It makes it a…read moreperfect spot for a farmer's market, notably with a shed roof and attractive landscaping (both plants and pathways) and well-organized parking (for the most part). But the function is more like boutique farmer's market. There's not much variety of actual farmers, although there seems to be a pristine example of each category of agricultural goods -- honey, cheese, meat. But don't expect to get your green grocery shopping done here, and the variety within even basics like berries or greens is more limited than Sprouts or even Smart & Final. The food trucks are a sparse but typically mediocre and expensive. And the market is already too crowded. The big treat is the yard-long tube of popped corn that distracts the youngsters while mom and dad peruse the beeswax soaps. My biggest gripe is that the City likes these little demonstration projects, and makes no attempt to get real quality farm-to-fork food, or to coordinate it with the other efforts at Laguna/Big Horn or District 56. Good ideas, all of them, but pick one that works.

Old Elk Grove really needed this boost. The setup on Sunday has your basics: kettle corn, a food truck or two, fresh veggies, local cheeses and honey and some arts and crafts. But the extras did it for me. The coffee vendor, the loose leaf tea vendor, the vegan mayo/spread vendor- all fantastic. The organic produce was also reasonably priced. Parking is not a problem. There's a small paved lot across the street from the market, or a large dirt lot directly behind. Bonus is that you're in Old Elk Grove, which means you are walking distance to a handful of good brunch and lunch spots too.

The pugliese bread is my favorite as it is soft, fluffy, and taste delicious! The sourdough is also yummy and has a light airy consistency.  The sandwiches are made with the fresh baked bread and are delicious! Even though the store opens at 6am, the bread is not ready until 8-9am, therefore it is best to order a sandwich a couple hours after the store opens for the optimum selection of bread. I once made the mistake of ordering a sandwich at 7am and was only presented with two bread options: sliced bread or focaccia. I selected the focaccia and although the bread was tasty, it made for a very soft and ultimately soggy sandwich.  There is a large prepared/hot food section that is self-serve. On one occasion while I was selecting a soup to purchase I witnessed an employee wiping up the spilled food from the counter and putting it back into the large food tray. It was absolutely nauseating and I immediately questioned if I should even purchase the soup given the lack of proper food cleanup/handling.  The grocery items cost much more than other grocery stores for the same exact item. Nugget seems to carry a variety of high-quality ingredients and typical well-known brands. The cost of produce and meat is much higher than other grocery stores, although the meat is typically sourced from local farms.  During Thanksgiving Nugget carries a large selection of high quality turkeys. There are a few turkeys that are sourced from local farms that are advertised as natural, antibiotic free, and free range. When purchasing a Turkey for Thanksgiving it is always advised to call and preorder as the high quality turkeys sell out fast.

There are many stands that serve produce, bread, flowers, honey, and much more. I love the flower booth that is comes to this farmers market every weekend. You can buy flowers by the bouquet (anywhere from $7-$30) or you can ask about bulk purchases. I also like that they have performers that play guitar, piano, sing, etc. This farmers market doesn't compare to the midtown farmers market, but a great farmers market if you're looking to simply buy produce and fresh items. There is plenty of parking. There are no food trucks or food stands with already made food. Also, no dogs allowed.

We ordered stuffed kulcha, dahi bhalla, chole chana puri, and mango lassi. There were a few people ahead of us, but we had our food ready in about 10 minutes, which was great because we were pretty hungry! Since there was a little seating area by the food truck, we decided to sit down and enjoy our food right there. Everything tasted fresh, the spices were just perfect for our liking, and the portions were just right. The stuffed kulcha was delicious, the dahi bhalla was a nice refreshing bite, and the chole chana puri was so satisfying. The mango lassi was a great way to wash it all down. After filling ourselves up, we couldn't resist stopping at another food truck for some freshly made jalebi. They make their jalebi using pure ghee, and you could tell it was a treat worth having! They also had khoya, so of course we ended up getting a pound to take home. Love finding these little food spots with fresh, tasty food and generous flavors. Definitely worth stopping by when you're craving some good Indian street food. And if you have a sweet tooth, don't skip the jalebi and khoya!

However, I went with her anyways and was pleasantly surprised by the delicious things I found that are now my regular treats as well as how friendly the staff and other customers are here that it's really not a big deal that we stick out a lot, haha.. Specifically, I found this snack called Khatta Meetha, a very popular "Indian snack mix (namkeen) known for its balance of sweet ("meetha") and tangy or sour ("khatta") flavors" according to Google. So it's like a snack mix made of chickpea flour noodles (sev), fried rice flakes (poha), green peas, and roasted peanuts. The seasoning is what makes it so good, yes, it's definitely the combo of sweet and tangy that makes it so tasty. Anyways, they've got a ton of fresh produce, ethnic ingredients and frozen foods as well as plenty of pantry foods like large bags of basmati rice, giant cans/jars of ghee, etc. I don't really cook so I won't know what to do with any of these food items, but everything looks fresh and reasonably priced. All in all, a great place to get South Asian authentic ethnic ingredients and prepared foods, and the bakery sure looks like a great place for anyone with a sweet tooth. They even have a food truck out front with seating if you're looking for a delicious Indian meal.

We rode the bus from the school and checked in at the designated field trip area when we arrived. Since there were four classes, they split us into groups, which made everything feel organized and smooth. The kids absolutely loved the hay ride and getting a tour of the farm to see the layout. One child was so excited she almost fell over. Her water bottle fell but she was safe. We then visited the animals and learned about all the amazing things the farm does, which was both fun and educational. After the tour, the kids enjoyed time on the playground and had snacks. There were also shops and places to eat, which was great for families and chaperones. The bathrooms are port-a-potties. They do have hand washing stations. I had never heard of this farm before, but it truly exceeded my expectations. We will definitely be back next year! It was only $5 per child and $15 for parents which wasn't bad.
