So Pleasantly Surprised! We were looking for a quiet nightcap away from the music, televisions and bustling crowds of holiday travelers and people just living it up in the local bars. We felt so lucky to find Z Bar. The ambience is simple, gorgeous, and calm and the service was top-notch. Special thanks to Dorota who was such a professional and yet funny and very real. Place has a good vibe and great views. Drinks are quite nice but come at a premium price which is expected. Service was terrible. Both bartenders were in a visibly bad mood; they were ignoring guests, cutting them off when they were asking questions, and rolling their eyes at any request. 3.5 stars! As far as service goes they definitely deserve five stars! The server was great. The reason I'm giving 3.5 stars is because the atmosphere/vibe/Feng shui..whatever you want to call it..was so weird! I expected glitzy and Glam decor ..or at least modern and expensive looking. But what I saw was mismatched aesthetic. Why is there a giant nylon type poster of a pug on the wall? And it's like the only painting in the whole place. Also I'm so happy we were sat in the most normal chairs in the place...we saw this one tall guy awkwardly sitting on a ottoman trying to look as classy as possible while sipping his $20 cocktail...he looked like an oversized toddler! Poor guy. Lol. Anyway the drinks are obviously a little over priced but I didn't mind, we were only getting one here anyway. And it was a very good cocktail! I've been here a few times for dinner and recently went in to try their new brunch menu. I went around noon on a Sunday during the marathon and it was empty! I was so surprised. We were able to comfortably sit and take our time, which feels like a rarity at most brunch spots. We got steak and eggs and the chicken and waffles and both were really good. I loved the bourbon syrup that came with the waffles! But, in our typical fashion, we couldn't keep our hands off of the brunch potatoes. Service was attentive and helpful. This was definitely not worth the price. At $150+ I expect to be wowed & my mouth to be hit with an amalgam of flavor however the dishes were average at best. No dish, neither the truffle benedict nor the truffle potatoes had ANY real truffle flavor nor aroma. The Benedict wasn't bad but in addition to the lobster & egg no flavor was apparent. I'm convinced the crab beignets aren't named properly because I detected no crab in them. There was an accompanying sauce that made them bare-able but where's the crab for Pete's sakes. I liked the options such as liquors for the mimosa accoutrement but I would've like for there to be more fruit options. What a place!!! For starter wee walked in with a party of 2 and wanted to sit outside on the patio. Manager said it was reserved for guest with reservations, no problem give us anything you have. He sat us at the lounge. We were facing the outside patio the whole time and not one person sat outside the whole night. The manager said they were reserved!! Smh. My absolute favorite rooftop in Chicago. Classy and a nice ambiance. Not too loud or crazy and more laid back. The drinks are a bit pricey but so worth it. The staff and bartenders are nice. It's a part of the Peninsula Hotel (one of the best hotels in the country), so it definitely did not disappoint. I love that they keep the patio open with the fire pits going even in the winter unlike many other rooftops. There's a beautiful view of North Michigan Ave, the Hancock Center, and River North. Came here for the first time with a friend after work during the summer and it was PACKED, so make sure to call ahead and put your name on, especially if it's nice out. The Dynasty and the Cherry Blossom are my favorite drinks - so fresh and so worth it. Definitely one of my favorite places in the city. read more

This was such a fun rooftoop at The Peninsula hotel! It over looked the Water Tower Place and Michigan Ave. We came here right after breakfast since our room was still getting serviced. I love rooftops and I visited this place recently. This place is a bit classy and not like a casual rooftop bar. Servers and hosts are in proper formal attires. Bar was having some amazing glasses and fancy attractive drinks that no one can resist. When we reached we had to wait for few minutes at the bar to get the table. So we thought we will just take a drink at the bar meanwhile. As I reached to the bar, I saw an amazing glass with a leaf on it and it looked so tempting that I ordered the same. The drink's name was "the z" and it was a green colored cucumber flavored drink. I loved it. Also, they were serving some nice chips and pretzels with the drinks which was amazing. As soon as we ordered our drinks we got the table and the first thing that caught my eye was every table had a throw if anyone want to use it. I really loved that idea as it was very thoughtful Chicago is always cold and even in summers you might feel a need to have a throw or a zipper. In the swanky Peninsula hotel...a little confusing to get to, but a few elevators and steps and boom, you are in the rabbit hole. Super cute space with a fantastic outside viewing of good old Chicago high rises. Our server was fantastic. I started off with a summer spritz which was refreshing, boozy and beautiful! Lots of bites that were really amazing. Hamachi ceviche-light and refreshing. TONS of seafood with some fresh herbs, etc Daikon frites-amazingly huge and crispy frites. I loved them. Crispy outside with a potato like inside...AMAZING! Satay-chicken and beef...the indian flair was a fantastic flavoring on this beautiful presentation Sliders-perfect amount of beef on a little bun. Steak fondue-my least favorite dish and the most expensive. It was just ok. The steak had a char on it and definitely required the dipping sauce. It was also cold by the time were were eating it...so I didnt love that either. Overall, I liked Z bar despite my inner city person telling me not to because its in a hotel. Alas, I caved yet again and succumbed to the pressure of a beautiful space with lots of fantastic drink options and a cool view of chicago skyscrapers. I loved this bar so much!! The drinks are a little pricey but you're definitely paying for the view, the city looks absolutely beautiful from their windows. The ambience is amazing and the staff was extremely polite. The burrata was very tasty and the tuna tartar was amazing, the sauce was very flavorful. Could use more chips with the tuna. I'm really disappointed with the service. I waited at the bar for 20 minutes, and every bartender looked down when they came my way. A white gentleman walked up, and I told him I hadn't gotten any service right here, and he said, "oh! Don't worry; I'll get service!" And 2 minutes later get got his drink requests and drinks delivered. I had to order through a sever. I didn't want to believe it, but it was confirmed how biased the service was. Once you get over the initial mandatory $500 deposit you have to plunk down with the reservation, you'll probably need all the liquor you can scarf down to numb the pain of the final check. I had to go to the chi-chi rich restroom to splash my face with ice cold designer spring water! But there was nothing good in there worth pilfering, so I came back out and ordered another drink I could not afford. So, basically, toots, we came. We saw. We spent. $$$$$$ Uh, sorry. No view on earth short of the Pyramids at Giza should cost you over $500. It was HOT! But I was determined to try this rooftop bar at our hotel. I'm glad I did. Once we sat down in the shade, we started to cool off a bit. The view of John Hancock is good, and The Allerton... but not much else. That's ok. It's still nice to be high up in Chicago. The wait staff is all very helpful and professional. We were just having a drink so I ordered the "Z Cocktail", their signature. It had a cool weird taste (bergamot?) that really makes it a delicious treat. They serve their drinks with yummy spiced nuts and olives with huge caperberries. I think trying this place out after dark would be the thing to do. Wow - Z Bar is amazing new rooftop bar in the Chicago scene. I have always loved going to The Bar at the Peninsula for drinks, but now I think I found my new favorite! The space is very chill and modern, and excellent music, staff and drinks to accompany the experience. We came here last night for a quick night cap before ending the weekend. We were seated a nice little corner on the rooftop, that is secluded from the rest of the terrace area. The seating was very comfy. There were a lot of interesting craft cocktails, but we all landed on the Sunday Spritz. This is a light and relaxing cocktail that is composed of magnolia aperitif wine, elderflower, chrysanthemum, strawberry and lemon. It's quite beautiful and tasty. It was a little challenging to drink as the glass was stacked high (above the rim) with ice cubes, and with no drinking straw. The staff are super friendly, and beautifully dressed and styled! Absolutely Loved this bar! The staff was friendly from the time we walked in to the time we left. Wonderful views of the city greeted us when we walked in. The bar was so full of natural light I immediately reminded myself to book a table in the fall, as I'm sure the views will only get better with time. There are a variety of tables to sit at, able to accompany anywhere between two and eight people, and the artwork of the GM's pug on the walls and plates are a nice friendly touch. We sat at the bar and enjoyed thoughtful, delicate, and delicious cocktails while sharing sliders and the charcuterie board. The drinks are Phenomenal and the menu highlighted special ingredients that definitely made the cocktails stand out and each was presented with style: We both ordered THE Z and agreed that it was a classic we will order again. The gin, cucumber, bergamot, lime, and mint is a burst of citrus sunshine in a glass. I am an avid fan of aperol and for me, the DYNASTY was a perfect blend of vodka, aperol, lime, ginger, and fresh raspberries. It was light and smooth. Almost too smooth ;) I love the song 'Blue Skies' so I had to try the drink CLEAR SKIES, and it was another gin gem. It came in a bottle, over ice, which surprised me a little, but the flavors were there- another bright drink perfect for summer. The BA-DAQ ATTACK was fun to order and fun to drink. I'm not a huge fan of rum, but this blend of rum, mango, and banana was fantastical luscious. A delight! I also appreciated the lime wedge on the side as an option to cut the sweetness. My favorite cocktail by far is the DISCO FEVER. I loved everything about this drink. The mix of vodka, mandarine orange, lemon, campagne, and (gasp) passion fruit was Extraordinary!! I *despise* passionfruit and adamantly stay away from cuisine and drink that incorporates it, but here.....exquisite. The presentation for this drink was also super fun- it arrived spinning like a large-and-in-charge Disco Ball. Fun!!! For food, we kept it simple this time, just ordering three items: I was in the mood for a burger, but not a whole one, so we ordered the MINI SLIDERS. They were cooked just how I like (mid-rare), and juicy! The onion ring (not noted on the menu) added a crisp crunch in texture that completed the slider. I'm a sucker for charcuterie boards, so THE BUTCHER BLOCK was a must try....it was lovely. My favorite food group is cheese, and all three were great. I can't remember the name of my favorite (the one in the middle) but I'm gonna call in the morning to find out what that creamy goodness is. By far- the 'jerky' and chorizo were my meats. I could live off that chorizo..... A last minute addition was the DAIKON FRITES and I'm so glad I tried them. Daikon radish as a 'fry' worked beautifully for me. I saw one thing and tasted another.....and fell in Love :) The spices are out of this world! The menu said there was a spiced tomato jam, but I just got ketchup, so I hope next time I'm in, I can try the jam. We will definitely be back to try more cocktails and cuisine. I went here twice last week when a relative was visiting from Cali (Monday) and a couple days after, I went back again (Friday) having drinks before a Lollapallooza after-show. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this rooftop bar. Not your typical rooftop scene where I fully enjoyed the view and ambiance of the bar. I particularly liked the cocktails. My favorite being the Strange magic and the Disco Fever which came in a unique glass. The service was nothing but perfect. My sister and I arrived in a Friday evening, no reservations and although we were 4rth on the 2 guest list, we managed to get seated within 15 minutes. Not bad considering that the cue was long. Music was good, service was excellent and the drinks were divine. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Chicago. read more

Sadly, my experience at this bar was not as positive as others have reported. I was told this was the perfect place for a drink with a view whilst shopping on Michigan Ave. They opened at 2:00 on Sunday and we arrived at 2:20 with no one at the desk. We waited a few minutes before I walked into the bar and asked about seating--I was told to wait for the hostess, which we did. When she arrived she asked for our room number at the hotel, when I told her we were not staying there she paused, sighed, and gave an eye-roll. She then picked up the menus and walked away, without saying another word, and set the menus on a small table near the door and wall--again not a word was spoken. We sat at the designated table and waited.... While waiting we realized we were unable to see the view, as there were only 4 tables taken we were going to ask if we could move to another table nearer the edge, but no one came over so we moved ourselves to the table. I will say, I am aware that restaurants and bars do everything in their power to maximize dining-room yield and moving can throw the whole system off. Therefore, had someone spoken to us we would have had a conversation before moving. After several moments the hostess came over and said we couldn't sit there because it was saved for the use of a larger group. I explained we couldn't see the view from the original table and asked if there was a reservation for the table. She said there was not, however, a larger group could arrive. As the primary purpose of our visit was the view we asked if there was any other table with a better view available and if not we would not be staying. The hostess did not respond to our question and simply told us that we were welcome to leave. Let me make myself clear---I believe the purpose of negative reviews is to assist the business in creating a better experience. Therefore, before leaving I told the hostess I will be leaving a review, giving her an opportunity to mediate the situation. Her response was, "Fine--have a good day. Good-bye" She repeated "goodbye" in a patronizing voice as we waited for the elevator. I'm perplexed by the idea of losing paying customers over the assumption of the arrival of others. To the management, I would recommend the idea of table sharing as they do in Europe. The seating for 4 had outdoor armchairs allowing strangers to still feel like they have personal space. Finally, I suggest the hostess go through customer service and communication training. Happy, delighted customers are your best advocates, and a hostess is the first and last impression of Z-bar. When she is rude, no matter how great the food and drinks are it will keep customers away. From start to finish, we weren't greeted, barely acknowledged, and treated with disdain. We were made to feel as if we were not wanted, so I won't be returning. Customer happiness isn't gained by the quality of the product, but by the quality of the service. read more

Came here on a Friday night and the place was packed, however, turnover around the bar was pretty quick. I'm guessing that most people only stay for 1-2 drinks because of the prices (avg ~$18-24/drink; New York prices for sure). The decor is modern and welcoming with a mix of neutrals and grays, metals, and textures- swanky and tasteful. There are two giant portraits of pugs in the bar space, which is my favorite, so this made me even more excited to be there. The cocktail menu is creative and extensive. We ordered the Z, Dynasty, True North, and New York Smash. The Z is the bar's signature cocktail, a fruity martini with bergamot, and it was perfect and almost like not drinking alcohol at all. The Dynasty was a vodka based cocktail with raspberries, it was a fantastic balance of sweet and sour. The True North sounded amazing but, for me personally, was really hard to drink, because somehow this vodka/wine-based martini tasted like whiskey. The best part about it was the edible maple leaf and maple pearls at the bottom of the drink. The New York smash was a rye drink, that we coaxed nearby bar-goers into getting for themselves, it was a crowd pleaser. Finally, one thing I must mention, is the complimentary bar snacks- cashews and olives. I think the cashews were pizza flavored and I am obsessed- I want more! The olives were flavorful and perfect in between drinks. The bartenders were friendly enough, attentive, and worked very quickly with no loss of quality.
