They took time to make sure all areas were flat and level. The showers were sloped perfectly to allow water to drain. In the bathroom where we had a tiled shower tray, they cut the tiles to make it look as if the tiles ran under the step. These details make all the difference, and wasn't something you may normally think of.

(license#886570) I won't get into all of the details of our decision, only the key elements which were: 1. Budget, our project came in slightly over budget. Not due to B.I.G, but to a few changes we decided to make and the general nature of working on a house built in the 20s and all the little surprises we found along the way. The important aspect for us was Gavan's clear communication with us regarding our options and the costs associated with each choice. 2. Timing, Gavan has a young child and he understands all of the challenges and changes associated with being expectant parents. He and his crew worked hard to stay within our time frame and still give us plenty of time to get our house in order prior to the baby's arrival. 3. Quality, We could not be happier with the attention to detail that Gavan and crew put into our remodel. Our house is stunning and the work is craftsman-like. 4. Cleanliness, this may not be important to everyone, but construction is messy work and B.I.G. cleaned up after themselves after each day. Gavan and Build It Green was not the first contractor that I contacted for my leak issue, but he…read morewas the first to promptly organize a time to scope the matter. My plan was to call several contractors, collect quotes and pick from the lowest price and/or best match. But, Gavan made it easy enough, and I trusted his assessment enough that I ended up going with him without much additional due diligence. The leak issue wasn't able to be fully diagnosed without removing the stucco on the outside and dry wall on the inside - so Gavan suggested starting there. He produced a small initial quote for labor - which would allow him to produce a more accurate total quote. From there, he provided an estimate that ended up being within 5% of the final cost. He had a wide ranging team working for him - most notably Omar, a very friendly and extremely capable contractor in his own right, as well as several others. He brought in specialists for the roofing and stucco work, as well. The only issue to raise was that scheduling was sometimes challenging - as Gavan is a pretty busy fellow and who was consistently coordinating so many other parties. Sometimes, schedules were shifted around - which did require some flexibility from my wife and I, but nothing too problematic. At the end of the day, he and his team were trustworthy, were all very polite and friendly, and produced very solid work and cleaned up nicely afterwards. I would recommend Gavan and Build It Green, and in fact - when another small project arose within weeks of the big project - I didn't hesitate to call Gavan again.

He actually cares about the quality of the work being done and will offer suggestions about how to make it look and work the best. Jon-Michael remodeled our entire bathroom, which involved removing a closet in an adjacent room and expanding the bathroom into it, moving the shower and toilet to the opposite side of the room, installing a pocket door and installing all the plumbing and tiling. He removed and patched our fireplace so you'd never know it was there. Supervised the refinish of the hardwood floors and removal of the old insulation. Hired the electricians, pulled the permits and supervised the upgrade of all the electrical in our house from knob and tube to 2009 code. In short there's really nothing he can't do and if he can't I'm sure he's got a Sub who will do a great job. I could go on for pages about what I appreciated about working with Jon-Michael but to keep it short I think what makes him so good is he sees each job as an opportunity to create a relationship with the customer and he goes out of his way to do whatever it takes to form that relationship. We couldn't be happier and in the future Jon-MIchael will be the first call we make if we need any work done on our house.

We had an undetected water leak in a difficult to access area. By the time we became aware of it,…read morethe resulting dry rot had compromised a 14' structural beam, several floor joists and other wood elements. While not a huge job, it was challenging. I contacted Benjamin Construction and was impressed by their response in several ways. 1. Benjamin responded to my initial inquiry quickly. 2. Within a few days, Benjamin came by the house to look over the problem. The communication was good and he was quick to respond to questions. A contract soon followed. 3. The work commenced within a couple of weeks. It would have been sooner, but the unusually wet May and as the work was being approached from the exterior, we lost a week. (Work included the removal of part of a deck.) 4. Once started, the work progressed continuously and with good workmanship. When the inevitable unexpected arose, Benjamin identified alternatives so that we could manage the work scope. Benjamin also had to drive some distance to find a match for our 30+ year old siding. To complete the job by the target date, the carpenter worked extra hours and cleaned up the site well before leaving. Benjamin Construction met all my expectations on this project, good communications, good craftsmanship, overcoming unexpected obstacles, and going the extra mile to meet the schedule target. I especially appreciated the focused effort, even though it was not a huge project.

He also worked well with the architect, the engineer, and my family. He was hands-on, responsive, and efficient, every step of the way resolving any issues that came up. A month or so after I moved in, the wall behind the toilet was damp and it turned out a faulty gasket had been leaking and ruined the dry wall. Rene had his guy come out, cut out the wall, change the gasket, replace the dry wall, and paint - no questions asked. However, I was very unpleased with the work he did. To start with, the spackling on the bathroom wall was so coarse and dented that it looked like something on the outside of a house. The painting job was horrible. It took quite a bit of persuasion to get him to fix it. We had a new shower/tub surround placed. When I close the bathroom door, the surround rattles. When I go to steady myself on the shower wall, it pushes inward and it's not sturdy at all. It does not look as if there's any caulking where the shower wall meets the bathtub. We are worried about leakage. The company said they could not put shower doors there because there was nothing to hold them in place. We had him do the linoleum in our bedroom. It was all buckled when finished and he agreed to replace it. He was very accommodating about replacing it. He did not argue at all. However, unlike the first time that he did it, he would not supply laborers to move the furniture back into the room. My husband has a bone spur in his right shoulder and could not fully lift the furniture. Therefore, there are three big tears in my brand new linoleum. As I said, I think he tried really hard to do a good job on my house. But I have a mess to clean up. I will have to hire somebody to redo my linoleum again.I used him because he did such a good job on my friends house. But I am really sorry that I did. I hate to sound harsh. As I said, I wrestled with myself for a long time before I left this review.

NC was an absolute pleasure to work with, the workers came on time every morning, they completely cleaned up at the end of each working day, and they even built a temporary fully operational kitchen on our back patio with a running sink, washer/dryer, stove and frig that we had use of the entire time. Al himself went over all of the architects plans with us at the beginning of the project to triple-check that we completely understood and were familiar with how the job would progress and what we could expect at the end. And the final result was nothing less than astounding. Everyone who has seen our kitchen has raved about the work, the detail and the outstanding professionalism of the work they did, even the city inspector and our insurance adjuster.
