We prefer not knowing our next door camper neighbor's business. I was looking for a campground to stay at for the weekend. But, every public campground was booked till October. I happened to stubble on Kal-Haven Outpost in a google search and this place was way better than I expected. The owners are a young couple who juggle their business and their little children simultaneously. But, they do their best being focused and attentive to their customer. They answer all my questions and always return phone calls (when I attempted to call them and they were busy). Our spot was in a wooded area and was about 50-75 feet away from the next door campers. Our campsite had a fire ring, tent area and picnic table. The bathhouse is accessible for everyone staying at Kal-Haven. The bathrooms were extremely clean and awesome. So much nicer than any other campgrounds I have stayed at. And there are very nice showers with a bench and hooks for hanging clothes and towel. I would recommend this place to everyone in a heartbeat! New, clean and nicest place ever! And I love the office/store/gift shop!

Tent-campers review…read more I grew up camping here, and have brought my kids back to make their first camping memories as well. The park is clean, friendly and most of it is well-shaded. The sandy beach is flanked by picnic tables &benches, and a water trampoline is anchored out a ways for the big kids (and adults) to play on. The bath house is large enough, and always kept clean. The showers are coin-operated but I don't mind giving up a quarter to scrub up. There is a little camp store with all your little incidentals, ice, soda and a decent supply of candy for the kids. They have a large park on site, complete with climbing equipment, a basketball court and even a permanent corn-hole area. Now to explain the 4 stars. Everyone at Timber Trails is very friendly and fun loving, but I wish the staff would institute a noise policy after dark. The kids slept fine due to exhaustion but on a few occasions I was kept awake til after midnight (once til 2am) by rowdy parties on the other end of camp. Their cackling and yelling could be heard over the entire park and nothing was done about it. Timber Trails would be great for RV camping (crank up the A/C to drown out the noise), or even a bunch of hard-partying tenters, but we'll be making memories elsewhere from now on.

There was an unfortunate incident in which another camper assaulted several other campers. Language from camps email: "there was an altercation between one camper and several other campers." "Your daughter was not hit, but some of her cabin mates were." This is in a cabin of 10 year old girls. To be clear: This was UNPROVOKED attack. There was not an altercation where children were yelling at each other and things escalated. This was a child that had many issues and was not handling them well. I feel bad for the child, but sleep away camp is not the best environment for both this child and the other campers. I am an educator, I understand different behaviors, emotions, etc. My concern is how the events were handled after the altercation. Amy (the owner) and her staff do not think this was a big deal. Additionally, more of a concern is the deceit and dishonesty. I read Amy's response to the other review mentioning this incident. In an email, we were told that the girl was removed from camp. However, she returned to the property to compete. I will not argue whether or not that was a good choice - I will argue that parents should have been told that the girl would return. The communication we received was that she was gone. Additionally, Amy's response to a follow up phone on the way home was: "Kids get in fights, this stuff happens." No, it does not. My older son has been to several sleep away camps and has never had this experience. An unprovoked attack on children should not be shrugged off. Especially in the climate we live in today. While camp is wonderful for many kids, some are not able to handle the experience for whatever reason. This child had numerous outbursts and attempted physical harm prior to the incident where she did in fact harm others. Additionally, it took multiple camp counselors to calm her down. She was running around the camp ground, banging on cabin doors, etc. I absolutely feel bad for whatever this child is dealing with, however, that does not mean the safety of other campers should be put at risk.

Our group of four did the 4 hour 11:00 AM in 2 two-person kayak on a beautiful sunny day. We all…read morehave kayaked many times over the years, but never the Dowajiac River. Contrary to the first review, The guys working there were friendly and offered good advice (even when we asked about some other kayak venues around the state) The business site is rustic but loaded with fine river worthy kayaks (and canoes). We drove our truck out to the 4 hour destination and they happily drove us back (for a reasonable fee). We took a cooler full of drinks and granola bars. and I brought my phone to take photos. The river was moving a day after some heavy rain, but the sun was shining. The river is narrow and somewhat winding and offered plenty of overturned trees and obstacles made the ride fun to navigate, but no rapids or danger. I recommend kayaks, the guys we saw in canoes were struggling to maneuver at times, but it's totally fine either way. This would not be a fun river to go tubing as you'd be stuck in branches, muck, spiderwebs constantly. The trees overhang the river with sun bleeding through to provide a beautiful aesthetic. The ride was shady enough that I didn't require sunscreen. I didn't have any issues with mosquitoes either. The banks were very mucky and almost always too steep to get out and walk, plus I think most of the river was off privately owned farm land.. It made for some advanced impromptu riverbank bathroom breaks due to the beverages, but that's all part of the fun, right? There was a nice grassy spot on the final quarter of the ride near an overpass that we saw people having a picnic. We saw a muskrat, king fisher, large river frogs, and several species of turtles. We passed a few friendly people on our ride (it was Sunday of labor day weekend), but it was mostly desolate and quiet. Our moment of excitement came when we approached a nearly impassable part with a couple of fallen trees. Our kayak was temporarily hung up but our friends didn't have time to avoid us and they tipped/submerged their boat and ours tipped and sunk in the reaction. It was about 3 feet of water, the current was strong but not overpowering. I somehow miraculously kept my phone above water while the rest of my body was dumped in. We also somehow recovered the life jackets/paddles/boats/cooler/car keys. All we lost was a coozie, pair of sunglasses, a t-shirt, and our pride. After our refreshing dip, we tipped the water out of the boats and were back on the river in no time. Our exit location was easy to find by a well marked overpass. We had a great time, a very nice afternoon well spent.

We rented two Motel Rooms this last weekend in South Haven for two nights for our family. The…read moretotal cost for a Friday and Saturday Night was just under $1,000.00. I rented here because the reviews online that I had read were better than good, but when I really dug into other review sites once I returned home, other than where I booked from, I found a completely different story. I want to make sure that there is a fair recommendation out there for people to really make up their mind on whether or not they should stay here. First, I do want to mention that the owners were very polite to us and we have no issue with them. Also, there is a charm to these old-style motel rooms including the beautiful tile in the bathrooms. Additionally, there are new entry doors with digital locks as well as new windows. And true, this place is serene and great if you like peace and quiet - but still, there are many additional things to take into consideration. Although the rooms appear nice in the pictures, there are still issues like water damaged ceilings, water damaged bathroom doors, leaky tub fixtures (which were also way out of date and require replacing), drywall that needs to be retaped and mudded as well as a musty smell to the rooms that don't show up in pictures. One of the two rooms had bugs, but not because the room was dirty and I'm not talking cock roaches, just bugs. The reason? The wall air conditioner is not sealed on the sides and bugs get in through the outside vent, and then through the side panels that are not sealed against the air conditioner. There were also some inconsistencies like one of the rooms had a microwave, one didn't. One had information about your stay, one didn't. There is no coffee maker or ironing board in the room, but you could ask at the front desk to use these items (listed in the information about the room) we did not, we might have used these items had they been in the room, but since it was not readily available, we just made other arrangements. Again, I really want to be fair here - but these basic amenities plus others like ice were not available to us. Additionally, there was no pool, there was no breakfast. The thing that is really agitating and I think that is important for travelers to know is that there is NOTHING here that justifies the room rates and just because it is in South Haven doesn't justify the price. The weekend before and as a part of this trip, we stayed in a Comfort Inn and Suites that had a nice, comfortable, up to date room, with an indoor pool and included breakfast for $120.00 per room per night in the Wisconsin Dells. For what I paid at Jensen's, it feels like we stayed in a dump.
