You order when you enter and take a seat at one of the tiny booths or long tables. We ordered a lot and were quite full when we finished. We started with the boudin balls and shrimp and grits bites. It's not nice to rush your mom, so don't be in a hurry here! You may be here for quite a spell. But it is all made from scatch, following a long family tradition. This is attested by photos on the wall of two generations prior shucking oysters in the same location, making many of the same dishes. I had the fried oyster po boy. It was excellent. The french bread was freshly baked. The oysters were fresh from the gulf. The remoulade was delicious. I would have preferred a degree of crispiness on the fried oyster, but it was still an outstanding dish. It came with a side of roasted Brussels sprouts that were served room temperature but still had amazing flavor. Their gumbo is made from scratch, and studded with chicken and andouille. I didn't see okra in it, it wasn't spicy, and I didn't detect a lot of filet (sassafras root), but it was a solid gumbo, and I doubt you'll find better in the county. Get it with the pistolles, which is a delicious, glazed roll. For dessert, they have Harvey's ice cream and several flavors of gelato. I recommend the affogato (gelato with a shot of espresso poured over it). We had that with roasted pecan truffle gelato and it was fantastic. We ordered a to go dish before our entree arrived and it didn't come out until we'd finished eating, enjoyed our ice cream, and waited another 15 minutes. So... yeah... don't come here in a hurry. But it's a great spot to hang out for a long meal. It's an historic building with a great look and long tables for large parties. We'll be back. read more

The chicken fried steak is a tender wonderfully flavored steak ... so perfect. The gravy is omg. Pair that with amazing tangy Brussels with brown sauce and dill seasoned mash potatoes. All the seasonings, coatings and sauces are just spot on in their flavors and oh how they compliment the food. The Shrimp, andoullie and grits is, as Justin Wilson would say: "Wondermous" Also, when they ask you if you want rolls... SAY YES!! Their rolls are like donuts and flash fried!! Heaven!! I have always loved Your Mom's, but it had been a hot minute since I was able to eat there again because life happens. Anyway, I was thrilled to finally eat there again after four years. First off, this place is always busy, so that should tell you something. Don't expect to get your food quickly, but don't let that put you off! The food is beyond amazing and great food is worth waiting for. I always get their gumbo, and it is so good! I also had their pot roast and it was the most delicious pot roast I have had. I had a big chunk of meat that was the most tender and tastiest bit of beef that I have ever had. I would have like a bit more veggies with it, but that is just a personal thing. I would still recommend it 100 percent! I do get my food to go because I don't really like sitting in my restaurants. (I order it online.) Food is always bagged up nicely, and I like the fact that they text me when my food is ready to be picked up so I know exactly when to leave. I've just finished my meal and it was the kind of meal where you are full after eating half of it but it's SO GOOD you have to keep going. I cannot order anything other than the Chicken Fried Steak, which is so good. It is properly breaded, and the gravy is delicious. Best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas. I always get cheesy grits and brussel sprouts. My wife got the Shrimp and Grits and our son, hamburger with cheese, bacon, and fries. Our neighbors got the Chicken Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Chicken, which they both loved. All this is done by the wonderful husband and wife team who own Your Mom's. The owners are nice as can be Recently, every time I come, they are out of menu items. There's about 10 things on the menu. How does this keep happening? It's not that hard. Secondly, you never know what they are out of until after you stare at the menu and try to order. Today no chicken, catfish or pork chop. Make a sign! Stop being out of things! I also forgot they have milkshakes, oh wait, there's no sign for it.... They started specials, great. Put them on a sign, because no one says anything about them. Out of straws. Out of forks. I know they are doing some things right...but it's time to get some help running the show because it's taking it's toll. This is the issue. Family can only work so much and can't do it all. We have SO few good places to eat around here and this is another I'm going to cross off the list, I hope it turns around but won't be back any time soon. read more

AND, I've got a better way to get to Smithville avoiding Bastrop for the most part. Top Tip: First exit in Bastrop turn right on 304. Hang a left on 2571 a few miles later for way better scenery than 71. You're now on the main drag in Smithville! Kinda underrated this town where most Austinites would head west towards the Hill Country...Yall head east once in awhile! Initially, we turned right and headed to Shiner for a brewery tour. Since I had missed my date with your mom (insert laughs), we headed back there for lunch. I loved the Norma Jean stuffed burger; flavorful from the first bite to the last. Add some green chili like myself for a tiny bit of heat. Fries are triple fried? Magically crusted? Fry bae? Plentiful too. Also snuck a delicious piece of fried chicken. Look, if you showed up at your moms house for dinner you'd expect to be there a while right? The same goes here; this is not by any means fast food but it's worth it to have that fresh home cooked meal. The owners were very friendly and helpful with questions about the menu and the restaurant is very cute with plenty of seating for bigger groups. They did not offer any alcohol when we went, but they did have some really fun sodas to try. I don't drink but my partner was a little disappointed he couldn't order a beer. The food was outstanding. Everything was from scratch and full of flavor. We ordered the gumbo to share, chicken fried steak and I got shrimp and grits. Now your girl here lovvveeesss shrimp and grits so I'm pretty picky and this has got to be in my top five. Perfectly cooked with a little kick like I like it. Me and my fiancé were deciding on what to eat for dinner & I told him I been wanting to try this place in Smithville so we went! I was so excited being new to the area about 15 min away no biggie. Dinner hours started at 6 we got there right on time, owner greeted us & asked if we've been there before, told us they are known for their chicken fried steak. Got menus so sat down. Booth and area was clean and free or debris. Bathrooms were clean, fresh and super cute decorations. They had water & iced tea both for selections of beverages. Menu was short & sweet. I ordered the Cajun fried catfish with smoked gouda grits & glazed brussel sprouts and my fiancé ordered the chicken fried chicken with fries and a house salad. I had a nice chat with the chef, being a foodie I told him everything was amazing. Husband and wife team everything was freshly made to order not long wait at all. Everything was great, the brussel sprouts were so good I wish there was more on the plate but other than that great place to dine, so glad we decided to check it out. As of 05/10/24, they are BYOB and have some of the best food in Smithville. Take your cooler and some playing cards because the place is lightly staffed (family), and they get busy. Some of the best dishes can sell out, but I've never had anything here that wasn't awesome. Blackened artichokes and the giant pork chop are currently my favorites. read more

I wanted to like this place, I really did. We were staying in Bastrop for the weekend and decided to eat here our first night. It was #1 on Yelp for dinner and everyone raved in their reviews about it, so we headed on in. On the outside window, there was a sign that said "we are not a fast food service restaurant, we make our food with time and love." Okay, cool. I get it. It'll take a little longer to eat. No biggie. We walked in and filed in line behind the people who walked in in front of us. We looked for a menu and the only one we saw was on the wall behind the register on a letter board in small, jumbled up letters. I had looked online before we came, so I knew what we were going to get and after scanning the menu for a bit, I found it all on there. The lady at the counter taking our order was very sweet and helpful. She offered to get my son some fried catfish instead of chicken since that's what he had wanted but didn't want an adult portion. We paid and she told us she would get our glasses to us after she washed some. Okay cool. So we look over the restaurant and there's only a few seats empty around one table that has leftovers from another group on it. So the lady at the counter has someone come clean it off rather quickly and we're able to sit down. At this point, I started feeling warm. It's a September day in Texas, so it's going to be hot, so I just chalk it up to the A/C just not being able to catch up with the weather outside and the amount of people inside. My husband and son went to get our drinks and they were out of sweet tea. No biggie. I'll get soda instead. And we wait. And wait some more. And some more. We start looking around and noticing that most of the tables around us don't have food in front of them. Uh oh. "The food will be worth it" we tell ourselves. It'll be fine. More waiting. My husband gets so uncomfortable with the heat that he goes to stand outside. An hour and a half (not an exaggeration) later, our name is called and we go up to the counter. The food was okay at best. My husband got the chicken fried steak. The gravy needed salt and the brussel sprouts had pretty much no flavor to them. I got the pot roast and it was okay flavor-wise but the mashed potatoes had way too much pepper on them. In the end, we won't be back. Another batch of tea was never made in the 2 hours we were there, the A/C isn't powerful enough to combat the kitchen being in the dining room, and no one ever came to our table to check on us. read more

Ok, I hate to be dramatic, but Your Mom's has the absolute BEST shrimp and grits that you have ever tasted. Period. Their Shrimp Picayune & Grits is so incredibly flavorful, with beautiful glazed shrimp and andouille sausage served over a generous bed of oh-so-delicious grits made with smoked Gouda. The spicy sauce that is drizzled over is a sensual experience. My husband had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and their famous Brussels sprouts. It may sound like something you've had before, but he said it was anything but common. We half-heartedly offered each other a bite but didn't want to give away any of the goodness we were each enjoying. If you're anywhere near Smithville, you'll want to hit up Your Mom's.
