This place and the barber, Mike, won me over. OK, so I have gotten my hair cut for the past (ahem) 20 years at national chains (admittedly no the best decision), but Mike at this place was recommended to me so I decided to check him out. Actually I have always hated getting my hair cut. The whole process made me break out in a cold sweat. The quicker and cheaper, the better for me. (It'll grow out if it's awful, right?) Folks, this was the first time that I can recall actually enjoying getting my hair cut. Mike was friendly and set me at ease right away. He talked enough to keep me comfortable, but not so much as to be intrusive. And for the first time in recent memory, I came away (not only sweat-free, but) with a haircut that was classic and looks great on me. He clearly knew how my hair would grow and cut with knowledge and skill. (And my cut was three weeks ago... still looks great!) Thanks Mike. You have earned a loyal customer in me. read more

Well past due on this review... Go here and ask for Mike. Mike is the best barber in Boston hands down, thus making this barbershop, the best in town. Mike is the first barber I visited after moving to the city several years ago, and I haven't even thought about going anywhere else since. The guy has the utmost respect for his profession and for his clients; he treats you like family. Never in my life have I received more compliments on my hair since having Mike as my Barber... and my response is always the same "Go see Mike, tell him I sent you." Mike's never done studying and perfecting his craft; so don't expect to get the same vanilla hair cut every three weeks. People are going to notice some different styles, and my bet is that they're going to like it. Absolutely love this place. I grew up in the South End but never found a local barbershop that I loved. I recently started going here because my barber - Mike Coronella, master barber - starting cutting here - and I have found my new barbershop. The owner is so friendly, has great taste in music and, importantly (because I've just starting bringing my little boy in for cuts), always has a lollipop for the kids. If you are looking for a top barbershop in the South End, head over to Z barbershop. I will also put a plug in for Mike. I've been going to Mike for years. Mike jokes that before I started coming to him I had to take anti-anxiety meds before getting a haircut. No longer. Mike has not only kept me looking good but has given me sage advice which has guided me through my 20s and 30s. My husband and two sons (2 yrs and 1 yr) all had haircuts at Z Barbershop this weekend. Zack and his sister provided incredible service, this is a special place. Zack gave great cuts, he is skilled and moves quickly. He creates a welcoming neighborhood location that has a much different feel than the typical "chain" barbershop. Prices were reasonable and the cuts turned out great for everyone. Special kudos to Z Barbershop for creating an awesome spot for a kids haircut. It's really hard to find a good location to get my sons' haircut - Z has a sports car chair, a large TV, and lollipops; this, along with Zack's good nature with kids and quick hands created a great experience. I've been taking haircuts with Mike Coronella for years so when he came to Z barbershop, I went with him. He's great. Affable, old school flair. And most important, I can just come in and say "make me look good." And then I look good. With other barbers, I often have to specify exactly what I want, but honestly, I don't much about hair. So if it isn't that great its my fault. Not with Mike. I can just tell me to make me look good. Sure, if there's something specific you want, he's got the chops. I've seen him do all sorts of cuts when I was waiting, but for me... the big difference is somebody who actually believes you can look good, and makes you look good. Thanks Mike! read more

While in town from New Jersey, I needed a quick haircut before running the Boston Marathon. I didn't have high expectations; I just needed a quick cut. To my surprise, it turned out to be one of the best haircuts of my life, being on par with top barbershops I've visited in NYC, Budapest and and Munich. What impressed me the most was former Northeastern students stopping in with the sole purpose of visiting their favorite barber. As a graduate of Northeastern 13 years ago, this place definitively has my husky stamp of approval. And you guys even get a student discount for a top-notch cut. Ziad the owner is a total pro, and I'm so glad I found a good barbershop in the area. He's got a relatively new business, but he works super hard to keep his customers happy, and I always feel like he's gone the extra mile. He can handle slightly longer hair, but then uses a straight razor to clean up the sides and back perfectly, and always offers to style my hair before I leave. He offers such a consistent, high quality haircut, thats the best value in the Back Bay or South End. I bounced around between a few places before finding him, and now I'm a customer for good. Ziad runs a fine shop. Clean, kid-friendly, and a quality gentleman's haircut service. Come for the sharp edges and clean looks. Stay for the hot lather straight razor neck hair cleanup. Stay longer for the blow dryer / head massage that left me feeling downright zen-like. There's a big old light up car with a seat belt for kids to "ride" in. My boy hasn't warmed up to haircuts yet, but Ziad totally let him chill in while I was under the scissors. It meant a lot to me. Call ahead for a kids appointment. I have struggled to find a quality barber/salon in Boston partially due to the fact that i'm a guy with longer hair. Safe to say I found my barber for the rest of my time in boston. Everyone is extremely well qualified, as shown by the plaques on the wall. It was extremely apparent that they knew what they were doing and gave me the best cut i've had in a long time. Great with layers and have great taste, perfect for a routine cut or if you are going to switch up your style. The price is amazing, especially for Boston, I was willing to pay double what they charged me. Can't wait to go back. read more

I have been going here for years and I have had good experiences with other barbers. However, I got haircut from Mario and it was the worst haircut I have ever gotten. At the very beginning I made it clear what I wanted and told him not to go too short on the sides. He ended up going way too short on the sides and he also dug the clippers into my neck, which left me with a cut. At the top of my head he cut my hair so lopsided that i had to go to another barber to have them try and fix it. I would not recommend going to Mario for a haircut. read more

Since my hair is very thick and has multiple cowlicks, it's always been a struggle for me to walk out of a barbershop satisfied. In my 25 years of life on this planet I have never, consistently, have had great haircuts from a barber. Before I started coming here, haircuts were hit or miss and I would never know if I liked my haircut until after I had come home and showered. But at Z's I like my haircuts immediately after he is finished. He is really nice and also has flexible booking. I would recommend him to anyone, 10/10. I've got curly, somewhat unruly hair and it took me a very long time to find a barber who I trusted to do a good job every time. I've been going to Mike Coronella for over two years now and I have no plans of changing any time soon. Every time I leave the shop looking sharp. BEST Kids haircut in the south end!! Z is your guy! He is patient and makes the children feel comfortable. The boy I nanny for was scared the first time we went but Z showed him all the tools he was going to use. Now all he talks about is Z! We went back today and he was totally comfortable at the shop. MIKE IS THE MAN!! My friend got his hair trashed from a hair salon and walking in to this shop was the best decision we could've made. My friend and I were astonished at how great his hair looked after Mike was done with the cut. Later, Mike was explaining to us how he cuts and treats the layers of hair. Thrilled Z barbershop is in the neighborhood! My son has tons of fast-growing hair and hates to have it cut. We walked in on a Thursday and he ran right over to the car chair and couldn't wait to get in. While hesitant about the cut itself, he was distracted by the car, giant TV with his favorite shows and lollipops!
