a variety of sushi on a wooden board

My family and I have been going to Yohachi for over 20 years and they never disappoint. Every time, Tak-san delivers the freshest sushi with the softest rice, and Mayumi-san and co. give us the kindest service. Since Yohachi renovated a few years ago, the interior is modern yet still calming. The jazz and other soft music playing in the background emphasizes that this is a space in which to relax and enjoy. We usually order a mix of items to share. The kakuni is unlike any other dish I've had in Vancouver: salty, fatty and everything you want from braised pork. The BC Roll comes with generous amounts of salmon and crispy skin. It's also rare to fine ume shiso maki, with the ultimate combination of sour, sweet and savoury. In the winter, the seasonal dobinmushi with matsutake mushrooms has the most delicious broth - and once you're done, you also get to enjoy all the nutritious ingredients in the pot. Every dish is put together with care and love. We consider Tak-san and Mayumi-san not only great restauranteurs but also friends. You can't do better for authentic sushi in Lonsdale than Yohachi.

I got the deluxe sushi assortment. I enjoyed every bite, honestly these guys make the best sushi I've ever had. I was wary on the caviar sushi roll, because it had sizeable eggs, but it was especially good. I paired it with the red wine, and it was just a phenomenal combination.

As 2017 begins I am continuing my attempt to hit every sushi place in North Vancouver. Unfortunately I have been spoiled by some of my favourites and cannot help but judge all others against them. This was another place near by that I have walked past for many, many years and finally decided it was next on my list. The interior is very pleasant and calming. I was seated promptly by the curious staff and someone took me order quickly as well. As for the sushi it was "good" but a little generic and I echo the to much rice comments that I have seen in some other reviews. That said, I felt it was quality and it did not taste to me like it was not fresh ingredients. My problem now, after going to so many on the North Shore is that I know of a lot better. I believe to make it as a sushi place out here, you really need to stand out as there are so many places to choose from.

Came here for lunch around 12:15, one guy making sushi wasted most of our lunch break waiting for food... was not a big order. Sushi rolls were small, my Cali roll had hardly any crab. Honestly worst sushi I've ever had!

Looked this place up on yelp and was honestly so blown away. I cannot emphasize how happy I am that I tried this place. First of all it is so cozy and homey and the staff are so friendly. You almost get the impression you're being welcomed into someone's home for dinner. Beautiful cozy ambiance that makes you want to settle in and stay for a while. We ordered a large hot sake, gyoza, pine mushroom soup, torched toro, geisha roll, spicy salmon roll, yohachi roll and a california roll and my god..It was all so good. Lets start with the pine mushroom soup: My understanding is that this is a Japanese delicacy. It came out in a tiny little tea pot with two small clay cups to sip from - so first impression is adorable and I'm already in love. Our waitress graciously explained to us how to eat the soup. Pour the broth into the cups, sip it slowly and enjoy the broth and once the broth is done, you can eat what is in the teapot. It was very choose your own adventure, and I was excited about it. The soup broth was unlike anything I've ever tried before. A delicious earthy umami flavour. Every sip I took it made me want to try more, because it was so unique and powerful. The broth was piping hot, and as it was a cold windy night it was the perfect way to start out meal. As we got to the bottom of the tea pot, we opened it up and pulled out some prawns, chicken, scallions and pine mushrooms. We tried the pine mushrooms last and were so impressed by the meaty texture and their unique flavour - it was the exact umami flavour of the broth and it was phenomenal. I will definitely order that again. For the pine mushroom sup - $11.99. Second - our torched toro - Oh man. I could eat about 30 of these. The contrasting textures, the beautiful knife skills, the difference in heat levels and that slight charred note to both the fish and the rice..It left me wanting more an more of that. I can't get over how beautiful the knife work was though. The simple piece of sushi was so gorgeously presented I could have stared at it and taken at least 6 more photos. (Yes, I'm that girl when I fall in love with a food) Third: our rolls. They were all phenomenal. Lets start by saying this place uses only real crab so the quality and flavour was just there and on point. So. Good. The Geisha roll was stunning with the light pink soy paper wrapping; the yohachi roll reminded me of a sushi roll I had eaten in Tokyo - just simplistic, traditional and the perfect ratio of filling to rice to wrapper. The quality of the fish in all of our rolls was evident and I was left closing my eyes and savouring each bite with every piece I had. So. Good. I wanted to order a sashimi platter not because I was still hungry but because I was so impressed with the quality, presentation and knife skills that I wanted to be gluttonous. I resisted the temptation. Needless to say I will be back soon though, and cannot wait to try more of their creations. What a special little place.

If you want to pay a fortune for minuscule pieces of sashimi, get charged more for an item than what it says on the menu, rude/unfriendly customer service, this is the place for you! I asked kindly for "low sodium soy sauce" for my togo order, and they said "no". I asked "can't you just put the soy sauce in a togo container?". They finally agreed by shrugging their shoulders... sweet right? I for one won't be going back!

    The bar

There are many sushi places in the area and I'm glad I went to this one. For those coming from Vancouver via Seabus, it's a little off the path because it's not really near the market. However a short walk up and it's not hard to find. Once inside, the decor is very modern and relaxing. We were promptly greeted, seated and ordered some tea. The staff is extremely friendly, always saying thank you and following up with you every few minutes to make sure things are okay. The inside is also very clean, almost unbelievable clean. The staff were constantly sweeping and wiping things down. I mean, if you look at any table in the room, there is no dust. The windows are spotless, even the higher ceiling windows. That's tough to find in a sushi place and was very welcomed. For the food, no complaints. Nothing necessarily stood out as amazing but nothing was bad either. Rolls, bowls and appetizers all good. Not much of a wine list but the varieties they did have (Mission Hill, Sawmill Creek, and so on) were fine. The menu is focused to only a few pages and prices are reasonable; $2.00-$9.00 for basic to special rolls. If you're looking for a sushi place near/off the Quay, visit here.

I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. We only waited a couple of minutes before another hostess seated us at the main seating area. The space is very dark, and only lit with candles while the rest of the diners trickled in. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. Soon as the one dish was completed by all the diners, the next round came shortly after. Over 20+ dishes, there was very little wait time in between each. Each time a dish was served, a hostess was there to describe the dish and provided tips on how best to eat it. The food was overall was very good. I thought a few items were very average, most of them were very good, and a select few were truly outstanding. Most of the ingredients are imported from Japan, so I would imagine that it's part of the reason it's so expensive. This is definitely a splurge meal. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. It's not some place I could afford to go to often, but glad to do it at least this one time.

The service was attentive and personal throughout. When it came to drinks, they first asked what we generally enjoyed rather than immediately pushing specific options. Once we narrowed it down to dry sake, our server kindly brought over several bottles and gave us a detailed explanation of each one before we made our choice. Lunch consisted of around 15 courses, with most served nigiri-style. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and I loved the thoughtful combinations of flavors and textures throughout the progression. Each piece felt distinct without trying too hard to be complicated. The experience finished beautifully with ice cream and matcha--a simple, elegant ending to a memorable meal. Absolutely worth the drive from Seattle. This wasn't just lunch; the intimate setting, pacing, presentation, and hospitality made the whole experience feel special from beginning to end.

I always order beef tongue, Japanese fried chicken, and shrimp mayonnaise. These are my must-orders and their signature dishes. The beef tongue is actually quite simple; it's delicious just from being lightly heated. The hot stone slab is served piping hot, perfect for searing meat. Be quick, or it will cool down. The Japanese fried chicken is tender, juicy, and incredibly fragrant. The seasoning is just right. The shrimp mayonnaise is plentiful and a perfect match for beer. The two seasonal or specialty dishes of the day weren't as good, and I wouldn't order them again. My advice is to order their most popular and classic dishes, and definitely make a reservation in advance if you want to come (especially on weekends, as the wait can be up to an hour).

Since I…read morestopped competitive skating senior year of high school, I'm not in North Van very often anymore. Last weekend, I happened to be in the area with my parents, so we went here for lunch. I was overjoyed that the friendly service and high quality food was as good as I remembered from years ago. Adding to the joyful mood were all the festive touches. The restaurant was decked out with a Christmas tree, garlands, etc., and the staff -- including those I spotted through the kitchen window -- were wearing cute, Christmas-y headbands. Being here just felt really familiar and cozy. Momiji has some great, affordable combos and standalone dishes. There's also plenty of nice things to splurge on. I was in the latter mood, so ordered a piece each of the uni and tobiko izura (fish roe and quail's egg) nigiri, as well as a spider roll (soft shell crab tempura with crab meat, avocado, and cucumber). The uni was really plump; the creaminess and brininess mixed with the rice and nori made for the perfect bite. I enjoyed the tobiko izura too, even though it was a lot messier to eat. That piece was topped with so much tobiko! The egg yolk added richness, making the nigiri even more palatable. From a presentation standpoint, this one is absolutely stunning. Spider rolls have been hit and miss for me, but Momiji's is always a hit. The tempura is so light and crispy, and the pieces aren't tiny either! They do a good job balancing the ratios of the other fillings too. And the teriyaki sauce brushed on top is just the right amount -- not so thick that it overwhelms your palate, nor too faint that you wonder what the point of that component is. The sweet, umami-forward notes of the teriyaki elevate every other ingredient in this roll. Perfection! Note to self: I'll be back, and soon. Thank you Momiji!
