I always have positive experiences at Yoga Heights. The one on Georgia Ave is a nice walk away from my house, but I go to both locations. The staff at both locations are always welcoming and both places are very clean. I go to all of Alex Hall's classes and workshops. I've been a student at YH for well over a year now. As a patron, I've been treated extremely well by the staff and ownership since I joined, and have been rewarded in so many ways for my fealty to the studio. They all seem to be warm, lovely people; I've never felt pressured to buy something, or felt like I was being taken advantage of. Beyond that, as I've advanced as a yoga practitioner, I find that even the basic classes are as challenging for me as they were when I began practicing yoga, so I never feel as though I'm slacking off by going to a 'Back to Basics' class. Each teacher has a style all their own, and if you're not hung up on understanding the nuances of different yoga styles, it makes each class its own challenge (people ask me what style of yoga I practice, and I tell them I have no idea, just "Yoga Heights style"). Also, I'm pretty allergic to outright yogic mysticism and spirituality, and with a few exceptions, YH's teachers and classes tend to be more about the physicality and psychology of your in-the-moment yoga practice than exalting the spirit into mystical realms of rapture and cosmic oneness, which is fine by me. Very few OMs have been part of my YH experience, but your mileage may vary! I recommend YH to anyone I know who lives within a few miles of the studio, even if they happen to live closer to other nearby yoga studios (there are a lot in this part of town). Finally, the psychedelic art they often have on their walls is pretty awesome. You should buy some. :-) read more

This place is great! Have been going for a few years and have always been impressed by the management and quality of teachers. I also travel a bit and they have been super helpful in helping me accommodate my membership when I am away. I usually go the Georgia Ave location, but also travel up to Takoma Park for classes there. As for the teachers, have particularly liked Alexandria Hall's classes. She offers a very unique combination of affirmation, inclusion, soul, and mindfulness that I have not found with any other teacher I have had. I had a HORRIBLE experience at this studio. I took an all levels flow class at 10:45 AM on a Saturday. The class was good, teacher was good... BUT... they allowed someone to babysit 2 toddler children in the lobby while the parent was taking the class. The kids were running back and forth across the studio hallway, yelling, screaming...etc. The noise could be heard over the music in the studio. I also heard them yelling during shavasana. Because of this, I will be going elsewhere. There are plenty of studios in DC that don't allow children. read more

I purchased the 3 classes for 30 and only went to one. Although the location was close to Petworth, I felt like I didn't connect to the prenatal class. It was pretty big and the instructor was slightly disconnected from the class. I have taken another class at another studio and really liked that the instructor introduced herself and asked our names. It's the little details. read more

I came for Intro to Modern Dance on Sunday afternoon. The class room is spacious. There were 4 of us plus the instructor, Sadie. The class wasn't intimidating at all and she constantly asked if we'd like the steps breakdown from the beginning or continue. I've only gone to their prenatal class, but I've been to MANY in the area, and this is my favorite. Jess does a great job balancing the relaxation and strength-building aspects of a prenatal class. Just as important to me though - she takes the time (and the class is small enough to do this) to have us introduce ourselves and say something short about our pregnancy. That small act is often overlooked in our area and has made it easier to meet other moms/moms-to-be in the class. Another reviewer mentioned the class pack expiration being too soon - I agree with that. If only all studios had unlimited time to use your classes! But, I have yet to see that anywhere, so I won't dock them a star for it. read more

I love love love Restorative Yin....it really calms me down. Plus the instructors are really good about adjusting you - which for someone like me who knows just enough to get themselves into trouble. You cannot beat the $30 for 21 day deal. I am new to yoga and tried a few different classes. The Beats yoga class was really cool. I think that might be my favorite. Hot flow was a great class and I was pretty much able to keep up even as a novice. The Modern Dance class was different. Not really my cup of tea but something worth trying at least once. Sivananda yoga was a little to deep in yoga theory for me but great for folks really into that. Zumba had great music but I think I need a little more experience first. It seemed like more of an advanced class. The All Levels Flow on Sunday was PACKED when I was there. It was a little too packed so I guess its a really popular class. I think I might need to stick with the less popular ones. My son really loves the Family Yoga. It is definitely not a calm session but hey you are dealing with a bunch of toddlers. He has a great time and asks to go all the time. I haven;t had the opportunity to utilize the child care option because it is not offered at times that I can make class except on Sundays when I have more flexibility. The rooms are really good sizes and everyone is welcoming. I also like the retail area in the front even though I haven't bought anything yet. It looks really nice. they also have different workshops available too and they seem to do lots of other fun stuff like rooftop yoga, social hour, retreats etc. Overall great location, tons of classes(especially less traditional ones..I wish I had gotten to try the Fusion Flow class and the Budokon class which is like a yoga/martial arts class), and great customer service. Someone actually called me to see how my first week went. That was pretty awesome. read more

I started attending Yoga Heights in August of 2014. Almost a year later, at the risk of sounding sappy, I can honestly say the studio has changed my life. I had dabbled in yoga a couple of times before, buying promotional packages here and there, but never really developed a practice. That all changed after experiencing yoga at Yoga Heights. I think the biggest pros of the studio are: 1) Approachable classes (minimal chanting - which had scared me away from some previous beginner classes) 2) Sense of community (potlucks, fresh fruit, outdoor rooftop/garden classes, etc) 3) Welcoming attitude to all people and bodies (I could barely touch my toes when I started!) A great addition to Petworth. It was my first time at the studio, so I took a class for free! The woman at the front desk was extremely friendly, told me all about the studio, and poured juice shots for people as they came in. My instructor was great and I felt like I got a good workout. If this place was on my way to work, I'd probably be a regular, but it is a little bit out of my way. The studio itself was clean and well-kept. They also have a CSA make deliveries there! read more

This is a great yoga studio and a great addition to the neighborhood. There are two rooms, both very nice and clean. There are good options for classes and they seem to be adding more too. I especially like Michelle's Thursday noon class and Paige's hot yoga class on Friday mornings. All the instructors are great about adapting the practice to your level. The variety of classes is also great- you can get your butt kicked in a power flow class or take it slow with mindfulness and meditation. I have been going to Yoga Heights for the past 6 months and really enjoy my experience. I am a runner and often use yoga as both a strength-training and cross-training day. There is a wide variety of classes and different instructor styles, so you are sure to find something that suites your needs. The yoga studio itself is simple and relaxing, and I really can focus in on my practice. I usually go to hot yoga or power yoga in the mornings, and if Fridays allow the beats yoga is always fun! I especially enjoy Sadie Leigh's class. She does an excellent job of catering to both beginners and more advanced yogi's, allowing you to modify as needed. She is also very open to suggestions. I know that the studio is continually incorporating new instructors and classes, and I am happy to see more and more people at the classes! read more

I have been a member with Yoga Heights for over a year and completed their first session of 200hr RYT through Yoga Alliance with them as well. Most of my yoga experience prior to YH was YouTube living room yoga because I don't necessarily fit the "yoga body" box and I was very intimidated to try a studio; especially because the money factor was also an issue at the time with a husband in grad school. A friend of mine initially invited me because she had purchased a home around the block and was enjoying class there. I went, hesitantly, and was very pleased with the experience. I took Amy's "Fusion Flow" and had so much fun! I had met Jess before at the Y and found her warm and welcoming and was pleased that the studio embraced her laid-back, unpretentious vibe. I became a studio assistant to help with being able to afford classes and found a lot of comfort and confidence in classes. I am particularly fond of classes with Jess, Angela, Sadie, Sam, and Steve. They all have very unique and different styles which challenge me in different ways. I have found some classes/teachers don't jive as well but if I can look past what I didn't like and instead think about why I didn't, or what I was able to gain from it, it helps me to not feel like I "wasted" a class but just got something different than I anticipated. When Yoga Teaching became an aspiration, I decided that Yoga Heights was the place for me to invest, not only because I trusted the instructors, but because I believed in the community and it's mission. The YTT program exceeded my expectations; deepened my asana practice but more importantly gave me insight, confidence, and growth in my mental and emotional space. I didn't think at the time I would want to be a "yoga teacher" - and I likely won't ever be one full time, but I do have a newfound passion in bringing the peace, fun, and movement of yoga to people who, like myself, believed it "wasn't for them." Does this studio have all the bells and whistles others I've gone to? No, not really. Does it have everything you need to move on your mat in a safe and mindful way? Absolutely, and that's really much harder to do. read more

Just tried this studio last night for the first time and I have zero complaints! I took the Hot Flow class from Jess and it was great. The studio itself is clean and doesn't smell badly (many hot yoga places do) even in all the heat. The class was challenging, but Jess gave out a lot of variations on poses so that all skill levels could partake in each pose. I had never been much of a yoga fan, but tried a class at Yoga Heights over Christmas and loved it. Have been going twice a week since then, and really enjoy the range of classes and instructors there. The back to basics class was great for a beginner to start with and then explore other options from power flow to restorative. The space is comfortable, roomy and very clean. I love this place. Not only are the classes and teachers great, they have paid attention to every detail to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. The mini fridge is stocked with several re-hydration options and the bathrooms are complete with showers and complimentary hair elastics and q-tips. Mats are available to rent and I appreciate that they clean them in between each use. The staff is always friendly and welcoming and I feel like I can call Yoga Heights my own. I've been to several classes and every teacher I've had is fantastic - the sequences are inventive and there are classes (like Amy's fusion flow class) that you just can't get anywhere else. There is a lot of variety in the schedule and I can always find something that fits my mood. They have lots of deals on class packs, and a great intro deal for new students. This place is AWESOME! We did a private class for a friend's birthday and WOW! They rolled out the red carpet for us. When I initially reached out they were very responsive and made booking quick and easy. When we arrived they were friendly and very attentive (asked the birthday girl what playlist she preferred, what level of flow, etc). We had a phenomenal class with Amy- we all felt the hour flew by because it was fun but challenging. We then enjoyed cake and champs on the floor of the studio before leaving. I also thought their studio was adorable (not too boutiquey, but not to bare bones either) and clean and nice. This place easily gets 5 stars for the fantastic yoga, great (and affordable) private session for a friend's birthday, and an overall great experience! If I lived closer, I'd be here weekly. I'll still make an effort to attend classes, despite the distance. read more

She did a great job finding partner poses and fun things for us to do as a mixed-experience group and tied in some really cool dedications to the bride. I have enjoyed the classes I've taken so far. I like that the studio is close to my house in Columbia Heights and that it offers many classes at convenient times (before and after work). This review is specifically focused on renting the studio space at Yoga Heights outside of normal yoga practice hours. We were looking for a spot to host our daughter's 5th birthday party - a tough proposition when the birthday is in February (weather concerns), you want to have enough space for about 30 five year olds to run around and expend energy (space concerns), and you don't want to spend a ton of cash (cost concerns). However, Yoga Heights was the perfect spot and eliminated all of my concerns. We were able to secure the studio for a three hour block on a Saturday afternoon, enabling us to host a 90 minute party with 90 minutes for set-up and clean-up. For an extremely reasonable cost, you have exclusive access to the entire facility - two studio spaces (each about 650 sq feet in size), the lobby, and restrooms. They also have two tables and a dozen folding chairs they are happy to lend. Jess, studio owner, was awesome to work with leading up to the event - she answered all of my questions via email quickly. On the day of the event, one of the studio's staff members (Naima) was on hand to help us out and she was great! My daughter's party was a super success and I owe a lot of that to the great space and team at Yoga Heights. I highly recommend checking out this space if you are looking for some private space to rent for an event. read more
