What a gem of a restaurant! I can't believe tonight was the first time we tried Fukusuke, but I am so glad we did. It is a cozy, family run restaurant with wonderful fresh sushi. We had miso soup, and tried the dan-san roll and a California roll- all were delicious! The restaurant isn't fancy or stuffy, just wonderful food, and wonderful service. We dine here regularly and decided to try the Fukusuke Special Combination ($45.95) for the first time. It included choice of chicken teriyaki or burdock with beef (we got the burdock, so flavorful!), salad, miso soup, broccoli appetizer (I think this was a complimentary add on from the adorable owner Mama San), full sized tempura, 3 piece California roll, albacore sashimi, entree, and 1 piece mochi. We didn't realize how generous the portions were, so also ordered the tonkatsu for our party of 2, which I had to take home. We came in for dinner this past summer and LOVED Fukusuke! The service and hospitality is great-- it feels like you've been welcomed into their home to enjoy a beautiful and delicious, authentic Japanese meal. It's a little small, so it can fill up quickly and get crowded, but it adds to the charm. The fish is fresh and all of the entrees were fantastic. This was easily one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. When we arrived, there were two empty tables available, yet we were offered the only table by the door -- the exact spot I had already said we did not want. That should have been the first red flag. After being seated, we were completely ignored. No placemats, no water, no greeting -- nothing. We had to ask just to be acknowledged so we could order, and even then the staff acted like we were an inconvenience. What made it worse was watching them clear two other tables, seat new families there, and fully set those tables up -- all while we were still sitting there with zero service. It was obvious we were not a priority at all. The only moment anyone looked our way was when we finally got up and walked out -- and not a single person attempted to apologize or stop us. That level of indifference says everything. Absolutely unacceptable service. We will never return. read more

Fukusuke Japanese Restaurant is worth the drive!! Came to this neck of the woods to celebrate a friends birthday. We went to a couple of local breweries and the outdoor mall. We decided to do a night cap and enjoy some delectable sashimi and sushi rolls. This family owned business was very welcoming and humble. Momma-San welcomed us all in and was very understanding with 2 little toddlers. Service is 100% Food is very authentic especially their home made desserts! We had high expectations based on other reviews. But, we didn't get what we ordered. The sashimi was okay but not outstanding. Other places serve larger portions and fresher fish and provide real wasabi and shredded radish with sashimi. The edamame was okay. The rice was good and plentiful. The California roll was made with artificial crab. This should have been disclosed, at minimum. The miso soup was okay. The salad was shredded cabbage, but at least the dressing was on the side. We didn't get one entree and received some other dish that had a lot of cabbage and artificial crab and some chicken with rice noodles. It was extremely salty and we didn't eat much of it. Considering we paid $112 for a dinner that was not very good, we won't go back. read more

Giving a 5-star review because this is a cute mom and pop shop with SO many frog decorations (I love frogs). I got a salmon roll, which was fairly standard but was covered in sesame seeds. I love sesame seeds, so I wasn't bothered by that at all. While the roll was fairly small, that didn't really make me dislike it since it actually felt like quite a bit of salmon stuffed into a small roll. Not a lot of rice too, which is good! Star of the show was the slice of cheesecake. SO light and refreshing because of the added tangerine bits. While the cheesecake didn't have an actual crust, the graham cracker crumbs acted as the crunch! It was a fairly unique slice of cheesecake I've had since I've never seen one with tangerine slices incorporated into it. I can tell that this acts as a nice community spot, especially since someone came in to chat with the owners about her grandchild. How cute :) read more

Authentic Japanese food! Two sweet ladies-- I think one is the obasan (grandmother), and her daughter. They were so kind, gracious, hard working and sweet. Best chicken katsu I've had (breaded chicken cutlets). Huge portion, super light, juicy, tender and crispy. Don't forget to squeeze the lemon on it. Delish! Huge bento portion-- hubs got the tempura and chicken teriyaki. Comes w/ salad, delicious miso soup, and a cucumber and cabbage appetizer. Great value for $24 for dinner. Tempura was a generous portion and crispy. Cheesecake was light. Grandma said she made it and it has cream cheese and soy milk. Tastes homemade and everything tasted like it was made with love. I liked the Chicken Terriaki, and the Sashimi platter was excellent. For a restaurant in a strip mall, it surprises with it's quality and food and enjoyable Japanese ambience. It's small, so you might need to wait, and it won't be a fine dining or full restaurant experience, but is worth it. read more

We had a wonderful dinner here. The owner is so friendly and caring. There was plenty of parking and no wait time when we went. They started us off with miso soup and some side dishes. We all enjoyed the cucumber side dish. The salmon roll and spicy tuna roll were ok, light in flavor and small portion. The sukiyaki was very filling and flavorful. As you can see from the photo, they give a large bowl with raw meat that cooks in the broth. The meat was cut thin and tender. The glass noodles were chewy and slightly sweetened by the sukiyaki base. They give rice on the side too. Lastly, we got the homemade cheesecake. It is light and jiggly for a cheesecake, perfect for dessert after a filling meal. I highly recommend you come here if you are in the area. read more

Unpretentious Japanese restaurant in Larkspur CA [Marin County] We called to make a reservation... I could hear the other end of the line as my hubby called to make sure they could accommodate our party. The voice on the other end seemed frazzled and kept repeating what she just heard, a sweet, elderly voice with a thick Japanese accent. "Yes," my hubby replied... "that's (a party) of 1-6" (sixteen). Then she asked if we wanted to sit in one table as my hubby responded that it's okay to split us up if they couldn't accommodate us together. The restaurant reopened at 4:30p for dinner. We arrived a little early, maybe 10 mins sooner but the restaurant was open, there were no doors but open air entry using "noren" (Japanese fabric dividers) that hung on the doorway. We walked in and we can see why the woman that took our reservation was frazzled. The restaurant was very small with just 9 or 10 table seatings. At quick glance it was furnished with glossy wooden tables with matching backless wooden benches with thin cushions padded in geometric and flowery fabrics. The walls were decorated with a few pieces of Japanese art adding a touch of colors to the walls. Then a Japanese elderly lady came out to welcome us... then shortly after the sushi chef came out to greet us as well. It looked like a mom/son team that ran the restaurant. It took a while to complete everyone's order, which was understandable. We were the only ones there for a long while... and there were 16 of us! We were split into 3 tables which actually worked out nicely... the kids in one table (6), young adults in another (6), then the 4 of us adults. The menu was smaller than most other Japanese restaurant I've been to. My salmon teriyaki was delicious, the salmon was a huge piece and my dinner was filling. The miso soup had plenty of silky tofu cubes in delicious broth. Overall, we had a pleasant first time experience here. It felt like walking inside and visiting a Japanese home for dinner. The "Mom" had a sparkling personality and humorous charm in the way she chatted with us and also in the way she heads service and front house when she answers the phone or gave instructions to her helper. Loved this hole in the wall restaurant that I would never have heard of if it wasn't for my gf. It's completely family owned by a Japanese family. The grandma is the pain waitress who is adorable and her son is the main chef. The entire shop is small but has about 10-15 tables. I love that a lot of the menu is hand written. The entire shop made me feel like I was back in Japan eating at a small shop. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. My GF and I ordered: 1. Beef Sukiyaki: SO DELICIOUS! The portion is huge and you can definitely share it with 2 people. I ordered the beef raw which cooks in the broth. The veggies and the sauce is amazing and goes really well with rice. Also got the egg raw which normally you're supposed to dip the beef in and then cook it in the broth but instead we poured it into the soup. Loved this dish. 2. Eel Roll: Delicious with really fresh and flavorful eel. 3. Salmon Nigiri: Very fresh salmon! Loved it! It's $1 than just sashimi and you get 5 instead of 5 pieces of salmon. Cute very Japanese place with real Japanese people and vibe. Food was tasty but portions were not what I expected. Everything was small. I ordered the Chicken bento dinner for $26. Menu shows tempura as one of the items included but NO tempura was served!! WTF?? Asked WTF and only get big smile. In addition I ordered a Salmon/Alaska roll and it was tiny. Tiny. Barely filled on $45 worth of food. No drinks. No dessert. Go for the people, the authentic side dishes and vibe but not the value the old menu photos show. Prices went up 30% since those photos were taken. Attached are the current menus and prices. I hope they realize these truths and up their game. SWEET FAMILY RESTAURANT As a person who grew up in Japan, Fukusuke feels so much like home. The decor, the homey authentic food and the adorable mama-san who reminds me of my obasan (grandma). This is not asian fusion, just traditional Japanese food made with care. I had the shiosaba (grilled mackeral), very generous portion, which was absolutely delicious. Comes with miso soup, pickled cabbage (tsukemono), and bowl of fresh, hot rice. I'm actually craving it right now as I write about it!! There are many sushi/"japanese" restaurants around, but very few are owned and run by Japanese people. I can always tell. This one is the real deal. read more
