while you are practicing is a no-no. How can you take 'cleansing' breaths with that stuff? Incense is still smoke and an awful way to step out of pollution and into, well, more pollution. My eyes were burning...bad and I was across the room. I can't imagine what the people by the burner were feeling. 4) not sure if it still happens, but my buddy who lives in the building said they used to bang a gong super loud at the end of a "power" yoga class. Yoga Circle Downtown is the place you go after you injure yourself at one of the countless pop yoga studios that pepper the City of Los Angeles. Go to Yoga Circle for a thoughtful and spiritually-guided practice, and for experienced, caring instructors who will help you repair, not wreck, your body. Like many reviewers, I've bounced around to lots of yoga studios in LA's Eastside. I've packed myself like a sardine into steam-room yoga in Atwater (do not wear mascara!) and flowed to Tiesto tracks Highland Park. Those type of classes can be fun once or twice, but Yoga Circle is the place I'll always return for quality, safe and body-nourishing classes. Knekoh, Yoga Circle's proprietor and lead instructor, is everything you want from a yoga guide. First off, she's super smart -- insightful and intellectual, but never pedantic. Knekoh (and other solid instructors like Maureen, Rob and Shad) always remind students that there is no finish line in yoga. It's not about mastering poses. It's about developing deeper awareness of your body and mind. But don't misunderstand, Yoga Circle classes are a serious workout. After a few weeks of Knekoh's classes, my arms look much more toned and defined than they have in years. Yoga Circle is located in a historic, high-ceilinged bank building on Main Street. It's tucked in the back, offering a much-needed break from the noisy street traffic. The instructors always take special care to make sure the temperature and lighting is just right. Oh! I usually go to Bryan Kest's Power Yoga in Santa Monica, because I'm on the west side a lot. However, because i was on the east side this day I decided to check out Yoga Circle before heading home to West Adams. As a broke ass grad student, I limit myself to the pay what I can/donation places, because if I get hooked to a place I don't want to be paying $15 everytime. I've been known to go to yoga 4-5 times a week. First of all, parking downtown is iffy, but I parked on the street right at 6 p.m. and headed into the secure building, which is an old bank building. Overall, the studio is a beautiful space with a mural of a lotus on the ceiling and along a column, and lots of natural light. Knekoh, the owner and my instructor that day, keeps the space really clean. She was sweeping the floors after the class before mine. She led us through poses that are really accessible for folks of all levels, and really is a very nurturing and attentive teacher. She came over to me a few times to help me improve my poses. Definitely what sets this studio apart is the personal attention people get. The space is small, limiting the number of people there, so I guess that naturally lets us have more individual attention as students. This is definitely something I rarely get at places like Bryan Kest's Power Yoga where there are people cramped in like sardines and if one person fell over we'd be playing human dominoes. The other thing that really sets this place apart is that Knekoh actually personally welcomed me and asked me my name. I think I might have gone silent when she asked me my name... it's just not something I've experienced at other places. This is a great place for beginners! I started yoga with this studio 2 and a half years ago. And what really caught my attention at first was their wonderfully warm, sunlit room with beautiful choices of music playing in the background. I also found it fascinating that even though they had a column in the middle of the room, for which most people would have rejected as a studio, they chose to accept their space and painted this beautiful blossoming lotus going straight up the column. I have also never encountered a yoga studio with huge Chinese gongs that they play at the end of the class for meditation. Their resonance when they are played are kind of like how you would expect Tibetan singing bowls to sound, but with a much deeper and earthier tone. Knekoh has been my main teacher and she is extremely thorough. And despite her young appearances, she has been practicing yoga for 20 some years now. She also has a great understanding that every person's body is different and reacts differently to different yoga posses. So if you're pose doesn't look the same as your neighbors, she isn't going to force you to look like them. She follows your natural curves and would tell you what you could do to push yourself to do better. When I first started out with Knekoh, I had incredible knee problems, I was overweight, and I had a huge slouching problem. After just one year with her, I shed about 20 pounds, my own mother says I grew an inch (from not slouching anymore), and I no longer have dislocation problems with my knees because they are so much stronger. I've been to this studio a few times and really love the ambiance and instruction. There are crystals hanging from the ceiling that I find subtle but particularly relaxing. For someone like me, yoga does not come easily and I tend to get anxious and want to leave early. Such is not the case when I come to yoga circle downtown. I've taken the class with Stephen a few times and always feel like the moves are explained properly and the flow works well. The moves are hard enough where I can get sweaty but not so hard that a beginner couldn't get the hang. He also does an acoustic music performance on certain days, and his voice and musical choices always make me feel coddled and warm. This location is a great find and I very much appreciate the pricing options. Kudos to Knekoh for running such a wonderful business and kudos to the instructors for providing classes that even non-yogis can fit into. Wonderful establishment, definitely try it out! read more

I'm loathed to give a low rating because I've always had a great time here. The donation basis "pay what you can" honor roll system is awesome, but I brought a friend for the first time and the instructor kept mentioning the prices, asking what program did my friend decide on, and even said we should pay before the practice because it gets really busy. That didn't give us a great feeling, especially since we were fully planning on paying and we shouldn't have to feel like it's necessary to PAY FIRST. I've been here before, I pay, and one time I didn't have money but I donated a brand new, expensive yoga mat! I don't feel my guest should have been approached in that way...maybe after class would've been more appropriate. You should change your website from "suggested" donation price to the actual price. It's just easier for you and not so alienating for first time guests. My friend was not impressed, and neither was I with today's treatment. read more

Visiting LA can be stressful (especially downtown) and I was very excited to find a yoga studio close by to my hotel. Hailing from S.F. and an avid yogi, I was very impressed by the instructor who I believe was the owner. I arrived at the studio early, and she was giving a private instruction. She welcomed me with a smile. The studio, which is open and airy, is located right in downtown, only 5 blocks from my hotel (the Biltmore). The yoga flow class I took was Saturday morning at 10:30, and to my surprise, there was under 10 people. I liked the added attention! The instructor gave me tips and was very nurturing. I learned how to improve some of my weaker poses, like side plank. The yoga class, overall, made me really work and sweat, while focusing on the breath. We did many sun salutations, balancing poses, and inversions . It was an excellent class. It also seemed as if the studio had many ongoing students, as the teacher knew them quite well. Another positive thing about this studio is that if you can't afford the suggested donation, which is $14, you give what you can. You can even donate your time. Hands down the best yoga studio I've ever been to. A beautiful space, kind, caring and knowledgable instructors. Great prices (especially the new student discount). I purchased the monthly unlimited package with a year commitment, and it is the best investment I have ever made. I'm fortunate enough to be able to go 5-6 times per week, and my body feels so much healthier, limber and energetic. Nothing trendy or hip, just fantastically instructed traditional practice, with a bit of yogic philosophy peppered in. Rob is my personal favorite of the teachers, but they are all wonderful. I discovered this place when I first moved to DTLA a year ago and it has literally changed my life. I have been doing yoga for over 10 years on and off and although I have always enjoyed it as a form of fitness and staying in shape, I never really understood why it had such a cult following. Then I discovered Yoga Circle Downtown. I immediately noticed the difference in energy after just one class with Shad. My mood was elevated, my body was stronger and my mind was more focused. After sharing it with my colleagues, we all started going on a regular basis and could not believe the transformation that took place in our workplace. We were handling stress better, had more clarity on thoughts and ideas during our brainstorming sessions and of course, we all were looking pretty good too! We all are all regulars at Shad and Maureen's classes but everyone there is really amazing. I cannot say enough good things about his place. Yoga has been trending for many, many years now and I've never tried it till I bought a groupon deal for Yoga Circle. I had an idea of what yoga was but man it is tough! I thought it would be like stretching-- which it is, but you gotta hold the pose. The holding part is where it becomes tough. My instructor was Maureen, and she was very helpful. Since I am a beginner, she did come by and correct some of my poses for me. There were about 10 people in the evening, weekday class I attended. The space was large and clean. I had to rent a mat ($1) since I didn't have one of my own. The session was about an hour (maybe a little longer) and I felt like I received a decent workout. We all live very stressful lives and I think activities like yoga help us ease our mind and soul. I will definitely be back this summer for more classes. I do really appreciate the late afternoon classes as I don't like being rushed after work. The location might be confusing as it is located in on the ground floor of an old apartment building. The instructor will meet you in the front, collect money for that day's class, and you will enter into the studio through the back right door down the hall. For those familiar with Downtown, it's right next door to Pete's Cafe on Main St. --- Parking: You don't want to stress yourself out with metered parking (limit 1 hr), so I highly suggest you parking in the public parking garage across the street. It is $2 with validation from Yoga Circle. However, if you are taking the evening classes 6:05pm or 7:30pm then metered parking is free. Double check the signs to be sure. read more

I am no Yoga expert but I have taken a handful of yoga classes from various studios prior to Yoga Circle Downtown. So far Downtown Yoga Circle has definitely been my favorite. At other studios I remember frantically trying to copy the poses of others without ever really understanding the poses and how to align my body. When I took the Alignment & Form 1 class at Yoga Circle Downtown Knekoh was very helpful. She explained how to align the body, what the poses meant and things to look out for to prevent injury. Even with a full class I felt like I was getting plenty of personal attention. Overall it was a great experience :o) read more

I almost want to give it a bad review bc I was struggling - but that's not the studio's fault! I've been out of yoga practice :) Yoga Circle Downtown is a cool space in a thriving part of Downtown. It's got high ceilings and plenty of room for your practice. The owner, Knekoh, is super friendly and welcoming and does her best to make sure your workout is safe and efficient. There's a good flow to the Yoga 1-2 class that definitely got me working hard and sweating like crazy. It's $16 for a single class and they're cool about donations. Knekoh rocks! She was the first to help me get what the hell I'm supposed to be doing in the sun salutation flow. Very precise in her explanation of the poses, which I love because I've always been a dancer, but also rises above the physical stuff, making the everything meaningful and wholistic. I'm allergic to new-agey crap and it totally works for me. The other amazing thing about Knekoh is how well she can teach headstands. I've watched dozens and dozens of newbies come in scared of them, and walk out totally comfortable with them after a few sessions. The only other instructors I've had there are Shad and Maureen. Like Shad a lot, though he's very different - more mellow and into stretches. I have a friend that absolutely adores his early morning class. Maureen, who often subs for Knekoh, is a newish instructor to yoga, but recently shes' really grown into her own style of teaching, and I'm starting to like it more and more. The studio's a great space with super high ceilings. That really makes a difference in all movement classes - something about the desire to fill all that space with your body and energy. I love the way the sunlight comes in through the skylights on Saturday mornings. read more

I adore this studio. I've been to all different kinds of yoga classes, from small, intimate classes to big 24 hour fitness classes, to slower paced/breath centric classes, to fast paced all over the place classes. And this studio is definitely up there on the scale of 1 to awesome. The three instructors I've had class with thus far, Bethany, Knekoh, and Shad, were all different in their approach to their class, but ultimately centered around the same theme of inner peace and challenging oneself in a healthy way. I've left each class having felt appropriately challenged, energized, and sublimely tranquil. Their schedule is rather accommodating with morning/noon/evening classes and the environment is really quite perfect for a yoga studio - one big, open loft, with wooden floors, "spiritual" decor, and an amazing flower painted on the ceiling/beam that holds the ceiling up. The prices are also very reasonable, especially if you buy one of the packages. I am very thankful for this studio as I don't know where else I would go for yoga without having to waste gas driving into Hollywood or Santa Monica (poor Downtown and its limited yoga options...). read more

I started yoga classes 2 weeks ago. Knekoh, Maureen and Shad are wonderful instructor. Shad has been my main teacher I have learned alot. I am a beginner, and he has been very helpful in my development as a beginner student. Trust me I need all the help I can get. Shad has been more then helpful. My favorite part of his class is the meditation. I leave feeling relaxed, and renewed. . Knekoh is wonderful as well. She really help me understand about certain beginners positions that I was not sure of. I feel very lucky to get one on one attention from each of the instructors. I took a class with Maureen today . She got me to do my first head stand. Maureen took the time to show me, and gave me the confidence, and security to do something that I feared. Thanks Maureen for giving me confidence to at lease try. I really love Yoga! The studio space is awesome. Everyday is a learning experience. I've been doing yoga over 10years in a few countries in Asia. It was very very disappointing for me to go to yoga studios in LA for years since most of the yoga instructors do yoga to make a living, not for teaching real yoga. BUT I was so impressed by Maureen who really appreciates yoga and life. She has passion and she knows what yoga is. She is not a person who just sitting or walking around the class room, ask you to do some poses. She shows you and helps you how to do it correctly. Our instructor was Maya, who was filling-in for another instructor but I felt fortunate to have my first experience @ this studio with her! This is the most meaningful review I will ever write because this place is technically "pay what you can" and is run on the honor-system, so I want to help as much as I can. I have only been one time (tonight) but I was catalyzed to write a review because I partially decided to go based on the reviews. Like others here, I am allergic to new-agey stuff and I have been allergic to the other 2 yoga classes I've gone to... so this is only my third try at yoga, but I felt really comfortable and yet really challenged. REALLY challenged. I did my first head stand with Knekoh. It was like a yoga class with Kate Bush: acrobatic athleticism but graceful and her sing-songy "step--or Jump!" So, I'll just start by saying I have 12 years of dance experience (ballet, modern, lyrical), but until about a year ago I had never tried yoga. I am a bartender living in downtown and had been wanting to get back into a regular workout routine. I randomly tried a class at Yoga Circle Downtown. It was a class instructed by Jaletta Kalman, Tuesday at 9:00pm. I was instantly hooked!!! Since then I have tried two other instructors at yoga circle, who were awesome, but Jaletta really takes the cake!!! It doesn't matter what level you are, Jaletta offers different modifications of the asanas from beginner to advanced to accommodate various levels. She's spot on with pranayama (yogic breathing). Jaletta's classes are Tuesday 9:00-10:00pm, Thursday 6:00-7:30pm and 9:00-10:00pm. She finishes her classes with shavasana which includes relaxing sage and a dab of lavender oil (if you'd like). If you are looking for a new yoga home, you've found it. read more

Here's why I think you should come to Yoga circle: it is one of the best opportunities to start a DAILY practice with teachers who care. Daily meaning a sustainable investment- one that is both convenient and worthwhile. I have been practicing yoga on-and-off since 2009. I must admit that like many on here, I often sign up for studios that offer the most daily classes and the cheapest price. So on first glance, yoga circle, which offers 3-4 daily classes, did not seem like a good fit. I signed up for the two-week introduction because the studio is very convenient to my work. Two weeks later, I realized I had attended 10 classes. That's every day except weekends! I've never had a studio that is so easy to get to, where i know what each class will be like, and that has consistently added a boost of energy to my day. I work in an office, so the ability to take a break and realign is priceless. Yoga circle is true value. Knekoh and Rob and experienced teachers who bring a fresh perspective and new poses every day. They are there to help you breath and restore, not to try and do as many poses in an hour as possible with bad form. And it is a workout. So glad this place exists! read more

I came to Yoga Circle Downtown because I had a friend who was a regular, and as I was an absolute beginner it was important for me to feel comfortable (I'm a bit further along now, but still have a lot to learn! ;-). The instructors are outstanding to me. Maureen is incredibly effective in that she is able to be focused yet relaxed - gently helping people to learn proper form and be aligned in their poses. She always seems aware and present, allowing for different individuals' capabilities in class so that beginners can learn while more experienced folks are still able to benefit and grow. And the tone in the class is down-to-earth -- both the meditative/spiritual and mind/body fitness aspects feel in balance to me. That pacing and balance is not easy... Maureen's an outstanding teacher and a good guide to many of her students. Knekoh has a great place, and has set a wonderful tone... I feel that practicing here has really changed my life for the better, and highly encourage anyone who wants to experience yoga to try it here... read more

I LOVE this studio. The normal prices are a bit out of my price range, so I;m not the most regular attendee, but whenever they are having a special rate (i.e through groupon) I am there! My favorite instructor is Maureen, but all of the other instructors I've tried are great too. **update -- after miserably attempting to find another yoga place closer to home for the summer, I've come to appreciate ycd so much more. This place really is a gem and I'm very lucky to have found it on the first try! I took my first yoga class here after reading the reviews on yelp and I am now addicted. Go to Knekohs class for the full body Power Yoga, its like taking whatever level of yoga you are at--to that very limit, and then pushing just a smidge more, and again, and again, these smidges add up. Go to Shads class if you need to expand your true self. ex., if you want to get your Hanumanasana on. This is your place. Go to Maureens class if you seek peace. I don't know what it is, I'm like a step away from Samadhi when I take her class. So if you take all three Teachers on, you'll be ok.
