We are big fans of global flavor, and Indian food is at the top of the list. After living outside of Tallahassee for a few years, we are glad to be back, and even more excited to find that Zaan Indian Cuisine had opened during our absence. The last time I was in the building, it was Café Cabernet. Yes, I am showing my age, but that was the last time I was in the building. I was curious to see how it would be reimagined as an Indian restaurant. Imagine my surprise when it felt like a brand new experience walking through the door. Beginning with the darkly tinted windows which create a warm moody ambience, despite the sun shining brightly outside, then walking into a beautifully appointed bar with stunning Emerald green barstools. Over the bar hangs a custom chandelier that sounds like wind chimes. We had already looked at the menu before we came in, but we took an extra moment and decided to order a cocktail and an appetizer before our meal. The Paneer Pakora arrived beautifully presented. The portion was absolutely enormous, and the two of us had half of our dinner orders leftover to take home. I imagine it will reheat beautifully in our air fryer. We ordered the chicken vindaloo and chicken tikka masala. Zaan utilizes a mild medium hot scale. Some restaurants will use a one through five I ordered medium and it was a proper level three if that is what you are used to. The staff to customer ratio was balanced in the customer's favor. The service was impeccable, the staff was available within eyesight the entire time, yet they did not hover over our table. We also ordered garlic naan, and I truly believe that what we left with in our to go containers was another entire meal. The portions are very generous . We are early diners, but I can tell you that this is also a perfect place if you want to stop in for a cocktail at a sexy bar, and order some appetizers. The fellow diners that were there during our early bird visit were mostly younger families, but I would definitely head back for drinks and appetizers later in the evening as the decor really lends itself to being a bar as well. It was a little hot to be on the patio, but I imagine that during mild weather that is the place to be! One thing that motivated us to visit, is the owner being so active on the local foodies page. Anytime someone asks for recommendations for a special occasion, brunch, birthday dinner, the owner is immediately in the chat recommending his business. They were very responsive to my request for a reservation via social media. There is a large attached parking lot so parking is not an issue. I can tell you that the outside is very deceptive. Unless you knew the previous business in that location, it might be easy to just pass right by. Please don't. You definitely need to visit if you are looking for global cuisine with a fantastic environment. They appear to have a VIP table for special occasions as well as a private dining room. I saw to go orders running continuously through our entire visit. We will be back soon and may even take the spice level up a notch. read more

I don't remember the last time I wanted to lick the plates at a restaurant, but it almost happened here. My husband and I ate at Zaan for the first time tonight. The restaurant is clean, comfortable, beautiful dishes, and unique glassware. I don't usually notice that, but the decor stands out. We started with the Manchurian Paneer, which was excellent. We saved the sauce to finish with naan. The Maharaja lamb and nawabi palak were delicious. We had the Peshawari naan for dessert, which was a perfect light and sweet way the end the meal. The flavors are complex and delicious, the service is great, and we will definitely be back. read more

Met a few friends for dinner. I had heard about this place but hadn't gotten around to visit until now. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately. Our server was amazing and very attentive. We started our dining experience several appetizers: Samosas, onion pakora, chicken momos, jalapeno cheese pockets a basket of several types of naan. The owner had our car illegally towed, along with several other cars, from a half empty parking lot when we were at a fundraiser at an adjacent business. The parking lot isn't marked in accordance with Florida law. The parking lot is supposed to be marked at the entrance and exit, along with other requirements that he has not met. Only four individual spaces are marked as tow-away spaces, and these were left vacant. This indicates a predatory mindset and an unkind demeanor. I was extremely excited to try out this restaurant until I was not. You see, Zaan Indian Cuisine isn't just in Tallahassee. If you happen to cross the Florida-Georgia state line, you will also find a location in Thomasville. I had heard many good things about the Thomasville location. I had wanted to visit it for the longest time, and then, voilà! The fates made life more convenient for me and they opened up another location some minutes away from my house. Well, we went a couple of nights ago. Parking is free and quite ample. The exterior though is kind of off-putting. It is dark at night and minus an open sign in the very corner that is easy to miss, you would think the restaurant is not open yet. Upon entering, the lights are dim as you reach the host, and it is only past the host that the lights actually shine. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful. They have a bar in the center displaying a plethora of drinks and the ceiling has these beautiful green crystals. Nearby you have a wall full of wine bottles. As for the tables, it will depend on how many are in your party. We were two and I regret to inform you that the circular table we were given was too small for the amount of food we ordered. Definitely get a big table if you intend to order lots of food, which you should do anyway to see what exactly appeals to you. The food menu is vast, the drinks menu possibly equally or more so. For our dinner, we began with drinks: a Taj Mahal beer and a mango lassi. The beer was cold, the mango lassi was stunning in its presentation, but upon sipping it, the consistency was off. It felt chunky, as if a few more rounds in the blender wouldn't have hurt. As far as food goes, they gave us some complimentary papadam and it wasn't half bad. We then ordered appetizers: samosas and gobi Manchurian specifically. The samosas were stuffed to the brim and had good flavor that was only augmented by its accompanying sauces of mint chutney and tamarind. The gobi Manchurian, however, was not my cup of tea. I am usually a huge fan of this dish, but in this case, I reluctantly took it home to see if someone else would enjoy it. An Indian friend of ours tried it and agreed with me that it was not the best. The gobi was overcooked, burnt even, and then they doused it in a sweet sauce that just did not pair well. For our main dishes then, we ordered the exact same two dishes: garlic naan and chicken tikka masala. We differ on our opinion about the garlic naan. My partner found it the best in ages that he had had, especially the parts that they baked more. Meanwhile I felt as if I were eating a whole head of garlic. The flavor, the way it was baked, was perfectly on point, but the garlic ratio is the kind of thing that Dracula would run away screaming from me. I like garlic, you know, but I have my limits. The chicken tikka masala, which was ordered medium, was not spicy at all. We should've ordered more spice. The portions, too, were smaller than what we are used to at other neighboring Indian restaurants. I personally found the chicken tikka masala edible. The chicken was cooked through, but the sauce was sweet. This is not the chicken tikka masala I am accustomed to. That and going back to the portions, I felt like I was skimped out on chicken. I understand that this is a nicer-looking Indian restaurant than others in town, but this doesn't mean that the food quality should suffer. Ultimately, the food left much left to be desired. I am not sure if it's because they recently opened and are still working out kinks or if my palette is just too used to another Indian restaurant that shall remain nameless. Nevertheless, I am happy to return and try other dishes, especially as there is a huge variety and the staff is very pleasant. read more

Always a pleasure at Zaan. The staff are extremely friendly and I was immediately seated and served for lunch. I ordered a few of their new menu items and both were very tasty. The Bang Bang Aloo was very similar in flavor to their Chili/65 sauce. The Arancini came with 3 balls, and the "Biryani Sauce" is like a mild Tikka sauce. They were delicious. First but not last visit here at this newly opened Zaan Indian Cusine restaurant. The service was really good and accommodating. The Ambiance is low light with a blacked out roof and light bulbs that are a soft candle light color. I ordered the Chicken Tandoor Indian Hot and Medium Hot Chicken Bombay Briyani. I shared a Naan bread basket and sample The 65 medium hot also. It was a good experience and they just opened. It is nice to have more American Indian food here in town. read more

This place really caters to the customers' requests! My friend has celiac and also cannot handle spicy heat. One of her complaints with some other Indian places in town is that even mild is too hot for her. The server was very knowledgeable in telling her that a dish (even mild) might be too spicy. She got the Mango Curry with chicken, and the mild was her level of mild. She loved it! I got the Paneer Khurchan and asked for medium heat. It was a great paneer dish at a perfect medium heat level. As it's the week of Halloween/Fall, they had a special cocktail drink menu. I got a Chai Martini and later a Fall Fashion, a maple forward take on an Old Fashioned. Both were great! I highly recommended the Chai Martini!! I will be back and highly recommend! Great food and accommodating, knowledgeable staff. read more

I will definitely become a regular! The service was good and timely! We were greeted right away once we walked in. The ambiance is a little upscale vibe but a bit dark so it makes you feel like you're out of little ole Tallahassee. The food is *chef's kiss* sooo flavorful. They also have several Asian selections like spring rolls and noodles on their menu, a pleasant surprise. Please note that the levels of spicy starts seriously high. I'd compare Hot (3rd level) to eating a fresh seeded Jalapeño!! It's enjoyable but also makes you sip water with every other bite. Next time, I'll definitely lower my spice level. On another note, the portion is unbelievable!!! You will definitely have enough to share and take it to go!! The only recommendation for improvement is the functionality of the restroom and possibly making it accommodating to individuals who's wheelchair bound. read more

This was a good restaurant for our group lunch. The restaurant was very accommodating for our large party. Everyone loved the mango lassi; definitely give it a try. Everyone within our party really enjoyed all of the dishes. One of the other dishes not pictured was the lamb chops cooked to perfection. My favorite Indian restaurant. I had the lunch special chicken curry. Everything was delicious. Large servings with naan included. We go about once a month all year long. We go on Thursdays for a late lunch and the hours have changed to 1:30 lunch ends. So we need to go earlier than our usual 1:15. read more

A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering From the outside, this place looks like a total dive--but step inside, and it's a completely transformed, beautifully renovated space. We ordered tikka masala, chicken tandoori, naan, spring rolls, and mango mousse. Everything but the spring rolls was phenomenal. The flavors were bold yet balanced--nothing overly salty, spicy, or sweet. Even with my sensitive stomach, I felt great afterward. Service was lackluster, but honestly? First review of the new year and it's a good one! We visited Zaan and were impressed as soon as we walked in the door. It has a modern and sparkling ambiance. We ordered the appetizer plate which was a great sampling of different foods, we just wish it listed what it came with as we weren't sure what each appetizer was. I ordered a mango lassi which was served in a gorgeous glass and tasted amazing. I would go back to the restaurant for this drink alone! We ordered the chicken tikka masala, naan, and the chicken Buddha bowl. The chicken tikka was delicious and served beautifully. The chicken, rice, and naan were cooked perfectly. We probably wouldn't order the Buddha bowl again but only because the chicken tikka was so good, we wished we had more. The service was a little slow. It took a while to get boxes and the check. Taking off one star because of this and because the exterior of the restaurant was a little rough - it blends in with the other stores and didn't match with the interior ambiance. read more

The pricing, ambience and service does is not worth the price. The servings were small. I had the buddha bowl with the archaka (chicken) I got 2-3 hard chicken breast in it masked with all the spices to make it authentic. Indian food is distinct in taste- this place is the same Indian tasting food there is in town. Beware as well the default to the tip is 22%. Talk about scam in person. As this is a new place and was packed may try again. I wish the Indian resturaunts in Tally would give more generous servings. We visited Zaan Indian Cuisine last night and the food was great! I've seen several other reviews about it and I feel like a lot of folks I know haven't had indian food ever- so I wanted to share a little for those thay may not have tried it yet. If you're new to Indian food- don't be scared to give it a try. The menu may feel a bit intimidating if you're not familiar- but there are a few dishes that I'd consider pretty safe to start with. We took a first-timer last night and he enjoyed everything we got. For app we had The 65, shrimp. Next time I would order it with chicken because the star of the show is really the sauce (slightly sweet red spicy chili sauce) and I think it overpowered the shrimp but would compliment chicken better. For mains we had Tikka Chicken (similar to chicken on a skewer-but really flavorful); Tikka Masala; The Vindaloo(medium was hot); and Butter Chicken. Those three dishes are kinda similar, well spiced, saucy with meat(you choose the protein) served with rice. We like to order family style (4 adults last night) and everyone shares so you can eat more of what you really love and this was enough to enjoy and take a little home for lunch today. We didn't order the biryani, but I know ppl like it a lot and is a pretty safe rice dish. Everything was really good- we got "hot" on some dishes and "medium" on the vindaloo which was spicy already. The vindaloo was pretty hot, so I'm glad the server recommended medium for that dish. On a scale of 1-10 hot factor, I'd call that a 7/8; and the "hot" on butter chicken was probably a 6.5 for me. The Naan (bread like a pita- but way better) was delicious too. We love authentic indian/persian food and Zaan was the closest we've expereinced to our favorite- Dishoom in London. We met for an early dinner at 6pm, and the restaurant was a little quiet, but I think there's a lot of opportunity as it gains popularity to become a lively and fun atmosphere (maybe it is more lively already is later in the night?). I could also seeing it be a great happy hour place as the bar is gorgeous. The restaurant decor is beautiful as mentioned by others, and they have a super cool outdoor seating area with a waterfall, outdoor bar, and a lot of string lights for ambiance that I can't wait to visit in the fall. I've read some other negative reviews of this restaurant, and I know that anyone and anyplace can have a bad night, but not tonight; tonight the place served us an exquisitely delicious lamb in a spinach sauce, along with chicken and mixed vegetables (Buddha bowl). I asked for mine (the lamb/spinach dish) to be medium spice, which turned out to be a little underspiced for my tastes, but I love spicy food, so I may not be a good measure for the average American tolerance level, but that was my only complaint. Everything was tasty, well-prepared, the experience was perfect; I think almost everyone's will be. If you like Indian food, I very highly recommend this restaurant. read more

The food was too oil and not good for consumption, otherwise the ambience was awesome.

The service was absolutely terrible. My sister is allergic to nuts. We let the server know and were told they would make accommodations. We started eating the food and she said her throat was itching and she felt like she was going to throw up and stopped eating after 2/3 bites. We asked for the entree to be taken off the tab and we received a flat no. The manager came to our table being very rude and off putting. We told him the situation and he decided to blame my sister for her allergic reaction. We were trying to be very polite and assertive expressing our issue. We asked what the dishes were cleaned with and did not receive a concrete answer. It wasn't until about 3 rounds of back and forth did he mention that they have special allergy dishes. I inquired why that wasn't the first thing mentioned and was met with more turmoil. We even asked to receive a discount for the entree and still received a no. There was no compromise made whatsoever on the fact that my sister could not eat it at all. He also said, "You can pay for it and throw it away at home," which I thought was extremely insensitive when I am a paying customer. I paid the bill to alleviate any further issues being that we are young black women. After paying and asking for boxes for the food, the manager stood watch of our table and began to rush us out of the establishment very rudely. He also came up to us at the table and asked "if we needed an ambulance". Once we walked out, he began to yell three inaudible remarks to us as we walked to the door. We also were talking outside for a few minutes and the manager came outside and threatened to call the police on us. If you live in the Tallahassee and enjoy quality indian food like I do, I beg you please do not spend your hard earned money at this establishment. I am very disheartened and angry that I even have to write anything like this because I was very excited to try a new place before I move but this is absolutely not a place I would recommend to anyone. Decided to make the trip from Valdosta since we used to go to the Thomasville location a bunch. Unfortunately, It is not the same other than name. The chicken tikka used to come on a sizzling platter and was juicy and tender but now it doesn't. It's was dry and the portions are smaller (and more expensive). The naan did not look like they were cooked in a tandoor. No bubbles or char marks. The tikka also did not look like it was cooked in there and definitely not the same as the old location. It doesn't seem like they have a have the same cook team or they don't have the same equipment as they had in Thomasville. The menu also is not the same. I used to love the fish appetizer but now they don't have any fish just shrimp. It does seem like they sold the business name to get the old clientele in the door but it's definitely not the same. Maybe it's early growing pains to the new location but I'll definitely wait a while before going back. Giving it a 3 star because it wasn't like the food was inedible or downright bad.
