I've been to Renaissance Curls 3x in the last year. I've received silk presses and cuts by Zoe and two-strand twists and a cut by Laura. On all occasions, the professionalism and care were outstanding. I travel an hour from Brooklyn to get my hair done here, since they are the only people I trust. Zoe is absolutely amazing in regards to her knowledge of hair care. She has taught me so much about my hair texture and the upkeep. I recommend this salon to all my natural hair girlies. First time going to Renaissance Curls and I can express enough how great my experience was. The atmosphere was pleasant. Place was clean. They clean and wipe down each station wherever a customer changes posts. They tell/show you each product they use and explain what it's used for. Charlene washed my hair and gave a quick tutorial on my hair and what it needs. She also did my moisture treatment. Charlene and Jaylyn detangled and and blow dried my hair. Zoë trimmed and styled my hair. It was a little costly but I had a lot done and I left a very nice tip. Why not! Service was amazing. Every step was done professionally, respectfully and nicely. Conversations were interesting and fun. They have SNACKS! I was seen on time. All of the ladies were extremely nice. Black owned. I will definitely be back. read more

I truly love this salon. I have been going to Weena since 2019. The customer service is top tier. I usually go for trims and color re touches. Her team is gentle with my hair that it has actually grown more. Weena has trained her so well. They are all professional, kind, and patient. My experience was excellent. I had a flat iron and trim. My stylists wasn't scissor happy which is what I like. She knew I wanted to retain some of my length. I was surprised at how easily she was able to detangle my hair and how much care she took into detangling it. She has me go under the dryer before flat ironing which was smart because it reduced the amount of direct heat on my hair. My flat iron lasted for a long time. I believe it was technique but also it may have been the time of year I got it done. I was offered a snack which was a nice treat that the salon offered. The place was clean. I also had a steam treatment added to my wash. I would go again. They did an fantastic job caring for my hair. read more

I want to give huge praise to Jalyn at Renaissance Curls with how great she was with my child. My child just turned 7 and has ADHD and anxiety, and has always been terrified of having her hair professionally done or even washed. Jalyn introduced herself to my child and was very warm and welcoming so my child trusted her. I thought we would just start with a consultation but my child was so comfortable that we were able to do a wash right there. Jalyn told my child everything that would happen, let her touch the water and the steam first, told her "I'm just turning the water on now; I'll let you know before it goes on your hair." My child was actually loving her hair being washed. I highly recommend if you have any kids, to have them go to Jalyn. read more

I made my daughter an appt at this salon, per a recommendation I received from her Godmother. I MUST emphasize that my daughter was 6 when she had her first appt. Six with a really thick head of "past bra strap" length hair. She also happens to be extremely tender-headed. Zoe was honestly more patient than I was ready to receive. I was Firstly shocked that they serviced a 6 yr old, because most professional salons do not. But then the level of grace and patience they all showed me and my daughter was truly appreciated. She received a wash, cut and twists the first time she went. And she was soo happy with the end result. We've been back once since her first appt., and I do plan on making Renaissance Curls her every 6-month go to for her maintenance trims. read more

This salon is all about aesthetic, that's it. My experience here was very poor. I booked an Olaplex reconstruct. My hair was washed and during the process the stylist consistently urged me not to use any product but water in my hair. After the treatment, I noticed that my damaged ends weren't clipped. When I brought this to the stylist's attention, I was told there would be an extra charge. I refused. When it was time to braid my hair, another stylist came over with extremely long nails. My hair is thick and it was poorly handled. She did not manage my hair and did not think to section/detangle it or provide any basic hair care management. Instead, she made a few unsuccessful attempts to braid my hair and eventually settled by slapping loads of mouse on to create two lumpy, obnoxious, cornrows, leaving my head hurting (by the way I am NOT tender headed). While my hair was being braided, I was "consulted" for 5 minutes by another woman who was preoccupied with another client and hurriedly told me that color services would not be available to book for the next 4 months. I was basically overcharged ($80) to wash my hair with olaplaex and put in two lumpy, wet cornrows. It was done so poorly that I had to go in the bathroom to take it out and put my hair in a ponytail. I wish I spoke up, but I left feeling defeated. As I walked out of the salon the stylists could see that I took out my braids. No one said anything. On my way out Weena looked at me, smiled, and gave a perfunctory "have a nice day". read more

I made an appointment at RC during a visit to NYC and am very glad I did. The shop is very well-decorated and clean. It feels super cozy. I saw Alex, an assistant, for a wash and twist. I'm a niqabi and was a little nervous about going there, wondering if I would get accommodations. I was gladly surprised at the welcoming atmosphere of the salon and accommodations, did not feel uncomfortable even once. Service was also great, Laura got my curls looking all juicy and defined, gave me a nice trim and product recommendations. Weena is a consummate professional and a natural hair expert! She turned my mane into an exquisite work of art! I came in with split ends galore and instead of taking off too much as some stylists are prone to do, she focused solely on the split ends. The salon and the aesthetics was nice but the experience was horrible. I booked to have Laura wash, cut and style my hair but she was too busy to even wash my hair. Another lady washed and conditioned and I proceeded to wait under a steamer for Laura to finish with another client. I found out later that I was charged an additional $20 on my bill to wait for Laura under the steamer which was no fault of my own. Next, Laura says she prefers to cut my hair wet and when I objected she says it's best to see split ends. Although I had my hair trimmed about 5 months ago she begins to chop off about 5-6 inches of hair. She wets and styles my hair with products back at the bowl and I sit under the dryer. Finally, my hair is dried and the owner comes to me because Laura is too busy and asks me if I want a shape. I told her this is what I thought I was getting and paying for but at this point she recommends that I shape my hair another time. This salon was on the cutitkinky recommended list but I do not feel they followed the philosophy of cutting hair. They also overbooked and just seemed to care about the money. read more

This review is based upon my experience with the owner, Weena. I booked a wash and go cut with Weena during peak COVID in 2021. I paid close to $300 for my cut with tip included. My complaint is that she has no way to take criticism on board and the service she provided did not warrant the high price. I also lost a lot of hair during her styling, although I did not mention this. This is unacceptable full stop. Weena also chose the wrong products to style my hair and as a result it was left very frizzy and undefined after a lot of manipulation. The real issue came in during her second cut after styling. She took me out of the dryer with my hair still wet. I pointed this out to her at the time but she seemed unconcerned. I also felt very uncomfortable remaining at the salon because her tight space was beginning to fill with new clients. And, frankly, she seemed more interested in catering to a client with a loose texture receiving a color service that arrived after me. It was clear that Weena's knowledge and comfort zone was greater with this client. While her knowledge was not in itself a problem, most beauty schools and salons do not cater African/ African diaspora highly textured hair, her pricing should reflect this. I tipped Weena well in spite of the poor service I received and perhaps because of it to counter what I felt was a clear negative bias on her part. In hindsight I regret this. I have since reached out to Weena at this salon to no avail. Book somewhere else. read more
