Tried this place for the first time and got the best haircut l've ever gotten from Betty, she was super friendly and great at what she does. The reason this isn't a 5 star review is unfortunately because of the other stylist, Diane. Probably one of the most unpleasant and unfriendly customer service experiences I've ever had. Diane snapped when I asked if they did walk ins (like it said online) and she started patronizing me about how to work a phone and kept going on and on. She told me she didn't have time to cut my hair and proceeded to sit for quite a while on her phone and giving me dirty looks. Words can't describe the overall experience at the Gentleman's Salon. Diane was SO friendly, immediately offered me jelly beans and then got me in her chair and before I knew it she was washing my hair so delicately. Setting up appointments can be hard, but Diane always finds a way to squeeze you in. Betty is also a treat to deal with if she answers the phone. I've been having trouble finding a place to get my hair cut in the Boston area. I am pretty picky with who cuts my hair and have only had 2 stylists I have felt comfortable with in the 4 states I have lived in. I stopped in the Gentlemen's Salon recently and got a solid cut from Diane. She took a good amount of time to do the cut and asked me to show her how I style it so that she could get things right. She also washed my hair beforehand which definitely makes for a cleaner cut versus the barbers who cut dry or with the aid of a spray bottle. She also said they offer free cleanups in between regular cuts. They charge $30, which is reasonable considering the attention to detail and wash. I enjoyed the feel of the space: tucked away from the crazy parts of the North End, classical music playing, and definitely good personality from both the ladies who work there. They have a nice waiting area with a comfortable leather couch and good reading material. I will be back again. If they keep it up I might bump up my rating! read more

Don't waste your time. Called 4/5 times with no answer, finally got an appointment. Arrived early and the woman was very rude telling me my time wasn't for another 20 mins. Sat and waited for my appointment, sat down in the chair and told her how I get my haircut which is a 1 faded to scissor cut on top. She says I don't have the tools to do that kind of cut. Oh you're a mens salon but you don't have clippers? She pretty much just didn't want to cut my hair after I waited 45 mins for her and wasted part of my day. Very unprofessional salon. read more

My hair was a mess- until I walked into the Gentlemen's Salon. I am not from Boston, and was in the city on a trip, however a haircut was needed. While I was hesitant at first, after all, my hair stylist was no Ashley from Salon L, I was very pleased with the results. I walked into a nicely decorated room. The brick walls housed beautiful pictures with simple yet bold frames. A nice candy selection, as well as a very comfortable couch, further bolstered my love for this shop. I came with no appointment, and the two person duo of Betty and Diane seem flustered at first- however they quickly fit me into their already crammed schedule. Betty was great! We shared many laughs together, and she had delicate hands that smoothly weaved through my hair, cutting all the right spots. I explained what I wanted, and Betty delivered indeed. Thank you Betty- because of this wonderful shop, I was able to support a small business that is providing men was wonderful hair cuts, and even a nice home like atmosphere. P.S. Let me start off by saying I got my first haircut from Betty when I was 6 months old, 22 years later I still go here to get my haircut, even though I live in Los Angeles. I fly in to visit family and friends, and that always includes a haircut from Betty. As other reviewers have said what makes the Gentlemen's Salon the best is the genuine attention to detail. They wash your hair before the cut, use scissors for the cut, and even make sure to vacuum you off afterwards so there aren't any of those annoying little hairs. Betty knows what will look good for you, and really makes you feel great with your hair cut. Chatting with Betty is always great too, she is charismatic and knows so much about the city (probably because she has been here for so long, and also because her client list could be a who's-who list of people in Boston). The magazines on the coffee table are all for guys. No Cosmo here. The haircut - the best. Previously I had been going to hi- dollar joints like Judy Jetson near Porter Sq. Too much dough! One of the benefits of being a guy is a cheap haircut. I said cheap - not bad. You get in and out of Betty's chair at Gentlemen's for $30 - I leave a $5 tip. It is a nice neighborhood and you can get a good coffee at Cafe Vittoria after. Be brief when you call on the phone to make your appointment as there isn't a receptionist and chances are Betty or Diane have someone in their chair when you call getting their hair cut.
