I walked in on time for my appointment after finding this place through an online recommendation. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. The staff member clearly seemed uninterested in cutting my hair. He gave the front desk a hard time, and they went back and forth for a while before he ultimately refused to even walk over to his chair to provide the service. The entire interaction felt unprofessional, rude, and uncomfortable. Customer service should never feel this way, especially when someone has made the effort to show up on time for an appointment. Reputation: While having such a big expectations about this place based on its reputation. I walked out very disappointed about the service I've received, first I got serval small cuts (see pictures) now I'm very concerns about health related hazards because I didn't get after shave or alcohol to sanitize the area / skin cuts. Lack of attention to detail: professional was too rough, the entire experience was very uncomfortable. Instead of relaxing all I wanted is to leave. Not what I asked: this is not the haircut I asked for, I asked and showed pictures to the professional of what I wanted and I specifically asked to NOT cut the top, first he didn't get me the style I wanted and two, he cut the top. I showed them a picture of the haircut I wanted and they did not follow it whatsoever. The stylist just gave me the haircut that they wanted. There's nothing wrong with the haircut and I look fine but it's not what I wanted whatsoever. They cut it way too short, and now I have to spend months regrowing my hair. You don't go to a barber expecting to walk out with a random haircut. I couldn't even stop them halfway thru because from the go they just cut off so much more than I asked them to. read more

The lady didn't know what she was doing and when I said don't cut any off the top she cut everything off. Not happy about the lack of communication between the lady and me. Today was the 6th time I've been to this barber shop in the last 2 years. In 6 visits my hair has been cut by 4 different people, because the first 3 (who had done great jobs) left due to poor treatment by the owner. When paying, I was charged significantly more than usual. I asked about this and was told that their prices were increased due to Covid. I told them I understood this happens, but asked where it was posted or displayed in their store that the price had increased and why they had not mentioned it when I called to make an appointment. I was quickly referred to the owner who immediately got extremely defensive and worked up and told me that he was charging more by order of the governor of New York State. This is obviously a blatant lie, the governor did not order any business to charge more (but may have simply permitted it). My issue is not and was never with paying extra, it was simply with the fact that the new, higher costs (which are more than just a couple dollars) were not posted or displayed or mentioned anywhere at all and came as a total surprise after the fact, when a customer would have no opportunity at that point to decline the service already completed. The owner then tried to tell me that he had covered the previous prices and ordered a new sign which was arriving Monday. Righttttt...Then he said the extra money they were charging was because they were going so far above and beyond, and that was absolutely not true because their COVID safety measures were the bare minimum at best. I would HIGHLY suggest going to another place if at all possible. Hair cuts are now over $40 for a place with poor COVID safety measures and a disrespectful owner who clearly does not care about customer service. read more

I just went in for my first post-quarantine hair cut. Lauren did a great job, as usual. The measures they have put in place to protect the customers and the staff were thorough and reassuring. I was temperature screened outside before entering the shop. They are using disposable plastic body covers and everyone has a mask. Everything was very clean. I always have a good experience here and find the humor just as on point. If I could fly to NYC every other week I would just to come to this place. York Barber is the place I've been looking for for years--no question about it. Everyone there is incredibly friendly and welcoming, but it retains the feel of an old-timey, slightly exclusive neighborhood barber, and they give a great haircut. I've gotten regular cuts from Hugo, who is a total wizard, for several months now. Somehow, from my vague descriptions ("It went, like, to the side...ish") and disjointed hand-flapping, he is always able to extrapolate exactly what I want, then execute it perfectly. Joseph is also excellent, and I highly recommend him as well. Plus, there's just something special about the straight razor shave on the neck. It's $28 for a men's cut, which is more than reasonable for the level of service, though I don't know whether or not it's more with a full shave. read more

I really enjoyed my experience here, but I'll admit that the haircut is a little bit pricier than I'd prefer, but the service is stellar and they give a good cut plus finish off with shaving cream and a razor treatment. This is what you'd expect from a classic barbershop. What drew me to the place was that they were a barber shop that was open after 7pm on a weeknight (Thursday). Despite that they were closing at 8, they sat me down at 745 and still gave me a cut. I'd love to go back here sometime and get a proper shave. I'm slowly losing my hair, yea it sucks, but it gives me an opportunity to guilt trip my mom and dad. A bad haircut to a full head of hair can still work, on a not so full head of hair its easy to look like an escaped pervert or Krusty the Clown. These guys did a great job. These guys are princes among men. Set in an old-style barber shop I haven't seen since I took my Grandad out for a trip, the turn-of-the-century decor (and pricing) really just draw you in. I was at a total loss on a frosty morning. My hair dryer had conked out and I really had to head out to work. I tossed a hat on and headed on the subway, but with the cold weather I was really starting to catch a chill. I went from one salon to another just asking for a blowdry. $65...$75.... I finally stopped at my college bookstore and asked where the nearest Lemon Tree or SuperCuts was -- I just needed someone to blow dry my hair without taking more than the medical co-pay required if I just left it wet and caught an actual pneumonia. As you can imagine, they don't tend to get too many female customers. I mean, it's a Barber Shop. Still, they were very polite and heard me out when explained why I was there. I am a girl with shoulder-length "Asian hair" and I have never felt more safe than in Maru's hands! She works wonders and has given me a hair cut that is stylish and very easy to maintain. Came in for a shave face & head after seeing my doctor around the corner. This place was off the chain. My hair was short so I thought everything would be quick. far from it. I got the full treatment starting with rubbing all kind of oils and lather on my head followed by a number of hot towels. Lathering my using a brush and started the shave with a straight razor. Top shelve shave other shaves I've gotten where pedestrian compared to this class A treatment. I felt like Dom Corleone. Now we move to the face and again he rubs amazing scented oil on my face followed by hot towel, between my head & face he must have used 8 hot towels and five different kind of oils and lotion. I was detailed out of town for year and I was excited to come back to have Loren cut my hair again. She cuts my hair exactely how I like it every time. Best barbershop I've been to. Why go to the second story place? Favorite story: I'm in the 2nd chair, Howard Cosell is to my left (chair 3), and another fellow is to my right. (chair 1). Chair 1 starts spouting off about a big fight scheduled for that night. After a while Cosell says to him ' How can you be so stupid?'. Chair 1 responds 'Who do you think you are, Howard Cosell?!?'. Total silence, then Cosell says 'Yes, I am Howard Cosell!' Chair 1 realizes his gaffe, winces, jumps out the chair and runs out of the barbershop with the cape still on! Best shave I ever got. Not a place I would regularly go $40 is a lot for shave. Lauren was amazing with the straight blade. More towels and oils and lather that ever had on my face. When it was all finished 30 minutes later, I walked out and felt like a new man. Very refreshing and a great way to start the day. The atmosphere was awesome felt like I was sitting in the same chair as Lucky Luciano. If I was able to afford going each time I needed a shave, I would be there.
