I had the worst experience there yesterday that guarantees I will never shop there again. There were at least 3-4 people working the floor that day and only one other customer in the store besides myself. Apparently that customer and I were not important enough to break up their little gossiping session behind the register. I was not greeted when I walked in nor at any time was I asked if I needed assistance. And assistance would have been great because the shoes on the floor were a mess and not in any semblance of order I could figure out. I work a retail job myself and am well aware that basic customer service is not rocket science. Finally too frustrated at the lack of options available and ZERO customer service I received, I walked out. NEVER going back there again. I will bring my business elsewhere. read more

They won't be in business for long!!! I have very difficult feet to fit and will buy several pair if I like them and the fit.. When I told the sales men my size and wanted to see what he had in my size he told me I had to choose a style because he would have to look on all the shelves to see if they had my size... then he lead me to the sales rack and started pulling off shoes and saying " do you want something like this, or like this , or.. He didn't give me an opportunity to answer .... I was the only customer in the store but I had interrupted the personal conversation he was having with the other salesman and the cashier!! I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it wasn't a great or pleasant experience. I always want to support local but customer service was horrible. I don't know if people had the day off or at lunch but they were definitely understaffed. Waited to try to get help for my daughter for almost 15 mins. That is just to long to wait then to finally get help and find out they don't have their size. It's like a dessert hours of labor mins of pleasure. Waited for ever once I got service was out in two mins. Don't think I will be back here ever again and that's really sad to say. read more

Great shoes... Poor service. It's painful to walk in the store. Really creepy old guys that don't acknowledge anyone else's presence for fear of forgetting their personal conversations. Women typically don't do that. Bravely walk past them, then deflect the attempt to follow you after you've been looking for 10 minutes. Avoid eye contact during the cash register transaction, and breathe again once you safely leave through the front door. Went to Yorker this AM with my husband to purchase a pair of walking shoes for him. It was very busy shortly after opening. We were taken care of by Gary who could not have been nicer and was very knowledgeable about special needs for problem feet like my husbands. Gary encouraged my husband to walk about and take his time to "bond" with the various walking shoes tried on. While my husband was walking about, Gary did take care of other customers but did not forget about us for a moment. When you pay the kind of money for the quality types of shoes available at Yorker, you do want to spend a little time wearing them to be assured of a proper fit. When I checked the site for opening time, I was quite surprised at the negative comments of some people in their reviews. I have shopped at Yorker many times for myself and have always had courteous and caring service. Thank you Gary for making our experience at Yorker a very pleasant one. read more

Woman staffer asked what we were interested in,wife said rockport(an advertised line) walking shoe ,said had rockports but not woman's walking, had Merrills, asked how far wife walked ,said about 3 miles a day said,no,you need sneakers and pointed us to a wall and we said not interested in sneakers and she walked away. As we were leaving we saw dozens of rockport women's shoes on display. Without any further contact from any staff,my wife tried on half a dozen different pairs of Rockport Women's walking shoes and picked one. Price was only save. read more

I can't say enough good things about my experience at the Johnston store. I have problem feet and spend hours & hours going from place to place desperately trying on shoes with no success. My Mom took my 3 brothers & I to the original Yorker on Chalkstone Ave in Providence for our shoes when we were kids. This was THE ONLY place she'd shop for shoes. My brother said hey why not go to Yorker where Mom always took us? Good advice! I went in and sat down. The saleswoman came over & I told her all of my issues with finding shoes for my problem feet. She went in the back & came right out with 4 or 5 pairs of shoes. I found the perfect shoe that felt as though it had been custom made for me; like walking on a cloud! So in one trip ... SUCCESS!!! I was so upset when I visited this store last. I have been there twice, and the first time wasn't a bad experience. They had shoes wide enough for my feet so I was glad. They weren't the greatest style - but at least they were decent and they fit. I heard the commercials recently, about their, "Great selection and service too," only to discover it was one of the biggest lies! They were busy, it was a Saturday, but I could not get ANYONE to even acknowledge my presence! I waited at the register with the shoes I wanted to be tried on in my hands, only to be told by the cashier when I finally reached him after waiting in the line, that I had to wait for someone else to help me because he was there only for the register. I was ticked-off, to say the least! I put the shoes that I wanted to try on down...and left fuming. I was just so shocked at the lack of regard that was shown for their customers. Be sure to do your research first. There are LOTS of good orthopethic shoes online. The sales person will tell you nothing is better than what they have in store. I will never go back again. I have been scammed once, and that is a good lesson for me. read more

I needed a new pair of work shoes (I'm a Nurse and my old shoes were toast) so I went in to give them a shot. I had heard good things about them and seen their TV ads and saw brands that I would wear. I knew exactly what I wanted when I walked in the door (the men's shoes are immediately as you walk in) and so I pick up two pair that I wanted to try on and was waiting for the sales staff to finish with other customers. As I wandered around waiting (there were only three other customers in there) an older "gentleman" who was waiting on another customer kept staring at me and then he kept repeating loudly that they "had no cash there" and "credit cards were all anyone used there, so there was no cash in the registers", all the time he kept looking at me while the lady he was with talked about her purchases. A Gentleman that had been at the desk on the phone approached me and I asked to try on what I was looking for, and then when I had tried on the size and style I wanted I proceeded to the register with this gentle man to pay IN CASH with American Currency minted by the United States Government and earned at my job as a Registered Nurse, all the while the first "gentleman" continued to stare at me and repeat very loudly "We have no cash in the registers" . I asked for my receipt so that I could prove that I had paid CASH for my shoes and left the store to go home and get ready for the night shift at the hospital. So, that was a rather long way of getting to the point that the paranoia and assumptions made of me without ever even engaging me caused great concern about how people judge others by their appearance and demeanor alone . I did purchase my shoes there to a) prove a point that I was not a thief, but a true customer paying in CASH and; b) I had to work and didn't have time to find another store at that point in the day. My moral and conclusion to this story is I will NEVER darken this "businesses" doorway, nor shall I recommend them (as a matter of fact I have already told this story to EVERY Nurse, neighbor and even casual acquaintances this story and will continue doing so) as a place pf "business" that has one iota of customer service if you don't fit the "Sterotype" of their preferred purchaser. My husband and I stopped by here this am. Hubby has lost weight and needed to be remeasured before purchasing new shoes. He took a seat in the men's section while I went off to explore the women's sale room. After about 10-15 minutes, my husband came into the sale room and said he had not yet been approached by a salesperson. We then returned to the men's section. My husband asked one of the gentleman working in the department if he could have his feet measured. That person said he was helping another customer but summoned another salesperson to help. The second salesperson was not interested in helping us. Although this "gentleman" was well over 6 ft tall, he never bent over or used his hands to manipulate the measuring device. Rather, he used his own feet to shove it in front of my husband. The salesperson again used his own foot to attempt to manipulate (albeit haphazardly and imprecisely) the sliding width indicator! Without attempting to ensure any measurement precision, he announced that my husband was "about" a 9 1/2 or 10 4-E. I then asked the salesperson what shoe styles were available in my husband's extra wide width. His response, as he walked away to wait on another customer, who had arrived after us, was, "Lots of them." Incredulous, my husband put his own shoes back on and we left the store. Although we prefer to support local stores over large chains, we will never return to Yorker Shoes. In fact, after this experience, we drove to Nordstrom at Providence Place where my husband was able to be accurately measured and successfully purchased new shoes. read more

Stepping into Yorker Shoes feels like emerging from a time machine. You have arrived in a local shop, employing local people who focus on ensuring you have a positive customer experience. Yorker carries many brands which a focused especially on problem feet; wide, plantar fasciitis, fallen arches etc. BUT they also carry a wide selection of casual, dress, and athletic shoes for men, women, and children. While they can be very busy at times a simple request at the service center for assistance will put you in the cue for help. In addition to measuring your feet to ensure you receive the correct size they also retrieve to shoes and place them on your feet (Just like a shoe store from the 50-60's). Prices tend to reflect the quality of the brands they stock. The truth is with shoes, you honestly get what you pay for. I consider shoes an investment and when I have "cheaped" out and purchased from the national retailers or department stores I have always regretted my decision as these cheap shoes scuff fast, stitching fails, wont hold polish, or in many cases are very poor quality leather. This is never the case at Yorker Shoes. Most shoes tend to be in the $80-120 range at Yorker and at that price point you get a good value for a quality shoe. We have been shopping here for years and highly recommend them for quality shoes, great customer service, and a reputation for great nostalgic shoe buying. read more

I have been going to Yorker shoes since they were on Academy Avenue in Providence. They are the best. People that work there are very accommodating knowledgeable and personable. Especially Gary who just makes me laugh The whole time I am there. My husband and I love this place and will continue to shop there for as long as we are able to. Highly recommend this store. Of course there are certain times when It is extremely busy and you just need to be patient or find a time when it is not so busy. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!! Unless you are a member of AARP. Then the staff might actually ask if you need assistance. But for the average shopper? Good luck getting anyone to help you, let alone even acknowledge you are in their store. I was in the store for at least 45 min, not 1 sales person asked how I was or if I needed help (there were about 3-4 on duty). When I did seek help, found an older male, think he was the owner actually, based on what I overheard. Asked for my size in diff color, but as he went to check, he checked on 3 other customers before going to the back room. Then when he returned he stopped to help another customer with her selection-- so I had to walk over to him to find out about my question!! His response was so flippant and full of obvious annoyance that I almost walked out right then. But unfortunately they had a particular Clark sandal I was looking for at a reasonable price. When I went to check out, the 15 yr old kid behind the register, obviously the owners son, was completely incompetent, untrained, and void of any rudimentary skills in customer service. He barely squeaked hello, fumbled with my purchase and didn't know the return policy. He also didn't thank me for my purchase as he handed me the bag because he was too distracted by another customer who approached the register. I'm returning the sandals I bought, found them online for $20 cheaper... and at least the online website thanked me for my purchase!!! read more

While I have not always found a pair of shoes i wanted to purchase i have found the service good and the only time I needed to return a pair of shoes it was done with out a hassle. I do drop in periodically to see what they have since I am particular about shoes, wanting ones I can actually walk in all day and they always have a variety of good brands. read more

So disapointed! After seeing the commercials I was looking forward to finding some great shoes, but left empty handed. First, finding an employee to stop chatting with the other employees and wait on me took about 15 minutes. Then every shoe I asked about they didn't have in my size (7 wide). Finally after fitting me with one pair of shoes that fit but weren't what I wanted (not comfortable enough or the look I was looking for, so not worth $124. to me) he told me that was all they had and walked away. I have had sore feet for as long as I can remember, I have been to every doctor there is and they all seem to tell me something different, I pronate, I supinate, I have hypermobile feet with in tact arches, I have no arches... it's tiring hearing so many conflicting opinions. I eventually found my way to Yorker Shoes and am so happy that I did. Their sales associates are very knowledgeable and when working with this one particular woman, she seemed on the fence as what to say about my foot, she was saying all the things I had heard but I could tell that she believed there was more... and rightfully so, all the MD's I've seen have all said something different. So she brought out her boss, who talked with me about my issues and then examined my feet. He was very confident with his take on my mystery feet. He prescribed, I'll be honest that the prettiest pair of sneakers - but I'm desperate, and I'll be damned my feet feel so much better! Finally a shoe that fits and feels comfortable! I agree with other reviews: the shoes are great but the customer service is sub-par. I happened to be running out of the house to pick up some cleaning supplies--was doing housecleaning that Saturday, so I was dressed like a slob. But since I was driving by Yorker, I thought I would stop in because I needed to purchase some new walking shoes. Well, I was never approached and after quite some time I asked a salesperson if they could help me. The man took one look at me and like the other customer, proceeded to help another person who came in at least 15 minutes after I had and assisted that customer. When I inquired if they had the shoes in the size I had asked about, he ran into the back and got them--but his focus was 100% on the other customer. I made the purchase ($130) and had to laugh to myself because after trying on 10 pairs of shoes, the other customer he was assisting did not make a purchase. read more
