Ensure and confirm that the products you prefer are being used. This was the best hair appointment that I ever had. The owner and everyone was so friendly and accommodating. They have a very broad range of business hours so that you could even get your hair done after work during the week. I don't know what people were talking about in the negative reviews because this place was fantastic. I will always be going back. I got a hair Installation and the girl who did my hair was Kenya. She did an amazing work of art on my hair. She is truly gifted. She washed my hair so gently that I fell asleep for a bit. Lol. The blow dry was gentle too. She has the touch. When she braided my hair, the braids didn't hurt and leave me with a headache but they were still secure. It doesn't even feel like I have an extra layer, feels and looks so natural. She sewed in my hair quickly and perfectly, styled it and I walked out looking fabulous. I will advise everyone to go to ysb salon if you want an amazing experience in a beautiful salon and great quality of work. The owner, Betty, was very kind and intuitive when she did my hair consultation and stayed long past closing hours to support me as a new client. Betty who is the owner is so professional and polite. Monica is who did my hair. The salon was clean and sort of a cozy little place. She is a awesome stylist and very professional yet funny. I am so deceived and hurt. I went to this salon to remove a weave and have my NATURAL hair blown out. They relaxed my hair and I didn't have any idea. They seemed to have mixed a relaxer into my "deep conditioner". I was even shown a menu where I could select which "natural deep conditioner" I wanted, and I assure you it did not mention a RELAXER! A true nightmare. I am livid. LIVID. My hair is long and is probably going to fall out because I have a blonde ombre. I have spent YEARS growing out a relaxer and becoming natural. YEARS! I loved my natural hair... now it is GONE! I cannot believe someone would do this WITHOUT permission?! They should lose their license over this... It could have been fatal if I was allergic to the host of chemicals that are in relaxers. This is a horrible thing to do to someone. I am beyond disgusted. UPDATE October 2015: I am growing out this relaxer and had to cut my hair short as it all did begin to break off due to this relaxer. Besides being disgusted, I am saddened by this... not just for myself, but for the woman who did this to me. This type of behavior carries a lot of weight and implications ... I loved the Moroccan oil treatment! My hair has been strong after, hardly any shedding and no breakage! The lady who set my appointment was very friendly and informative. My stylist was really gentle and did a great blow out. She didn't scorch my scalp, not once! The salon is super clean as well. If you have natural hair do not go to this salon. They say they know how to care for natural hair but they are awful. The hairdresser burned my hair and caused sever heat damage. After only one time I have permanent heat damage after a blow out and my hair is now breaking off. Avoid this hair salon. read more

So disappointed with my experience at this salon especially because I was looking forward to first "blow out" in NYC to be amazing and so impressed with their price list I found online! *This was my very first visit here & I was a walk-in* 1. I asked for a blowout w/deep conditioning...my hair was washed, deep conditioned, then rollers came out... I was short for time as I was only in Harlem for a few hours so I requested just a regular blow out, not know apparently that this requires rollers and that the price would double! Not once did anyone explain this to me until after it was time to pay. 2. I was then asked to move to a different chair once I requested just a regular blowout, literally the ONE stylist that was there completed THREE other women hair before mine all because I requested my hair to be blow dried and not sit under the dryer which still ended up costing me a WASTED 2 hours that I did not have-I was on the verge of tears. There was another stylist in the salon doing hair when I first arrived at the salon but she left. 3. Once I got in the chair the woman doing my hair was pretty fast with drying it but NOT ONCE did she ask me how I wanted it styled or put any moisturizer in my head! She honestly did not talk to me the entire 3 hours I was there She burned my scalp and yanked my head around. All of this happening after I sat patiently in a different chair for 2 hours waiting for my turn, just for the service this entire time to be absolutely terrible. 4. When it was FINALLY over and time to pay I had been in the salon for over 3 hours just for a wash and blow out and was asked to pay $55 when the prices on the list said $30...+$10 for deep conditioner so it should have been $40... I still gave her a tip (because I've worked in customer service before) and it came out to $60 & she never even said thank you or anything It was an absolutely horrible experience and my hair is not soft, it's flat & looks like something I could have did in my mirror. Save your hair and your wallet. These ladies burned my hair off completely during the blowout. I had hair down to my shoulders before they torched my follicles. I came out smelling like I just came out of a burning building. My hair kept falling out for weeks and upon returning to my regular stylist I learned I had to chop my beautiful hair all off up to my ears. Avoid this place like the plague. I've visited this salon on two separate occasions (wash, set, blow out). Stark differences. First visit: Annabelle did an INCREDIBLE job. I've actually never had a blow out that was so efficient with minimal heat usage. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. I told Annabelle that I would definitely be returning, as her customer service and hair care skills were on point! Visit 2: Last minute walk-in a little over an hour before closing (they receive their last clients an hour before closing). Annabelle was backed up with clients, so I let the second/other "stylist" do my hair. BAD IDEA. HORRIBLE IDEA. While one would imagine that the two stylists offer similar services- this was not the case. Quite contrary to my first experience, I was SHOCKED at how MUCH heat she used, and the subsequent BURN/HEAT DAMAGE to my hair. I use the term burn specifically here, as I could smell my hair burning. When I told the "stylist" this, she basically ignored me (nonchalantly asking if it was too much heat and telling me that her daughter also complains about the heat). I ended up having to tell her to stop the blow out. It was ridiculous and shocking at how unfazed she was at the smell of burning hair. NEVER AGAIN. As much as I would love to go back to this salon- for Annabelle's services only, obviously- I'm very reluctant to do so. Ok, so where do I start. I happened upon YSB through trial and error since moving to Harlem. I kept getting services where the Stylists did one thing well, but lacked in another area i.e. washed good, but didn't trim well, or nice but spoke no English, or conveinantly located, but over priced. I would just trek back to the familiar (Brooklyn) until my regular lady's shop had a fire. So glad I remembered and revisited here Juana was very courteous, spoke enough English to communicate w/me re: services, and gave a chic one of the best shampoos I've had in a long time. She was even mindful/considerate of the amount of pressure applied for my comfort level. BINGO! This was the test for me as far as making this place my go to (The Wash Is Everything:). Kudos to the owner MS Betty too. She was very attentive, addressing all my concerns via the message portal on their website. The ladies that work there are professional and knowledgeable ...especially about my type of hair... curly! They can even roll your hair instead of blow dry ... This has been the worst experience ever in my life. First of all, if you don't speak Spanish, don't even bother going there. Second I came for highlights and color and I ended up looking terrible. Way lighter then I expected or wanted to. I wanted a dark brown with high lights and I left with a golden/red/honey looking color, awful. Everyone in there doesn't even care, they don't even look at your picture when you are trying to show them the preferred color etc. When she washed my hair, I felt like she is scratching my scalp off, it was hurtful rather than made me feeling good. While she was doing my highlight, she was putting in rollers and working with someone else-she forgot about me and I had to keep on reminding her. I have never left anywhere without tipping regardless how bad the service or food was but why would I pay a tip when I have to go home in tears. Totally not worth it. read more

Not organized or professional. I booked an appointment online in advance. Got to the salon. Was greeted by a cleaning lady that did not know who Betty was ( the owner). Berry was not there and I was in a salon with a lady that spoke little English. I spoke to a Kenya and she apologized and said she would come. The salon opens at 9 and first appointment is at 9:15. Why isn't a beautician there. Yes things happen but when i booked my appointment my phone number was attached I could have contacted. I am going to another Salon where opening hourS is opening hour and someone is there to work. I left I should not have to wait or get someone else I did not ask for. I understand she tried to help and I guess fix their mistake but I take service serious and am not fond. Atleast six years ago I came here and had two great experiences. I needed a wash and set and didn't want to truck to my usual girl in Brooklyn before work. Thank god I have a back up plan. Heading to Eddys where i several girls are there can at least start to wash and set my hair so the lady I do go to can style. I won't be coming back. I am so disappointed because I read so much on YELP. Mixed reviews honestly- almost balanced good and bad. But that's not good to be inconsistent with your business. COMPLETE NIGHTMARE!!!!!! I have NEVER had such a HORRIFIC AND UNPLEASANT experience at a salon IN MY LIFE!!!! I really, really wanted to like this place and call it my new salon because its close to home and the salon is very clean and chic, but I don't think they specialize in black hair (mind you I have very short hair and the style is complex). It's SO HARD finding a great salon in Harlem that doesn't over charge! Completely unprofessional! My first time there, I had to go back 3 days in a row RIGHT AFTER my very 1st visit because they had no idea how to style my hair how I asked and they needed to correct their work. I had an appointment with Kenya on a Monday evening and when I arrived she was ready for me. First impression of the salon was "wow" this place is so fabulous. It's clean, signage is clear (it was easy to find) and everything had a place. There was a place to wash hair. There was a place to dry hair. There was a place to style hair. And then I had to use the restroom. The restroom was so clean you could (and I never would) eat off the floor. This place was amazing. Kenya was fantastic. She was pleasant and professional. She did an exceptional job on my hair. My hair experience at YSB was the best ever and I can't wait to return. The owners should be very proud of their business and I encourage anyone that is looking for a great, wonderful and all around excellent place to get their hair done to please visit YSB in Harlem.
