West Virginia hot dog, rated number two in the state

I really wish I could give these guys 10 stars. A couple years back I got two flat tires up behind Spruce Knob where there is no cell service. I was able to patch one of the tires and then band-aid the other. I made it to here and they went out of their way to try and help me. They let me use their phones and wifi and really tried to help patch the tire, even called over some locals but the hole was just too big. It was a long and frustrating day, it took us almost 9 hours to get the car to Elkins and then to get back to our cabin. We always stop here for ice cream anytime we are in the area. There aren't a lot of options but this place has fantastic food and ice cream. Their hot dogs are rated #2 in the state for the official WV hot dog tour that took place a few years ago. Definitely worth a try. The cheese fries are really good, but not good for your figure haha. They have a huge convenience store with thing like milk that you can't get without driving 30-40 minutes. Lots of interesting local items such as honey and jams and jellies as well as some coffee. They also have a huge gift shop with locally made crafts and jewelry as well as shirts and hats and stickers, all the good stuff. Order yourself a hot dog and some ice cream and roam around the store and do some shopping. And if you can find the grumpy cat give him some love.

Yokum's is a very cool country store with a restaurant attached. The restaurant offers basic American fare including burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and pizza. I had a fried chicken sandwich, which I thought was pretty good! And my husband had the WV chili dog, which he thought was very tasty! I thought the store part of Yokum's was way cooler than the restaurant part. They sell all sorts of pantry items, drinks, snacks and sundries too. You can find just about anything you need! They also have a bunch of souvenirs. The restaurant and shop were always busy when we stopped in. We came here quite a few times, since this was close to our AirBnb. It seemed like a hot spot for motorcyclists enjoying the mountain roads.

Check out the cheese slice...a little too much for this sandwich!

It was amazing, food was great and fast despite there being so many people. Could spend all day in the shop.

Bread sticks were decent. Got the steak sandwich and it might have day 2.5 ounces of steak. It was more of a cheese sub with alittle steak.

"Whiskey, Wings, and Pool Sharks: A Local Survival Guide"…read more If you find yourself in Elkins craving good food, cold drinks, and a side of character, roll on down to Whiskey River. The place is pure West Virginia charm with just the right mix of country grit and friendly mischief. The food? Fantastic. The wings are sauced like somebody back there actually cares, and the burgers taste like they've seen a grill before, not a microwave. But be warned: the real action happens at the pool tables. You might think, "I'll shoot a quick game while I wait on my fries." Next thing you know, you're three games deep against a guy named Buck who swears he's "rusty" but just ran the table faster than you can say cue ball. That's when you realize the fries were ready 20 minutes ago -- and you've just been hustled out of your dignity (and maybe a round of shots). Pro tip: If someone offers to "let you break," kindly decline and protect your pride. Order another beer, tip the bartender, and enjoy the show -- because watching the locals play pool here is better entertainment than half the stuff on TV. Whiskey River is one of those rare places where the food's hot, the folks are real, and the laughter's louder than the jukebox. Just remember: eat first, then play pool. You'll thank me later.

The waitress was very friendly and very accommodating with recommendations for dietary restrictions. The fried chicken is an absolute must.. perfectly fried and crispy and good balance of flavors. We tried a few other things that was pretty average like the open faced turkey sandwich and the salmon and mash potatoes. I would also recommend getting the gravy on the side and eating everything with it... not exactly sure what is in it but keep doing your thing Southern Kitchen. Will definitely be coming through again the next time we are in town.

Horrible. Waitress was drunk and food was bad as well…read more Went on Friday Nov 28 for lunch. We like this place as it is local and has ( had) good food and service. We were seated quickly and we noticed our waitress was Slow on getting to the tables for drinks and after about 10 minutes she came by and got our drinks. Upon her getting close and speaking it was very apparent she was very intoxicated and I remarked that it was sad about her condition. As we waited for our food we watched her interactions with other tables and she had problems remembering what table was which. She delivered food to the wrong tables and dropped other food on the floor trying to deliver it. Her fellow waitresses were actually calling her out in the middle of the dining room telling her to get her act together. When she delivered the food the hamburger steak platter was literally a dry hamburger patty that was old and had a thimble of gravy. the mashed potatoes were instant and had been poorly mixed because the powder was still dry in the middle. The glazed carrots were old soggy and brown ( see the picture) . We never got a bill because she just disappeared completely. We went to pay and the cashier was able to look up the order and we spoke to her about the waitress needing some help and her condition and all she would say is " we will try"
