Where do I start!? Well, I was nervous-trepidatious-just not sure if we were doing the right thing by sending our son to Camp YATC. I must say, we were blown away- and so was our son! He's already a working actor, so sometimes it's tough to find a space that caters to someone like him- he has some experience-but of course-he's a kid! And has SO much to learn and so much growing to do. When they say that you'll feel at home- they are absolutely correct! Our son was nervous and within 5 minutes of arriving, he was waving us off~ from tears of anxiety to smiles and an eagerness to join and play and learn and experience all that camp YATC has to offer! From top notch coaches, teachers, performers, counselors, and the sweetest-most accepting & creative kids! All set in the breathtaking Santa Cruz mountains. It's a dreamy place where dreams grow and kids can be themselves, accepted, encouraged, and nurtured. We flew in from Washington State for my daughter to attend her very first winter session at Camp YATC, and it was absolutely worth the trip. Since it was an overnight camp, we did not see her until the full week was over, and when we picked her up, she was absolutely glowing! She could not stop talking about the people, the creative process, and the incredible energy of the camp. What really stood out to her was how genuinely kind everyone was. She told me this is the first camp she has ever attended where every camper and every staff member made her feel welcomed, supported, and included from the very beginning. That kind of environment is rare, and it clearly made a huge impact. By the time we got home, she was already begging me to sign her up for four weeks next summer. Our 15 year old just returned from his 5th or 6th time at camp, we can't remember, but between winter film camp and summer camp, he's been there consistently since 2021. His experience this year in the creative track was incredible. The final showcase was magical - these kids learned the ins and outs of filmmaking and their depth of knowledge after only 10 days was pretty amazing. Our kid was sick because of mold and mildew PLUS facilities were in terrible condition at Mt. Cross and the pool was not usable. MAJORITY OF Pictures posted are PRE-COVID and most are from another campsite. Kids are not separated 1/2 cabin for night owls and 1/2 early risers. There is no space or closets for kids to have there belongings off the floor so that is a big issue. Beds are head to head or head to foot in many cabins where bathrooms don't all have locks, don't all have toilet stalls with working locks, and many showers don't work or dribble water out of the tube without a shower head. Food was not as described to us and our kid was starving when did EARLY pick-up. We had TWO sessions and did not receive any refund BUT YATC DID ADVERTISE IMMEDIATELY OUR KID's VACANT BED/ SLOT. There are multiple kids pushed by MOMangers & DADangers to pounce on any visiting "Stars"! As a result MANY KIDS ARE UP AT 5AM BLOWING DRY, NOSILY SHOVING OTHER'S SUITCASES AROUND, AND TALKING WITH ZERO REGARD TO OTHERS SLEEPING! They get up early to pounce on any working professional to get help; actually trying to get someone to make them a star. Again, our kid shoved so much food after pick-up because of terrible food and lack of food, got diagnosed with a Sinus Infection/ Violent allergic reaction to mold, showered immediately upon entering our home and proceeded to sleep over 16 hours! I THREW AWAY CLOTHES AND LINENS BECAUSE I COULD NOT WASH OUT THE MOLD & MILDEW STENCH AFTER MULTIPLE WASHINGS WITH ULTRA STAIN TIDE, CLOROX-2, OXI-CLEAN, VINEGAR, WASHING SODA, BOROX, BLEACH, ETC. Camp YATC has truly blown us away! Of course, I was not in attendance as the Mom. That being said, I can begin by saying that the very FIRST thing my 13 year old son said to me today (after giving me a giant, obligatory hug ;) was: "Mom, I'll do anything if you say I can come back here next summer. I had the BEST TIME EVER!!" We live about 2.5 hours away from the beautiful Mt. Cross campsite in the Santa Cruz mountains and had heard about Camp YATC through a local, dear friend of ours. It had been over a year that my son had been begging me to go I had been in contact with Shawn and Valerie beginning last March with tons of questions. My son has a physical special need and all staff were supportive & compassionate. Shawn and Val both listened graciously to concerns I had regarding this prior, & reassured me during the week by response to a text message I sent; that he was safe, smiling, & thriving. It was at this point, that I felt like their promise to treat all campers as kids of their own -- was genuine & sincere. Sometimes the little things for one person are big things to someone else. My son had nothing but positive feedback to share about his cabin counselor, Ian... that he was attentive, patient, & helpful. Themed dinner evenings seemed to have been all the rage; and surprise on and off Broadway actors participated in mentoring with productive & validating feedback. What a remarkable bonus that was to hear about! The team at YATC has magically blended a smooth structure with room for each individual to be themselves -- simultaneously making it appear easy & joyful. He shared that his most significant takeaway from his time away from home st YATC was a tie. Learning and growing as a performer (in the Musical Theatre track) was at the top - and in large part due to the many experienced, talented, & insightful folks who taught. Right up there were the many new friendships made with campers from all over the world, literally. Upon our return home, I found my son in his room organizing each paper that he had torn off writing contact information for various new buddies -- and also reviewing a notebook chalk full of notes he'd taken during instructional classes. It sounds to me as though they have nailed it at being sure there was equal part "fun" to in "class" - and it stood out to me when I was told that he's never experienced how learning can be FUN in and of itself. Togetherness with other campers whose interests often paralleled his own, he mentioned how fantastic it was to learn from peers simply by getting to know these truly special people. "Mom, I don't know if there were bullet points in the adult paperwork about your child needing to be a kind human being, but I never met anyone who wasn't!" This made my Mom heart especially happy. The showcase held at pick up time was incredible! Each camper has been encouraged (but not forced or required) to stand up in front of the crowd & share their talent. Performers were excited and as an audience member, easy to see how hard they had worked! Something else that stood out was the way campers cheered on one another offering high fives or hugs. If you hadn't known that these kids only met 9 days prior, you sure wouldn't have been able to tell! So sweet to witness this! In my opinion, the sheer number of returning campers year after year says a whole lot about the phenomenal team behind the scenes executing this well oiled operation. It was abundantly evident that the people I came into contact with not only wanted to promote & encourage these kids' passion for the arts // but also, help strengthen self confidence, responsibility, and adventure. I promised my son that I'll do everything possible under the sun to make sure he can return to (what he called his new) "happy place and home away from home." This crew has absolutely nailed it!! My time at YATC in the summer of 2021 was awful. I paid an arm and a leg for a bed that was bound to break at any moment, food that was edible at best, and I got nothing out of it. All I got was the shared trauma from having one of my cabin members deal with a medical emergency. The staff refused to give them their inhaler and did next to nothing to help them. This was a camper they've known since they were young, someone they called "family". Imagine how they would treat a stranger if this is how they treat their "family". Not to mention the Broadway stars promised weren't in person or didn't show up at all. read more

When I asked my 10 year-old daughter her favorite things about camp just now, she said, "everything". Basically, YATC is magical. We picked her up from camp two days ago and I am still floating on Cloud 9 thinking about it all. It was her first experience at sleepaway camp and she not only thrived while there, but had the time of her life! It was so wonderful. She cried joyful tears when she saw us after 10 days and gave us big hugs and then immediately took us on a tour of the campus and forest and introduced us to friends everywhere! All of the kids and counselors were hanging out and everyone was so sweet. We noticed that a common refrain that the kids used when they walked by one another was, "you good?" It was like they were checking in on each other all the time. Such an inclusive, warm environment. The director, Shawn, really sets the tone of the camp with his infectious, fun personality and humor. He is also so supportive of parents and their needs, offering zoom sessions before camp starts and a way to reach him during camp for updates. The counselors are wonderful - very engaged and according to my daughter, they are always hosting fun activities like beading, lip syncing, karaoke, and even just time to sit and talk about your favorite books. When the camp says that they will take care of your child like they were their own, they are telling the truth. The YATC community already feels like a second home for our daughter and our family. I'm tearing up writing this because honestly, my heart is so full knowing all that she got to experience. She has about 20 new best friends (she's currently face-timing with one) and definitely wants to go back next summer. Her Musical Track group performed in a showcase at pickup. The kids were amazing. They shared their talents and were so supportive and loving with one another. It was pure joy to witness them together. The best way for me to sum everything up is to share what happened the morning after we got home... My daughter asked me to tell her a story (she has not asked for this in a long time), so I told her the tale of a mom and dad (in a long ago time) who dropped their daughter off in the forest with no friends (she immediately got where I was going with this and added the word, "yet"). Then I told her about the mom's experience while the daughter was gone and all the things she wondered when she went to pick her up (Would she have lots of emotions from hard situations? Would she want to go home? etc) and how happy she was to see her and know that she had thrived. My daughter asked if she could finish the story and she said that the next morning the girl woke up to find a beautiful dress, which she put on. She heard commotion outside and went out to find a parade. It turned out that the parade was for her, the new Crown Princess. She was being crowned for bravery, friendship, responsibility, and music. Then the princess did one more thing, which was to say "thank you" to her parents, and she was crowned for "gratefulness" too. My heart burst. read more

Our daughter absolutely LOVED her first overnight camp experience at YATC! She loved the staff, ALL the different activities, the master classes - loved learning from Barrett Wilbert Weed (Heathers/Mean Girls) and James Alsop (choreographer extraordinaire), making new friends from around the Bay Area and beyond (in fact a bunch of the MT3 gals are getting together in Berkeley today), and disconnecting from her phone. This is my son's second summer camp and he said it was even better than last year! Its a truly wonderful place where the kids get the chance to learn from experts in the it field of interest (ie actors, choreographer's and Broadway stars). More importantly they make every kid feel welcome and special. We have watched our son come out of his shell and shine at this camp. The staff truly cares and it shows from all the encouragement they provide to everyone actually knowing the kids. Well at least they're not trying to hide anything. I particularly enjoyed the language regarding protecting "the camper". "The camper" was my child. And, my child wanted to call home to speak to their parent. Who they see as being their advocate. YATC's only advocacy or concern is protecting itself as a company, camp or possible cultish entity.. Again, I agree the Camp counselors/teachers were nice and honest people. The camp Director/co-owner who was in charge when my child was there is not an honest person and highly passive aggressive. YATC is a spectacular experience for young people interested in anything to do with the stage or film. The summer camp is great fun and includes master classes taught by superstars. During my kids' first summer, Beyoncé's dance coach taught them dance. Shawn leverages his amazing network to give the kids tremendous learning opportunities. Winter Camp is equally incredible. The kids make short films that Shawn and Val submit to the Cannes Film Festival, and believe it or not, films are accepted to the American Pavilion! It's a life-changing experience for the kids. YATC is the best camp my son has attended. Hands-down. Ever. He went to the summer theater camp, then the winter film camp and is now at the Cannes Film Festival in France, for the premiere of six films, created by YATC students and staff, that are screening at the American Pavilion. This is fantastic and fun! But what is most important is the high level of professionalism, integrity, and care all the YATC staff bring to the table. They encourage the children to be themselves, find and follow their artistic gifts, and grow into compassionate, authentic, whole human beings! (Seriously. What more can a parent want?) If your child is a beginner or well versed in the arts, the curriculum and staff will meet them where they are. At the same time, the camp is about much more than Theater Arts. After the huge impact of Covid, and the ups and downs of the first year of high school, my son went to the summer camp and BLOSSOMED. There was a palpable shift in his energy and self-confidence, and this stayed with him and was renewed at the winter camp. Now in Cannes he is THRIVING. Of course, your child doesn't have to go to Cannes to get this. The camps during the summer and the various weekends are the heart of YATC. It is also important to know that YATC provides scholarships and financial aid, and children can earn their way to camp. We are a family of moderate means, and I can tell you, without a doubt, that I would do everything in my power to make this experience and future camps possible for my son. He is half way around the world and I know he is safe, cared for, supported, encouraged to be himself, learning about much more than the film industry, and having an experience that will stay with him for the rest of his life. My child went to this camp for four years. I am surprised by the woman who gave this camp two stars. She lowered the rating of the camp because she was dissatisfied with the quality of the *campers*!  They were not as talented as she would have liked, and would have preferred an audition-only camp. This is what gives the"drama mamas" a bad name.That being said, this camp has a program for high-schoolers that is audition-only. This camp also makes it very clear:  You get out of it what you put into it.  The more experienced kids inspire and help the beginners, and they are taught to be respectful of learners and accepting of everyone. Some learn that performing is a lot harder than they thought it would be and that it's not for them. Others learn that they have a lot of hard work to do to meet their goals, and for those who discover that, the classes are available, and the staff is ready to teach them. My kid started out as one of those not-so-talented ones. But he learned new things, gained confidence, and he got better. He ended up heading off to college in a BFA Musical Theatre program with an arts scholarship. The classes are better and expectations higher at the high school level; the "fun, magic, and wonder" seem to be better in the lower grades. My kid seemed to feel he was aging out when he was around 15 but now wants to come back as a counselor. This is not a camp where the outcome is putting on a show. It's about developing talents, and it's especially good for kids who are shy or bullied because this camp is all about acceptance and self-esteem. This is a place to let your freak flag fly--every meal is themed, there are dances and swimming and campfires as well as master classes and private lessons. Somehow, Shawn and John always have the pulse on what tweens and early teens are really into each year. PS I started this review in 2013 and I'm just finishing it in 2020. This camp is like no other. It is tucked away in the redwoods outside of Santa Cruz. It is a gorgeous setting with cabins for the campers, a pool , fire pits and plenty of land to hike and explore. What sets this camp apart from all others is the kids are essentially taking master classes from leading actors, directors, writers ect .. in the film and theater world. Your camper gets to focus on what interests them- acting, musical theater, directing or writing. My child leaves each camp with confidence, new friends, and many tools in her tool box to help her pursue her dreams of becoming an actress. Plus she has met some of her favorite Broadway stars! YATC has outstanding year-round programs for young artists interested in the performing arts and filmmaking! My daughter has participated in their summer, winter and spring programs. Her confidence has grown tremendously after working with staff, master teachers and campers. And her interests have really expanded. Very recently, she was an actor in a YATC short film and now wants to write a screenplay! She's had privates with Broadway talents that helped with monologues and singing. She loves working on duets with her cabin pals and acting track campers. It's a creative space where one can easily make friends with kids of similar interests. My daughter has thrived at YATC. The camp's approach to focus on helping all kids develop skills is such a positive approach. Kids are supported and encouraged to explore their interests and to value one another. The Winter Film Camp has been a place for her to experience being part of a short film production and she has attended Winter Film Camp three times as well as summer camps (and online during Covid). The new video of camp captures the variety of ways that campers use creativity in their self-expression. She has gotten chances to explore many aspects of performing arts and last year wrote one of the short film scripts for Winter Film Camp. YATC is, has been and will always be my child's safe space!! From learning how to improve his skills as a camper for 5 years, making friends who are now considered family- to becoming a counselor and learning how to lead campers for many years, and now has added Show Director and Teacher at CampYATC...our family has loved every minute of this! And just because CampYATC comes to end or your camper moves onto college and their professional careers, doesn't mean that the relationship with YATC ends.
