Great experience. Stopped on our way back from Spruce Knob. Atmosphere was clean and friendly. Food was great. We got the fresh fried trout and wing dings. Both were great. I especially liked the trout; big filet and good tasting breading. Even the sides were good; the homemade ranch on the salad was yum! Will definitely go again even if not in the area. Stopped in on the way out into the Dolly Sods Wilderness. The place is quaint and one of the only options in the area. Dining room was open and half full but not busy and it was clean. I sat at the bar to order something to go and was greeted by a woman who clearly hated her life. She was irritated by my questions (such as vegetables that were not on the menu but on a board in the corner of the room, and what the soup was for the day), and stood there with a notepad staring at me until I just rush ordered something to be relieved of her hostile energy. From the outside, Gateway isn't the most impressive looking place in the world. Inside, it's more of what you'd picture for a diner. I came on a Saturday evening, and the place was about half full. My first impression was how cheap the food was- sandwiches ran you about $7 whereas dinner plates were about $10-$12. I ordered the grilled pork tenderloin, which came out pretty quick (same with the rest of the food). My food ended up being quite disappointing. The salad came with a raspberry vinaigrette that tasted almost medicinal. The peaches were average, and the tenderloins were very small and seasoned very poorly. The rest of my group also was not impressed with the food. Our bill ended up being quite cheap, but I really wish I went somewhere else. read more

Garbage Omelet was absolutely incredible. I asked for the potatoes on the side vs in the omelet and a bowl of gravy to smother the omelette in. Great choice! Scrambled eggs with a side of grits were just as good my daughter ordered. My wife ordered two pancakes, scrambled eggs, and country ham. We all walked away full and ready for a day of hiking. Dinner: Roast pork - a bit dry, the sides seemed like they were both out of a can ( sweet potatoes and buttered beans) Chicken pot pie special - underwhelming and a bit disappointed that there was no crust on top, again the sides seemed like they both came out of a can ( sweet potatoes and buttered spinach) The cornbread, however, was excellent. Also, the door came out instantly which kind of firms up that the food was not fresh. Breakfast: Much more enjoyable and definitely much fresher. The garbage omelet was great and huge. Do you have home made chilie?Yes I wish she said it was can . Ordered cheese steak with mashed potatoes. She served everything together chilie was cold ,tasteless,right from the can . Even my 10 years old could cook better cheesesteak I believe they forgot to cook n the green peppers torpido roll was stale and cold . We had no choice . She never came to table to ask how was everything ?I asked for refill for my iced tea she comes with tea try's to fill me empty glass and I asked ice she acted like she was doing me favor . Her hair should be bundle you serving food . Fixing and doing your side work some kinda dressing look like Russian dressing she was keep licking her fingers we grossed out. We loved this little family restaurant! We stumbled across this gem on a motorcycle ride and loved it for several reasons: 1. The restaurant was clean. Visiting during coronavirus, they had taken significant precautions to sanitize their tables and help guests feel safe. 2. The menu is extensive and we were all excited to find some thing we wanted to eat and loved. We recommend the sweet potato fries and the chicken and french fry salad. 3. Customer service was excellent. We chatted at length with the owner, who was personable and helpful. She told us about the area and sites to see on our adventure. The 100% beef cheeseburger deluxe is delicious and the onion rings are scrumpious. All was cooked to perfection and they don't skimp with the toppings. Stopped in here after a day of climbing Seneca Rocks. Located about 12 minutes from the rocks, this place is definitely a gem. Nothing fancy, just great food and service! I had the roast beef on bread with mashed potatoes and green beans and finished the meal with a piece of pumpkin pie which was so incredibly good!!! All the pie looked amazing! On this road trip we took the backroads to Staunton Va. Lucky for us it was lunch time when we rolled up to The Gateway. I had Tuna salad (tend to eat lite when traveling) which left room for pie! If you eat too much take pie to go, it is that good. Had strawberry rhubarb - crust suberb, filling not sweet and not too tart. (Thought of buying a pie to go but do not need to be stuck in a car for a couple of hours with a pie.) Waitstaff super, and the customers good too! Go out of your way to eat here. Solid spot. The best place to eat in the area. It's a toss-up between Gateway and Yokum's but there is really no comparison. If you possibly can please please please eat here. The place is spic and span and super duper charming. The ladies running this place run a tight ship. The food is great. The pies are homemade. I had the butterscotch pie with mile-high merengue and he had the blackberry cobbler. Both were delicious. I could order everything on the menu. My gf and I went to the top of a mountain in a blizzard. Drove and saw some things. In another town, maybe 40 mins away, we finally had cell service and started to figure out where to eat on the way back, we saw this place. I saw it on the road earlier but I thought it was closed. I called, they weren't. After being out in some pretty nasty conditions we were met by a super nice server, gave us the run down. They had a great menu. I don't think anyone *could not* find anything to get. I got the Buffalo Chicken sandwich and the fries. This stuff seemed fresh af. Chicken was lightly breaded and crisp. The fries were great. The rub was the pies. I got the Chocolate PB pie. This was a superb slice. This is the stuff I have to travel from hours away to get. Be prepared for zero cell service and their no wifi. Who cares. We stopped in for dinner before spending the night in Seneca Rocks. The menu is varied with options for fish, burgers, dogs, casserole, and all kinds of sandwiches. I had the soup of the day-- beef and veg. My partner had the fried chicken combo platter w mash and coleslaw. His was definitely better than mine but of course-- it's fried chicken!! Still, fried chicken can definitely be messed up and this one was really crispy and juicy. The mashed potatoes were also awesome. My soup was okay-- I had higher expectations since it was advertised as homemade. For example I expected the vegetables to be from a local farm and hand chopped. Instead it seemed the vegetables were from a bag of mixed frozen veg-- green beans, corn, carrots, lima beans. The beef bits were good but there weren't very many unfortunately. I also ordered the salad-- which ended up being iceberg, tomato, and shredded cheddar. All in all ok. The four stars are for the chicken meal and the strawberry rhubarb pie which my partner devoured. My brother and I are at the gateway family restaurant after a day dominating sissy HS/college spring breakers at Snowshoe ski resort the day before. Seriously....if I could review the average skier at snowshoe mt, he/she would only get 1 star for skiing skillz). Needless to say, after hitting the road back to DC (4 hr drive), and skipping the way overpriced joints at the resort....and driving for an hour....we were famished by like 9. Honestly, the only thing preventing people from being able to count my ribs were my bulging muscles. Anyhoo, we were greeted by Candace the waitress, awesome lady and great conversationalist. I scored the 'World Famous Garbage Omelette'... plus bacon (it already had ham). It was yuuuuge! Also delicious. We regret not getting a slice of pie afterwards, but I was stuffed like a taxidermied pig....but instead of being stuffed with not-meat.....I was stuffed with two forms of pig. I would give this joint 6 stars.....but a sign said the place didn't have wifi....when in fact, both my phones found a WiFi account online. Why no password provided? It would have helped with our directions since the whole area was a cell service dead zone. Anyway....five stars. Boom. Ps....the awesome waitress Candace filled up our travel mugs. As with many others who have reviewed this place, we stopped after a trip to Spruce Knob. I was really impressed at the COVID-19 precautions they had taken. Our meals were reasonably priced and the food was what I would call good, home-cooking standard fare. But, what is not standard fare are the desserts. Holy cow! They have all kinds of them and the portions aren't tiny! Seriously, you should save room for dessert. We'll be back the next time we're in the area. read more

We stopped here for dinner on our way up the mountain to visit Spruce Knob observation tower...the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming, and the waitress we had was attentive and hospitable. We sat down and she came over to take our drink orders. We ordered our drinks and then when she came over with them we had already decided we wanted to order the T-Bone steak. It sounded delicious, and when she brought the plates out, it looked amazing! Unfortunately, my steak was 45% fat and gristle. The flavor was good and it was cooked the way I wanted it to, but I missed out on almost half the size of the steak because of the unedible parts. I ordered mashed potatoes with no gravy and the baked apples as a side. Along with the hot chocolate. The mashed potatoes had good flavor but they were dry and lumpy. I don't like brown gravy so that's why I chose not to get the gravy with it. The baked apples were very bland tasting. It was probably just an "off" day at this restaurant as I've heard from others this place was good. I was not all that satisfied with my meal here, especially since we spent $47!! We ordered strawberry rubarb pie to go and that was absolutely delicious! I would probably visit here again, just to order a different meal. read more

This place did not disappoint!! I loved every bite of my dinner (liver and onions), and my guy was exceptionally pleased with his buffalo chicken sandwich. Not only was it cooked to perfection, but it was an actual breaded chicken breast. It wasn't some premade, frozen, toss in the fryer patty. It was hand breaded.
