This place is so big inside. My friend recommends this place so we walked from our hotel to this place. Service was good. Helpful and attentive. One thing I want to mention is they only have whiskey liquor and not vodka. Tried to ordered vodka and was told they don't have it there. In all honesty, the sushi is decent quality. From the lighting, music, and friendly staff, the atmosphere was great. We ordered a variety of appetizers, a few rolls, the chicken karaage, and a pasta dish. Everything exceeded expectations. I was alone, so I sat at the counter. And ordered the sushi deluxe combo and miso soup. The miso soup didn't taste very good. The food here was decent my friend and I shared the appetizer sashimi (among others) which did taste pretty fresh but honestly, I've had much better sushi in Vancouver. It was also fairly expensive in terms of sushi restaurants. The restaurant is also very large inside and it wasn't super packed when we were there. My biggest concern was how the staff reacted to my peanut allergy. I told the waitress about my allergy and she told me that they didn't have peanuts in the restaurant--which I know is false because there are peanuts in the gomaii. When I pointed that out to her, she seemed flustered and quickly walked away. It didn't leave me confident that my food be safe for me to eat. Cemented as a chain that serves cheap rolls and a la cart, it's a great place when you're out and can't decide on a way to fill up. 2 people can order 4 rolls and a beef teriyaki and pay with a $20 bill each, which costs about the same as parking around the area. Mixing undiluted teriyaki sauce or multiple mayos on a special roll generally kills the flavor of the seafood, but standard rolls are done at an exceptionally reasonable price. For instance, a Chopped Scallop Roll is $4.95 here, but would cost about the same at a food court. For all of their varieties of offerings, the menu is very easy to read. They offer the full range from BC Rolls to Russian Roulette Banana Pepper Rolls, making a return trip good enough to try something new. The location is MASSIVE. There will almost never be a shortage of seats, though service can be slow at times simply because of how many customers can fit into the restaurant at a time. Usually if it's the end of your shit you introduce a new waiter/waitress that will continue to help but No she didn't even do that. there was literally 2 other table and my table so there was definitely enough staff, but nobody not even the other waitresses offered to attend my table. When I finally flagged one of them down 20 min had passed, I ordered my soda and the waitress brought out the bill as well. I wanted to order another Sapporo and something to go but they didn't even bother to ask me. I saw the other tables being attended constantly and I couldn't help but wonder if they were being neglectful because we were Hispanic. Tried the Dynamite roll combo, masago, ikura and dungeness crab nigiri. Arrived with lots of ginger on the side which was really nice as there was enough to cleanse the palate between each piece. The sashimi was fresh and portion sizes were good. Tuna nigiri was surprisingly huge (wrapped under the rice). Unfortunately, the tempura inside the dynamite roll was very chewy and the prawn nigiri was also the same. Although sushi is a cold meal, having rubbery sushi is certainly not complimentary. Really liked the nigiri, although, the ikura was a touch salty as the rice to roe ratio was not balanced. Wish they had more masago as well. Overall, it was ok. Will give them another try another time. Might be an off day but still certainly affordable and very filling. read more

I'm a fan of all the Sushi California's -- I've been to all three locations and so I was very pleased to have one downtown! Conveniently located just around the corner from Burrard Station, the restaurant fills a void of good sushi restaurants in this part of town. I always appreciate the good portions of fish and the option to switch to brown rice (which they use the very nice purple rice). However, on my last visit I found that my chirashi don had noticeably less fish than what I would expect from this order (which I've done a dozen times). Even comparing with other reviews online, you can see that the portions are starting to shrink. Times are tough but it's a little disappointing for what has always been a solid chain. Overall, still a good sushi establishment, but the rising prices vs portion ratio are making me think about what alternatives me be out there. read more

I got the chirashi don and it was really good value for money. The sashimi is very fresh and thick cut and is easily 2-3 pieces of sashimi at other sushi places ive been to. I shared the don with a friend to try some if the other items and this was a highly recommended item at $21 The ratio of the rice to fish is excellent, with no leftover rice that is often common with chirashi dons when the fish is lacking. We've tried the one on Broadway before and well with a busy holiday season we decided to try this downtown location. The sushi is really fresh, and great value. We ordered the chicken karaage, soft shell crab, the 9 piece tuna and salmon sashimi, spinach gomae, avocado roll, tobiko, house roll and chopped scallop nigiri. The chicken karaage portions are hugee. So if your really hungry the portion size is a lil more than double than most places we have ordered from. The house roll was quite big as well as we've noticed other places their house rolls have always been half the size. Props to the restaurant for using the type of takeout boxes as the fried foods travelled awesome without it ever being soggy! So if ever you have a deep fried Japanese food craving and too lazy to pickup your order this should be your go to place for fried takeout. read more

I am traveling from California to Vancouver. I was so happy to see Sushi California that I visited it. However, there was no service from the waitress while we were eating. The only time the waitress came to our table was to pay. The waitress left the card terminal on the table and didn't come back. I printed out the receipt and tore it up myself and left the restaurant. I didn't want to tip the waitress, but I regret giving 15%. The customer at the table next to us was also not satisfied with the service and told the waitress that he would leave without a tip. I think the owner of this restaurant needs to train waitresses. read more

Sushi California is one of the best sushi chains in Vancouver and every location I've ever been to has been so consistent! Having said that, I see that there are some reviews under 4 stars but noticed that they were all from takeout/delivery so I can understand that. This location in downtown is so convenient but hidden from Robson St. so people often don't know about it and will go to a more convenient sushi restaurant that is often more expensive and not as tasty. What's so great about this location is that it is huge and spacious! There are so many tables with huge space surrounding so you are not close to other tables at all and there is also a huge bar! The staff are very friendly here and your order comes out very quickly and efficiently. I went with my mom and aunt and after sanitizing, we immediately were offered tea or water. The tea was a rice tea and was so delicious my mom loved it so much cause it was really light! We got a Wakame Salad, California Roll, Alaska Roll, Dynamite Roll, Las Vegas Roll and Negihama Roll. The Wakame Salad came out first and don't let the small bowl deceive you, there is actually alot, the 3 of us kept taking turns eating it and it just kept going, it tasted really fresh and delicious as well! Then the sushi came out all at once. The Las Vegas roll was a new roll that I haven't tried yet but now it's definitely going to be one that I get everytime. The roll had crab meat, yam tempura, avocado, and cucumber inside and on top had masago, spicy mayo and teriyaki sauce. It was soo delicious and had all my favourite items and was just so flavourful. The Alaska Roll was also so good, I make sure to always get it whenever I go to Sushi California because they make the salad dressing sooo perfect here and it tastes amazing with the fresh salmon and avocado. The Negihama roll was also delicious, fresh fish and delicious scallions, the California and Dynamite were up to standard and tastes exactly how it should taste. What I love about the sushi here is that they make the perfect sushi rice - a little bit dry and sweet, not too vinegary, mushy, sticky or overcooked. Our bill ended up being ~$32 before tip and all those rolls filled us up! This location is officially my go-to sushi place for whenever I'm downtown amd will definitely bring friends here since it is so spacious, clean bathrooms, friendly and quick service, and quality of the food and price is amazing and consistent with the other Sushi California locations! read more

This is a wonderful place I highly recommend this place if you want sushi the sushi is to die for. The food came in under 2 minutes. The service was really fast. The decorations are very fancy and fun. And there is a bathroom if you had to go to the bathroom you can walk 10 feet and then you can go to the bathroom.
