Delicious meals and friendly, efficient staff. The rooms are lovely and spotless. Our home away from home whenever we need to stay in town.

This is a nice little restaurant. The server was very friendly and patient with our group. I ordered a ham & cheese omelet, hash browns & coffee. The omelet had lots of ham & cheese, but was slightly overcooked. The potatoes were cut a little too thick & undercooked (crunchy). The coffee was hot and tasted good. read more

I wonder what the chances are that anyone will actually see this review. This was quite a rural town! Writing this review kinda feels like I'm standing in an empty conference room giving a presentation. Anyways, the Star Hotel restaurant appears to be the main restaurant in a strip of shops and eateries in Franklin. It has an interesting decor, with many painted frying pans and saw blades. I never really knew that type of thing happened, but they're all over the place at the Star Hotel! I thought it was so funny, thinking somebody actually deliberately painted a frying pan and a saw thinking "hmm, ya know what would be gorgeous? If I painted this here pan. That will be my signature motif; painting household items. Yes, that is what I will do, and I will become famous!" Moving on... Food was ok. Typical american fare. The salad bar was kind of silly and small, but I will say though that the two homemade soups were excellent. Probably the main draw of this place. Overall food was nothing special, but there's not a whole lot to choose from in this town so it's certainly better than beef jerky and a bag of trail mix. read more

We stopped in Franklin for lunch before camping out at Brandywine Lake Recreation Area. Franklin is a cut little rural town with a classic old style downtown. (I love it there and enjoy passing through every few years). We decided to try the Star Hotel Restaurant for the first time. The interior is lots of wood, painted saws, old tools and stuffed native animals from the area. Very rustic (although a few people might find it offensive I suppose). The women who waited on us chatted endlessly and that might turn some folks off. But, we found her so cheerful and good-natured we enjoyed her attentive service. Anyway, I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and fries. They tasted fabulous, some of the best ever. My wife ordered the grilled chicken salad. They have a soup and salad bar as well that looked tempting. They asked my wife if she wanted to prepare her own salad or should they. So she got to custom make her salad. She found the amount of grilled chicken underwhelming. A drenching rain started so we decided to add dessert. I had the blackberry cobbler and ice cream, quite passable. My wife ordered the coconut cream pie and liked it well enough. Overall, a really great meal and experience. In a true gem of a small town. I highly recommend dropping in. read more

Cute little place. Hours were only until 2pm. Got there at about 1:35pm not knowing the hours and felt bad for showing up so late but the waitress did not seem to mind at all and was very friendly. Heard the prime rib was the best, so went with family on a Friday evening during a recent visit to PenCo. It is my understanding they only serve their prime rib dinner on Friday and Saturday evening. Of course, I truly wondered how great the prime rib could be having had great steaks in great places. Believe me, it was The Best prime rib I've had! No kidding! So, give this hometown place a try and fill your belly with their tasty prime rib (ordered medium rare no doubt)! Stopped for the night on a fall motorcycle ride with some friends. Nice rooms above the restaurant with a porch over looking Main Street. Had prime rib for dinner and a nice bottle of wine. After we to the Moose for Mountaineers game and some entertainment. In the morning the restaurant was open for breakfast with pancakes eggs and bacon. Really enjoyed the West Virginia hospitality! I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the star. Food was excellent and the service was even better. We were playing in a ball tournament and couldn't make it back until 15 minutes after closing time. The owner graciously stayed open and took care of our party of 12. We sampled a wide variety of his menu and everything was very good. Prime rib was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Very good country breakfast as well. If you find your way to Franklin this is a must stop. read more

We Found a Gem in Franklin,WV..Great People, Excellent food, and very nice clean room. 5 Stars in my book. We stumbled on this wonderful place purely by luck and we are so Glad we did. In town for a meeting we called about a room and the lady who answered was very helpful and pleasant. we arrived a little before our meeting was scheduled and got our room. And pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. I could smell the aroma of food a from our room and suggested we skip meeting and eat instead. Well being overruled by my wife we headed to the meeting and after a great nights rest headed down stairs the next morning for breakfast, We were greeted by the owner and his daughter and sat down. After we placed our order the owner came over and we had a great discussion on how the place came to be among other things. The food was out of this world good and so was the atmosphere.Steve and Angela Miller have managed to turn this place into a true down home family place. We left feeling like we had made new friends and had a place we could come back to as many times as we could. read more

We were introduced to the Star this weekend by friends who we were visiting. For breakfast they recommended the buckwheat pancakes, eggs and bacon. Very good! This evening we returned and had some of best prime rib that we had ever tasted and the ranch cut sweet potato fries were a crispy treat. On both visits our waitresses were great, too. Best described as amateur hour. I ordered the crab cakes with 2 sides and a light beer. This was overpriced for the area. The crab cakes were tasteless with bits of shell in them which my friends that crab for a living says mean they bought the cheapest crabmeat on the market. The baked potato was done right but too cold to melt butter. Waitress had to be reminded to bring bread and butter, also cold. Was not crowded. The meal cost about 25.00 not including tip. (Beer=2.50, dinner 18.95 ???) this restaurant does not put your check on the table to peruse before paying, instead you pay at the register not knowing what for. The decor is OK if you are into stuffed baby bears when you come in the door but not great. The lighting could use some improvement. They say they have wifi but it doesn't work. Would be nice to have when eating alone. All in all it was a disappointing experience. The place could be improved by adding soft lighting, wifi, experienced chef, experienced wait staff and removing the tacky decor. Oh one more thing is the hours they are open seem to change all the time. read more
