Shrimp and grits, Brussels sprouts, magical roll
    Rae R.

I've just finished my meal and it was the kind of meal where you are full after eating half of it but it's SO GOOD you have to keep going. And then you're stuffed and uncomfortable but don't mind because you just had an amazing meal. Shrimp and grits, Brussels sprouts, and a roll apparently hand-made by angels in heaven. Also, everyone on the staff is friendly, welcoming, and kind. ALSO, the music was great. Big fan of this place.

Your Moms! Not just a good place to eat. This place is living proof that the American Dream is still alive! This wonderful establishment is 100% family owned and FAMILY OPERATED! If you want to feel like you are getting "Moms Cooking" then look no further! Everything is made from scratch and filled with love just like you would want from a home cooked meal. If I were to describe this place with one word, it would be "BEAUTIFUL!" I am not just describing the atmosphere and presentation of the food, the entire picture of what you will experience is something every normal person should want to support and be a part of! Good job "Mom!" We will be back!!! Chicken Fried Steak is

Mom's Cafe in Smithville rocks. It was our first time to eat there. We will be back! Excellent fried fish, Brussel sprouts, sauté fish and crawfish etoufee. The quaint surroundings were decorated with pictures of the owner's grandfather from Morgan City who was a shrimper and oyster man.

The Boudin is really good crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The fried steak is the best I have tried so far and the serving is huge. I highly recommended this place and we will surely come back.

Unfortunately, I didn't make it to mom's during their tenure in Austin. Living out west in the Hill Country it was kinda off my radar. Thankfully, we've all been given a second chance! AND, I've got a better way to get to Smithville avoiding Bastrop for the most part. I had actually planned to visit a few months back; enter my Iffy Lube review where they failed to replace the drain plug and the SUV died a mile later...Today, some car club friends and I had breakfast in South Austin and headed east. Top Tip: First exit in Bastrop turn right on 304. Hang a left on 2571 a few miles later for way better scenery than 71. You're now on the main drag in Smithville! Kinda underrated this town where most Austinites would head west towards the Hill Country...Yall head east once in awhile! Initially, we turned right and headed to Shiner for a brewery tour. Since I had missed my date with your mom (insert laughs), we headed back there for lunch. I loved the Norma Jean stuffed burger; flavorful from the first bite to the last. Add some green chili like myself for a tiny bit of heat. Fries are triple fried? Magically crusted? Fry bae? Plentiful too. Also snuck a delicious piece of fried chicken. Moist with an incredible crust. Friends agreed too, worth the drive. Shopping within walking distance, and just a block over down the road Bone Spirits for some alcoholic souvenirs!

Look, if you showed up at your moms house for dinner you'd expect to be there a while right? The same goes here; this is not by any means fast food but it's worth it to have that fresh home cooked meal. The owners were very friendly and helpful with questions about the menu and the restaurant is very cute with plenty of seating for bigger groups. They did not offer any alcohol when we went, but they did have some really fun sodas to try. I don't drink but my partner was a little disappointed he couldn't order a beer. The food was outstanding. Everything was from scratch and full of flavor. We ordered the gumbo to share, chicken fried steak and I got shrimp and grits. Now your girl here lovvveeesss shrimp and grits so I'm pretty picky and this has got to be in my top five. Perfectly cooked with a little kick like I like it. The chicken fried steak was pretty good, but not my favorite, I think it was the piece of meat as the breading was great. The gumbo made up for it though! If you're driving through this cute little town, be sure to pop in here for a bite!

And they keep the place exceptionally clean. Our server made us feel very welcome even though we showed up just before closing time (they close at 2 pm Tue - Sun and are closed all day Monday). Half the menu was breakfast and the other half was lunch. Beverages were colas, coffee, tea, lemonade and horchata. Lunch here is your typical Mexican lunch menu: tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, fajitas, etc. They also had two specials today: Enchiladas Verde and Quesabirria Tacos. We tried and enjoyed both. The enchiladas had a lot of chicken in them. And while the birria lacked its typical au jus to dip the tacos in, they were still quite authentic and flavorful. The complimentary chips and salsa comes with a bean dip, and with two additional chile options, a spicy red chile and a chile verde. It was nice having all those options. For a healthier option, they also offer a large bowl of tortilla soup with spanish rice on the side. I'm not sure why they choose to open a Mexican restaurant right next to a Mexican restaurant, but the two restaurants are very different and keep different hours. We will come back to try their breakfast, as that appears to be their specialty.

They have gluten free options as well as vegan options and options for those who can have gluten. I went there for three out of the six days that I was on vacation in that area. I had originally wanted a chocolate chip cookie, but they didn't do just regular gluten free ones. However they did have gluten free peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. I'm not a big fan of peanut butter, but I thought I would try it since I was really craving a cookie. I had just the one, and it was so so so good! It didn't taste overly of peanut butter which was a win for me! It had just the right amount of peanut butter and chocolate chips. It was crispy around the edges and chewy towards the middle. I went back that same day and got two more of those cookies. The other days I went I got the same thing. One day, I did try their gluten free apple butter bar which was just as amazing! Service was fantastic! Each day I went, there was someone I hadn't seen before working. Each of them were super nice and friendly. The bakery itself had a very calm ambiance about it. It had a lot of space inside if you wanted to eat your meal or dessert inside or you could get it to go. I also love how Tough Cookie Bakery supports the LGBTQ+ community. There was a pride flag painted outside of the bakery, and that just made me love the place that much more! I would definitely recommend Tough Cookie Bakery in Bastrop. I can't wait to go back once we're back in the area at the end of this month.

The only letdown was finding out that the ice cream isn't homemade or unique to the shop--it's just Blue Bell. Now, as a lifelong Blue Bell fan, I'll never turn it down, but with a place that has so much originality and character, we were hoping for a menu that reflected that same spirit. Still, it's a cute spot and worth a visit for the atmosphere alone.
