I came today on Christmas Eve without an appointment hoping to have a wash and blow for the holidays. I was in luck and was seated straight away at the basin for my wash. The stylist working on me was Yisette and she was very sweet, checking if I was okay with the shampoo pressure. I like a good thorough wash when I have my hair blown out so I was happy with the pressure. She told me her English wasn't great and my Spanish could be better, but she definitely made sure at all times I was happy. I was so happy with the blow out. S was very gentle. At many Dominican salons it is common for your hair to be pulled quite roughly with the heat turned all the way up, but she was gentle and also not excessive with the heat. Only at the front and top of my hair was the heat a little more but also that is where my hair tends to be more stubborn to smooth so that was perfect. She finished off with the iron and I think it was the owner who came to check her work to make sure it was perfect. I had a horrible experience at this salon. I'm only sharing this because I just recently watched a YouTube video and I think the same thing happened to me that happened to this girl. I went to this salon after being natural for 3 years solid. Not once had I straightened my hair in that time. I, myself am a hairstylist. I wanted to relax and let someone else wash, blow dry and style my hair. I walked in on a random day and was greeted by the owner, she was nice. We spoke, I told her what I wanted and she told me no problem. She took me to the bowl, washed my hair and asked me if I wanted a "treatment". She showed me the product in this bottle and told me that it would help keep my hair silky and soft. Now I know my hair, and there's NOTHING that can do that besides chemicals but I let her do it. She placed the "treatment" in my hair and placed a cap on my head and sat me under the dryer......fast forward now, I'm washed out and my hair looks like my normal fro. She starts to blow dry my hair, super roughly( I could tell the texture made her uncomfortable ). I'm not at all tender headed or have a sensitive scalp so I sucked it up. What bothered me most was the fact that she used a fine tooth - rat tail comb to blow out my hair. Then she put grease in my hair to flat iron. Listen, after the fact my hair was stiff as a board but I kept it pushing. I later went home and realized some of my hair still had kink and some of it was super straight! I mean abnormally straight. I washed my hair and it didn't revert back to the luxurious fro that I once had. Some parts were super straight and others were kinky. I was extremely devastated. Weeks had passed and my hair did not revert back. I was so devastated that I had to cut my hair all off because of someone else's stupidity! I cried while I cut my hair. Fast forward now, a few years later to today and I watched a hair salon horror story on YouTube(iAmTraeh) and the Yulaine name looked familiar but it only clicked when she mentioned that the salon moved to Utica Avenue! The owner had snuck a texturize in the woman's hair and said that it was a "treatment". I literally just shed a tear because at the time I was young and naive and I didn't know how to speak up for myself because all In all I'm not confrontational and I have respect for my elders. Horrible experience at this establishment. First and last time! She snuck in a texturizer and just ruined my damn hair, it didn't even stay "straight" for a full day. Yulaine Spa not only is esthetically beautiful but the staff is amazing. They treat each customer that I have seen with open arms and respect. I came to do my hair on my birthday; the boss and staff played a birthday song and sang to me. I needed a makeover for a gala. Given I try to shop small and local, I found Yulaine Spa after reading good reviews. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. The salon is bright, upscale and fun. The makeup artists was friendly, approachable and attentive to what I wanted for the finish look. She did not disappoint. I walked out with a warm, natural and elegant look for the weekend. I did not want to wash away the look I received so many compliments on during the evening. Last week I got a weave installed with closure. It was not properly done and I can already feel tracks loosen up. I have been weaving my hair on & off for several years and never had this happen. When the lady that did my hair finished she left a part of the front of my hair out. Mind you my hair is natural and the texture coils (hence it doesn't blend easily or as well with the hair). Also another thing to note is that the front of the closure was not cut properly. Parts of the mesh was very visible. I was horrified when I say the end result, she seemed quite ok with the finished product of her work. I politely said I don't feel comfortable with it and asked her to fix it by covering the front more. Mind you she was nice and tried to fix it, but I had to keep pointing things out. It was frustrating and I left not very happy with the finished product. I came to the salon as a suggestion from someone I know. I didn't expect this, I checked yelp & Instagram so I was optimistic about receiving quality service. The way the tracks were installed was weird. I didn't notice the closure doesn't properly cover the tracks in the back until I got home that day. I wasn't going to leave a review, but with loose tracks in less than a week on top of it all I had to. Also the closure has loosened up & it is exposing the braids in the front of my hair. I have to cover the front of my hair, it's embrassing. In all of my history of wearing a weave I have never had an install loosen up in less than a month if not it lasts longer. Nor had I had such a shoddy job done. read more
