I have been coming to this spot for several years. Oftentimes, it is a good value, it is a local spot where they still use the straightedge, it's always a lively spot. There are a few barbers who are consistently good.....and there are a few who unfortunately have been consistently unsatisfactory. I am a very forgiving guy and am still planning on patronizing this business, but will probably opt for a different barber in the future. The last two times I have been there, the gent cutting my hair has spent at least equal if not more time on his phone than he does cutting my hair...trying to make it look like he's doing something by blindly spraying or doing something to make it look like he's being attentive. I appreciate the sentiment, but my body language could not have been clearer that it was getting to be more than a little bit irritating that he's half-assing the job, especially when I emphasized how important this haircut is, as I have important appointments in the very near future and need to look presentable. When I walked in, I WANTED to wait for the gent with the buzzcut who always does an amazing job, and is very friendly....but I gave this guy a second chance....and for the second time, the "line-up" is very wavy, and for the second time, he nicked my neck in the process. LUCKILY I had a bit of extra neck whiskers to work with prior to going in, because I had to dip into that when I had to fix my own lineup. I am used to coming home from Supercuts and essentially giving myself a second haircut...I really didn't want to do it coming home from here, and hopefully, when I change barbers, I won't have to worry about that. Honestly, this cut is so subsatisfactory that I am toying with the idea of rescheduling some of the appointments until it grows in a bit. This place is cash-only and I made sure I had enough plus enough for a tip.... When he was done botching my coiffe, I gave him the exact amount, made it clear that I do not wish to have him cut my hair again, and on the way out, I'm 99.9% sure I heard the gent utter derogatory expletive. I have worked in the customer-service industry for over 25 years, and I know people have bad days, and some guests have high standards and all that jazz, but this isn't a one-off thing here. Jared is one of the barbers from VIP Barbershop on Harvard Ave in Allston, aka " The Dominicans." In there, you almost never hear English, and can't communicate with most of the guys with the clippers, yet always come out of there fresh to death. Well one of their top guys moved over to Primos and he's just a grade A, level 1 urban barber who can give you a mean temp fade with the#2-3 or scissor cut and line up a white boy's hair like me. So glad that a quality barber moved into this space. This is a great barber shop where you get a quality cut for only $15-16. I forget exact price as I usually just give him a $20 for cut and tip. There is a flat-screen TV to watch while you wait plus some magazines and comfy couches. Nothing fancy, but I don't really care about decor or amenities when I get my hair cut. What I care about is how my hair looks when I leave and what it cost me. The barber is very nice and listens to how you want your hair. I am terrible at explaining what I want and he's done a great job every single visit. I just got back from my third cut there and couldn't believe that they haven't gotten any reviews yet on yelp when I checked. He takes his time and uses a straight-edge razor to clean up sideburns and the rest of your hairline if needed. He is skilled with scissors too and doesn't just rely on electric clippers and can cut all different kinds of hair. I needed a haircut bad and I couldn't get in to see my regular barber so I noticed this place was right down the road and figured I would give them a try. I have the hardest time finding a barber who can cut my hair and have it turn out looking good. I've been going to the same barber for the past 3 years and am very satisfied every time so I was skeptical about trying somewhere new. Jared is a great barber. I showed him a picture and told him how I wanted it cut and he did exactly what I wanted in 30 minutes. He edged up first with clippers and then goes all the way around with the razor. Be weary, he might push your line back a little on the clipper edge up... But for the most part the edge was fine and very sharp. I'm very particular about my haircut and I walked out more than satisfied yesterday. read more
