I suppose I could go over all the items we ordered and what each member of our family thought of them. The more detail one provides the more useful these reviews might be. However suffice it to say that as visitors from Victoria BC where we enjoy some amazingly terrific Japanese cuisine, we were unabashedly surprised by how good everything was given the more remote location of Madeira Park and the affordable pricing on the menu. The restaurant was busy even when it was close to the last call for ordering at 7:15pm but items were served quickly and were called for, hot. The three of us left happy and full. I guess I should confess I loved everything so much I order more before leaving. We appreciated the cold water served in frost glassed on a hot, humid evening. read more

For a tiny place in a tinier town, this was a solid choice! I got bento, my husband got sushi. All was delicious!

We have really enjoyed the food here the times we have been. We have always had takeaways and not sat in the restaurant. The menu is smaller if you are comparing it to some of the bigger city places but has more than enough. The sushi is fresh. They only use sockeye salmon. The shrimp gyoza are out of this world. To phone in an order for takeout, it usually takes 30 minutes for the food to be ready. We have no complaints and would highly recommend. read more

I called this restaurant hoping to put a takeaway order in before 5:00 one evening . I had to call 3 times to get through , they told me takeaway would be 2 hours! My daughter and did not want to wait 2 hours so we went to eat in. When we arrived there was maybe 2 tables seated and the rest empty. We had to order at the front like a food court The food was fine but very expensive I ordered the sashimi and it was the smallest pieces of fish I'd ever seen My daughter had two rolls (very basic) we also had a few other items and a soda and beer $75 !(kind of felt cheated) The service was just ok , kind of like they were doing me a favor ? This is a great little spot just up the hill on Medeira Park Road in Pender Harbour. We went for lunch and had the Sashimi Bento Box, A Valentine's Special Bento Box and Beef Yakisoba. The Bento boxes came filled with rolls, sashimi, salad and noodles and tempura veggies. They were sooooo good! The sauce on my husbands Beef Yakisoba was delicious and the lunch size portion very generous. Very laid back atmosphere and ordering is done individually at the front counter, not at tables. I stopped by here at Mama's after reading those reviews below... and it was a very disappointing dining experience for us. I and my relatives went on a trip to Sunshine Coast. On the way to Lund, we stopped by Gibson to have lunch. Unlike our expectation, Mama's was a small take-out restaurant in which you order at counter. As soon as we arrived, there were lots of table but the tables were not connected together to fit six of us. The server (or maybe cashier) kept saying they didn't have enough tables for us and continued what he was doing. We were very disappointed at their service and tried to look for other restaurants near by. Unfortunately, there were not so many options for us in such a small town, so we just sat separately... J and I sat together and 4 of my relatives sat on other tables. So, this review contains only the food that J and I had together. For our appetizer, we got their summer special item, Deep Fried Panko (Breaded) Prawns (6 pieces - $12.25). Six pieces of prawn tempura were served on a bed of green salad. The prawn tempura tasted pretty good. Very crunch on the outside, hot, soft and juicy on the inside. I could tell that they used very fresh prawns. Mama's offers only two kinds of sashimi as shown above: Albacore Tuna & Sockeye Salmon Sashimi ($16 for 5 pieces each). Tuna had a very dull colour, and looked mushy from its appearance, but still tasted good. Sockeye salmon tasted just average. It was still pricey considering its quality and quantity. I love cold noodles in general especially during the summer. So I wanted to try their Cold Noodle ($9) which consisted of Japanese udon noodles in cold broth with lettuce, julienned cucumbers, kinshi egg (shredded egg crepes), cherry tomatoes, topped with sesame seeds. On their menu, it doesn't say they use udon noodles, so I expected it to come with soba noodles. Using udon noodles was not the best option - it could be a really nice summer dish if the broth was flavourful enough, but it was tasteless and plain as the thick udon noodles couldn't absorb the sauce. When we asked our server for recommendation, he suggested their California Roll ($4.25) and Dynamite Roll ($5). J and I were both surprised, as these rolls are the basic ones most of times... Anyways, we thought their rolls could be very authentic Japanese so decided to give it a try. Surprisingly, the rolls looked very poorly-made. The sushi rice was barely seasoned, and way too gummy. They used crab sticks and unripe avocados. There was no difference between Dynamite and California Rolls in terms of taste. The prawn tempura inside the rolls wasn't really prawn tempura. It tasted like deep-fried crab sticks. I can get better quality rolls at food court. In short, edible food but unbearable service. I don't want to describe in details, but the guy who served us gave really weird, awkward attitudes... Go back to food, I was wondering why they were so proud to call themselves as authentic Japanese restaurant.. That is a lie. This dining experience gave me a valuable lesson: I can never live in Gibson. PROS + One of the Japanese restaurants available in a small town CONS - Terrible sushi rolls. Nice to find an authentic Japanese restaurant outside the city which has excellent service, serves great food, and has a nice, clean interior and decor. I ordered spring rolls, a spicy salmon roll, a spirit roll, and beef curry with rice. The curry and spring rolls came out nice and hot and the sushi had the perfect rice-to-meat/vegetable ratio. Delicious! Overall, a very great experience here and will definitely come back in the near future. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Solid Japanese food! A pleasant surprise, and a bargain to boot. I suggest the curry, avocado salmon rolls, and the panko shrimp.

Do not let negative reviews put you off this restaurant. I never had negative experience in this restaurant. I live in this community I eat at this restaurant all the time. Never been disappointed in any way. Great food every time. Reasonable good price. Great large selection of menu. Great service always with smile. Nice clean classy restaurant. So lucky to have this restaurant in such a rural remote community. This is not a big restaurant. Do not expect large table for a large group of people. If there are open tables you can put these small tables together yourself easily. This is not Vancouver folks. Very sad to read mean spirited comments from some people on this site.
