Been calling since yesterday during business hours...I have yet to speak to someone. Why isn't anyone answering the phone! Ridiculous!

i didn't even want to write this review but after going twice I was very disappointed. First, I had one practicing student as the initial person I saw who came in with another practicing student. When Dr. Holmes did come in she looked at my face, no type of consult just walked in looked, said that they had prescribed me the right stuff and left. No type of discussion, I wanted to discuss my concerns with her and couldn't because she was in and out. This is the second time I've been there. The first time was even worse because I didn't even see Dr. Holmes when I made the appt with her! The office itself is not inviting, decor is dragged and dingy. I almost didn't want to sit down. And even worse they share an office with a fingerprinting service....like what???? I was just super disappointed. I tried to give it a chance but never again. She was very impersonal and just disregarding to me. Sad, she got a lot of publicity for being popular with black skin and doesn't live up to the hype AT ALL. Customer service should be a priority, but guess not with Dr. Holmes. read more

A total waste of time and money. I was so excited to visit what was lauded as a top derm in the DMV. I first met with a PA who was nice enough but not who I came to see. I then met very briefly with Dr. Holmes. She did not examine my skin. She did not come close to me, she barely looked at me. She prescribed some creams and other medications which I would need to pay out of pocket and recommended that I make an additional appointment for a cosmetic procedure available through her office. When I asked about electrolysis, she told me that she did not know much about it because her office does not offer it. How are you a leading derm and you do not have a basic knowledge of common dermatology solution? It felt overwhelmingly like a sales pitch that I was scammed into attending rather than a visit with a physician. I wish that this trained professional would have told me more than I'd already told myself (drink water, consider laser treatments, buy expensive over the counter creams). Still have no idea what is at the root of my skin problems nor most effective methods to not only solve them but prevent them from returning. Additionally, it took her office almost an entire month to send my receipt to my home but not even 1 week to make a sales call about laser treatments. read more

Please don't give this practice your business!!! I really didn't want to believe all the negative reviews about this practice, but I had a horrible experience here. I read the previous Yelp reviews that advised patients to call ahead to: A) ask specifically to see Dr. Holmes (not a PA), and B) see how late they're running so you can avoid massive wait times (they book multiple appointments in the same time slot). I did BOTH and was assured that I would see Dr. Holmes and that they were running on time. However, I ended up having to wait for 45 min and at the very end, was only seen (briefly) by a PA; Dr. Holmes was already in the middle of a lengthy procedure. Maybe if they have less patients to triple book, they'll have a chance to reform their business practices. read more

The atmosphere was so unwelcoming. No one greeted me when I entered the office and I waited almost 20 mins to be seen. The Dr was completely uninterested in my reason for coming. In fact she didn't even touch or come close enough to see my area of concern. She just glanced and immediately prescribed some medication, that the office probably gets paid to prescribe. She didn't explain jack And just walked out of the room after prescribing medication. No " do you have questions" or " bye." Incompetent. I went in to have a lump on my chest looked at. Dr. Holmes was too busy so her nurse practitioner looked at it. She couldn't tell what it was and they had it removed. Turns out it was a wart with a very expensive price tag and a scar to boot. I was not suppose to have a copay to have the stitches removed, but apparently simply asking a question about another part of my skin, with no procedures done, validates a copay. And for some unknown reason I'm still receiving multiple bills from them. read more

I regret not having checked out Dr. Holmes office more carefully before going there,-- I noticed she focused on dermatology and immunology--I got the impression she focused on cramming as many patients as possible. I wouldn't go to her if she was the last dermatologist avaialble! March 2010 I went for an appointment due to a skin condition on my finger nail. Here's what I got: -- a 1 hour wait -- once with the dermatologist, she didn't ask about what present medication I'm taking; no questions about allergies or present conditions. I got the feeling she wanted to "give me something" and get me out the door so she can cash in on another patient. -- She then looks at my finger and doesn't answer my questions; wants to put some liquid on it without telling me what it was (with vasoconstrictive properties.while I'm taking nifedipine for the opposite reason--to open the blood vessels in my fingers!) --She did not communicate well-leaving me mid sentence, must be their office culture -- Rude treatment from receptionists, they didn't seem to be interested in communicating. read more

I had been to Dr Holmes before for a rash and she had been fine to take a biopsy and see what was wrong- no worn involved for her really. This more recent time I came back to ask her about another issue that involved her knowledge more and she didn't even take a minute to look at the issue or think of reasons for the problem. She simply wrote me a slip to get blood work done and sent me on my way. Never going back!!! read more

I can't recommend Dr. Holmes. She seems very hurried and there are several notices posted all over the exam room that patients are only allowed two (2) issues per consultation. I didn't feel like she listens to why I was there in the first place. I had 2 minor cysts removed and I asked her *twice* if there is going to be scars. She said minor ones. Ummm, the scars are not minor. I have to follow-up with a different dermatologist. And it's almost impossible to talk to anyone in her office. You get a recorded message that refers you to her website or goes straight to voicemail. Can't even get the receptionist. She's awful read more

The experience I had at Dr. Holmes is what makes me REALLY NERVOUS about doctors..little personal attention and inaccurate diagnosis due to lack of experience. I went for recurring skin rash on the side of my mouth. Prior to going I googled what it could be to try and treat it before seeing a doctor. I found the probably cause quickly and it that is quite common, but I most likely needed antibiotics to cure it. At Dr. Holmes office I saw her PA and a student. They both thought it was a cold sore and I was pretty shocked as I have never had a cold sore and showed no symptoms of a cold sore. They told me how they wanted to treat it which was the EXACT OPPOSITE of the info I found online. The steroids they wanted to give me would of made it MUCH WORSE. I said something and ONLY THEN did they decide to get Dr Holmes. She took two seconds to look at it diagnose me with what I thought I had. Took no time to speak with me about why I might have it, just gave me medicine (with no direction on how to take it even though the medicine had some serious rules with it). At the time of my appointment there seemed to be at least 4-6 other patients there. So apparently book a ton of people and have a PA see some. Luckily for me there is google and I was able to speak up. Otherwise I would of been given medicine that would of made it worse, and paid to see only a PA and would of NEVER seen Dr Holmes. Everyone was friendly and nice just not going back due to lack of personal attention by the doctor. read more

This office so disorganized and unprofessional....I'm not even sure how she's still in business. I arrived to my appointment on time and was told that they were running a few minutes behind. NINETY minutes later, without an apology or sense of customer service, I saw Yolanda for a no more than 5 minutes. Horrible, horrible, horrible experience! I'm only giviing it one star because Yelp does not allow you to give no stars. Since this is for a medical specialist I hope people will take it seriously. I was a new patient today and had so far been impressed because I love being able to make appointments online. Rude reception staff on sign-in, not a big deal, as far as I can tell they're the norm in DC! 30 minutes later, i'm called in to be seen by a physician's assistant. Errr... as a new patient that's not on. If I had a choice upon booking I would have chosen to wait to be seen by Dr Holmes. Second point: the lady in question never even LOOKED at my skin! So I wasted $25 dollars and an hour. Yes, the physician assistant offered medication and injections, but since she didn't examine me, i got out as quickly as I could. Interestingly, given the number of people going in and out, I don't know who the Dr actually saw since she would have had to clone herself. A new guy was waiting to start work there while I waited. The team had no idea who he was and he had to wait a fair bit... One word to summarise: DODGY. My advice: stay away. By the way - I only became aware of filtered reviews today. If you take the time to look at the filtered reviews you will notice that there are a lot of them who match up with mine... I do have to say, this is making me consider my own use of Yelp! read more

I went to Dr. Holmes's office for a first time appointment this morning and had a horrible experience. The front desk staff was unfriendly and told me I had forms to fill out even though I had already completed them online. I waited about 25 minutes for my appointment and then was seen by a Physician Assistant for approximately 1 minute. The PA did not ask for any previous medical history or even seem interested when I said I had been self treating my skin for the past few years. She took one look at my face and goes, "probably just acne, I'll write you a script." I have a family history of eczema and have had eczema on my hands, feet and face, and was prescribed eczema medication the last time I was at a dermatologist 5 years ago, but she just goes, "that's not it." Did not explain in any detail what she was prescribing me or what kind of results I should expect and did not bother talking me through what she was seeing. The worst part is that she had a medical student shadowing her - I really hope he doesn't think this how you should treat your patients! I also went to pick up the prescription immediately following the appointment and was charged $80 by CVS because it was non-generic, which would have been nice to know leaving the doctor's office. The PA told me if this medication doesn't work I should come back in 4 weeks. If it does or if it doesn't, I will not be going back. read more

NEVER AGAIN..i waited an 1 hr and 45 minutes to see Dr. Holmes. After waiting for such a long time, I decided to leave because I had to go back to work. Just as I was leaving, Dr. Holmes comes out and asks where I was. I told her I was leaving and that I had to leave and to refund my prepaid copay. She asked if I was going to reschedule I told her NO..she said she had some things to do thats why the wait was so long. I have all the faith in the world in Dr. Holmes. I've been seeing her for a couple of years because as a young adult I lived in Florida when sunscreen wasn't cool. I've always beent treated with respect by Dr. Holmes, her physicians assistants and office staff. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes beyond my appointment time. Recently, I made a mistake regarding my appointment date and showed up a few days early. Not one person told me to go away and come back on my appointment date. I was seen right then and no one made mention of my error. I discovered my error when I received an emailed appointment reminder for the following day. Oops! I immediately called and apologized for my error but was told it was no big deal. We need more doctor's offices like this one. read more

My first visit with Dr. Holmes was over 2 years ago. I was suddenly slightly breaking out with some adult acne. Dr. Holmes examined me and gave me some sample creams that she thought would work good on the acne. One product was great, the other not so much. So I went back a few weeks later and we tried something else which worked great! I had to give the 2nd cream a little while to work but it did the trick! She is very friendly, knowledgeable in skin care and very pleasant to talk too. She listened to my concerns and continued to work with me until we found a solution. What I also like is that she gave me samples, before she gave me a prescription that might not be useful. Once we determined what work well for me, she prescribed the creams. A lot of doctors will just prescribe you something, only to learn that you wasted your money and the product doesn't work. Dr. Holmes is right on the money! Sometimes you have to give the products time to work so you have to be patient. I went back to her in early February of this year (2014) for the same issue. It seems like I actually break out around certain parts of the year. Once again, she did her magic and my face is clearing up! In addition, yesterday I went into her office for different issue (which the nurse at my job told me a dermatologist may be better to see as they usually have products right in the office to treat the issue). Once again, Dr. Holmes did her magic and I am sure the issue will go away quickly. If you are looking for a dermatologist, I recommend Dr. Holmes. She is great! read more

I wish I could give negative stars. I went here as a new patient and got there 10 minutes early to fill out paperwork. I then waited 20 minutes past my appointment time and when I inquired about how much longer the receptionist said there were still 3 people before me! The receptionist then told me they were running behind and when I asked why they did not call to tell me this ahead of time she said "I don't know." I had a terrible experience with Dr. Holmes with a recent skin rash. I saw Dr. Holmes several times, informing her that I had a very irritating skin rash that was getting progressively worse, to the point where I was not sleeping and was extremely distracted at work. I told her that I had come in contact with someone with scabies, but she continually insisted, without even looking at the rash, that I must be allergic to one of my meds that I had been on for years. When all was said and done, I spent several hundreds of dollars on appointments, prescriptions, skin tests, etc.; suffered for months, and missed several days of work. Finally, I drove 4 hours to my childhood dermatologist who immediately diagnosed me with scabies, saying that all of my symptoms were a "textbook" case and it was a "disgrace" that Dr. Holmes was not able to diagnose it. Dr. Holmes did not listen to me at all; she was careless and cost me money and suffering. I would not recommend her to anyone. read more

The staff here is extremely rude. From the receptionists to the nurse. I called once to make a request for a prescription Dr. Holmes and I had not gone over during my visit. I was asked to hold for the nurse who was EXTREMELY rude and not very willing to help. It was like pulling teeth talking to her and her tone made me feel very uncomfortable for even having called to ask. Dr. Holmes is the only person in this office that is actually nice, but like many dermatologists, its a quick, 5 minute process with her. She comes in and pushes you out pretty quickly. She also doesn't ask any questions about eating habits, exercise, or any health related questions besides "are you on any medications?" (I say this because I went in hopes of treating my acne-- these are contributing factors). Then she just prescribes you something and you are done. I hope I can find a new dermatologist that I actually like because this office just doesn't cut it. read more

I came to Dr. Holmes for terrible acne all over my face and back and she was able to prescribe me products that helped it to clear right away. She was pleasant, very knowledgeable and made sure to answer the 101 questions I had. I'm not sure what experiences other people have had with her staff but they've always been nice to me. Dr. Holmes always makes sure I go home with plenty of samples and whenever I need an emergency appointment, she always manages to make time. If I have to wait for about 30 min once I get there, then that's fine. I'd rather wait 30 min than wait 2 or 3 months. Other dermatologists are so booked out. So I can appreciate her fitting me in and the Saturday appointments as well. Basically, if you're looking for a FANTASTIC dermatologist, go to Dr. Holmes. read more

I'm going to be looking for a new dermatologist. I had to wait for over a 1/2 hour for my last appointment. On top of that, I asked for a refill of one of my meds and she prescribed me the wrong thing. When I called to ask about the mix up the staff was extremely rude. The wait was longer than the actual visit with the doctor. I wanted a suspicious blemish checked to make sure it wasn't a mole or something dangerous. Turned out to be a blackhead. I'm surprised by the negative reviews. Some of them just sound like whiny complainers. I've been to this practice twice. I didn't wait more than 10 minutes to be seen. Staff was super friendly and professional. At both appointments I was given plenty of time to ask questions, and did not feel rushed. I took my daughter in to Dr. Holmes office to find out what was wrong with her scalp. There was no one in the waiting area when we arrived, which made me happy...there would be no wait. Well, after filling out all of the paperwork -that was shoved into my hands by the receptionist who obviously could care less that she even has a job - this woman (not sure what her name is) came to the door and called my child's name...except she said it WRONG...and it's not a difficult name at all. So I corrected her. I think she got an attitude and the visit started rolling downhill like a snowball on heated pavement! We went in the exam room and she asked what we were there for. I explained and while I was talking to her, she puts on a pair of rubber gloves, barely looked at my daughter's head, and announces it's dermatitis. She doesn't explain what that means or anything. She says she'd give us some shampoo and topical foam prescriptions. And then she just walks out of the room. At that point, my daughter looks at me and says "I don't like this dr. office. They are not friendly at all. Let's go!" So I thought I would bait the woman with additional questions, like what causes this? Are there any products that may worsen it? She shrugged her shoulders and looks at me like I'm crazy. So in my head, I'm like "yeah, she is straight batty dumb!" So I gave up. I took the prescriptions and we got to stepping. I will NEVER go back there again. My other daughter has an appointment scheduled...but it's getting cancelled immediately. I was a new patient and today, 12/4/2013, was my first and last appointment. I had an appointment at 2:15 p.m. and arrived at 2:08. I was done filling out my paperwork by 2:22. Several patients who came after me where seen before me, despite the fact the paper work was turned in. Admittedly, I was concerned about the quality of service before seeing a doctor because the paperwork was riddled was many grammatical errors. My concern grew even more when I saw the sign or read in the paperwork that I would only be able to discuss two issues at a given appointment. More than two issues would required another appoint. This was NEVER relayed to me when I set up the appointment, I knew I had three issues to begin with, therefore I would not have chosen this doctor had I known this was her policy. I was taken back to an exam room at 3:00 pm. One of the office staff tells me that I have 3 issues written in my paperwork but could only talk about 2 with the doctor. I told her that was never made known to be prior to me taking off of work to go to this appointment. The physician's assist came to see me and I expressed all of the frustrations that I am typing about now. I had 2:15 appointment and it took 45 minutes for me to be seen plus I could only talk about 2 items. She let me explain my third issues and wrote me prescriptions for everything. I will see if the medications work. She did spend a good 15-20 minutes with me and told me the doctor would be in to see me, after waiting another 5-10 minutes I put on my coat and got ready to leave. Dr. Holmes came in to speak with me briefly. I expressed my concerns once again and told her I would not be making a follow up appointment as suggested. read more

I've been going to Dr. Holmes for over a year. She is awesome--super nice and friendly, incredibly smart, answers all my questions, and always helpful over the phone. I've read some of these other reviews, and honestly, as a man married to a Physician Assistant, I maybe have a little more of a realistic view, but these are just hilarious. Some of these reviews complain that they waited for 2-3 weeks to get an appointment---UM, that's SHORT!! Most places make new patients wait for 3-6 months! Also, there was a complaint that she triple books the same slot. Newsflash, people, that's a standard way of scheduling in doctors' offices. You schedule 3 for 9:00, 2 for 9:30, and 1-2 for 9:45, for example. That way when someone is late, there's added time gap for them to be worked in, but the doctor isn't sitting there paying rent, staff and utilities while patients "no-show." As for the complaint that she spends only 5 minutes in the room, this is the nature of dermatology (which my wife also worked in). It's not a primary care office--they are just looking at your skin, and yes, they schedule their appointments based on the number of problems cited over the phone. If you have multiple more to bring up during your 5 minute appointment, any dermatologist will ask you to schedule again, so as not to make everyone else in her waiting room wait even longer because you couldn't remember your laundry list over the phone. People need to stop whining that their doctors charge money and that they make them wait 15 minutes. Doctors are not to be expected to be saints who work for free and rub everyone's back who needs it... But given this particular doc, I'd say she's about as saintly as they get. So thank your lucky stars that you have the opportunity to see this saint. read more

I wish I could give this establishment less than one star. I came in this morning for a microdermabrasion - a cosmetic procedure I have had done many times over the past few years at other dermatology offices. When I first got there, the receptionist didn't even look at me, and got irritated when I asked her to repeat what she said because she mumbled. Then, the PA took me to the wrong room. After getting to the right room, I waited 45 minutes for the aesthetician, Ivory. She then proceeded to bring me to another room, and then gave me the shortest, most painful microdermabrasion of my life. I had to wash my own face, then she attacked it with the machine (even when I told her she was being far too rough), and then I had to wash all the crystals off my face and apply moisturizer and everything on my own. I timed it - from the minute she first asked me to wash my face to the moment I was standing on the sidewalk outside the office, it was 21 minutes - usually these things take about an hour and aren't painful. And they charged $180 for that. I am beyond angry and will actively discourage people to go here if I hear about it. My face is red and raw (which has never ever happened to me before) and I'm out quite a bit of money. read more

I really tried to like this doctor but it just became too hard. First of all, it took me a few visits to realize that if you actually want to see Dr. Holmes instead of her PA, you likely will have to make a request when you arrive for the appointment. Asking for her when making your appointment does nothing to ensure that you actually see her. The final straw happened on my last and final visit. I would think that a dermatologist would go out of their way to ensure a cleanliness. I always appreciate sinks in the rooms at the doctor's office. Not here! Before my last appointment, I could hear her in the next room with another patient. She immediately came into my room and since there aren't sinks in the rooms, I knew that she didn't wash her hands. I also didn't see any hand sanitizer in my room so I know that she didn't sanitize either. I don't know what the patient prior to me had, but I didn't want it. When she came in to do my exam and touched my head I was a little grossed out. When Dr Holmes sat down to let let me know what my issue was, she seemed so disinterested and would hardly look my in my eye. She was either looking at her computer or at the wall or just the air I guess while she was talking. If you want to see a Dr where you feel like they care I don't suggest seeing her. I don't want to get started on the people at her front desk...you can tell that they don't want to be there so, why would I? I took my $ and time to another dermatologist around the corner and now I'm much happier! read more

I've been going to Dr. Holmes' office for over two years for strictly cosmetic reasons: mainly microdermabrasion with Ivory. While the office is dated, Holmes offers good deals on cosmetic services and Ivory is wonderful. However, the receptionists are AWFUL and I'm not going back because of them. I have had appointments where I've signed in, been the only one in the waiting room and then totally ignored. My appointments are always late and when I ask when will I get into my appointment, the receptionist gets all attitude with me - like i'm inconveniencing her. I made an appointment for two services and when I got to the office for my appointment (which was 40 minutes late to begin with) I couldn't have two services! It was such a waste of my time. While I do like Ivory I just can't stand how I am treated by reception and will not go back. They are rude, seem to care less about customer service and are totally incompetent. And I can only think this is a reflection of Dr. Holmes. read more

I've never had awesome experiences with Dr. Holmes, but today was horrible. I originally came to see her because I had mild acne, but wanted consistently clear skin. I've seen her 5 times in the last 6 months and still have no results to show for it. Every time I go, she tells me it just needs a little be longer to work and to come back in 6-8 weeks. Today I had to wait an hour after my appointment time to see her. I asked different staff on three separate occasions how much longer it would be and each told me "just a few more minutes." Clearly that was not the case as I waited for 55 minutes for Dr. Holmes to come into my room. If they had been honest with me and just told me how far behind she was I would have rescheduled for another time. When she finally came in she spent only 8 minutes with me and told me the same thing as every other visit. What a waste. Save yourself time and money and go somewhere else. read more

This was possibly the worst experience I've had at a doctor's office since I moved here 7 years ago. I was optimistic before I went - I was referred by a friend. The staff directed me to the web site (which was impressive) to download new patient forms and have them filled out when I arrived, meaning to me that this was a smooth operation ... Wrong. I was ignored for 5 minutes while I stood at the front desk waiting to be checked in. Then there was the cockroach that was on the arm of the chair of the poor woman sitting next to me. While waiting, I observed several patients who approached the front desk to ask how much longer they would have to wait, as they had been waiting 45 minutes or an hour. The response from the staff was always there are X people in front of you. Which prompted the question: Meaning ... how long? The answer regardless of how many people was 10 minutes. Wish I would have at least had some forms to fill out or something so I didn't feel like I was wasting my valuable time. The "cockroach woman" next to me walked out, but not before telling the front desk that it was ridiculous to have to wait this long, especially when the doctor prescribed the wrong medicine in the first place, which was the purpose of her visit. When it came around to me waiting 45 minutes, I too approached the front desk. I was told 2 people and, upon asking, 10 minutes. I asked what was the hold up. Their response: "This is a very busy office." My response: "Perhaps you can schedule the appointments more appropriately then? It's just not good business." Her response: a roll of the eyes. I considered walking out, but decided to give it the 10 minutes, to which they were true. (I think I got "bumped up".) I was put in a room, but wisely asked how long I would be waiting there and was told it would be right away, again true. The doctor did not greet me or look at those forms I filled out in advance. She asked me what the problem was and I explained I had a few dry patches of skin. Without missing a beat, she told me I had some medical term I didn't understand and turned around to enter a prescription online. She never got close enough to even see the affected areas. She didn't ask me my symptoms, such as: Does it itch? And she never addressed me by name. She continued to tell me about about this ailment as she left the room and assumedly walked to a storage room diagonal from the exam room to get me a sample. I could barely make out what she said, but I I did hear something about flare ups... She came back, handed me a sample, told me to pick up my prescription from the pharmacy the next day, and to come back in 6 weeks. The entire consultation took less than 5 minutes. Before she left, I decided that it would be helpful of me to share with her my impression of my first visit (something I had never done before, but had always wanted to). I told her I had to wait almost an hour which was a bit unreasonable. She replied that she had a lot of clients and was the only doctor. I said I understood it was a busy office, but perhaps the appointments could be scheduled more appropriately. She told me that I should expect to wait an hour next time and plan that into my day. I told her that just not acceptable - I have a full-time job and can't just leave for that long to just wait for an hour to be seen for 5 minutes; that she expects her patients to be timely with their appointments, so it would only be fair that we be treated with the same professional courtesy. As she walked away from me down the hall, she said that perhaps I should schedule my appointment for a different time then. I had already decided not to come back, but this interaction cemented it for me. I handed the paperwork to one of the receptionists. She looked at it and said "This isn't you, where's your papers?" My name can be a male or female name, so I guess she assumed I was a male, despite having checked me in and processed my paperwork.
