I came here with my family for lunch on a whim because we were shopping at the Costco across the street, having absolutely no expectations and never having heard of the place at all. It seems like the restaurant is themed after an izakaya but in a space for an American restaurant rather than the less spacious ones I've seen in Japan. Unfortunately, my party was in a hurry so rather than going for the meats and other assorted goodies, we ordered the individual dishes that were on the menu. We ordered a tonkatsu shoyu ramen, a spicy tonkatsu ramen, some chicken, and the cutlet curry. The chicken was eaten by a member of the party who is on a diet so no one else tried her food but she pronounced it "good". The person who had the curry allowed me to try a bit so I can say it was delicious and a overall a pretty good Japanese curry. The tonkatsu shoyu ramen was "so rich it tasted like the whole pig was in there", according to the person who ate it. As for the spicy tonkatsu, it was honestly the best ramen I've eaten in the Houston area. The noodles tasted great, the broth was definitely rich and flavorful, the spice was present but as an enhancement rather than something overwhelming, the pork was cooked to a tender perfection, and even the egg was perfectly medium boiled! What more can I say? I love this restaurant. It is a great spot for a date or to bring friends. It is just a casual and fun place to go. I love just ordering food items on the go as we eat. There is less stress involved and it is actually more fun. What really drives me to this restaurant is that the prices are is just so damn good. It is not expensive at all. I can order about two beers and be very stuffed and only pay about About $25. The seafood, meat, and rice dishes are all on point. And I believe that this is a very authentic Japanese restaurant. I will say that the one annoying thing is the parking. The parking can be limited because the neighboring restaurants reserve their spots. There is some parking on the sides of the restaurant but some of them can be pretty sketchy and I saw a little uncomfortable at one point. read more

Actually had to ask for one before I had to wait longer before getting it. She was not rude at all just extremely forgetful. Why is this place 4 stars? We saw that it had good reviews so we came here to try to kill time before our friend's party. We ordered the house salad, seaweed salad, tonkotsu ramen, and matcha and sesame creme brûlée. We had also ordered a skewer that never came so it was cancelled from our order. The house salad had stale wontons on it that I dug out. The bottom of the salad sat in a pool of mediocre miso dressing and I was turned off. The seaweed salad was ok and pretty standard. The tonkotsu ramen was not enjoyable and gave off a smell of cafeteria Salisbury steak. The meat was tough, mushrooms were sour, and egg was gelatinous. We finished with ugly creme brûlée that broke terribly, didn't taste like sesame, had hot and cold chunks in one bite, and was more of a disappointing frozen custard. This was a little disappointing considering I lived in Japan for 2 years and worked in California for 2 years and had access to various Yakitori venues. First off, the drink menu was limited to just sake and beer. It was lacking mixed drinks which is a must in an Izakaya setting. At the minimum have at least Chuhai and Highballs - two mixed drink staples in every Japanese Izakaya setting. Now onto the food, the food was okay. It didn't have a primary essential of EVERY Yakitori menu which is Negi-ma chicken thigh and spring onion. When the wait staff took our order she didn't ask, Salt or Tare which is standard procedure at every Yakitori restaurant I have been to. The one thing I do applaud them on was their use of the correct charcoal. The issue is that the chef burned some items when they came out. This was my first Yakitori experience in Houston and hope I can find another that is up to par. read more

While Yokushi Robata overall has really great promise and served some very original and flavorful dishes, it still has a bit more to go if it wants to compete in Houston's competitive Japanese food scene. The menu features tapas-style plates, with full tonkatsu, ramen, and rice entrees available as well; at first glance, the menu is very difficult to understand as many other reviewers point out. The items are scattered around the page, broken up by faint dividers, such that finding the prices and names of dishes is much harder than it needs to be. The dishes are all individual, meaning each comes with only one skewer or sandwich, which makes ordering even more complicated. Considering the small portions, I would advise eating a bit beforehand. The meal left us a bit hungry at the end, though many of the dishes were good individually. Despite the complexity, below is a guide for which plates to order, and ones from which I would stay away: RECOMMEND: Fresh Octopus Salad: the octopus is chewy and meaty, holding up really well against the acidity and crunchiness of the cabbage and seaweed bed underneath. The sesame seeds provide a great nuttiness and saltiness to the dish as well. I found the portion and balance of flavors really refreshing yet filling. Chasu Pork Bun: the bun is really light and airy, and exactly the right size such that filling isn't spilling out. While the meat was tender, I found it a bit overcooked-tough and very dry. The slaw underneath brings in a great texture to balance the pillowy bun and (supposed to be tender) meat. Beef Skewer with Teriyaki Sauce and Garlic Chips: insanely good, as it was one of the highlights of the meal. The beef was beautifully cooked-crispy on the outside but really tender. Combining the salty seasoning from the meat with the garlic and light, savory teriyaki, the flavor profile was really well developed and executed. Squid Skewer: Similar to the beef skewer, the squid was really well seasoned, with a great crust on the outside. While squid itself lacks flavor on its own, the nuttiness from the sesame seeds and bold savory sauce helped to elevate the squid. Very good as well. Chicken Skewer: This dish I considered another highlight. The outside of the chicken had a great crust and the inside was perfectly moist. It was almost as if the chicken had been slow roasted for hours. I cannot hype this dish up enough. Overall, incredible flavor...wish there was more of it! NOT RECOMMEND: Garlic Edamame: While the edamame had a really nice garlic and salt seasoning, it was WAY too oily. I had to use a napkin to wipe the grease from my hands every other second while eating the appetizer. For a typically light dish, it was very heavy. Roasted Asparagus: Yes, the asparagus was very crispy, but the inside was very very dry. The asparagus almost fell apart after separating it from the skewers. Besides the texture, the asparagus didn't bring much flavor at all. Avocado: I really would stay away from this dish. My fiance and I ordered the raw octopus, Japanese scallops, Japanese Wagyu beef, quail eggs wrapped in bacon and Tonkotsu ramen. We would say that the wagyu beef was out of this world! It was so tender and as soon we took a bite, it melted in our mouths. The raw octopus was good with sesame and wasabi flavor, my fiance wished it was "live" so he would take more effort to chew. The Japanese scallops were ok. We both liked the caramelized bacon wrapped around the quail eggs, but the quail eggs themselves were overcooked. And last but not least, I was surprised that the ramen was tasty and not overly salty which is usually in many joints. Charming little restaurant situated in a fairly accessible plaza. The decor is a fair representation of a traditional Japanese robata, and the servers were affably speedy. Unfortunately, I didn't try the ramen, as my group just wanted to taste their small dishes for a quick lunch. New year, new restaurants to try! Restaurant is pretty small and parking is limited at night. There's tons of restaurants that share the parking lot but there's 3? spots reserved at the front. Shouldn't have too much trouble getting a table here since there was plenty of seating when my friends and I came at 7 tonight. Service: this is where Yokushi just fails. Made a reservation for 7 for dinner, wasn't told in advanced there would be a "reservation fee" until the check came. This fee was a 25% mandatory gratuity. Our server did such a poor job that 25% was definitely NOT warranted but I'm pretty sure it's not legal... Especially not 25% that's for damn sure. I had to flag down our waiter multiple times, not just once. Had to ask for water refills for the table. After we ordered dessert and were told it would include 2 different flavors our waiter dropped them off. Didn't mention that they were BOTH green tea and that they had run out of the black sesame. First off, you shouldn't just assume that no one would notice that they were both the same flavors and second, the second the realize you're out of one, you should alert the party that ordered it. I honestly would have cancelled my order if I had known since I specifically ordered it for the black sesame. They're definitely not upfront about their "reservation fee" policy or when they run out of things. Food: ordered the octopus salad, chicken kara age, shiitake skewer and the ahi poke bowl personally. The ocotopus salad wasn't bad but I've had better but I was craving a cold appetizer tonight particularly. Chicken Kara age wasn't appetizing in any regard. Breading was so doughy and the dipping sauce they served it with had zero flavor. I would pass on this appetizer. The shiitake skewer was so gross. Forced myself to eat it but they charred it and all the flavor along with it. Doused what I imagine was eel sauce on top (couldn't tell bc the flavor was so burnt) on it and sprinkled sesame seeds on it to make it look decent. The Ahi Poke bowl was just meh. Decent amount of Ahi Tuna BUT there was pretty much no rice whatsoever. Also, why are there mangos in here? Bleh. No thanks. No avocado was included in my bowl... The seaweed salad also had what I think was kale? mixed in. Very minimal amounts of actual seaweed. For dessert we had the creme brulee duo, which includes a green tea and a black sesame. The creme brulee was basically frozen icecream and NOT a custard.. not like any creme brulee i've ever had, mostly because they're not supposed to be dense and frozen and I'm not even that picky when it comes to desserts. Boyfriend and friend ordered the ramen, both aren't very picky eaters but said the broth wasn't rich for a tonkotsu. Tried it myself and it was just very salty. Boyfriend is sick and usually scarfs down soupy foods but he didn't even finish the bowl. Presentation also was trash here. Ingredient quality of the ramen looked to be extremely lacking. Not sure where these other yelpers are eating ramen but I can guarantee you, this is NOT the best in Houston. Pretty sure all of my friends (Hi PL/NN/LN!!) had gripes about the food and the service. The hot tea wasn't served hot, but rather lukewarm. Chicken skin skewer was overcooked. So all in all, this restaurant could quite possibly be the most ridiculous restaurant for its wack policies, terrible service and subpar food. I was going to go to the soft opening of Ramen Tatsu-Ya but they suddenly closed so I yelped "ramen" and found this place. I've been to Sushi Wabi next door before but never noticed this! Guess I haven't been around here much. The place was fairly crowded, parking sucks luckily I got a Yokushi only spot right in front of the store. I ordered the spicy tonkatsu, takoyaki, for robata I had bacon w/ quail eggs, pork belly, chicken wing. The spicy tonkatsu was not bad, it can be a good filler if you're around that area and don't want to drive out to mid-town. Takoyaki was also solid, as for the robata, I love QUAIL EGGS, so that was very satisfying. The chicken wing was also seasoned and cooked very well, however the pork belly was extremely salty, extremely, please fix that. I wanted to try poke so I will be back for that! I was craving ramen at Tatsu-ya (ramen rating 5/5), which is walking distance from my house so we drove by and whoa that line was not convenient to my stomach's demand for food. My husband decided to yelp "ramen" and sure enough, this place popped up. I have always been a fan of a good yakitori spot because there is a great need for it in Houston. We ordered a ton of items on the robata menu (rating for food in parentheses): japanese scallop (4/5), scallop on a shell (2.5/5), chicken skin (5/5), wagyu A5 (5/5), pork belly (3/5), shrimp (2.5/5). We also ordered tonkotsu ramen (3.5/5) and tonkotsu shoyu (4/5). This place cooked all the yakitori perfectly, especially the chicken skin and wagyu beef. i hope that they add chicken livers to their menu, although chicken gizzards were on the special menu that night, i like liver but not gizzards. This place is worth a try if you are craving ramen and 1) dont feel like waiting at Tatsu-ya 2) want other options than just ramen 3) don't want to drive to Tiger Den in Chinatown. The broth was very flavorful and rich. The noodles did not seem like the "home made noodles" but that didnt stop me from adding a squeeze of lime in my tonkotsu-shoyu broth kind of like the tsukemen (dipping ramen at ramen bar ichi and tatsu-ya). They give you a whole egg and the egg was seasoned and the yolk was flowy mmmmm. We were not disappointed at all. I come to eat at places and don't really feel the need to rate the service/ambiance. I watched this place being built and open up and i'm excited to finally try it! walking in it was pretty empty except for two japanese business people who happened to know the owner (yes, they're japanese) and someone else waiting for the rest of their party. We ordered the tonkotsu ramen, kimchi stirfried udon, teriyaki beef skewer, grilled shrimp skewer, grilled scallop skewer, and chicken karaage. The ramen's noodles had the perfect chew and was generous in portion, but the tonkotsu didn't have much grill flavor. the broth was silky, yet the flavor wasn't all there. The kimchi udon had a nice kick and was pretty yummy, although i wish the udon had more chew to it. My rating of the skewers we got: teriyaki beef then scallop then grilled shrimp. Make sure you squeeze some of the lime that comes with the beef skewer, it really elevates the flavor! the scallop was grilled perfectly, but the shrimp still tasted kind of fishy and a little bit deflated in texture. the chicken karaage was meh. think i could have made it myself. fried hard and the chicken inside wasn't too flavorful either. service was good but we were also in an essentially empty restaurant. i've heard good reviews about this place from my friends but for the price and food quality i've given this place 3 stars. read more

This new casual Japanese restaurant has a little bit of everything to satisfy even big groups! They have an extensive and varying menu that is done well. Their menu includes tapas, ramen, poke, don bowls, and lots of robata (various skewers of grilled meats). It's perfect if you like trying a bunch of different things in one meal. We tried a few tapas including the jelly fish (it was just okay, and a bit small for the price), the pork pancake (really tasty and a table favorite), and takoyaki (nothing too special). I had the salmon poke which was really well done and very reasonably priced for the portion size. The fish was fresh and I liked the marinade. My husband got the shoyu ramen and it was really tasty- the broth was flavorful and not too oily, the noodles cooked perfectly, and the pork belly was generously portioned. We also tried a few robata: the dark chicken and beef were both super tender and juicy. Service was great! This place is very new on the scene and already making a good impression with me! I know it shows 4 stars, but I think it's more of a 4.5 star rating! The FOOD: - Hawaiian Salmon Poke: I really liked this, and for only $8.50! It was a generous portion of deliciously marinated, fresh salmon layered over a yummy rice bed, and tossed with cucumber, avocado and edamame. Great flavors! (I actually liked it better than Ono Poke! Slap my hand for saying it!) Rating: 5 - Ahi Tuna Poke: Another win on the Poke front. Parking is very tough in this tiny shopping center, but they do have a few spots reserved for their business, so that helps. The AMBIANCE: It's casual and very simple. A very open layout with cute little tables and booths with cute little wood chairs and stools. They even have a bar area where they have beers on tap. It's kind of dark in there in terms of décor. The SERVICE: We had great service, a very attentive waitress, who took our order via an iPad that she wore on her shoulder. This means, your order gets submitted immediately, which is nice! Wanted to go to Oiishi but they were closed so we tried out this place for a quick snack- kind staff, very cool cute atmosphere with grill bar, soft ambiance and music, definitely able to talk to friends, not too much space so I can imagine it getting full quick on busy days, great draft beer menu and fairly priced drinks, no happy hour yet apps came quick but skewers took too long to come out for the small amount we ordered Ika yaki- Mild squid flavor, not chewy, clean taste, sweet carmalized onions, nice Crunch almost smokeyness from dried sardines. Count me in on the WTF is a 2.50$ tea bag crowd. I ordered the shiitake mushroom, and bacon with asparagus skewers. I guess the asparagus was fresh because my pee stunk and was electric yellow for the next six hours. Although they tasted good they were a little small but that's ok because they were also cheap. The ramen ... : ( I ordered the regular Tonkotsu. It came out luke warm and wasn't even steaming. The taste was pretty stale. It was like flavored water. The noodles were ok but the "other ingredients" you normally get with a quality bowl of ramen were nearly nonexistent. I don't know if it was because I got there at nine, but the ramen will definitely be a disappointment to anyone who has had it before. At around 9:30 they walked around and told everyone it was last call. Why do they do this? If there's ramen in the pot and enough food to make a sale why have a last call? It's not like at a sushi joint where they start to wrap the fish and put it away. On my way out at around 9:40 a party of three came walking up as I was heading to my car. I told them they already did last call and that they should just go to "nearby competitor". Having a sign that says they close at ten, not to mention all the online sources showing the operating hours that say ten may not be popular with customers. At this point It's just not good enough to have that kind of policy. If Yokushi wants to compete in the non sushi Japanese food scene in and around Houston they will have to step it up quite a bit. read more

I like this place very much. I frequent Sushi wabi for their happy hour and noticed on a poster that they're opening a sister restaurant a few stores down, so I had to check it out. The inside is smaller than sushi wabi, but it's okay it fits with the "vibe." The time the skewers come out can vary. Some times I recieve it before my main entree and sometimes after. If you're hangry, I would advise to order maybe a tapa or entree to curb your hunger while you're waiting on your skewers. They had great portions!!! Only thing was the soup was a tad salty but besides that it was great! Loved the Tonkotsu and the Tonkotsu Shoyu

Food was good but my waitress was almost rude. Never introduce dishes I have ordered. She seemed irritated when I asked what were the entrees. Never refill water I requested and I had the spicy ramen. Thanks to the other waitress to my rescue! read more

Was looking for something new to try and saw great reviews so decided to come try it out. We ordered a little of everything just to try what they have to offer. Took a while for the food to come but it was definitely worth the weight. The flavor of everything was great, but the portion were small. So don't expect to get full and the prices adds up quick!!
